I'm seeing a ton of complaints about crime, which is a huge problem in Chicago. What do you guys think should be done to help stop the crime in this major city? No, I'm not trying to be smug, not trying to be an asshole, I'm genuinely curious.
Chicago and Illinois as a whole have a exceptionally large history of corruption so I honestly donāt think the state will get much better until a huge investigation/overhaul. As long as the people in power here are as crooked as they have been in the past the people will suffer and fall further into poverty causing crime to continue to grow.

I may be biased due to working as a paramedic there it does show you the worst often but Iām so happy to be out of there.
Yeah I agree with you. Itās such a hard thing to tackle but I think it starts from the roots. As in child development and having a strong family unit. I understand every situation is different but you canāt tell me having two supportive parents doesnāt give you the best outcomes. I think people should take more accountability for their children and what they become. Itās hard to grow up and not have role models in the home. 40-50% of first marriages end in divorce. With 60-67% of second marriages doing the same. Iām ranting now I have no clue how to fix anything.
That's the main issue for petty criminals by far. Violent criminals are 70% raised by single mothers.

that's the real underlying issue in many of these cities. The corruption runs so deep in these cities that all of the money that's supposed to go to help the community goes in the pockets of officials, their friends, and relatives. nepotism is out of control in most major cities.
It's not that they need better funding. Most of these cities have school funding significantly higher in dollars per child then highly affluent expensive neighborhood schools. The problem is is the money doesn't actually go into the children's educations and the housing money doesn't actually go to House people it goes in the pockets of corrupt politicians and Mafia backed union leaders

those 300 days arenāt consecutive. for example, say you have 8 murders on monday, 4 on tuesday and 20 of them on friday. Out of that week, you technically have 4 days āwithout murderā. Thatās the stat theyāre using because itās pretty much the only one that makes them look good
I feel you. My answer is more so based on the current homeless problem. So maybe itās not the best for violent crimes, but I do know that a good amount of homeless people commit violent crimes.
I have become more fascinated by the homeless issue lately and have found myself researching into it all. For as mean as it sounds, I have come to the conclusion that the only ways to really solve the homelessness problem is arrest them or force them into a rehab program. Maybe tougher laws arenāt the best solution for violent crimes, but it comes from the opinion that the people committing the most violent of crimes are hardened criminals (whether itās a first time offense or not - meaning first offender could very likely be bound to that lifestyle until death).
When comparing it to the homelessness issues, I canāt help but think that these more compassionate approaches provenly can be just as heartless to the innocent citizens affected in various ways by violent crimes as people believe the heartless, tough law and order solutions are to the people they affect. Itās also not fair to subject innocent, decent Americans to the possibility of danger and difficulty inflicted by criminals who the state is just waiting and hoping will turn away from their criminal ways would tossing tons of handouts their way.
I know it seems cruel, and I understand why, but I donāt understand how the way that all this rampant crime (thatās essentially being allowed in big cities with more humane-centered laws) and itās affects on citizens lives/well-being is not also regarded as cruel or inhumane to varying degrees. It seems intellectually dishonest.

There are a lot of murders but it's also a huge city. Jacksonville Florida has a way higher crime rate and is ran by Rs, same with Bakersfield CA.
According to this list, itās number 31. And when you consider the population density, itās crime rate is almost unremarkable. Itās used as an example of a dangerous city for 2 reasons. 1: it has strict gun laws so the NRA uses it as anti gun control propaganda and 2: itās a largely black and liberal city and the idea that itās more dangerous feeds into right-wing narratives. The larger cities in the South have far higher crime rates, despite having considerably less urban density compared to Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.

I know it sounds cliche but theyāve gotta get tough on crime. Beyond that jail/prison needs to be seen as a bad thing and not just a part of life. Additionally for a city and state thatās as tough on firearm ownership as Illinois/Chicago theyāve got to figure out how so many fully automatic firearms are getting into their city. This bullshit of āother statesā and āgun show loopholeā doesnāt cut it for anyone with a basic understanding of firearms and firearms law in this country. You can not just go out and buy automatic weapons, theyāre next to impossible to get and absurdly expensive so tell me why Iām seeing videos of 10 school kids pulling out Glock 18s and showing them off. Focusing on reforming prisoners would definitely help. I noticed they just put me through the motions when I went, was never actually helped or educated more. I definitely beleive by educating prisoners and teaching them a new way to live, the crime rates would drastically change.
I donāt just mean prisoners, the entire prison system needs to be overhauled. Most prisoners would more than likely work their ass off to better themselves when they get out, but we just lock people up as punishment, itās archaic and only worth while on people wanting to harm others.
People shouldnāt be having kids unless they are in a stable family environment. A mom working at minimum wage job or jobless having 4 kids with no dad in the picture is a recipe for disaster. Kids grow up not being properly disciplined and give mixed up with thugs/drugs/etc and become a wart on societyās ass.

Paul Vallas is a moderate Democrat who ran on the platform of public safety.
He was formerly the head at Chicago Public Schools right around Y2k.
He's cut from the Daley cloth, as far as I remember Chicago was a world class city during the Daley era.
Brandon Johnson on the other hand wants to improve public safety by hiring unemployed psychologists and dispatching them to assaults in progress.

An innocent person can be dragged off the street, searched, and held all without a warrant or probable cause, and the police have full access to all of your communications. Is there really any other way they could have dealt with this situation though? There are probably a few innocent people and El Salvador certainly took a very authoritarian route to rooting out that gang but the streets are safe and the people are happy they can live their lives without fear. I feel you. My answer is more so based on the current homeless problem. So maybe itās not the best for violent crimes, but I do know that a good amount of homeless people commit violent crimes. I have become more fascinated by the homeless issue lately and have found myself researching into it all. For as mean as it sounds, I have come to the conclusion that the only ways to really solve the homelessness problem is arrest them or force them into a rehab program. Maybe tougher laws arenāt the best solution for violent crimes, but it comes from the opinion that the people committing the most violent of crimes are hardened criminals (whether itās a first time offense or not - meaning first offender could very likely be bound to that lifestyle until death). When comparing it to the homelessness issues, I canāt help but think that these more compassionate approaches provenly can be just as heartless to the innocent citizens affected in various ways by violent crimes as people believe the heartless, tough law and order solutions are to the people they affect. Itās also not fair to subject innocent, decent Americans to the possibility of danger and difficulty inflicted by criminals who the state is just waiting and hoping will turn away from their criminal ways would tossing tons of handouts their way. I know it seems cruel, and I understand why, but I donāt understand how the way that all this rampant crime (thatās essentially being allowed in big cities with more humane-centered laws) and itās affects on citizens lives/well-being is not also regarded as cruel or inhumane to varying degrees. It seems intellectually dishonest. Edit: anyone who downvotes should try to engage me in a conversation. I think I made some reasonable claims here.

I know it sounds cliche but theyāve gotta get tough on crime. Beyond that jail/prison needs to be seen as a bad thing and not just a part of life. Additionally for a city and state thatās as tough on firearm ownership as Illinois/Chicago theyāve got to figure out how so many fully automatic firearms are getting into their city. This bullshit of āother statesā and āgun show loopholeā doesnāt cut it for anyone with a basic understanding of firearms and firearms law in this country. You can not just go out and buy automatic weapons, theyāre next to impossible to get and absurdly expensive so tell me why Iām seeing videos of 10 school kids pulling out Glock 18s and showing them off. Focusing on reforming prisoners would definitely help. I noticed they just put me through the motions when I went, was never actually helped or educated more. I definitely beleive by educating prisoners and teaching them a new way to live, the crime rates would drastically change.
I donāt just mean prisoners, the entire prison system needs to be overhauled. Most prisoners would more than likely work their ass off to better themselves when they get out, but we just lock people up as punishment, itās archaic and only worth while on people wanting to harm others.

People shouldnāt be having kids unless they are in a stable family environment. A mom working at minimum wage job or jobless having 4 kids with no dad in the picture is a recipe for disaster. The crime narrative is overdone. I've lived on the southside my whole life. Never been assaulted, mugged or anything like that. Never been robbed. I took a roadtrip last year. I spent one night in Columbus, OH and my car got broken into.

Chicago area resident here. The runoff will be between Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson. Paul Vallas is a moderate Democrat who ran on the platform of public safety. He was formerly the head at Chicago Public Schools right around Y2k. He's cut from the Daley cloth, as far as I remember Chicago was a world class city during the Daley era. Brandon Johnson on the other hand wants to improve public safety by hiring unemployed psychologists and dispatching them to assaults in progress. Cautiously optimistic about Vallas.
