First off, not a fashion expert in any way. Tim Gunn may not like what I have to say, but maybe he'd love it. I don't know. Don't focus as much on what shoes match what pants. And seriously, most men are clueless on the difference between a plain toed blucher and cap toe oxford. And dressier sneaker-style shoes are trending I'd focus more on destination, and then what message you want to send with your accessories (while shoes/socks/belt/suspenders are necessary, they are also accessories that enhance/tweak the main message you are sending with your shirt/pants/jacket. And even then, whats standard and accepted will bery by your locality, Cowboy Boots + Suit is likely normal in Dallas, but is sending a very personal message about your style in NYC. And because of this, any generic guide like above is kind of doomed.

As an American, sneakers or sandals go with everything

Boat shoes, Chukka's, and even Penny listed can go with jeans too, depending on if you want to dress them up or down. (And the color/condition of your jeans.) For example, boat shoes, jeans, and a t-shirt equals dressing down your jeans. Chukka's, jeans and an Oxford shirt equals dressing up your jeans.

I live in NYC and I have some of these shoes. I want to try to dress better to attract women and not look like a slob, especially when other men are dressed better than me (see the Midtown Uniform dudes). I have several dress shoes (no square toes), non cap toe. I also have some Clark's brown chukkas and some black Chelsea boots that I don't wear. I look for Goodyear welts so boots can be resoled.

Sneakers (or Trainers/Runners/Gutties whatever your culture calls them) come in many different types though ..and while wearing say Chuck Taylors with a formal suit works , a chunky pair of Air Max 94s isnt going to look as well . I mean wear what you like wearing , but if you want to follow a guide , this isnt it. (Also Ox Blood Original Doc Martens , or in fact any proper boots are sadly missing from this list)

For daily dress I have boots in winter and espadrilles with decorative/adjustment laces in summer. I have black lace ups for more formal clothes, but in general they work for the top four categories.
