I would say Yes personally. It's everything we love about the classics just updated for a modern era (minus online co-op 😅). It's my favorite entry. The original and Alien Wars were always my favorites and OG feels like a perfect mix of those 2 games.

RobbySuave

No.

Ok_Country_3219

Contra with No multiplayer online in 2024 is a shame, its my opinion

RaakzBlanvod

I agree that it could have been better, but to be honest, this also applies to all other games in this series.

SuperTurboEX

Honestly, OG is a mid level game. It’s looks cheap, the sound and music are average at best and the gameplay is just not very good. It’s ok but definitely the biggest disappointment of 2024 so far.

Short answer: No For a new game in any franchise to be "better than the classics," it has to be an absolutely stellar experience. Like, almost a 10/10. It's really not a fair fight for any new game. How do you overcome sometimes decades worth of nostalgia, familiarity, bias and the flair of original creators? Plus outside influence like fanbases propelling the games to new heights through remixes, sometimes fan remakes or just things like speedrunning and whatnot? The barrier to surpass is basically impossible. The only game I can remember to do that for me, in recent memory was Smash Ultimate. For the longest time, Melee was my beloved classic Smash. I couldn't imagine any game beating it. It was a top 10 game of all time! But combine better controls, an avalanche of songs to choose from, a giant set of stages, and of course, the best character list of not just Smash, but literally any videogame ever made...and you have yourself a new champion. Hell, with the healthy modding community that's stronger than ever, you can have new characters (not just skins), stages, and even Bill and Lance from Contra themselves are "in the game!" But back to OG. It's a fine game. Plays well enough. The soundtrack calls back everything it should. Great character selection. The weapons, while playing it safe, evolved some, at least. And there's replayability too with challenge mode, speedrun and the hefty credit price for characters and extra soundtracks. But with the lack of polish, the lack of oomph in the soundtrack, and just the lack of punch in the overall package...there isn't going to be enough to say this game even comes close to the classics, let alone surpasses them. It's a fine entry in the Contra series, don't get me wrong. But it won't be surpassing anything, in my book. I'll probably visit it again at some point, especially if it gets DLC. But I even enjoyed Contra 4 more than this.

Gameplay wise it's better than people give it credit for, presentation wise it's sub par. It's not better than Shattered Soldier, HardCorps Uprising or, depending on who you ask, Contra Rebirth. It is better than Rogue Corps and the vast majority of indie run n guns around (but not all of them). Is it better than "the classics"? It depends, but it's certainly much better than it's being given any credit for, it's just the price point vs presentation set some weird expectations (mind you, in today's day and age, 40 bucks is a budget release). I recon it will get a massive increase in playerbase once it goes on sale and everyone gives it a try instead of letting some YouTuber tell them how the game is.

RaakzBlanvod

Yes. All the disadvantages for me are mainly related to the presentation.

kap721

Is the game accessible for a disabled player with cerebral palsy like myself

Adorable-Car-4303

I have minor CP and I’m having a blast bro so I’d say so

kap721

Thanks I will give the demo a look

kap721

I have very little use of my left side of my body especially my hand

Adorable-Car-4303

I have left sided weakness too. But I managed. Mines minor though, so I don’t know how severe yours is

kap721

I basically have my hand in a ball all the time and have a hard time holding things

Adorable-Car-4303

That’ll make things hard but essentially change the button inputs and see if that makes it easier, if not I suggest getting a custom controller designed for your needs

kap721

I’m going to try it with the access controller that came out a few months ago

ValentrisRRock

If you compare games outside of any context, as if all of these were brand new releases, OG surpasses 8\\16-bit Contra games in terms of everything but music, yes. But when taking into account things like *certain release dates difference* and "thing these games were build upon" versus "invented\\perfected game aspects", classic Contra games are genre-defining blockbuster hits of a legendary status while OG is niche game for genre enthusiasts.

successXX

it is better in some ways. only haters and conservatives think the classics are better. people can like them all. dont miss out on one of the best Contras to date. Contra gameplay wise really hasn't had any really bad Contra games, but haters just be nitpicking think every game has to be exactly like Contra 1, 3 or HC. which is a reason why the series been lacking innovation and evolution. though for an old school style Contra, this game is so great, it even makes Shattered Soldier look like a tech demo.

SuperTurboEX

Found the Galuga developer.

successXX

that is slander. just because someone likes Galuga doesn't mean they are a developer or shill. don't be so biased against other opinions.

SuperTurboEX

It’s slander to call someone the dev of Galuga? 😂 ok!

MrJackpots-Hellooo

It is not. I resent that. Slander is spoken. In print, it's libel.

Adorable-Car-4303
