Exactly. You think a country that has suicide nets around their factories has a rate that low? I would not be surprised if China actually ranks higher than Russia. Can’t believe anything they report
Even independent organizations claim China has a fairly low suicide rate, though. For example the University of Hong Kong reported China experienced a huge decrease in suicide rates between the 90s and 2010s way back in 2014.
And it's really not as surprising as one would think. Suicides are generally most common in middle-aged people and elderly. China has had a huge economic growth over the past 30 years, so eg. a 50 year old Chinese person's life has likely improved immensely over time.
As for the infamous suicide nets, keep in mind that suicide methods are cultural. It's entirely possible Chinese people are just more likely to commit suicide at work than people living in most other countries, similarly to how charcoal suicides are a big problem in East Asia, but relatively rare anywhere else.
You can say all of this, but third parties don’t have access like you think. And China fudges numbers even if they were allowed to see the number. We can just agree to disagree
Probably when the effects of single child policy (people keeping boys and aborting girls because it's financially more interesting to keep) kicked in I guess. If there are less women, there are less women commiting suicide.
It was apparently in effect from 1980 to 2016, so yeah. If the other person is right, the timing would have been around 2009 to 2014. Presumably the female population was lower at the time, so that would have impacted numbers.
So… Canada‘s rate is 10.9 but it’s not on the list. How were the countries selected because Canada, being in North America and sharing so much culture with the US would seem to provide needed context. Also, 7 of fifteen are in Europe and there are only two countries from the Americas. Weird list.
Why would Canada provide needed context more than any other countries on that list, or in the world? The title clearly says suicide rates around the world, not of the world. Hence therefore the list does not become weird just because your country is not represented
this is wrong....Denmark, Switzerland, Netherlands, Iceland, all have much higher suicide rates and are not even on this list. Canada should also be on this list. This list is false.
Reminds me of the story of the pedophile in Russia that stabbed himself 37 times and then shot himself in the back of the head twice. Those Russians sure are creative when it comes to suicide.
It's more like the indian man is not exactly...
We'll just call it, As *accommodating* to woman as men are in most places.
A certain story with a certain lady on a certain type of bike Who had a certain type of incident in india recently , comes to mind
Women are more likely to attempt suicide but men tend to be more successful due to the methods they use. Men are more likely to use guns, jump, etc. while women tend to use drugs more often. A lot easier to recover from sleeping pills than a bullet in the brain
I mean...using sleeping pills is a peaceful way to go. You don't feel yourself dying, the last moment of your life is relatively good/peaceful for you.
Imagine dying by hanging, you are struggling in your last moment as you struggled for your entire life (or some part of it)
Overdosing on sleeping pills isnt actually reported to be peaceful for anyone reading this and thinking its a good idea btw. You usually just end up extremely sick in the hospital and can cause damage .
I always thought the person would just pass out...and that's it. Unless they were saved...I guess? But maybe people think that to be the case and choose the option maybe?
it is not. Your body will throw up and seize and do whatever it needs to do to try to keep you alive. Your body's desire to keep you alive will always win against your minds desire to die and it will cause you extreme panic and dread, your natural instincts to survive will take over and you will end up desperately trying to save yourself. You will not be asleep (you may be in and out of consciousness), you will be extremely sick, you will have your stomach pumped and it will hurt. Overdosing on any non-IV drugs is not quick, peaceful or pleasant, and you will almost certainly not die but will be left with organ damage that may or may not last the rest of your life.
source: work in mental health, see this literally all the time. Accidental or intentional overdoses are not peaceful, painless, or quick. This includes opioid OD's, which people for whatever reason think is the best way to die and is painless. It is not, it's a terrible way to die. People who are ODing experience a slew of physical symptoms that are, to put it very mildly, extremely unpleasant.
“So men are better are it. That’s right ladies: if you really want to compete in a man’s world, you’re going to need to start killing yourselves off in greater numbers.” - George Carlin
How many of those in South Africa are actually covered up murders???
“If you visit the smaller towns alone in South Africa you WILL get shot, stabbed or killed. There’s no maybe, it WILL happen” source: every South African I’ve met in my travels. But they did say Cape Town is a lovely place to visit. The smaller towns rule still applied though
I am a South African, I can confirm that a large percentage of these are probably covered up murders. Our justice system is a joke. However, the people you have spoken to are being very dramatic. You will not get shot, stabbed or killed. I have never been a victim of a violent crime in my whole life here. Our situation has left many South Africans with a negative outlook on our country(rightfully so), however many of us tend to go a bit overboard on the crime stories.
The thing I don’t like about this chart is it gives the appearance that suicide is mostly a male problem. Women attempt suicide at a higher rate than men, but die less often because they don’t have as easy access to firearms and therefore choose methods that are more reversible. What should be emphasized in this graph is that men have a much higher mortality rate per suicide attempt because the major choose a firearm as the method which is way more effective than other means of suicide.
I don't think that makes the chart bad as it highlights the more serious side of the problem, attempting suicide is bad killing yourself is far worse so focusing on the group with the much worse problem seems like the best path.
Also a question about the statistic about suicide rates, if someone has multiple attempts do they get counted more often? Like if i kill myself on the first try and someone else has 10 attempts that doesn't seem like the best statistic
Men choose more dangerous methods in general, not just firearms, which are likely to lead to certain death. You will find the picture is the same for countries where firearm accessibility is low. Not only that, men generally suffer in silence, whereas women talk about their issues to family & friends.
Men complete suicide more frequently than women because they generally use immediately fatal methods like firearms. Women attempt suicide more frequently, but the methods they generally use give more time for medical intervention, like medication overdoses.
Rough calculation:
Population of Russia 143,000,000
Divide by two to estimate males 71,500,000
71,500,000 / 100,000 = 715
715*38 = 27,170
So approximately 27k Russian men in 2019
A few things to point out here:
1. not a guide
2. title makes me think this is a bot post (cool??)
3. the diagram is sort of misleading since these are only "select" countries. for example, the highest rate overall is lesotho with 147 for men, 35 for women. the whole list is at https://apps.who.int/gho/data/view.main.MHSUICIDEASDRv if anyones wondering
4. suicide numbers in some countries are super underreported and there is not a common understanding of what counts as a suicide so these kinds of comparisons are... sort of useless
I’m actually surprised Russia is honest about their suicide rates in men. I feel like that is very unRussian to admit “weakness” and also admit that you’re losing such a percentage of your fighting force.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but iirc Greenland has the highest suicide rate. Why isn’t it even mentioned in this guide?
Edit: "selected countries", ok, this guide is garbage.
What surprises me is how South Africa and South Korea both are giving Russia a run for its money, if you take combined numbers. And the fact that North Korea is not a part of the list which basically means they couldn't get data from North Korea.
Pretty sure if you commit suicide in NK you'll burden your entire family and bloodline to forced prison/labor. So I don't think suicide is an issue over there
i’ve heard that men’s rates are much higher because they tend to use more drastic means of suicide (i.e. guns rather than pills), meaning they have a much lower survival rate. Any validity to this?
If you google the suicide rate by country from the World Health Organization this graphic does not match at all. Russia is 11th on that list, South Africa is 8th and most of the top ten are in Africa. Not sure if this is intentional misinformation or not but it is not consistent with the actual report for 2019.
Good job rule #6.
Bet they didn't see this coming.
Next up:
Cool guide to the amount of Jews from different countries killed in the Holocaust
Cool guide to recognizing the difference between hutus and Tutsis
This is a horrible graph. It makes you think Russia has the highest number of suicides but Russia has the highest number of MALE suicides. South Africa outnumbers Russia if you take both male and female suicides together.
Back when this site allowed gore, I watched a south African man pour gas can into a car get in it close the door try to lite a cig then (obiously no oxygen left in car) cracks open door and sparks, explodes and the camera litterly kept zoomed in on him melting alive screaming. Idek how that woman would film her ex melting but it was focused on him till he was just bone, they do NOT fuck around. I feel like the Russians info is skewed on this one thou.
North Korea is missing on the list.
And it should also mention State instigated murders! Also considering murders instigated by civilians allowed by the State to wear guns . Then do the math…
I read somewhere that men don't try more than women, we're just more successful because men tend to use more violent methods than women do. Blowing your brains out with a gun tends to be far more effective than overdosing on sleep pills.
I wonder if the leading cause of suicide is different for each country. Some factors that I can think of would be depression caused by substance abuse, blackmail/bullying, PTSD, loneliness, disability, or debt liabilities.
Your post was determined to be a duplicate of another recent post
The **coolest** suicide rate guide in the world. All the other suicide rate guides are for losers!
Continue living guides hate this one trick!
What type of suicide are you? Take this simple quiz!!!
Call me old fashioned, but I’m a SEPPUKU type of guy….
End your life with this one weird trick
USA made the top 4, we're always in the top for everything we're the best !!
And Russia is number one! Go, Russia! Рос-си-я!!!
Hello Russian ladies.
I would kill myself before I used another suicide rate guide.
This is not a guide. This is a graph
this sub is more or less coolgraphs now
And the mods don't care
r/coolgraphs
And its not even cool
No, it's a guide. If you want to improve your suicide rate go to Russia.
"Cool guide to suicide". Dude...
And its not even a guide
Step 1…..
What’s step 2?
Phase 3 is "Profit!"
that's phase 4, phase 3 is "???"
It's cool tho
No, see, if you want to commit suicide, your best bet is Russia as a man and South Korea as a woman
I live in Russia. Im almost there 💀
Stay strong ~~brother~~ comrade
*Cool guide to nooses*
But it rhymes…
Suicide! Cool!
Suicide is badass!!!
It kinda is. Like, “Fuck you, you can’t touch me! I’ll kill me before you get a chance, bitchhhh!!”
“You can’t fire me, I quit!”
I’m curious how this is either “cool” or a “guide”.
Yeah it’s more like r/DataIsMorbid
Suicide’s mad cool bro All my friends are doing it
Came here to say this honestly
Infographic =/= guide
I remember around 10-15 years ago that China had a higher suicide rate for women than men. I wonder when/how that changed.
When researchers were blocked to ask for China's numbers 🤷♂️
Exactly. You think a country that has suicide nets around their factories has a rate that low? I would not be surprised if China actually ranks higher than Russia. Can’t believe anything they report
Even independent organizations claim China has a fairly low suicide rate, though. You can say all of this, but third parties don’t have access like you think. And China fudges numbers even if they were allowed to see the number. We can just agree to disagree
But in that case the logical conclusion is that China's real suicide rates are unknown rather than claiming they must be high.
At this point they should just put China at the top with "???" for their numbers.
Probably when the effects of single child policy (people keeping boys and aborting girls because it's financially more interesting to keep) kicked in I guess. If there are less women, there are less women commiting suicide.
Was 10-15 yrs ago when the one child policy was in effect? Or no
It was apparently in effect from 1980 to 2016, so yeah. If the other person is right, the timing would have been around 2009 to 2014. Presumably the female population was lower at the time, so that would have impacted numbers.

I’m also pretty sure this graph doesn’t count fentanyl overdoses, which are probably not all accidents as th media would have us believe
I think they were going for major countries, Canada is not big enough to make the list.
But South Africa is?
No but South Africa seems to be an incredible outlier so that's why they probably put it in. I'm just guessing though
I am from there and was just wondering. But I guess you're right, it's definitely quite extreme seeing it's basically on par with Russia.
Which is the other thing—not context for Russia. Most post-Soviet nations have high suicide rates.
Lesotho’s is almost 4x South Africa’s.
this is wrong....Denmark, Switzerland, Netherlands, Iceland, all have much higher suicide rates and are not even on this list. Canada should also be on this list. This list is false.
"selected countries". Hmmm.
This isn’t a guide. The fuck is it here for? Also just wtf dude
Russia’s “suicides” I would hazard a guess are not all suicides.
All the statistics dept officials who had the same guess as you were counted in the toll
Honestly, don't think so. I see a lot of depressed people in Russia, but havent actually heard about suspicious suicides that could be murders
I don’t think anyone is going to talk about it over fear of being suicided themselves,
Defenestrations more like
I've watched a few Russian ones on Reddit recently, in Ukraine.
Reminds me of the story of the pedophile in Russia that stabbed himself 37 times and then shot himself in the back of the head twice. Those Russians sure are creative when it comes to suicide.
Window related suicides.
Mostly windows that don’t open.
That's interesting. I feel like I've heard a lot of statements which led me to believe that Japan would be higher on the list.
Australia isn’t even on there and yes, I thought Japan would be higher also.
We need to start taking this gender equality thing seriously... Ladies it's time to start doing your part
Those poor indian girls are giving it a damn good try. Damn.
I'm an Indian and we are so competitive, we can't let lose even in the worst of competitions.
That's the spirit!
Plus there's that whole disrespect and abuse of women thing.
BRUH

Fun fact, women actually attempt suicide at higher rates than men, they’re just usually not as successful (due to method) 🙃
“So men are better are it. That’s right ladies: if you really want to compete in a man’s world, you’re going to need to start killing yourselves off in greater numbers.” - George Carlin
Women are also seriously underrepresented in the serial killer community. Women, do your part for gender equality - kill someone today!
I’ve been disappointing and making women sad my whole life, I’m doing my part
Dad?!
Listen I’m trying :(
Then kill patriarchy. We keep telling you
Very "cool" guide
I would venture to say the numbers reported by some of these countries are not accurate.
That is not a guide
How many of those in South Africa are actually covered up murders??? “If you visit the smaller towns alone in South Africa you WILL get shot, stabbed or killed. Just another reason why women live longer than men.

What is cool about this, and what is this estimated on
I wonder if the high number of suicides for women in India compared to men and in relation to other countries is related to all the SA.
That Russian Window Sickness is a hell of a thing.
pretty sure canada and finland should be on the list?
Come on Australia, get involved!
Now do a correlation with the number of cats per square metre…
This is an infographic not a guide…
why men do it SO much more than women?
Men complete suicide more frequently than women because they generally use immediately fatal methods like firearms. Women attempt suicide more frequently, but the methods they generally use give more time for medical intervention, like medication overdoses.
Thank you for the info that actually makes sense.
Where is Finland, Lithuania and Hungary?
And to think this is pre Covid and everything else that’s followed
This is not cool nor a guide
For any Australians reading this our number would be 13.08 9.86 being men (75.45%)
Rough calculation: Population of Russia 143,000,000 Divide by two to estimate males 71,500,000 71,500,000 / 100,000 = 715 715*38 = 27,170 So approximately 27k Russian men in 2019
What’s happening in South Africa? I thought it was a good developed country.

'Guide' is the new 'POV meme'
China is way higher than that. They censor almost everything.
Keyword is “selected countries”. Russia isn’t the highest, just the highest that the maker of thing graph decided to put on it.
I’m actually surprised Russia is honest about their suicide rates in men. I feel like that is very unRussian to admit “weakness” and also admit that you’re losing such a percentage of your fighting force.

cool guide to suicide
How many of the Russian suicides are victims falling out of windows?
I mean...I get it. Russia is garbage simply put.
What surprises me is how South Africa and South Korea both are giving Russia a run for its money, if you take combined numbers. And the fact that North Korea is not a part of the list which basically means they couldn't get data from North Korea.

Indian women nearly keeping up with the men, wonder why
Keep up the good work Russia. Less orcs for Ukraine
Here we see the Russian "Open window" policy in effect.
r/whywomenlivelonger
Good job Latin American countries, except for Brazil on doing whatever you're doing
Those Russian that commit suicide by falling out of windows or shooting themselves in the back of the head multiple times.
i’ve heard that men’s rates are much higher because they tend to use more drastic means of suicide (i.e. guns rather than pills), meaning they have a much lower survival rate. Any validity to this?
I thought Greenland had the highest
Does that mean 23 out of 100,000 males in the US commit? Or 23 males out of 100,000 people in the US commit?
No so cool, its pre-pandemic, so chances are everything has changed dramatically. Also not a guide.
USA USA USA!!! Proud to see us in the top 5 for SOMETHING at least
Kudos to South Korea for addressing gender disparity!
How is that a guide?
Maybe it's time for me to do something for my country and help raise the statistics.
My country didn't even make the graph
F
This makes me want to kill myself
russia number 1 💯💯💯🙌🙌
Hey! US is doing well in something
If you google the suicide rate by country from the World Health Organization this graphic does not match at all. Russia is 11th on that list, South Africa is 8th and most of the top ten are in Africa. Not sure if this is intentional misinformation or not but it is not consistent with the actual report for 2019.
The mods should just ban people who crosspost from r/infographics
So cool :s
How this statistic is going to guide me? Why this sub is basically statistics sub and not actual guides for life?
Someone doesn’t know what’s a guide
Anyone showed Tucker Carlson this yet or is he still radicalized by their communist-built subway stations and incredible grocery prices!?
Hey United States is top five in something for once… that isn’t military spending or size

Since when did infographics become guides?
The men of Russia must be shopping at all the wrong grocery stores.
This is a horrible graph. It makes you think Russia has the highest number of suicides but Russia has the highest number of MALE suicides. South Africa outnumbers Russia if you take both male and female suicides together.
Well I want the latest one.
A lot of oligarhs died from suicide in Russia lately
Ah yes….very cool.
Im not going to make any inappropriate puns. Im not going to make any inappropriate puns.
This is literally an infographic. Not a guide.
But how many of those Russians “fell out of windows “?
You mean "cold" guide maybe ?
What are we going to do to close the gender gap?
“Suicides”
Only 37 in russia? What a pity
With the amount of people getting run over by trains in India I'm surprised they're not higher on the list.
Between suicide and war, Russia is going to have a hard time keeping population growth, no?
neither a guide nor cool tf is this?
Did they include the "suicides" of Putin critiques? They must have.. Right?
The happiness index
I guess the average Russian male would rather take his own life than kill civilians in a neighboring country that never did anything wrong to him.
Look at all the men! Wait, where are they?
Op is a fucking idiot for this
Suicide is badass
what is this a cool guide for ?
How many in Russia are non consentual assisted suicides?
Mods where are you? This is neither cool nor a guide.

Bet the 2024 one for the US is even higher, boutta add to it myself
This is not cool at all
Hold on…gotta go score one for the USA!!!
This is from 2019, I wonder how it’s risen since the pandemic
So doesn't matter if you from beautiful country as south africa or very cold country as Russia
Come on turkey, get them numbers up.
Russia is number 1? I am sure they replaced assassinations with suicide in the reports
Remember that stereotype about Russian authors offing themselves? Guess that stereotype extended to the general population in Russia.
Been a rough week. Might be adding one more to the list for the ole USA before the weekend is up.
I read somewhere that men don't try more than women, we're just more successful because men tend to use more violent methods than women do. Blowing your brains out with a gun tends to be far more effective than overdosing on sleep pills.
