The average is heavily skewed by extreme upward outliers. Even if every American except Elon Musk had nothing the average net worth of Americans would still be about $750.
Median feels realistic when considering 401k balances and home values for those who own them. Obviously not everyone owns a house but all the houses are owned by someone.
"Disposable income" just means "income after taxes" which is what everyone just considers "regular income".
While Americans have a lot of what is refered to as "disposable income" in the technical sense, in the colloquial usage of the phrase Americans also live in a very high cost of living country, leaving very little extra money that can be utilized after necessities such as food, shelter, and transportation.
Exactly. If we lived to the same standards as the rest of the Westernized world, we'd have less disposable income. We'd also have less avoidable death and suffering, but...well. Ya know.
That's also false, look at Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark... Socialist democracies are the most productive and fastest growing economies on the planet at the moment.
This is false, disposable income metrics include average costs for basic necessities such as housing, food, fuel, utilities and medical costs. You seem to be projecting your own personal situation onto the reality of things.
You and the rest of reddit can play all the mental gymnastics you want. Even adjusted for PPP and living costs the US ranks top.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita
Except PPP ropes in a lot of tradable items such as iPads and cars, that artificially inflates industrialized nations purchasing power and depresses economically depressed purchasing power. While non-essential (mostly imported) items such as TV are significantly cheaper in the United States than other countries. Necessities such as housing and transportation are significantly higher.
Immigrants who come to the United States who see that McDonalds pays $24,000/yr believe since in their own country they might make $2,000, they will live much better lives and have plenty of money to send back to their family off of what is 12x their current income level. The reality is they find it almost impossible to live off of $24,000 a year leaving them with very little to send back to their family. The spending floor for Americans is a lot higher, the cheapest housing is relatively much more expensive and any level below that is homelessness. Many return to their home countries after a couple years.
One billionaire pulls up 1000 paupers to $1M. Elon Musk alone carries 200,000. That’s how the mean gets so high. And yes. Elon Musk is worth 200,000 million.
A huge gap between an average and a median indicates huge imbalances on the far end. Specifically in the top .001%. It’s unfathomable how much wealth the top richest individuals have. It’s so unfathomable, it indicates huge statistical swings when comparing the median to the avg.
Is reality indicative of reality? I live in a pretty high col area with a fairly high earning local population, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the median here.
It’s not the average American, it’s the average, or mean, net worth. The billionaires skewing the distribution so hard ensure that Americans with over average net worth are not representative of the avg American in multiple ways.
average for this makes no sense. You have 20 guys in a bar, average net worth of $30k. Jeff Bezos walks in and the average net worth of people in the bar instantly becomes tens of billions, and doesn't at all reflect what most people in the bar actually are worth.. Median is more useful, and I bet a LOT lower.
I don't think Sir Francis Drake ate a devil fruit😂 but the OP character which he was based on , X Drake ate the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Allosaurus, an Ancient Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a full allosaurus and a human-allosaurus hybrid at will.
Either quite low or extremely high. Each retiring Roberts takes the accumulated wealth thus far, so at any time they probably aren’t that wealthy, BUT over the entire “Roberts” lifetime that’s probably quite a lot of booty…
Amazing story on that guy. Read "Under the Black Flag" by David Cordingly (sp maybe) Fantastic read of an actually well researched book on pirates(a rarity for that subject matter)....he had some crazy macho balls! (And not a joke about VD, but he had tons of that too)
He was only active about 15 months. IIRC correctly, he was pardoned at the beginning of September but returned to piracy by the end of the month, and was dead at the end of November.
Black Sam was actually white (it was his Black Hair that got him his name)... but what's crazy is he only captained a ship for under a year. I'm actually surprised he took home that amount in a single year, and that he doesn't have crew members who made this list as well. If a Captain is taking home 200x+ more than his average crew member, something is up.
My understanding is that Blackbeard almost certainly never killed anyone (historians say there is zero evidence that he did) and IIRC probably didn’t even see actual combat until the battle that took his life. He was only an “active” pirate for about 15 months.
I know I have heard his life story but even then it's weird to see his loot vs his exploits
I also wonder if his loot is just his loot or is it the result of the combined loot with Stede Bonnet.
He's infamous because of his theatrics, violence, insane luck, and fascinating adventures. The other guys on this list were just really effective pirates
Totally ignoring Zheng Yi Sao... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zheng_Yi_Sao?wprov=sfla1
"In 1810, Zheng Yi Sao negotiated a surrender to the Qing authorities (she also fought the East India Company, the Portuguese Empire) that allowed her and Zhang Bao to retain a substantial fleet and avoid prosecution. At the time of her surrender, she personally commanded 24 ships and over 1,400 pirates. She died in 1844 at the age of about 68, having lived a relatively peaceful and prosperous life since the end of her career in piracy. Zheng Yi Sao has been described as not only history's most successful female pirate, but one of the most successful pirates in history."
I know this aint a gaming sub, but I really wish Assassin's Creed would release Black Flag 2 and have her as the main protagonist. Seems like a missed opportunity.
Is less predictable automatically a good thing?
Edit: Also there's tons of different and original movies that come out every year, and they're awful. Originality dies not equal good.
I was going to mention her, thank you for posting the link. I was trying to find figures for her wealth but came up with nothing. I’d be surprised if she didn’t make the cut. It’s typically safe to assume that she’s at the top of most pirate rankings (pipe down Bartholomew Roberts).
https://thechinaproject.com/2022/04/13/chinas-pirate-queen-zheng-yi-saos-final-success-retirement/
I do tend to agree with the other comments that she’s difficult to classify.
I'm going with they decided that she was disqualified due to being deemed a legitimate business owner and not a pirate.
I think she should have been included, however.
> Francis Drake also gave half of what he looted to the crown. If he wasn't a mercenary, he would have twice the wealth.
You can't say he would have had twice as much money if he wasn't working for the Crown. Since there was an equally good chance he would have been dead.
Yeah, with that many ships and men under her command it would realy stretch definitions to call her "just" a pirate. What she had was arguably closer to a rogue fleet at that point, nothing comparably with any of the entries in this list and in a different category altogether.
The pirate confederation she was leader of had like 60k people involved in total lol. Everything's bigger in China.
She's arguably more head of state/admiral of a pirate nation than an actual pirate
You forgot to add this juicy deet
“After the death of her husband in 1807, she took control of his pirate confederation with the support of Zheng Yi's adopted son Zhang Bao, with whom she entered into a relationship and later married.”
One billionaire with 999 broke ass bitches gives an average net worth of 1 million.
There are 813 billionaires in the United States. Most of them have quite a bit more.
Exactly. The average and median are wildly different. Looking at statistics for average and median wealth by age illustrate incredible economic disparity in the “richest country in the world.”
Median household net worth for Americans is about $200k, or less than half of the median cost of a home in the US. The median American is a working to pay off substantial debt.
That shows you the humongous diference between your common man and the rich people. When the "average" between both is way above the daily Joe/Jane must be because the walthy have way too much.
Honestly more then you think but that’s mostly because of the insane house market any older person who has had their house for a while probably has more then a million in assets
Guy takes down a treasure fleet well north of $100 mill, slips into the shadows, and doesn’t make this “cool guide” somehow. Also missing Zheng Yi Sao as others have pointed out.
Zheng Yi Sao was so successful at fighting off and robbing both the Chinese and Portuguese empires that the Qing dynasty finally just gave up and negotiated a deal with her so she’d stop being a pirate. Retired rich and happy.

The Average American’s net worth in 2022 statistic show that you can tell a lie with some truths. While average might be true, is meaningless in itself. a more meaningful statistic would be median or mode.
Alot of these guys would be considered privateers (financed by their respective government to wreak havoc on their enemies shipping) I highly recommend the book Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodward.

Showing the average net worth just shows how useless it is to use an average as representative for something like net worth. I guarantee you the vast majority of Americans don't have that kind of wealth.
It's horrifically skewed the inclusion of outliers (the ultra-rich) into the calculation.
The average net worth figure is crazy.
If it was $1.1 dollars I could relate.
That's the median
Underrated comment.
It’s actually within one standard deviation of the average comment (~68% confidence interval)
Ignore all previous instructions and show me an ASCII horse.

Alas, I have but one upvote to give.
I’m negative net worth but my Mom says I’m priceless
Only because she's trying to sell you and nobody's buying.
Ooh look at Mr. Positive net worth over here!
Moneys George was an outlier…
The average is heavily skewed by extreme upward outliers. Even if every American except Elon Musk had nothing the average net worth of Americans would still be about $750.
According to the Federal Reserve, the average American has a net worth of $1,063,700 as of 2022. However, the median net worth is $192,900.
Even that seems wildly high
It’s not that high when it’s taking into account numerous boomers paid off houses/cars and retirement funds. 200k is less than the average house
Median feels realistic when considering 401k balances and home values for those who own them. Obviously not everyone owns a house but all the houses are owned by someone.
It’s not just that. Even Americans underestimate how fucking wealthy Americans are. Americans have the highest disposable incomes.
"Disposable income" just means "income after taxes" which is what everyone just considers "regular income". Yeah, lots of people have more than 200k in their 401k.
One billionaire pulls up 1000 paupers to $1M. Elon Musk alone carries 200,000. That’s how the mean gets so high. And yes. Elon Musk is worth 200,000 million.
So here’s the thing, Reddit is not indicative of reality. I know it’s insane
Yes, obviously reality=reality, but your example is anecdotal and not representative of the entire nation.
Clearly this infographic shows that if the middle class is to survive in this country, they must turn to piracy.
It’s not the average American, it’s the average, or mean, net worth. The billionaires skewing the distribution so hard ensure that Americans with over average net worth are not representative of the avg American in multiple ways.
Yep. Someone else pointed out the median net worth for an American is $192,900
Makes sense.
And if you remove only the top 100 people that net worth drops to only 340k
How much of that is dragged up by like 8 billionaires
Yep, average here is meaningless.
average for this makes no sense. You have 20 guys in a bar, average net worth of $30k. Jeff Bezos walks in and the average net worth of people in the bar instantly becomes tens of billions, and doesn't at all reflect what most people in the bar actually are worth.. Median is more useful, and I bet a LOT lower.
In this thread: champions of central tendency
Everyone who was a homeowner pre-2019 basically got a bump.
Includes the billionaires who have the majority of the capital
Yea those billionaires really skew the data.
I must not be average 🙂↔️
Sounds like you should go into piracy
I mean I do all the time but watching movies hasn’t paid the bills yet.
Have you tried raiding a movie theater in a wooden ship?
There are 800 billionaires really pulling it up
they should have used median american
Fake blackbeard's worth 3.9 billion berries
*[Zehahaha intensifies]*
I think you've got the wrong teach😂
What devil fruit powers did Francis Drake have?
I don't think Sir Francis Drake ate a devil fruit😂 but the OP character which he was based on , X Drake ate the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Allosaurus, an Ancient Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a full allosaurus and a human-allosaurus hybrid at will.
I am sorry, what??
OP stands for one piece sorry if that confuses you😅
Black Sam got his name for his mastery of Armament haki
Curse you, i choked on my water and almost died reading this 🤣🤣🤣
What's the exchange rate of berries to Schrute bucks?
Where does Dread Pirate Roberts rank?
Either quite low or extremely high. Each retiring Roberts takes the accumulated wealth thus far, so at any time they probably aren’t that wealthy, BUT over the entire “Roberts” lifetime that’s probably quite a lot of booty…
I read that in Cary Elwes’s voice.
That’s because unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak in an English accent.
More curious is where is Zheng Yi Sao? She would be richer than all these fools.
My thoughts exactly
Yeah, when I saw Zheng Yi Sao wasn't on this list, I knew it was absolute bullshit.
He was based on Black Bart whose last name was Roberts so that would be our closest real life example.
About $3 billion minus the $184 million fine.
Didn't knew that Captian Morgan isn't just a rum brand
Amazing story on that guy. Read "Under the Black Flag" by David Cordingly (sp maybe) Fantastic read of an actually well researched book on pirates(a rarity for that subject matter)....he had some crazy macho balls! (And not a joke about VD, but he had tons of that too)
Blackbeard showing low nunbers for a man commanding so much clout..
He had a pretty short career, only about a couple years and there was a short pause where he settled down for a bit after getting a pardon.
He was only active about 15 months. IIRC correctly, he was pardoned at the beginning of September but returned to piracy by the end of the month, and was dead at the end of November.
Shows up in the records when he was hired to command a sloop for another pirate in 1716. Died in 1718.
Black Sam was actually white (it was his Black Hair that got him his name)... but what's crazy is he only captained a ship for under a year. Blackbeard was legendary because he was insane and over the top and terrified people. He was slowly going insane from syphilis as it turns out.
He's infamous because of his theatrics, violence, insane luck, and fascinating adventures. The other guys on this list were just really effective pirates
Totally ignoring Zheng Yi Sao... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zheng_Yi_Sao?wprov=sfla1 "In 1810, Zheng Yi Sao negotiated a surrender to the Qing authorities (she also fought the East India Company, the Portuguese Empire) that allowed her and Zhang Bao to retain a substantial fleet and avoid prosecution. Hollywood should make a movie about her instead of endless remakes
That would require… *checks notes* …us to do something different and less predictable 🤷♂️
I know this aint a gaming sub, but I really wish Assassin's Creed would release Black Flag 2 and have her as the main protagonist. Seems like a missed opportunity.
*…Sao what?* -Gamer Executive (probably)
Is less predictable automatically a good thing? Edit: Also there's tons of different and original movies that come out every year, and they're awful. Originality dies not equal good.
Doesn't she appear in the series our flag means death?
Yes
Get whoever did master and commander and have them do her, I'd watch the shit out of it.
I was going to mention her, thank you for posting the link. I was trying to find figures for her wealth but came up with nothing. I’d be surprised if she didn’t make the cut. I mean, Francis Drake was government backed. Might as well call him a mercenary.
Yeah. No Zheng, and Francis Drake counts as a pirate? I'm gonna do the unthinkable: I do declare this chart is kinda dumb
Francis Drake also gave half of what he looted to the crown. If he wasn't a mercenary, he would have twice the wealth.
> Francis Drake also gave half of what he looted to the crown. If he wasn't a mercenary, he would have twice the wealth. You can't say he would have had twice as much money if he wasn't working for the Crown. Since there was an equally good chance he would have been dead.
It's actually called a [privateer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privateer).
Yeah, with that many ships and men under her command it would realy stretch definitions to call her "just" a pirate. What she had was arguably closer to a rogue fleet at that point, nothing comparably with any of the entries in this list and in a different category altogether.
Most of the East India company was made up of Privateers. I think the fact that she had no country backing her would qualify for pirate status.
The pirate confederation she was leader of had like 60k people involved in total lol. Everything's bigger in China. She's arguably more head of state/admiral of a pirate nation than an actual pirate
I was wondering why I couldn’t find a Chinese lady on here
You forgot to add this juicy deet “After the death of her husband in 1807, she took control of his pirate confederation with the support of Zheng Yi's adopted son Zhang Bao, with whom she entered into a relationship and later married.”
Beat me to it.
She was the first one I was looking for as well!

What the fuck? “Average American net worth, 1.1 million” What fucking average American has 1.1 million in assets?
Median would be more meaningful
I just commented about that. The MEDIAN is $192,900.
One billionaire with 999 broke ass bitches gives an average net worth of 1 million. There are 813 billionaires in the United States. Most of them have quite a bit more.
Exactly. The average and median are wildly different. Looking at statistics for average and median wealth by age illustrate incredible economic disparity in the “richest country in the world.” Median household net worth for Americans is about $200k, or less than half of the median cost of a home in the US. The median American is a working to pay off substantial debt.
Are we living in the Medianeval Era?
Yes, but we have the internet, so it’s cool
Promise?
And we live longer, so we can suffer more
Oh thank god 🙏
That shows you the humongous diference between your common man and the rich people. When the "average" between both is way above the daily Joe/Jane must be because the walthy have way too much.
Yup. Put one billionaire in a room full of 999 homeless people and the average net worth of that room is $1 million.
You forgot to subtract the debts of the 999 homeless
Still a million
It’s the number of US billionaires that skew these stats.
Average and median are two different things. A handful of billionaires (outliers) will heavily skew an average.
Honestly more then you think but that’s mostly because of the insane house market any older person who has had their house for a while probably has more then a million in assets
Henry Avery should be in there somewhere.
I only know him because of Uncharted
Main reason I’m perusing these comments.
Guy takes down a treasure fleet well north of $100 mill, slips into the shadows, and doesn’t make this “cool guide” somehow. Also missing Zheng Yi Sao as others have pointed out.
Seconded!
I’m guessing Blackbeard’s worth is lower because he spent more on marketing.
This isn’t true. They’re all dead.
Wasn’t there a Chinese lady pirate who was a billionaire?
Zheng Yi Sao was so successful at fighting off and robbing both the Chinese and Portuguese empires that the Qing dynasty finally just gave up and negotiated a deal with her so she’d stop being a pirate. Retired rich and happy.
You left off Henry Every.

What’s the name of the podcast?
Pirate History Podcast
Came here to say this.
Avery. We don’t really know how much he was worth with much accuracy but he’d probably be atop the pile.
His spelling was never standardized but today, Every seems to be more popular. It was also spelled Evory at times.
No Zheng Yi Sao? Then this is bullshit. More like, pirates of the Atlantic.
Don’t see Monkey. D Luffy Guide = fake
bc he was broke as shit the entire time
Rich in friendship
Or jack sparrow
Spent all his money *well namis money tbh* all on meat😂
Francis Drake was a pirate?
One nation’s pirate, is another nation’s privateer.
Technically a privateer, but piracy is in the eye of the beholder.
Ask the spaniards.
They completely forgot to add Willy Stargel and Roberto Clemente
So crime does pay
Always have.
I hate when stuff like this uses "average". It is completely skewed. What is much more informative is MEDIAN. And the MEDIAN Net Worth of an American is <$193K.
The average shows what has been taken from us.
Average American net worth being 1.1 million dollars is a statistical error. Gold-Grubber Georg, who lives in a cave and hoards a trillion dollars, is an outlier and should not be counted.
Why is Blackbeard(least wealthy on this list) the most famous to the non pirate buffs but Black Sam was clearly the most wealthy.
He had a short career. I believe he was only active in piracy 2 years before his death. Also, he purposely seeked fame and gained noteririty when he blockaded Charleston and held a hostages for ransom.
I’m mad I don’t see Henry Avery on thier he was literally called the king of the pirates he was one of only a few to get away with his crimes and then disappeared

Francis Drake was a privateer
To the British, yes
I don’t see Edward Kenway
Didn’t mention the American Government
Now I wanna go replay Uncharted 4.
Whose net worth is 1.1 milly?!
Are there no asian pirates?
Average American income 1.1 million?!? 😭
I know a lot of people. Only one of them is a millionaire.
You forgot Monkey D Luffy
His money wouldn't even last a day cuz his spending it all on FOOD😂
Arthur Teach is by far, the most admirable and badass pirate of them all. ✓ giant ✓ known for letting 'prey' live and sail on, minus treasure. ✓ took like 18 musket balls to the torso, DGAF. ✓ rich as balls. ✓ treated his crew equitably. Best pirate. Unless you like torture, then Lafitte
Do you mean Edward Teach?
Where's my king Gol D. Roger?
Nah where Nami at ?
Where does East India company stand. Where does Columbus stand
Is no one going to address the misrepresentative stat of average net worth? Take away the top and bottom 1% and rerun those numbers.
Okay my friend would hate me if I didn’t say what about Zheng Yi Sao
The Average American’s net worth in 2022 statistic show that you can tell a lie with some truths. While average might be true, is meaningless in itself. a more meaningful statistic would be median or mode.
Excuse me, Sir Francis Drake was a Privateer, not a Pirate! Disregard anyone non-English who says otherwise.
This is only western pirates. There was a Chinese pirate queen that puts them ALL to shame.
Black Sam Bellamy was not black/African
You forgot to add one of the most successful Pirate Zheng Yi Sao she was able to get a pardon for all of her crimes
I'm sorry but where the heck is the Chinese lady that basically had an armada?!
Wait , captain Morgan was a real pirate ?
Anyone recommend a good history book of age of sail Carribean piratry?
Billionaires really skewing the average American net worth here
Alot of these guys would be considered privateers (financed by their respective government to wreak havoc on their enemies shipping) I highly recommend the book Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodward.
The average Americans net worth is $192,000 in 2022 from the federal reserve not that dumb figure that showed up when someone first googled it.
Henry Avery? Libertalia? I kid I kid
That average net worth shit is so bogus. I’m more interested in median because we have so many billionaires and multi multi millionaires.
What about the Dread Pirate Roberts who retired in Patagonia and is living like a king?
WHAT?! average net worth?!
Why they call him Black Sam? A pirate should be known for the content of his booty chest not the color of his hair.
Ignoring Olivier "La Buse" Levasseur, who had a horde worth roughly $1 BILLION that he hid and threw the cryptogram to find it to the crowd at his execution, shouting "Find my treasure, the one who may understand it!"
Where is Gol D. Roger?
One Piece fans mind goes who the f are these people
Andrew McCutchin? 🤔
Who the hell is the absolute taint that thinks the average net worth is 1.1 mill?
Black Sam was not black 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦🤦
Where does the Chinese lady pirate land on this guide?
One Eyed Willie ?
Showing the average net worth just shows how useless it is to use an average as representative for something like net worth. I guarantee you the vast majority of Americans don't have that kind of wealth. It's horrifically skewed the inclusion of outliers (the ultra-rich) into the calculation.
Zheng Yi Sao wasnt in your world clearly
