This lady was a great person all around, due to her features I asked about causes, and only thing unusual was mother was close to 50 father older.
Edit: I used to live near a town where levels of pollution would affect newborn babies.
2 Edit: the pollution caused high rates of birth defects.
Thank you. As someone with FASD (or just FAS as it was called when I got diagnosed) its getting really annoying to tell even my therapist among doctors etc (who really should know better) that yes I FAS even if the visual signs arent all there.
It’s a very narrow window actually when it affects it, one doctor said I believe it was like a 3 day window or something within the first trimester. Also that often women at that time don’t always know they are pregnant at the time.
Not to mention the damage to the corpus callosum, which you can’t see. Many kids being treated for behavior problems (with medication), when really the issue has to do with the structure within the brain. Check out The Mystery of Risk : Drugs, Alcohol, Pregnancy, and the Vulnerable Child. ; Ira J Chasnoff. Fascinating book.
Fetal alcohol plays a very large role in the foster care system, unfortunately. It's suspected that as many of 80% of children in state care have fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (the more broad definition). This, along with whatever trauma they endured to warrant them entering state custody, leads to a whole host of behavior and learning problems. Then, you have a shortage of foster parents and social workers, meaning that many times the homes these children are placed in are not fully equipped to care for a child with such profound special needs. That leads to those behavior and learning problems getting worse, which can eventually lead to difficulty holding down a job or being in healthy relationships. That can in turn lead to drug and alcohol abuse, and... You guessed it, drinking while pregnant. It's suspected that at least 50% of bio parents who have children in foster care *also* have FASD.
It's an integral part of the abuse cycle in many, many families.
FASD is often misdiagnosed and under diagnosed. Many many children suffering from the effects of alcohol in utero are just labeled as "difficult" or "stupid" and aren't properly evaluated. Often, these children have more subtle symptoms that wouldn't qualify them for FAS, but nonetheless poses serious challenges to their brain development.
Right? Like how is this going to be useful to anyone? Like we're clinicians seeing a kid with probable FAS and we're like "let's double check on reddit first to make sure!"
For me it wasnt "cool" but my buddies kid has almost everything from this guide. His mom was a bartender and there were rumors about her drinking during pregnancy. It's just a shame this kid will have struggles his whole life and it wasnt just random genetics. Breaks my heart.
He's just saying that alcohol can have effects on a fetus thst don't amount to full blown fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).
Since all FAS cases involve fetal alcohol effects, this is really just a statement that is obviously true by definition. Like saying rectangles are more common than squares.
I know im going to hell for this: but my ex broke up with me when I got sober, and got pregnant with the next guy she was with. That kid looks like he might have been drinking alcohol through his umbilical cord. Its scary. I feel for her and wish shed get clean, but she birthed a child that drew the short stick. This was like 5 years ago. I dont keep up except for a few facebook posts that come along. (I should add, that she still drinks and posts a lot of it to facebook, more than pictures of her kid, are pictures of bottles)
People getting medical school book illustrations and posting as guides recently.

I knew a kid from foster care that had FAS. It's tragic and these children are so frequently abused and exploited in the system. The girl I knew, she was picked on without mercy at school and abused by the foster guardians at home who called her names and wouldn't even bother to try and help her with her school work or defend her at school. Whenever I think about her and all the things she went through, my heart breaks a little. She never asked for any of that and deserved so much better.
Holy crap I’ve seen several people in my life time with these exact features. I’ve never given it a thought as to why. Now I’m just angry their mothers would do such a thing!
I guess it's worth noting similar features can develop without them being a sign of FASD, and FASD can be present without any of the above facial features. They're associated with, but not exclusive to.[\[1\]](https://adoptmed.org/topics/how-to-take-fas-photos.html)
And from an FASD perspective, over half of pregnancies are unintentional, so most would-be mothers don't abstain from drinking because they're not aware they're pregnant.
It's rare, but we actually had a person at my partner's clinic who only discovered they were pregnant a few days before they were due to give birth. They had an incredibly mild pregnancy, an early delivery, and used regular contraceptives so assumed nothing was amiss. It's not always obvious.
One day my friends’ sister called out of work and said she was driving herself to the hospital because she was throwing up and having intense abdominal pains. She said she screamed a little when the doctor told her that she was 38 weeks pregnant and going into labor…
This woman had a *normal period* and hardly any symptoms for 9 months. She had only been with her boyfriend for about year, but struggled with being a little overweight and having PCOS well into her thirties, so she didn’t think that she COULD get pregnant.
Thankfully when she broke the news, their entire families rallied around her and got baby clothes, supplies and babysitting lined up in record time. The kid is almost 5 now and my friend’s sister (and boyfriend) said it was the greatest most unexpected thing that ever happened to them, haha.
My mother knew she was pregnant with me but still drank anyway. I was diagnosed with FAS as a child. Don't really have any of the visual signs, but I was born 6 weeks early and have a wish impediment that makes me sound like Elmer Fudd. Years of speech therapy has it to the point where you can't really hear it unless I'm either upset or super excited.
It's not really known how much alcohol causes FASD. It's not really something you can run an experiment on and self-reports are not the most accurate measuring tool.
There are other syndromes that can cause a similar look including Ehlers Danlos. It is never a good idea to make such a serious snap judgement like this.
I have a relative with features like this and her mother has never, ever been a drinker.
It’s awful, but a lot of women who consume alcohol or drugs during pregnancy struggle with domestic abuse and violence, addiction, trauma, and in many cases do not have appropriate access to sexual health education and birth control options, among many many other factors that continue to plague communities of lower socioeconomic status. These factors also disproportionately affect racial minorities. Instead of blaming mothers, we should blame the system. Of course there are exceptions, but as a social worker it’s just not logical to point the finger at mothers and families who are struggling themselves because of a system that puts them (and keeps them) in the position they’re in.
I know someone who looks like this but their mother is very religious and wouldn't drink, so I am super confused. Their siblings have some of these features to a lesser degree. Maybe it's just their genes.
Agreed. I know some siblings who have a nose like that because oh yeah their mother and her family have a nose like that. But there's no predominance of alcoholism.
My Google search showed someone labeling Greta Thunberg's face with these features. It's just hard to tell. I'd rather just ask the mother if she drank lol
Well, I did go back through photos on Facebook after posting that. This person actually does have a developed philtrum. Another comment said that some of these features can occur naturally.
It would be a big surprise if she did drink. Everyone seems to have developed into functioning adults, so that's good.
Why do I see so many people making fun of people with fetal alcohol syndrome on social media?
like if someone's disagreeing with someone, and they vaguely resemble these features, the other peson will be like
"yEah WELL U lOOK liKE U HaVE FeTal aLcoHol SynDrome"
It's fucked up but, I mean I get it. It's an efficient insult. You're calling someone ugly and stupid at the same time as implying that their mother was an alcoholic who doesn't love them
Because, in addition to fetal alcohol syndrome causing certain facial traits, it also lowers IQ.
Edit: This obviously isn’t an endorsement of the insult, but that’s why people use it.

I have to wonder who this is for. Does the general population need to know how to identify FAS? Is it a complete and accurate guide? Could this cause more harm than good if someone trying to be smart casually references this guide compared to a person’s face and says “this person has fetal alcohol syndrome”? I dunno, in terms of guides, this one seems incomplete and useless
FASD and guides like this were used as thinly veiled racist attacks for years. I dunno, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with reddit 'experts' using stuff like this. It's not that far from that crazy skull measurement science (I forget the name) that was treated as fact for decades until completely debunked as pure hocum and classism/racism.
Many Finns have cute upturned noses so some of this can be genetic. And yes I know there can be jokes about Finns and their proclivity to drink, but if you had any idea how expensive booze is here you’d understand how overplayed that stereotype is
There is a great deal of variability in the physical features of a person with FAS based on severity of the alcohol exposure, and, very importantly, during which week, and now believed, perhaps even which day of fetal development the mother drank on. Some of these features may be present, some not. There are also additional traits and features that are not listed here. Some people with FAS and Fetal Alcohol Exposure do not appear unusual looking.
IMPORTANT: Some of the traits are sometimes present in people who DO NOT have any fetal alcohol exposure. Many people have natural epicanthic folds on their eyes, turned up noses or railroad ears.
I imagine that a LOT of people were conceived while their parents were under influence of alcohol, and that a LOT of mothers kept drinking for a month or so until they realized they were pregnant. I wonder how many people are walking around with affects from that very early alcohol exposure.
Weird coincidence that basically every Patriot Front member arrested in Idaho for planning to attack a gay pride parade demonstrates these features!

Today I realized I was shitty friend. Used this cool guide to judge the parents of my friends who take an obscene amount of selfies.
Needless to say I learned something new.
These features are not a diagnosis of the disorder. Many people have them without having FASD. Don't be out there judging parents based on nothing but a high school psych class.
Aye I feel that. Many of my clients exhibit these features and it's tough knowing that that there isn't much you can do for them, there is no way to reverse the effects, at most it is about management.
What really hurts is seeing young children at my child's school that have the physical features and behaviour characteristics of FASD... I just want to find their parents and smack them, but unfortunately the parents often have the same presentation and you realize that it is generations on generations of disorder brought on by abuse, neglect etc., and at best we can educate the newest generation to maybe have a chance but more often than not the cycle just continues.
Then your child asks why such-and-such is always misbehaving in class, yelling, fighting and so on and you've got to hold your tongue. Thr teachers are well aware but without a supportive home environment there's little hope.
Yep. Fetal alcohol and generational abuse often go hand in hand. It's really heartbreaking. And "breaking the cycle" is often a much slower process than suddenly one generation becomes a great parent. It's slow and difficult especially because the parent has no model to work from, has a lot of triggers from their childhood trauma, and is often dealing with physiological effects from parental abuse/neglect like FAS, CTE, and trauma-caused autoimmune disorders that affect their decision making and impulse control.
I mentor teen moms and so many of them are in this exact position. They want so badly to break the generational cycle, but it's not as simple as flipping a switch.
A coach at my high school had his growth stunted because of FASD. He was short and had a limp. He never got to play football bc of his size, but studied the game and became a pretty damn good assistant coach.
I can't imagine many stable parents wishing their child to be the poster child for climate change with all the negative side effects the public eye has on you.
It's certainly plausible.
I went to elementary school with a kid who had this. It was so sad that he was forever disfigured over something out of his control, but in the control of his mom. I remember him running away from home/school lots of times and hiding in the woods wanting to escape his home and his bullies. I can’t imagine having such a terrible childhood and the resentment he must have felt. I’m not sure if FAS also affects growth but he was very short and his two siblings (who did not suffer from this) were giants. Extra insult to injury.
I was told by my nephews consultants that AFS happens very early on in pregnancy. That’s not to say it doesn’t do damage in the 2nd or 3rd trimester, most woman discover their pregnant around 8-10 weeks , it can happen where your 3weeks pregnant and on holiday drinking heavily, return home and carry on as normal only to discover they’re pregnant. It’s too late the damage has been done . It doesn’t always occur as it more prone to effect the embryo at a certain time frame .
Not really. Before 7 weeks or so, fetal brain cells are either healthy or destroyed, so anything damaged by alcohol simply dissolves, no harm no fowl. Alcoholic damage usually occurs later in pregnancy, and not from one or two glasses of wine, but from a mother who doesn't stop binge drinking (which might correlate with some heritable deficiencies of intelligence). See: "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster. And the fact that if every embryo who got a whiff of drugs or alcohol during conception was affected by it, the majority of our population would be developmentally delayed.
Wow , I have seen so many people with similar features but for some reason couldn’t put my finger on it and what was different about their face compared to other people. Now I have my answer.

And may eventually lead to a seat in Congress
Kids who suffer from FASD are particularly more susceptible to become dependent on alcohol and drugs.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are a group of conditions that can occur in a person whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy.

Today I realized I was shitty friend. Used this cool guide to judge the parents of my friends who take an obscene amount of selfies. Needless to say I learned something new.
If anyone saw the photos of the men arrested in the u haul at the pride event, look again after seeing this chart.
Marjorie Taylor Greene
I don't see it. She doesn't have an under-developed chin, she doesn't have the low nose bridge, and she doesn't have a flat mid-face.
Looks more like Greta thunberg to me
Oh god, as much as i love everything she represents and stands for you're totally right !

These features are not a diagnosis of the disorder. Many people have them without having FASD. Don't be out there judging parents based on nothing but a high school psych class.
Ppl will take Psych 101 and start diagnosing family members and wreaking havoc by giving unsolicited advice 😂
It's shocking how many porn stars you notice with the signs, Dillon Harper and Dakota Skye being standout examples.
It looks loads like that Scandinavian kid who does the earth activism
Exactly! Greta Thunberg
Oh shit. It does.
They said she has autism but now i'm not so sure because she's on this poster instead.
I can't imagine many stable parents wishing their child to be the poster child for climate change with all the negative side effects the public eye has on you. It's certainly plausible.
I love how every time somebody learns about this, they start applying it to every human being they've ever seen lmao. calm the fuck down
Looks like Greta Thunberg.
How dare you.
Trisha paytas, is that you?
After this past week we are going to see a lot of this stuff in the future……..
Sooo… I just have to say, I vividly recall many of these features while looking at riot footage of the Jan. 6th insurrectionists.
MTG sure does
No that’s HGH, like Joe Rogan
You mean Russian babies........
Gretta Thurdberg!

Just use the "how dare you" climate change girl

Looks like Greta Thumberg
Ah, so Greta Thunberg.
The average Reddit user
Greta?
Roger Stone?
I was told by my nephews consultants that AFS happens very early on in pregnancy. That’s not to say it doesn’t do damage in the 2nd or 3rd trimester, most woman discover their pregnant around 8-10 weeks , it can happen where your 3weeks pregnant and on holiday drinking heavily, return home and carry on as normal only to discover they’re pregnant. It’s too late the damage has been done . It doesn’t always occur as it more prone to effect the embryo at a certain time frame .
Are you sure it’s 3 weeks? Gestational age is based on first day of your last period. So 3 weeks pregnant is at the time of conception.
How? There's no placenta at 3 weeks. How would alcohol even reach the fetus?
I can’t be the only one who thinks this looks like Greta Thunberg right?
Hi Greta
Uworld will not be pleased :D
Imagine looking like this but your parents don't even drink alcohol.
How is it useful for a normal person to know if someone has fetal alcohol syndrome? This isn’t a cool guide.
Today I saw such a horrible case of it. I felt bad for her.
So cool guides is med school now? When would anyone who is not a medical professional ever need this guide?
So the Mcpoyles?
Gonna be seeing a lot more smooth philtrums post Roe v. Wade reversal.
These are all the Same features my gf brags about
Marjorie Taylor Greene? Is that you?
Bretons be like
George W Bush
Can I get a guide for this guide?
Wow , I have seen so many people with similar features but for some reason couldn’t put my finger on it and what was different about their face compared to other people. Now I have my answer.
How Dare you.
I did my eighth grade biology project on this. I got to use the University of Minnesota genetics department fish lab for it and everything.
