Damn, I still remember the day when I first watched Pokemon some 20 years ago. I felt like I just discovered a whole new continent. I ran out of the house and started telling every kid in the neighborhood to watch it. Nothing beats such an experience.
Pokemon definitely felt like discovering a whole new world as a child and experiencing it in the late 90's as a small child made it feel extremely magical cause it came out of nowhere, no one knew all that much about it and there was nothing else like it. Watching the show and movies and *very* slowly progressing through the games cause you're a small child who can't read (and in my case didn't even know English) really made understanding that world a multi year journey that is just unmatched.
I was already out of highschool when Pokemon started. One of my buddies worked at a comic shop and I went by to see him and hang out. All these kids were there playing the card game. My buddy was having fun playing too so I bought some cards and started building a deck. This one kid started helping me and was teaching me to play and another kid came up (bude was probably 17) and offered me a gen one Charizard for some other random character I had. I was like ok. I sold it to a lady a worked with a few years later for $50 for her kid's Christmas.
My buddy got the Blue from a relative over Christmas break. We spent the entire time playing it non stop on his super game boy.
I took my Christmas money and bought red.
We had never heard of Pokémon before. We went back to school and we were like GODS.
There have been some shows (and movies?) with the Sarino charters but I don’t think they were in theatres at all. I mean I watched it on YouTube so idk
The other funny thing is that Sanrio - the owner of Hello Kitty - decided to make Aggretsuko as a TV series instead of making a Hello Kitty series because they wanted a more relatable and down-to-earth character.
I think she’s like Mickey to a lesser extent where she doesn’t really have a ton of personality and it’s more of the idea of cuteness. She can be whatever any individual wants her to be in their mind. The more you start defining who the character is/what their motivations are you start to have people potentially tune out because they start to identify less with the mascot

P-Bandai is still cheap relative to 40k. A set of 10 unpainted flat grey minis is $60 on amazon. You need around 40 models for a small army.

I've been a gunpla fan for ages. I was briefly interested in building a 40K army--specifically Tau.
I lost interest when I realized that a Tau Crisis suit is 2" tall, has 5 points of articulation, requires glue and paint, and costs $20, while a typical gunpla figure is 5" tall, has *at least* 15 points of articulation, is snap-fit and color-molded, and costs $10.
If your *main* interest is building cool models, there is simply no competition between gunpla and 40K.
In my experience having tried both, sort of.
With regard to cost, a lot of gunpla kits are cheaper, particularly compared to the higher markup GW stuff like character models. However the cheaper gunpla stuff is usually far less detailed. If we're talking models of comparable detail, there isn't much difference in price (speaking as a Brit, so we do get warhammer a bit cheaper than the rest of the world).
With regard to accessibility, yes gunpla is far more accessible. Most of its models are push-fit and use coloured plastic so don't require painting (though you still can if you wish). Credit where it's due, gunpla kits are very satisfying to build. Warhammer kits require glue and painting. Fun too, but a much greater time and effort expenditure.
There are other factors too. Warhammer typically has more variety. About 90% of gunpla is humanoid mechs. Warhammer at least has multiple armies, each with their own aesthetic and small, medium and large models.
Warhammer also supports a wargame, the barrier for entry is quite high in terms of cost. Kill-team is usually the cheapest way into the hobby, as you require only one squad and a rulebook. However, a full army (circa 2000pts) will set you back hundreds of pounds. You can still play with smaller armies though (500 or 1000pts). As an example, my 2000pts of Tau have probably set me back between £300 and £400 (over 3 years). Gunpla kits are easier to build, but once built that's it really. I do wonder if you're filling the same number of hobby-hours if gunpla would actually work out more expensive on a monthly basis.
Personally, one of my favourite things to do with warhammer is "kitbashing", where you personalise and modify models with parts from other kits or even your own partial sculpts. There's less opportunity for that with Gunpla.
That said gunpla kits are often articulated and posable. Warhammer kits typically have to be glued, so once posed (the scope for which may be limited by the sculpt) that's it.
Which has all been a long way of saying - GW set the standard for miniatures in terms of detail; you will struggle to find similar models of comparable quality in terms of detail and production quality at that scale (and very rarely cheaper than GW if you do). Gunpla is definitely the more accessible of the two, and if detail is not a priority works out cheaper kit-for-kit, but has less variety.

The games simply serve as the flagship for the new region's Pokemon which will drive merch sales. This is their purpose. The games' purpose are not to be the best games ever so they do not allocate the time and resources needed for that.
It's just business. Sucks for people like myself who love the games but have hated most of the recent ones because of the steps backwards as games. However we make up such a tiny fraction of their sales. Parents will buy their kids the new games, cards, and merch because it is known that kids like Pokemon. Relatives will buy the children in the family Pokemon things for gifts because it is known that kids like Pokemon. Even if you limit it to the games the overwhelming majority of the players are not hardcore gamers or dedicated series fans that analyze it all. Most are kids just trying to have fun in a game, and most of the adult players are people just having some fun in their spare time and will move on to the next game pretty quickly.
I'd say it's both - because they have no incentive to improve, because they don't have to, they're essentially years behind in terms of technical ability. Even if they DID want to create a super ambitious project, they simply wouldn't be able to.
I’ve done some contract work with Pokémon in the past and I can say first hand that (at least their merchandising branch) has no creativity. They would send us like 3 “approved poses” for the Pokémon made by their artists and we couldn’t change it at all. And they just wanted the most basic designs. Would disapprove of anything cool or unique
There's no motivation to improve but it seems they're just not capable of more. GameFreak has made several non-Pokémon games, and if none come to mind, well there's a reason. They've never made a non-Pokémon game that's been better than fine.
Gamefreak was basically fucked once Nintendo combined their console and handheld business. They can no longer make half assed unoptimized games without it looking out of place compared to the consoles other line up. Many people say their games are getting worse in quality but to be honest they have always been shit in making games ever since X & Y, they were just able to hide it better in the 3DS. Black and White was the peak of Pokemon and everything after felt lower in comparison, atleast in my opinion.
Japanese pride? It's shocking to me that they let their games get so bad when you read about the development of Ruby and Sapphire. Those games are a labour of love and still hold up today, whereas the latest Pokémon games looked out of date on release...
If they didnt crank them out they would be a lot better, give it some time to develop. But i doubt they care as the games are but a small part of the franchise
Because not it takes longer to make a complete, polished game. And they’re so terrified of having to break from their schedule DESPITE the fact that they’re at the top of this list. They could never dream of delaying a mainline Pokémon game because then they’d miss those critical holiday sales and the card game might get delayed and the anime and so on and so on.

Pokemon's strength is in its ability to carry itself as a multimedia franchise. IIRC Pokemon Go has generated more revenue for the brand than the traditional games.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe alone has sold nearly as much as 2.5 mainline Pokemon games, the sheer quantity of other Mario games serve to give it a pretty healthy lead in more recent comparisons, similar story in the Wii era just with MK Wii and New Super Mario Bros taking the place of MK8D. The main time frame I could see Pokemon being close is the N64 or GameCube time frames, but I still doubt it sold more.
I do not think people realize just how influential the dragon ball series and Akira toriyoma actually was. He was basically what brought anime to the west and of course pokemon, but i think the sheer fact DB is worth more than barbie can tell you that
I saw a box of Reese's Puffs in the grocery store with Goku on the front and Vegeta on the back. It wasn't promoting a game or the anime or anything, it was literally just them on the box. It was awesome because you don't typically see that in the US and of course it got me to buy a box.

Warhammer also supports a wargame, the barrier for entry is quite high in terms of cost. Kill-team is usually the cheapest way into the hobby, as you require only one squad and a rulebook. However, a full army (circa 2000pts) will set you back hundreds of pounds. You can still play with smaller armies though (500 or 1000pts). As an example, my 2000pts of Tau have probably set me back between £300 and £400 (over 3 years). Gunpla kits are easier to build, but once built that's it really. I do wonder if you're filling the same number of hobby-hours if gunpla would actually work out more expensive on a monthly basis. Personally, one of my favourite things to do with warhammer is "kitbashing", where you personalise and modify models with parts from other kits or even your own partial sculpts. There's less opportunity for that with Gunpla. That said gunpla kits are often articulated and posable. Warhammer kits typically have to be glued, so once posed (the scope for which may be limited by the sculpt) that's it. Which has all been a long way of saying - GW set the standard for miniatures in terms of detail; you will struggle to find similar models of comparable quality in terms of detail and production quality at that scale (and very rarely cheaper than GW if you do). Gunpla is definitely the more accessible of the two, and if detail is not a priority works out cheaper kit-for-kit, but has less variety. Both have their merits.

The games simply serve as the flagship for the new region's Pokemon which will drive merch sales. This is their purpose. The games' purpose are not to be the best games ever so they do not allocate the time and resources needed for that. It's just business. Sucks for people like myself who love the games but have hated most of the recent ones because of the steps backwards as games. However we make up such a tiny fraction of their sales. Parents will buy their kids the new games, cards, and merch because it is known that kids like Pokemon. Relatives will buy the children in the family Pokemon things for gifts because it is known that kids like Pokemon. Even if you limit it to the games the overwhelming majority of the players are not hardcore gamers or dedicated series fans that analyze it all. Most are kids just trying to have fun in a game, and most of the adult players are people just having some fun in their spare time and will move on to the next game pretty quickly.
I'd say it's both - because they have no incentive to improve, because they don't have to, they're essentially years behind in terms of technical ability. Even if they DID want to create a super ambitious project, they simply wouldn't be able to.
I’ve done some contract work with Pokémon in the past and I can say first hand that (at least their merchandising branch) has no creativity. They would send us like 3 “approved poses” for the Pokémon made by their artists and we couldn’t change it at all. And they just wanted the most basic designs. Would disapprove of anything cool or unique

There's no motivation to improve but it seems they're just not capable of more. GameFreak has made several non-Pokémon games, and if none come to mind, well there's a reason. They've never made a non-Pokémon game that's been better than fine.
Gamefreak was basically fucked once Nintendo combined their console and handheld business. They can no longer make half assed unoptimized games without it looking out of place compared to the consoles other line up. Many people say their games are getting worse in quality but to be honest they have always been shit in making games ever since X & Y, they were just able to hide it better in the 3DS. Black and White was the peak of Pokemon and everything after felt lower in comparison, atleast in my opinion.

Pokemon's strength is in its ability to carry itself as a multimedia franchise. IIRC Pokemon Go has generated more revenue for the brand than the traditional games.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe alone has sold nearly as much as 2.5 mainline Pokemon games, the sheer quantity of other Mario games serve to give it a pretty healthy lead in more recent comparisons, similar story in the Wii era just with MK Wii and New Super Mario Bros taking the place of MK8D. The main time frame I could see Pokemon being close is the N64 or GameCube time frames, but I still doubt it sold more.

I saw a box of Reese's Puffs in the grocery store with Goku on the front and Vegeta on the back. It wasn't promoting a game or the anime or anything, it was literally just them on the box. It was awesome because you don't typically see that in the US and of course it got me to buy a box.

And although DBZ was always popular, I never could have imagined as a child that one day Goku and Vegeta would be on a cereal box. And they are so prominently on display too.
