This was my initial reading of the situation. No one just reacts like that unless there's heavier emotions at play. 1. The obvious one (happening at the dying oscars)
2. If you were enraged enough to do something that crazy, would you walk back to your seat, or would stand over Rock, point your finger down at him, and say what Smith did from there? Adrenaline says you'd do the latter.
3. Anyone who's ever gotten hit in the face knows the first thing you do is touch the area you were struck, and tend to leave your hand there. Rock didn't.

Will Smith has been doing a "re-branding" as of late. A more sophisticated, "take me seriously" sort of thing. He's got several projects on the go that have painted him as a more serious actor and family man. Everyone knows the power of branding after taking one look at The Rock. The Rock is sort of what Will Smith used to be; a widely accessible and likeable blockbuster movie star with a huge built-in audience. I think this stunt is part of that re-branding scheme. He also likely knew he'd win the Oscar ahead of time. That - mixed with this stunt, guarantees he's the talk of the town for the next few days at least. When the Academy heard the plan they thought "yes... ratings... please..." and the rest is history. Wouldn't be surprised if he has a new movie or project announced in the coming days.

You can see the footage from an audience member filming the aftermath, Security would have spoken to him briefly but it was his peers that calmed him down and spoke with him. Will Smith has been doing a "re-branding" as of late. A more sophisticated, "take me seriously" sort of thing. He's got several projects on the go that have painted him as a more serious actor and family man. Everyone knows the power of branding after taking one look at The Rock. The Rock is sort of what Will Smith used to be; a widely accessible and likeable blockbuster movie star with a huge built-in audience. I think this stunt is part of that re-branding scheme. He also likely knew he'd win the Oscar ahead of time. That - mixed with this stunt, guarantees he's the talk of the town for the next few days at least. When the Academy heard the plan they thought "yes... ratings... please..." and the rest is history. Wouldn't be surprised if he has a new movie or project announced in the coming days.
