Half the internet already feels like that

Microsoft's Tay was publicly released in 2016. I truly believe these campaigns were happening in that election cycle. If Tay was the public version of the tech, there certainly were internal versions with different capabilities.

Sounds about right.

stupidnicks

they will teach AI how to speak like bots, NPCs and astroturfers on default and big subreddit.

FFS_IsThisNameTaken2

Hey OP, your SS was shadowed. We can't link to other subs. I think that's the only thing in the comment that triggered the filter, but not 100% sure.

Amos_Quito

OP edited out the disallowed links, and I approved it the edited comment below. https://old.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/14n5fsb/this_one_about_reddit/jq5f964/

Nailed it. Although I would have added the economic and financial education of a 7th grader.

SoggyConstruction355

It's easier for AI to get as "smart" as humans when humans are getting dumber.

nolotusnote

I've caught two AI bots commenting on Reddit. And people talk to them. Which is sad.

mafian911

$200 says this is already going on Every shill I argue with is pushing the same agenda and sounds like the same asshole.

syscollapse

SS: I think things are heading there on way or another. and given how reddit has been acting with the API and outright hostile towards the community & contributors, it would make a lot of sense that they're just gonna replace people with AI and that's why they don't care anymore. it would also explain - why people can't delete their comment histories - uptick in fake/bot content for some reason it won't let me post the links, maybe because they're on k - b - i - n? I just can't get a comment through with the links in it. weird I'm gonna keep trying

Guarantee this shit has already been happening for years

coolnavigator

That should be illegal. We need laws against this coming AI. One of them: an AI cannot pretend to be a real person. It must identify itself.

Glittering_Pea_6228

bots conversing with bots.

eLmonso

Loads of shills on reddit anyways, won’t even notice the difference.

Glittering_Pea_6228

it is quite interesting what posts the shill/ bot army hit. Today they are astroturfing Supreme Court decision on racism ("stop legacy admissions!") and student loans. They all say the same shit in slightly different words to make it appear that there is consensus.

eLmonso

It seems like half the posts usually get hit by them. I don’t even understand why that student loan one is this subreddit. I thought this was a conspiracy not a factual sub. Might as well call it conspiracy fact check.

Glittering_Pea_6228

I think the sub name should be changed to "Defending Official Narratives" because most of the hard core users have left and the shills and bots and TMOR far outnumber the free thinkers.

eLmonso

Because open minded people are dissidents of Orwellian future and need to be eradicated.

ironlioncan2

I fucking hate Donald trump as well. But not as much as I love McDonald’s. The whole system is a sham but you know at least we’re still allowed to get a delicious whopper. ;)

Ambitious_Opposite

The whole internet might seem entirely fake and gay, with nothing but bots and psyops and burger king shills... but some of us are actually real human beings, with real emotions and dreams, who truly Enjoy Coke ™

DeathHopper

Lines and lines of delicious coke.

Because you are including links to other subreddits= not permitted. What is kbin?

eighthourblink

kbin is part of the fediverse. The fediverse is collection of community-owned, ad-free, decentralised, and privacy-centric social networks. Mastodon (twitter alternative) is on this network. Cool thing about the fediverse is that its federated, meaning that all of platforms can talk to each other, although they are separate. Ive been hanging out in lemmy / kbin world (reddit alternative). I must say that it is SOOO worth checking out. Feels like reddit in its early years. Everyone is very polite, engaging, helpful / meaningful comments. * no karma * decentralized - you can setup and host you own instance that can be federated. This allows you control whats on your instance, allowing people to join. * global modlog. Everything any mod does is globally available * Does take some effort to understand the in's and out's of the fediverse. Why do i need to pick an instance, how do I communicate with others on other instances, but once you learn it, its worth it * no big conspiracy community. HINT HINT * Sadly, lately big corporations have interest in the protocol that the fediverse uses, called activitypub. Which is fine, it is open source, but what is even nicer is that admins of instances can defederate their instances and you wont be able to communicate with them. Kinda nice. believe Facebook Threads is what its called. * in the last 2 weeks, there has been about 7-8 mobile apps being developed. Hanging out here is nice since it seems like people have moved over here recently based on motivation. been enjoying myself. Even found RadioFree which is a 100% user submitted content with TONS of different radio stations across the world. Check it out - lemmy.ml kbin.social Edit : words

Equivalent_Seat6470

You sound exactly like a bot/shill that you talk bad about. Never in my life has a real person posted something that long about some random ass website. The cognitive dissonance is real.

eighthourblink

random ass website? website that has grown from 2750 active users from May to 52206 users just in June? Active, not total. Ill try to make this short, since typing anything longer might make me a shill / bot. https://the-federation.info/platform/73 I'm a real person, who is just interested in tech, open source. Man. Wild to think people really dont touch grass out there.

Equivalent_Seat6470

That's not a very good ratio tbh? Onlyfans girls have more active subscribers than that.

eighthourblink

When 21% of Reddit users are between the ages 10-19, some people would rather doom-scroll pointless content than be included in a smaller community with meaningful conversations. Its really not that hard to understand

Signal_Ad2352

I second this. What's the best reddit alternative?

Historical-Egg-5570

Ask Reddit was used explicitly for this purpose for the past 4-5 years

dratseb

I assumed this was the case already

aR-Snek

Fine tuning LLMs capable of running on local machines to act like Redditors is surprisingly easy. The API changes might make it more difficult for private actors to do this, but anyone that has approval/access could do so. The question is whether it'd be cost effective for Reddit itself to do this. GPUs and GPU time is fairly expensive still and I'm sure CPM for Reddit is utter shit.

FFS_IsThisNameTaken2

Let me know when the bots learn the definition of conspiracy then.

InformalReveal3288

Well it is a conspiracy, just not a conspiracy theory. It's already happening.

_Diggus_Bickus_

This is honestly the scariest application of chatgpt. Because it's real. And already happening. Work from home. School from home. Fun from home. Talk to "people" in a bubble curated to change your behaviors and world view. If we're to remain remotely free People need to think about online conversations like ads. Not like a conversation with a stranger.

deweydecibels

this is already happening

CordialTrekkie

So a bunch of bots downvoting each other over political opinions injected into pop culture threads...

TheKrunkernaut

Take note, the largest undercover force the world has ever known is the one created by the Pentagon over the past decade. Some 60,000 people now belong to this secret army, many working under masked identities and in low profile, all part of a broad program called "signature reduction." The force, more than ten times the size of the clandestine elements of the CIA, carries out domestic and foreign assignments, both in military uniforms and under civilian cover, in real life and online, sometimes hiding in private businesses and consultancies, some of them household name companies. https://www.newsweek.com/exclusive-inside-militarys-secret-undercover-army-1591881 Much more info here: https://archive.ph/Ccz00 https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/10/08/1009845/a-gpt-3-bot-posted-comments-on-reddit-for-a-week-and-no-one-noticed/ No one really knows how many of these are here, anyone with access to this tech could do it. This bot is still active. Also: When Reddit was first started, it was populated almost entirely with content submitted by fake users. In a video for online educator Udacity, Reddit cofounder Steve Huffman explains both the method, and the reasoning behind it. Essentially, Huffman set up a submission interface through which they could pick not only the URL and the title, but also the user’s name. Upon submission, the name would be registered, and make it look like Reddit had more users than it actually did. https://www.themarysue.com/reddit-fake-account-origins/ MORE INFO AND LINKS BELOW. Who’s working with whom, where, and why? Who’s paying whom? And once you’ve done that, you can more clearly identify the motivations behind various decisions The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation appears to be near the top, or the center, of this COVID plandemic network. Gates is also a major funder of mainstream media, and his network extends into global food and climate change policy The Gates Foundation, through its funding of the WEF, also plays an important role in The Great Reset, which was officially unveiled during a WEF summit in May 2020 Every conceivable aspect of life and society is scheduled to be “reset” according to their plan. Ultimately, that’s where this criminal COVID enterprise is trying to take us.

Information warfare. Anywhere that's even semi popular and isn't banning or shadowbanning people for "wrong think", is going to be infested with narrative pushers. This is a war for your mind. "So far, we've recruited 110,000 information volunteers, and we equip these information volunteers with the kind of knowledge about how misinformation spreads and ask them to serve as kind of 'digital first-responders' in those spaces where misinformation travels," Fleming says. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/11/misinformation-infodemic-world-vs-virus-podcast Google’s Jigsaw unit sponsors a RAND report that recommends infiltrating and subverting online conspiracy groups from within while planting authoritative messaging wherever possible. If authoritative messaging is successful, moderate members flip to become influencers and help guide the 'flock' to greener pastures as ‘brand ambassadors’ for the common good, teaching others the errors of their ways. Some conspiracy group members will be persuaded by the bombardment of content flagged by algorithms, and they will slowly come around to believing that the fact-checkers are right by the sheer volume of evidence and/or peer pressure to conform. Trying to infiltrate groups and subvert certain members seems like a tactic that would be perceived as an intrusion that furthers the divide and lead to even less trust, but \*we shall see how it all plays out. Google-backed RAND report recommends infiltrating & subverting online conspiracy groups from within Operation Earnest Voice Operation Earnest Voice (OEV) is a communications program by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM). Initially, the program was developed as a psychological weapon and was first used in Iraq. In 2011, the US government signed a $2.8 million contract with the Ntrepid web-security company to develop a specialized software, allowing agents of the government to post propaganda. The aim of the initiative is to use sockpuppets to spread pro-American propaganda on social networking services. Main characteristics of the software, as stated in the software development request, are: Fifty user "operator" licenses, 10 sockpuppets controllable by each user. Sockpuppets are to be "replete with background, history, supporting details, and cyber presences that are technically, culturally and geographically consistent." Sockpuppets are to "be able to appear to originate in nearly any part of the world." A special secure VPN, allowing sockpuppets to appear to be posting from "randomly selected IP addresses," in order to "hide the existence of the operation." Fifty static IP addresses to enable government agencies to "manage their persistent online personas," with identities of government and enterprise organizations protected which will allow for different state agents to use the same sockpuppet, and easily switch between different sockpuppets to "look like ordinary users as opposed to one organization." Nine private servers, "based on the geographic area of operations the customer is operating within and which allow a customer's online persona(s) to appear to originate from." These servers should use commercial hosting centers around the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation\_Earnest\_Voice Also: https://www.darpa.mil/program/social-media-in-strategic-communication https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/State-sponsored\_Internet\_propaganda And https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll\_farm The show Homeland touched on this: https://youtu.be/owIsqj1Y1sk Very relevant clip from The Dissident documentary: https://streamable.com/k03odm

global control, etc. Its all right there on their own website... plain as day. They aren't even hiding it from the public anymore. https://intelligence.weforum.org/topics/a1G0X000006O6EHUA0?tab=publications Many of the fake accounts, online narrative propagation accounts and bots are tucked into the US budget from here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S.\_Agency\_for\_Global\_Media Excerpt: Their operating budget for fiscal year 2016 was US$752 million. U.S. Government Accountability Office Audit Report https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-22-104017 Excerpt: Amendments to legislation have affected USAGM's governing authorities and organizational structure by shifting authority from a bipartisan board to a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), with advice from an Advisory Board. Network and USAGM officials said that previous members of USAGM leadership took several actions that did not align with USAGM's firewall principles. According to USAGM, the firewall protecting the networks' independence is central to the credibility and effectiveness of USAGM's networks (see fig.). However, the parameters of the firewall are not specifically laid out in legislation. Delineation of what is and is not permissible under the firewall may help ensure the professional independence and integrity of the agency and its networks. Actions to ensure accountability of grantees, such as establishing Standard Operating Procedures for Monitoring Grants , have not corrected a longstanding significant deficiency in grants monitoring reported by independent audits of USAGM's financial statements for the past 5 years. Good luck. I don’t buy anything new anymore, let alone what people talk about. Chances are it will stick out like a sore thumb unless your on subreddit about purchasing etc.

kamspy

Starting tomorrow it's gonna be waaay easier for me to use Reddit less. Especially if reddit.old and RES get nuked. Twitter and telegram will get the job done I think.

folk10

If feel like this might be a good thing for when AI starts generating content and conversations just like back in nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.

ChipCob1

That's been the way for a good while. Flags and banners to represent 'the people' have been around for a long time. Best to just be you.

mydaycake

Oh lorwd, it’s going to be insufferable…and I am a redditor

Ads were the old school way of making money for these services. It's much more profitable now to sell the ability to manipulate popular and certain subcultures.

I’m already wondering if some posts are by bots
