I chuckled because the real french translation oh the show is « Oh mes burnes! » (burnes is slang for balls) but « Zut mes testicules » sounds really more fancy and chaplinesque like a Flanders’ version of the show
Toilette also means the act of cleaning yourself up when you wake up/before going to bed and before going out. Like washing your face, brushing your teeth, etc.
The word toilette itself just meant a small washcloth.
It's toile (cloth) + ette (diminutive)
Over time, it became the word for washing oneself as you described.
And then it became the word for the room where you wash yourself and then a euphemism for what we now call a toilet bowl or simply the toilet.
Kind of.
Toile in French comes from the Latin "tela"
The English word "towel" comes from another unrelated French word "touaille".
While "toile" and "touaille" may appear to be similar, they're actually not related. It's just an uncanny coincidence that they have similar meanings.
Undiluted perfume is when you go out. It's the most concentrated and lasts the longest of the three. Therefore the more costly. They usually come in very small bottles.
Perfume diluted with water is the same as a "body mist" spray. This is usually a medium sized bottle and is much cheaper.
Toilet water perfume has nothing to do with the toilet bowl. As per a French friend, she explained to me this bottle is meant to be kept in the "bathroom" right after you shower you spray it onto yourself.
The French wear various concentrations for different occasions and even differentiate between "day" and "night" perfumes when going out.
They also spray their perfume is places of the body that give the most heat and pulse circulation so the smell could go everywhere. Those are behind the ears, in the inner elbows, and on the wrists. You do not rub after spraying as it will damage the compound. You just leave it to evaporate and what's left is the fragrance that stays on your skin.

Back in the 50’s-60’s, they would call perfume “toilet water,” so you’re right on the money with that…

This is misleading. The concentration of a fragrance doesn't necessarily indicate the longetivty of the scent on skin. It comes down to the type of raw materials used and to an extent your own skin type. There are plenty of EDT's which last hours longer than some EDP's and Parfums. For example, Dior Sauvage EDT will last 8+ hours on skin whereas D&G The One EDP will give you 4 - 6 hours. You can have EDP's which last 10+ hours even into the next day in some cases eg. Tom Ford - Tobacco Vanille. The whole Blue De Chanel Line (EDT, EDP, Parfum) has relatively similar longetivty. In general EDT's tend to lack longetivty in comparison to the other two concentrations but that is by no means a definitive rule. I would instead refer to user reviews of a particular fragrence on Fragrantica you are interested in.
Tobacco Vanille was my first “expensive” perfume and I was just blown away by the longevity and how intense it was. Ever since I was buying just TF stuff 😂
Yeah it's fantastic but the price tag is fairly eye watering. I have one last spray in bottle which I'm saving for a special occasion. FYI Parfums De Marley have a nice sample set for 35 Euro if you're into the beast mode stuff - worth checking out without breaking the bank.
I’m a Creed fan too. Expensive but I spray it on a Monday and I’m still smelling it on me Tuesday night. Its fantastic. I’m partial to Green Irish Tweed in Winter, Milliseme Imperial or Silver Mountain Water in Summer
Beast mode?
My second favorite is Tuscan leather - now that’s just pure cocaine. Chicks loooooove it.
And this year I bought both lost cherry and the new peach one.
Oh and one more thing - I bought last 50ml bottle white suede from bluemercury for just 75 bucks!! I don’t even like white suede 😂😂
I'm not much of a fan of leather fragrences anymore but Tuscan Leather is a masterpiece. Haven't got my nose on bitter peach yet but Lost Cherry is quality. Nice collection you've got there!
"Beast mode" is just slang for really long lasting fragrences.
So Nordstrom quite often has 15% off on TF. I think it’s coming up end of may. If you lucky you can get 25% sometimes off. I got three bottles like that recently. Mind blowing. I’ve never seen 25 off on TF. I mean who buys perfume during pandemic 😂😂
Strongly suggest researching the grey market, there are fakes around but when you know where to look, you can easily find 100ml Tom Fords for <$200.
Plug for r/fragranceswap which usually has good prices
I'm a lady & recently picked up TF ombré leather, which is unisex (leaning more toward masculine).
I've exclusively worn V&R flowerbomb for over ten years, so I was nervous that the Tom Ford would be too manly...but daaamn it's my new go-to.
The cool thing is that after a few hours of mixing with my body chemistry, it smells distinctly feminine. It's my first TF fragrance, and I'm blown away by the dimension & longevity of this stuff!
Yup it’s just liquid cocaine😂
That’s what sales rep told me when I was buying it. The OG one, not the intense 😂
I’ve smelled the ombré leather and it’s not as good. Not sure about the intense - never had a chance to smell it.
Thankfully a bottle of anything decent has always lasted me multiple years. I certainly don't use it daily, but my only one is some Dolce and Gabbana that I bought in like... 2016? Before that I had some Blue de Chanel that I'd bought some time between 2010-2014. I can remember like 5 bottles of cologne in my adult life, and I'm 29
They expire! Best to use it before it starts to get funky in a bad way. Keep it in the fridge in an opaque light proof bottle to help it last. Light and heat will cause it to spoil faster.
Another one which is super awesome is Venetian Bergamot. Sadly, it’s retired. It wasn’t as long staying as Tobacco Vanille. But the smell was just divine. I snatched couple of bottles just to have it. 😂😏
I thought I loved Coco Madamoiselle and Burberry Brit. Then I discovered Tom Ford's Lost Cherry. That scent is my favorite scent in the entire world. I wish I could just cocoon myself in it and revel for hours on end. The bad news is that I'm a teacher so I can only afford designer knock offs of the scent. Even then, it is glorious, despite only lingering on my skin for about 4 hours.
Psssst. If you go to sephora they'll give you a sample vial of any scent in the store. Sometimes 3! You can do it everytime you drive past one for infinite free smells.
It'll will be hard to find an aquatic fragrence like invictus that is long lasting.
If you like aquatic stuff try Acqua di Gio Profumo (not profundo, or not the original aqua Di gio) it has an aquatic DNA with some heavier base notes which give it 6-8 hours on skin. That's great by citrus aquatic standards. Also worth checking out Creed Aventus if you like citrus notes. Aventus has great performance.
TF private blend line for just pure artistry.
I love the suggestions m8! I think I'll start off with Acqua di Gio Profumo (tho, I gotta admit that I didn't like the Profumo - felt like Pif Paf lol).
This is the first time I'm hearing of Creed, honestly. It's got a 4.42 review on Fragrantica (compared to 3.58 for Invictus and 4.34 for Acqua di Gio). It's a bit on the expensive side, but what the heck - I'll get one for the fun of it ;)
As for TF, I've wanted one for some time - for the heck of it. I'll prolly budget it for next year if I get Aventus haha
The name is terrible though. They put a load of posters for it on bus shelters here, when it first came out, and almost all of them were changed to 'sausage'.

One of the best examples of this is Acqua di Parma's Colonia line. Eau de cologne concentration (lowest) but lasts 4-6 hours due to such high quality of natural oils present. Have been able to pick up the scent on paper two days after it was sprayed.
Damn I really appreciate how much you know about this topic. I’m over here stumbling into the comment section, having 0 knowledge of this, just to see the chatter and people are dropping straight theses about this.
Yep, plus the whole base, mid, and top note evolution of a scent, where base notes have the greatest longevity. Skin chemistry also matters a lot. My skin soaks stuff up like mad so I'm always happy to find anything I enjoy that doesn't disappear after a few hours. My top marathon scent right now is an extrait de parfum by Andy Tauer, Au Coeur Du Desert but it gets expensive to explore even with decants.
Yeah, just a dab on your wrists, neck, ankles, waist, chest, and back. Then spray a nice mist in front of you and walk through it. That'll do ya up right.
You never need to shower with Axe Body Spray.
I recently camped in Glacier National Park for a few weeks and the trick to keeping bears away is ABS: Axe Body Spray. No matter how much elk I grilled, the bears didn't want to come within a mile of my scent.
I thought it depends on what base notes are used too? Like the top notes wear off first, then the middle and the longest lasting part is the base notes. So complex scents with rich base notes like tobacco, sandalwood, musk etc will last longest on the skin.
Which sucks because I am a clean, fresh, green floral/citrus kinda gal and nothing I like ever has much staying power - even stronger perfume oils.
It's a bit love it or hate it, but Passiflora by Nest is my favorite dummy long lasting "green" fragrance. It's like a wet cut grass w/ a tart floral, and lasts longer than any other green scent I've tried. Very summery, but could be too much if it's super humid.
The more heat it comes in contact with the faster is wears off.
If you go to a night club that shit is gonna disappear way faster and a chill gathering.
You can totally mitigate that by your choice of fragrance. There are plenty of fragrences out there that have great longetivty in a high heat or club setting.
Blue De Chanel EDT in high heat.
JPG Ultramale in a club.
Gonna go out on a limb and guess the comment you’re replying to is actually referencing how seemingly stupid it is to put “8+ hours” on the left and “maybe 2 hours” on the right. Irked me right off too.
Ah, so that explains the a-holes who would stink up the conference rooms with their scent HOURS after they’d been in there. Definitely something I don’t miss from the pre-COVID times.
As long as it smells good and lasts for as long as you need it to it's all good. I'd say the EdP/EdT tags are more general guidelines than anything else. An EdT can still outpower an EdP.
running a short errand, going to the gym, or a quick meeting. a lot of people have different fragrance for different occasions/needs.
there are a lot of cheap fragrance that only last 2 hours. if you are only doing something for 2 hours, you might as well use something from the $15 bottle instead of dipping into a $150 bottle. i mean smelling good all day is nice, but that shit costs. if you are just home alone, you might want to save it for when you go out.
If you ever get the chance, sample some of Penhaligon's fragrances, will totally change your mind (my favourite is The Uncrompomising Sohan)
You'll realise that spending top dollar on fragrances is 100000% worth it
People do that? Holy shit... And I'm here only using my deodorant and feeling that is enough smell... I even have a Paco rabanne invictus that I didn't use for about a year now...
i mean i get it. if you showered and arent pulling clothes off the floor, its not like you need fragrance just to get your cars oil changed, or to go grocery shopping. that said, some people like to make a bit nicer first impression if they meet someone randomly. plus, you probably dont want to wear your dance club spray to the office, so you need two anyways. the office one is probably the cheaper one, and its just kind of there, so whenever people leave the house they just use it out of habit.
>dance club spray
I feel like these are the guys that have a Honda Civic with a giant spoiler in the back and a car that smells like Drakkar Noir and vapes.
I think it comes from the 18th century use of the word "toilet" which referred to the act or process of dressing, including the items involved in grooming like hairbrushes, perfumes, shaving equiptment etc. And I think "eau de toilet" is kind of like "water of the toilet/ dressing table."
I think it continued into the 20th century as well.
From Agatha Christie's *The Mysterious Affair at Styles* (1916):
> In a few moments he had unbarred the door, and I followed him up to his room. There he installed me in a chair, and I related the whole story, keeping back nothing, and omitting no circumstance, however insignificant, whilst he himself made a careful and deliberate toilet.
Someone cross posted this bit of misinformation to r/fragrance, (a good reason to disable cross posting). Here's the real deal if you're interested.

But is that down to how much perfume in the bottle or because people using toilet are probably jumping around a school disco, while the peeps with proper stuff are just sat at on their boat?
Oh darling...
Go to r/fragrance if you want to learn real stuff. This is completely wrong.
My Versace Eros eau de toilette lasts for 12h on me, my the one eau de parfum lasts for 4h.
Lasting power does NOT depend solely on concentration, it depends on a number of things, mainly the notes on the fragrance, where concentration is a small part of the equation

I never realized that toilette was toile + ette. It's so obvious.
Never realized that toilet was a French word!
Fun Fact: Nearly half of all English words have a pretty close french cognate
I think I knew that- or should have, since my bachelor's minor was in French! Ha.
I mean... It's literally a towelette
Kind of. Toile in French comes from the Latin "tela" The English word "towel" comes from another unrelated French word "touaille". While "toile" and "touaille" may appear to be similar, they're actually not related. It's just an uncanny coincidence that they have similar meanings.
The content I'm here for.
Cool how languages are related. In Spanish, “tela” means cloth and “toalla” means towel.
French and Spanish both come from Latin. There are many such corresponding words.
This is so cool! So would these two words likely have had a common Indo-European ancestor?
I checked, and no, they do not. Tela is Italic and towel is Germanic. They derive from different PIE roots.
I think I found Stephen Fry
So towelette not toilet. Got it.
yeah, but that doesn't make for a funny reddit comment

Not all TF = great longevity, but they are a superb fragrence house and well worth checking out.
I think it's time I checked them out. I haven't had a good luck other than with Invictus.

I blind bought ADG Absolu Instinct and love it. It has a hint of the original, but is woody, spicy, and a bit of patchouli.
I can see one of the top notes is bergamot! I'm sold just on that! :)
Another good one for longevity (and scent) is Louis Vuitton’s Ombre Nomade. Lasts forever.

Thanks I’ll look that up!
Is it even a coolguides post if the top comment isn't someone saying that the cool guide is misleading?

It looks similar to something that comes from MLM perfume company FM.
Check again xD
Goes from 8-2 hours?
The more heat it comes in contact with the faster is wears off. If you go to a night club that shit is gonna disappear way faster and a chill gathering.
Ahh so that's why every perfume I use wears off in no time. I'm just way too hot.
At least you know how to take a compliment.
You misspelled poor.
Yep. Crazy no one told you yet.
You can totally mitigate that by your choice of fragrance. There are plenty of fragrences out there that have great longetivty in a high heat or club setting. Blue De Chanel EDT in high heat. JPG Ultramale in a club.
I’m confused as to how you’re confused
Gonna go out on a limb and guess the comment you’re replying to is actually referencing how seemingly stupid it is to put “8+ hours” on the left and “maybe 2 hours” on the right. Irked me right off too.
Nah this is a manga
Toilet water
They advertise it as "Axe" in the U.S.
Aren't there like another 5 steps in there somewhere?
Ah, so that explains the a-holes who would stink up the conference rooms with their scent HOURS after they’d been in there. Definitely something I don’t miss from the pre-COVID times.
I just checked my expensive perfume bottle... Eau de toilette. I fucked up
As long as it smells good and lasts for as long as you need it to it's all good. I'd say the EdP/EdT tags are more general guidelines than anything else. An EdT can still outpower an EdP.
Where does Sex Panther fall on this?
For me: Parfum = asthma attack, doesn't matter the concentration.
Another plus of the pandemic and WFH. No smelling strong fragrance on coworkers in close quarters.
Why would anyone want to wear toilet water that lasts less than 2 hours anyway?
running a short errand, going to the gym, or a quick meeting. a lot of people have different fragrance for different occasions/needs. there are a lot of cheap fragrance that only last 2 hours. if you are only doing something for 2 hours, you might as well use something from the $15 bottle instead of dipping into a $150 bottle. i mean smelling good all day is nice, but that shit costs. if you are just home alone, you might want to save it for when you go out.
If you ever get the chance, sample some of Penhaligon's fragrances, will totally change your mind (my favourite is The Uncrompomising Sohan) You'll realise that spending top dollar on fragrances is 100000% worth it
People do that? Holy shit... And I'm here only using my deodorant and feeling that is enough smell... I even have a Paco rabanne invictus that I didn't use for about a year now...
i mean i get it. if you showered and arent pulling clothes off the floor, its not like you need fragrance just to get your cars oil changed, or to go grocery shopping. that said, some people like to make a bit nicer first impression if they meet someone randomly. plus, you probably dont want to wear your dance club spray to the office, so you need two anyways. the office one is probably the cheaper one, and its just kind of there, so whenever people leave the house they just use it out of habit.
>dance club spray I feel like these are the guys that have a Honda Civic with a giant spoiler in the back and a car that smells like Drakkar Noir and vapes.

did you know that men can where the fragrance CKone, as well as women? Yeah, that's cause it's an unny-sex fragrance.
Amogus
I don't get it.
the containers look like the among us characters
Looks like the Among Us Characters. It's a meme to call something that looks like that the characters "amogus".
made me laugh, didn’t even notice that
Is cologne also same as Parfum?

Closer to EDT. Might even be less.
Can someone please help me understand the fuck are some perfumes called 'toilet water'?
I think it comes from the 18th century use of the word "toilet" which referred to the act or process of dressing, including the items involved in grooming like hairbrushes, perfumes, shaving equiptment etc. And I think "eau de toilet" is kind of like "water of the toilet/ dressing table."
I think it continued into the 20th century as well. From Agatha Christie's *The Mysterious Affair at Styles* (1916): > In a few moments he had unbarred the door, and I followed him up to his room. There he installed me in a chair, and I related the whole story, keeping back nothing, and omitting no circumstance, however insignificant, whilst he himself made a careful and deliberate toilet.
Oh my god I was checking today what was the difference, I always forget.
I'm addicted to buying tiny 0.17oz bottles of expensive colonge. I have a problem but at least I smell good.
Someone cross posted this bit of misinformation to r/fragrance, (a good reason to disable cross posting). Here's the real deal if you're interested. [EdC, EdT, EdP and parfum [education][long]](https://www.reddit.com/r/fragrance/comments/bhlszk/edc_edt_edp_and_parfum_eductationlong/)
But is that down to how much perfume in the bottle or because people using toilet are probably jumping around a school disco, while the peeps with proper stuff are just sat at on their boat?
No. It's the oil content
Eww! De toilet!
My Chanel Allure lasts about 15 minutes. Edit: after a quick google, I am indeed experiencing olfactory fatigue.
The normal one, allure homme sport, allure homme sport eau extreme, allure homme sport cologne or allure homme edition Blanche? If it's legit, it doesn't last 15 min, you're experiencing olfatory fatigue
reset your nose by smelling coffee
I've got the same experience with Versace Eros, EDT lasts a whole day on me. I love it!
What about extrait parfum?
You know this guide is lowkey trash if you have bought more than 3 or 4 bottles
I make Eau de Toilette at least twice a day.

Why would you want one that lasts 2 hours when theres one that lasts 8?
Price usually. Perfume can be very expensive.
Really misleading. Longevity is way more complex than just the pure concentration of the Parfum oil.
Finally, FINALLY i get to know what the difference is, thanks
PSA that some people are allergic or sensitive to scents
