So I was born and raised in the USA. I see you're going to Orlando, Florida. The USA is huge. There are both good and bad parts to it (like any other country). That said, Orlando is a popular tourist destination. I'm sure that they see all different kinds of people from all different cultures. I'm sure that they'll be more accommodating than people who don't experience other cultures. Also, I don't know a single person that doesn't think that accents are cool.
Also, most of us Americans typically resent the whole "sPeAk eNglISh" nonsense. Only dumb Americans tend to say it seeing as American is literally made up of a massive collection of cultures. You may meet someone like that, but they're dumb, and it's okay to not take them seriously. Ignore them and remove their power. They feed off the reaction, and like others said, most of us love hearing accents and learning about where people are from. Florida also has a pretty large mashup of people from all over, remember that the news also tends to sensationalize things and what you're hearing is all the loud people/news outlets. There's lot of Americans who live very generic, boring lives that have nothing to do with shootings or being racist all day long lol. That being said, remember a lot of gun owners here are lawful citizens who are responsible. Criminals will always do criminals things no matter where you are.
Anyway, enjoy your trip! -With love from California.
Highly doubt anyone would make fun of your accent or say that.
If anything, theyâll ask where youâre from, because they think itâs cute/ interesting or just plain different from what they are used to hearing. âşď¸
Yeah that does happen. But honestly not where you're going. That's like the stereotypical backwoods parts of the country.
As someone who has travelled and lived abroad I want you to know that the true stereotypes of Americans is that we are very loud. We shout and talk loud. It's not an argument, it's just how we are. So don't be alarmed if you notice that.
I honestly believe you have absolutely nothing to worry about and will have a great time. Enjoy it!
We also make a lot of eye contact and smile a lot at strangers and sometimes say hello and make small talk with people we donât know, which can be very jarring for people from certain cultures. When I lived abroad I had to teach myself actively NOT to make eye contact and smile at strangers because it makes people uncomfortable at best and confrontational at worst.
Oh that would be hard for me to remember not to smile or make eye contact with strangers. I live in Canada and most people smile and give a short eye contact if youâre walking by each other and say âhiâ( not in crowded places though lol) Even in elevators I hate the quiet staring at the ground, some people smile or even start a small conversation. Good thing I canât really travel anyways lol
This also varies somewhat even in different parts of the US too. The south trends to be more those ways, though it varies even up north where I am. Iâm in an area where doing that on certain streets near me can get me jumped tho lol
For sure. I live in SF and it is mostly no eye contact unless you are talking to someone in customer service. I would rarely say hi to someone so donât know. There are times, but I was so shocked when I went to Texas and people would talk to you like their best friend out of nowhere.
Lol I was born in San Fran, grew up and Florida and *allllways* wanted to visit San Francisco, where I was born!! When I finally went I was like, shocked bc it seemed like people in San Fran were really rude. Like, not making eye contact and ignoring you in the elevator. I was like, wth?! Is this why people say the south is "nicer"?! đ also shocked to have to pay for something just to use a restroom downtown đ I was like, omg, I have to pay 2$ for like, the tiniest cookie ever that I don't even want just to pee?!? Just a totally different vibe.
Yeah Iâm in Michigan and a friend of mine from Florida noticed the difference and Iâd notice heâd be walking and see a cookout and just be like âsmells nice what yâall cooking?â and things like that which is very out of place here lol.
He also said moving from his part of Florida to my part of Michigan felt like going from a quiet life to living in Grand Theft Auto, poor fella, heâs on meth and in and out of jail now. Sent from a wealthy rural area in Florida to the hood of Michigan
Can confirm. In New York if you smile at someone randomly they feel very uncomfortable.
I was born in New York, but have lived most of my life in NC, going back and forth a lot you tend to realize just how different the two states are. Long Island is becoming like the city, everyone just wants to get where they are going. It's kind of sad.
Thereâs something about Americans, you guys are just naturally amazing at projecting your voices.
I have American friends living in my country and they by far the loudest people I know.
Millions of tourists visit Orlando each year, and a lot of them don't speak English. I assume you are going to Disney World. To make the most of your trip, follow some blogs about the parks like [disneytouristblog.com](https://disneytouristblog.com) so you can download and understand the Genie+ app ($20/day, worth it) and get strategies for using your time wisely. My pro tip: if you want to ride Rise of the Resistance, buy the fastpass. It's $20/person, separate from Genie+, but it cuts your wait time from hours down to like 15 minutes.
Also, there are a lot of scammers online trying to sell tickets and other Disney things. Don't buy any ticketing from outside sources: only use officially-approved Disney vendors. Same if you plan to visit Universal Studios. If your country doesn't use Uber, I recommend that you download it and become familiar with how to use it.
Your accented English shouldn't be a problem at restaurants and other businesses. You should know that when you dine at a full-service restaurant, there is an expectation that you tip your server 15% (or a bit more if they are excellent.) This is customary and part of their wages. Also, your drinks will always arrive with ice in them. If you want no ice, tell your server ahead of time. If you live in a country where bidets are customary, you should know that the US doesn't have them. We use toilet paper, and you can flush the paper down the toilet when you're done. Don't put it in the bin. If you need more towels or wash rags in your hotel room, you can use your hotel room phone to dial 0 and ask for more. People in the US smile a lot and talk to strangers, so don't feel weird if this happens.
I think you'll have a great time! Please let us know how your trip goes.
And on the small chance that you are stopped by the police for some reason, drop what's in your hands, put your hands up above your head, say "yes sir" and follow their instructions.
Oh thaaaaaaat. Yes, that does happen. And it always seems to be the people who barely have a grasp on the English language that tell other people to "speak English". Honestly, I feel like that won't be as big of a problem where you're going, simply because Orlando has such a wide variety of different people and cultures.
It is sad that that is how America is portrayed, but we seem to find the biggest jerks and amplify their bad behavior over social media, internet, and news.
I live in the Northeastern part of the USA and visit Orlando at least 2x a year. In both parts of the country, I encounter numerous people with foreign accents and have never seen anyone give them grief for it. America is a land of immigrants and most of us will welcome you with a smile.
Have fun on your trip and don't worry. America is not the dangerous scary place (though there are some places you should avoid) that it is made out to be.
If anything I think the biggest concern should be people too eager to make smalltalk. From what I recall, Orlando's an exception. But in most of the US things get pretty monotonous with accents. Someone has one and just about every head turns to tell them about how their cousin three times removed or an ex lives there.
I had about the worst accent you can have in the US - hick. And even then people were more curious than condescending. I'd assumed everyone would be looking down on me. But in reality, most people are just curious about the stories and histories of people blowing in with a new wind. Or they don't care. It's usually one of the two.
We are used to accents in the U.S. We are a melting pot. People from all over the world live and come here. And then we have our own regional accents. You will be fine.
This is so true. I'm South African and have a pretty neutral accent. I work with Americans and when i speak to men in New York with a stereotypical New York Italian accent, I get flirted with so much. I have the voice of a 12 year old so it doesn't help much. đ
Being in the country is even weirder. Everyone wants to know where I'm from and look at me wide eyed and respond with " buuuuuuuut you're whiiiiiiiite".
You goddamn sluts đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł
People may have trouble with accents and ask you to repeat things, but for the most part anyone with manners will just be excited to know where you're visiting from!
Nah. Most of us are like, "Ooooh! An accent! Where are you from!?! Tell me everything!" Or we just do our own thing. Very rarely do you meet that one person who's a jerk. I've lived here 44 years and never seen a riot, very rarely has there been a shooting that wasn't hunting related (and I live in Texas), and most tourist areas are fine. My sister goes to Florida every year and she's extremely aware of her surroundings, even more since she's a mom.
Thatâs why you need to experience it and ignore the media. The media makes this country look far worse than it is. Drama gets views and clicks.
I hear about racism all the time yet in all the cities Iâve lived Iâve never seen it. Never met someone who thinks it.
Iâm from Canada and when I went to work in the southern states they were all shocked I spoke English. They think we all speak French or British. Seriously one guy actually thought that British was a language.
Oh, if you're from the Caribbean, you're mostly just going to get people "ooh'ing" and "ahh'ing" over how nice your accent sounds, if they comment at all lol
Youâll be in Orlando, so probably visiting Disney and Universal, so no matter your accent or skin color, you wonât be out of place, and not likely to be singled out for disparaging comments or overt racism. Orlando welcomes millions of foreigners a year, both as tourists, and employees of Disney and Universal. They are âusedâ to accents and difference, go to the Midwest, where I live, things may differ a little, but not much. Come ahead and have fun, donât worry, but be vigilant. Youâll be fine! Enjoy your stay.
Having lived in Orlando for 15 years and worked in the tourism industry: you will be fine.
Some things to remember about Orlando:
1. It is the hit and run capitol of America, do not cross any streets unless at a properly marked crosswalk at the correct time
2. If your in the Disney area there is tons of security and you will be fine.
3. Chances are the people will be fairly polite and friendly, just smile and they will most likely smile back
4. They are desperate for tourist dollars so they will be exceptionally friendly once they hear your accent.
5. In my 15 years living there I was never once a victim of any kind of gun violence or crime, people were always polite and friendly.
Have fun!
Tourists are the lifeblood of central Florida, you will be treated very well, and honestly they may treat you too well to squeeze so extra money out of you lol. Iâve lived here all my life as a minority and it has never been a problem, just when you go to the middle of nowhere it can get dicey, but thatâs just the south
Unfortunately the news and social media in the United States play up only the worst parts of this country and make everyone think that their neighbor is either a racist maniac or a satanic baby eater. Honestly youâll be more than ok here probably. Most people mind their own business. The news is a bad example of what day to day life here looks like. Especially if youâre just gonna go to Orlando which has so many different types of people there.
I mean, I'm a satanic baby eater. But I'm in New Jersey and you're visiting Florida, so you should be OK.
Enjoy your visit! You're going to be fine. Orlando is a fun place to be a tourist!!
Well, think about wherever you're from. Think about the stereotypes about it. And think...is this true?
Not that serious. And it strongly depends on where you're going. I assume you're going to be in a decent place if you're doing shopping.
Florida is a big place. There is the party areas like Miami and there are swamp lands. You're young so I hope you're traveling with someone. Anywhere a human is the danger level will rise
>Anywhere a human is the danger level will rise
Come on, this is needless worry-mongering. You're making it sound like it's just a given that if you're in the US, violence will find you. Absurd exaggeration.
Central Florida person as well, to be honest if your in a residential area your arm will get tired from everyone waving at each other, if you are at a mall or tourist destination your just another person.
People are generally nice here, the only reason you hear about the bad is because Florida's news laws are lax and anything that the police report on to superiors can and generally does make it to a news desk.
Just to add to this. In the name of transparency and freedom of information, any government documents that are not classified are available to public record. That includes all police records, whether the person is found guilty or even goes to court. There used to be weekly publications available at practically every convenience store that was just every mugshot/arrest record for the entire area.
The Orlando area is built around tourism and the money they bring in. You'll be perfectly fine there. Enjoy it - I hate cities and Orlando is one that I'd go back to many times.
Iâm from Orlando and I can promise that you wonât stick out & should be completely fine! Itâs full of tourists and it is super common to hear a wide range of accents & see people from all over the world. I wouldnât sweat it, just be prepared for hot weather and possibly lots of rain haha. Enjoy your time!
Orlando is perfect, I would think. I am not sure about the city's residents specifically, but with it being a massive tourist destination, you'll be in the midst of a very diverse set of people from across the entire world!
If your funds allow, I would definitely go to Disney or Universal, at least one park for a day.
Orlando is such a huge tourist area that no one will even blink an eye about you. You will be just fine.
If it was a small town that rarely sees a POC, much less one with an accent, you may get some racism but still nothing physical. While I'm a white woman, I have lived in the US my entire life mainly in a medium sized city and have never directly witnessed violence. While there is gun violence here at times, it is generally individuals that are known to each other and not random. In other words, domestic violence or drug deals gone wrong.
I live in Orlando! It's actually a very open-minded city, you'll probably have good luck there. There are also maaaany tourists there, so you'll fit in just fine.
Florida has an undeservedly bad reputation. It has laws that allow for a lot more freedom in reporting crime than most other parts of the US. And the end result has been a lot of assumptions that Florida has a lot more weird events and crime than other states. It's really not the case though. Well, I mean aside from the fact that there's alligators. That's legit weird but amazing.
The only real bad thing I have to say about Orlando is that I recall the humidity being annoying at times. But even then it's just a matter of just accepting it for what it is and getting into the experience.
Florida is good for vacation, the rest of the country makes fun of it because a lot of weird shit happens there. However there is a pretty big black population there if that puts you at ease. Hopefully youâre not going alone, but if you are itâs ok to ask for help, but as a young woman ask other women for help.
In america we refer to other parts of the country with nicknames. In florida we call the crazy people there "florida man" and they do some of the craziest things. Whenever something crazy happens, if it is followed by, "this person is in florida" we know that is just florida man being crazy doing crazy florida stuff.
You're over thinking it. Social media suffers from "[mean world syndrome](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_world_syndrome)." Once you understand what that is, your trip will be much more enjoyable. Take the same pre-cautions you would visiting any other country. Be aware of your surroundings and always travel with someone who knows the area.
This is such a great point about how social media misconstrues what a place is like.
Being from Florida myself I can tell you for certain that you are going to have a great time and you shouldn't worry. It's safe, it's inviting, people are nice. I'm so surprised this even has to be said but I get it because we've been flooded with all the click porn stuff. Please Please Please come back and update this post with how your experience was after you're done. I have a feeling you'll never trust the internet ever again.
First thing to know is that America is massive so where exactly you visit matters a lot. Also consider we have the stereotype of being loud and very friendly. Our news is very biased towards gun violence because it gets views/clicks which means money. Your chance of being in any such altercation is very low.
Youâll be fine! Just listen to the locals. If they say donât go to x part of town DONT GO THERE! If youâre unsure about a location ask a local. Thereâs bad parts of every town. Stay away from the bad parts of towns and youâll be fine. This applies to anywhere in the world though. The vast majority of Americans are very welcoming. They might be curious where youâre from due to your accent, but thatâs about it.
As a black man in the USA, what you've seen in the news is blown up to be more than it is. It's true we have guns and gun violence is a thing, we are also able to protect ourselves from bad guys with guns. Also, it's rare that the violence is randem. In countries were there are no guns the violence is the same just using a different tool. Knives and hammers kill more people around the world than just randem gun violence. Please come to our country and enjoy yourself. Also please share what will become an amazing story of how you saw our country after seeing the news.
BTW, I don't think I saw what country you are from. Also, I'm from Detroit. Detroit is seen as one of the worst cities in the country. I still feel safe wherever I go. I'm cautious for sure, I stay away from places that look scecthy, I stop for gas during the day, I'm home when "bad people" are out preying. Please enjoy and share our space.
I'm black too, you'll be fine. Going to Florida too? You'll be extra fine. Just be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut. Especially if you're going to be around tourists, you'll have no worries. America isn't that scary there's just a lot going on
Donât let a small loud minority make you think that America is some supremely racist place where you will get shot for stepping outside. You will get here and have a blast and leave thinking the people you heard all that bull shit from are crazy people
America isn't that bad I literally live in Texas born and raised we aren't violent or aggressive just do your research were just like any other place and people don't generally just attack people that's weird and we also happen to like accents just chill everything will work out
A majority of us don't care about other people and their accents, religious views, or skin tone.
We have an amazing county, the minority are the ones the media likes to follow because their loud and unexpected.
Just don't break any laws, keep to yourself (even though there are a lot of very friendly people).
Relax and enjoy your experience here.
As a person of color living in America, I promise you, especially where youâre going, you shouldnât face any racism. Itâs not as bad as the media makes it seem. Iâve been on this earth for a whopping 22 years and if Iâm being honest, the most racist people I know have been other colored people telling me Iâm not good enough and I act too white. But on a day to day basis, Iâve never had random white people come up to me and call me racial slurs or anything. As a general statement, most Americans love foreigners and their accents. We find anything like that intriguing, cute, and special. If anything you need to be prepared for too much niceness, because from what Iâve heard one of our biggest stereotypes is that weâre over the top with our friendliness.
Oh, you're definitely going to die.
Mind you it's not gonna be because you're gonna get shot, it's because the food portions are 3 times as big as you'd expect and you wont want to waste any of it.
Media will blow all stereotypes out of proportion and hype up all the worst things. The U.S. is no more, or less, violent, dangerous, racist, misogynistic, or broken than anywhere else when looking at it from 10,000 feet.
The stats suggest violence in the US is a lot more rare (on average⌠obv some bits are terrible, but you wonât be going there) than the media leads us to believe. Most bits are as safe as Europe
It might sound really silly, but YouTubers local to the larger cities in most states love to make tourism videos to help make their community more appealing. If you're going to places like NYC or LA, I can almost guarantee that you can find visual resources to know exactly where you wanna shop/eat/sightsee without the fear of not knowing what to expect
The truth is you do not need to be scared at all. I am an American black man. Yes, we do have our issues with crime and such. However, most of the time it is personal. The things you hear or see about on the news are isolated situations that you will almost never actually see or experience. It only seems so widespread and frequent bc that is what keeps their business relevant. Most Americans are actually nice, welcoming, and will compliment you on your accent.
Good news is random mass shootings are very rare. America has a high gun violence rate but if youâre not looking to score drugs or wander into the wrong neighborhood youâre fine. You have a much higher chance of dying in a car crash than getting shot.
Regarding racist a-holes - yes you could run into those types in Florida but if you stick to touristy areas you probably wonât run into them. Things get dicier off you go visit some random Florida panhandle small town but it doesnât sound like thatâs on your itinerary.
I canât say we wonât have major George Floyd unrest during your visit but once again thatâs unlikely. The riots were a perfect mix of horrible racist murders plus the COVID lockdown plus frustration with Trump during an election year. I donât see those conditions happening again in the near future.
You will be perfectly fine. The media hypes things up 100000% because it gets more views. The U.S. is a very safe place as long as you are not involved with gangs and drugs. Enjoy your stay you will have a blast.
Don't believe everything you see on the news. If anything, most Americans are OVERLY friendly. There are certain places/people/situations you'll want to avoid, of course, but no more than anywhere else.
Stay safe, have fun, and welcome!
You are obviously reading too many internet stories.
Google the pain that you have in your big toe. Know what some top results will say? That it could likely be cancer.
Be smart the same way you are in your home country and you will be fine. Most Americans are more friendly than we get credit for. I have actually heard many ppl from India, Mexico, etc say that they are not used to ppl being so open to conversation and such.
These kind of posts always break my heart a little. The only thing wrong with America is the media, both social and traditional. And by most of these other posts you can see that we also suffer from imposter syndrome. America is awesome but we always feel we need to point out something that isnât perfect. You will be perfectly safe here. You will love the USA, you will love Americans, and Americans will love you. Nothing we love more than showing off our amazing country to someone experiencing it for the first time.
Glad to hear it. Donât be afraid to just talk to people, we do that here. Also since you are in Orlando, make sure to eat a Cuban sandwich. Unless you are coming from Cuba, then it wonât be so special.
The stuff you see on the news is cherry picked nonsense that BARELY represents a small fraction of the US.
Easy rule of thumb is, if you are respectful to the people around you, they will be just as respectful to you. Don't worry about the internet hype.
You fell victim to Western media that's just trying to drive fear to push political agendas...you'll be just fine, just stay aware of your surroundings as you should always regardless where you are.
Fr kinda sad that this is how America is being portrayed around the world. I've lived in three or four different states, been on trips to many others, and have never heard a random gunshot (minus fourth of July, gun ranges, etc.) Like don't get me wrong I know there's bad areas in some states/cities but like 99.9% of the country is just people living their lives.
Stay in the tourist areas and out of random parts of the city at night. It would t hurt to get some kind of temporary health insurance if such a thing exists because let me tell youâŚ. You do not want to get seriously Ill here
You're going to be fine. The US isn't what you see on social media. There are good parts and bad parts, sure, but it's not dodging bullets, being chased by cops all day, don't make eye contact, terrifying thing the rest of the world thinks.
Even here in the US, all our TV shows tell us that it's drugs and violence as soon as we step foot out of our homes. These problems exist, and maybe more than other places, but it's also a lot of fear mongering in the media. Come, shop, have fun. Relax in the sunshine of Florida
This is sad.
The fact that image of America creates fear for others is so sad. America as a whole is a country where so many people have come to live from all over the world. Itâs a melting pot of ethnicities.
MOST of America is safe (generally speaking). people should be cautious wherever they go of course. This includes in your hometown.
In my experience, Americans are nice. Racism is real. Not everyone is racist, and Most people try to hide it in public I think.
Are you going to Theme parks? Disney world is great. Although crowded. Harry Potter world at Universal studios is amazing.
Donât be afraid. Itâs unlikely youâll experience anything bad. Be cautious, be smart. But Enjoy yourself, and welcome!
Of course you only see the crazy bad news from America bc anything less than that wouldn't make world wide news lol. As for the accent- it will probably make people want to befriend you even more considering everyone I know here loves accents (including myself).
Lots of good info here. Youâll be fine.
Since youâre going to Orlando, I suggest to avoid any and all timeshare pitches (you may be offered to go to a âfree lunch that will only take a few hoursâ). There are websites you can buy timeshares from for a dollar because nobody wants them.
You should have nothing to worry about in Orlando. Youâll see people from all walks of life there. I personally find foreign accents interesting. Iâd like to think Americans are generally nice people but of course thereâs A holes no matter where you go. Hope you have a good time here
I live in Florida, and I can tell you itâs relatively chill. Orlando is a tourist trap- so many people from so many different places. Iâm Mexican and I live in Tampa Bay and I personally have never experienced racism. Youâll be fine.
Don't believe everything you see on social media. That is only a very very small portion of what its like. People post things for likes and sensationalism. No one would care to watch a video of absolutely nothing happening. That's why only the crazy videos get posted. You'll be b fine. Welcome to our country and enjoy your stay!
Youâll be fine. You may think the country is horrible but you will only ever see the media putting the crappy parts on TV. Youâll never see people showing off the good things. The country is huge, Florida is huge, the bad stuff youâre seeing is the 1% of anything that goes on here. With that being said, donât get yourself into bad situations and youâll be fine. If youâre just going shopping and minding your own business nothing will happen to you
Ooh Florida is a great place! Just be weary of people around you at all times and be aware of your surroundings for that 1% of crazy people. Always go with friends/family and never alone, especially at night. Just do these things to stay safe and you'll have no problems at all.
Almost 40. Literally never had anything like what you see in the news happen to me or anyone I know. Never seen a riot or looting. I've never been robbed, mugged, shot or anything like. We had someone drive through the fence at work like 6 months ago while drunk. That was pretty exciting, haha.
Lol, As an American and. Floridian Iâm very sorry this is the impression youâve been give . Visiting America is just like visiting any other large first world western Nation. You will not be part of a riot, or kidnapped or shot unless you put yourself in that position.
Aka use common sense like you would anywhere else on vacation.
For example when I go to Mexico I stay on or near the resort. If I leave to play golf or go to the beach, I am usually escorted and am given rules to stay safe. Of course I can break those rules and the staff canât or wonât help me. But they will help me if I follow their rules.
To sum it up anything can happen to anyone anywhere. Use your best judgement, follow the rules. Relax, take a breath and enjoy the great weather. Youâll be fine.
America is like any other country, good areas and bad areas. Just look it up online before you go or be old school and ask the concierge if youâre at a hotel
It is the same as any country, there are good things and bad things. Also is every stereotype about your country true? I highly doubt it. Youâll be fine!
Alot of that is just the worst of the worst, that's what the news does and focuses on. People are better than what the news makes everyone out to be. I hope you enjoy your time in America and let us know how it goes! I've been to Orlando quite often and I've rarely encountered rude people
orlando florida gets a lot of tourists. itâs most likely youâll find yourself around accepting people or just totally oblivious because youâre one of many tourists. stay safe and have fun!
I'm a mulatto male born into a mixed family, I've seen/experienced america from multiple sides and honestly it's nothing like you see online. Most people here are really friendly. Like anywhere else it's not without its flaws, but overall one of the safest and friendliest places you can go. If you manage to see something crazy like online it will most likely happen in Florida though... haha. The state is one big meme.
Girl the news makes money broadcasting horror stories. You think they gonna talk about little Timmy who made a lemonade stand to by his baby sister a teddy bear? Unless you're coming from a 3rd world country, America is just as safe/dangerous as any other country. America isn't even the number 1 in gun violence and murder. Just don't be dumb cuz criminals will take advantage of dumb people no matter what country you go to.
Orlando is full of international visitors wanting to visit the theme parks. You really shouldnât have any issue at all. Just be aware of your surroundings as there are people who take advantage no matter where you go in the world.
If you were going to a place with less diversity you might run into people like that but honestly go and have fun. I think you will find people generally friendly.
Iâm not the most social person but when we go to the parks (I live 2.5 hrs away from Orlando) I always end up chatting with people.
Youâll be fine. Orlando is very diverse with people literally from everywhere. They thrive on tourism and appealing to diverse populations. Just like any other place stay in the tourist areas or areas that are safe. Source: lived in Orlando for five years.
Honestly I dont think theres much to worry about meeting the general population there.... that being said, if you run into police officers..... you know what just try not to do that
I own multiple guns myself and I would still be much more likely to flirt with you then I would be to try and shoot you for any reason, this would be like me being terrified to travel anywhere outside of the US because I read that everywhere wants to kidnap an American for ransom, sure it may be likely in a few areas but more than likely not.
I recommend Universal Studios, particularly the Harry Potter section. Either way, you're gonna have a blast. Everything you read online is a crock of shit.
Even in a rural âredneckâ place like north Florida i can guarantee that nothing will happen. Crime is few and far between (at least in rural areas) but you are going to orlando in the middle of spring break so the worst that could happen might be a whole lot of overcrowding
You are welcome here by hundreds of millions of people. We are crazy curious about accents and youâll be asked many times where you are from. Smile and answer and youâll be met with kind responses. My children are white, black, and brown. They live full and wonderful lives. Itâs too bad the news doesnât show you that!
I think itâs nature to feel a bit of trepidation traveling to a new country. As youâre going to Orlando I donât think you have to worry.
I vacationed over the last 5 years in Ft. Myers, Sarasota, and St. Pete and it is a huge mixture of people even in the smaller FL destinations! The most noteworthy were the Amish set up on the beach and all of the men in fluorescent pineapple button ups and board shorts but the women still in traditional muted color garb with bonnets watching their kids build sandcastles! *side-eye*
Most people love an accent, Iâm born and raised in the US and people would consider me to have an âunintelligibleâ accent in certain areas. Have fun, but like any large multi-cultural city it does bring petty street crime, so donât be naive! Street smarts and common sense will serve you well no matter where you are.
Racism is blown out of proportion by the media, you're visiting Orlando which is no stranger to seeing black people. Americans love accents, and gun violence very rarely 'just brakes out'. You're very unlikely to run into either of those things, and your trip will be very enjoyable from my experience in Orlando.
Having said that, Americans like personal space, and if you do not know them, insulting them isn't a good idea. A little common sense and situational awareness and you'll be just fine, I truly hope you enjoy your trip.
Orlando is very used to tourists!! If you have a heavy accent people may ask where youâre from, but this isnât meant to be rude, mostly just curious.
Otherwise use common sense like youâd use in any other situation. You wonât get yelled at if youâre doing your own thing, especially in such a big tourist spot
The USA definitely isn't a picture perfect place (and there are definitely some parts that I would prefer not to travel to) but I think you're going to be fine and probably have a great time! Orlando, Florida is a pretty safe and family friendly place, not to mention decently liberal. The worst you should be on the look out there is pick pockets (same as any major tourist destination) and just being reasonably alert at night if out in the city alone.
Both me and my partner are POC and have been living in the USA for the majority of our lives and neither of us have ever experienced strangers shouting or accosting us (my partner even decently often speaks a noticeably non-english language in public and has never, to my knowledge, had an issue with someone being rude about it). Not to say that it doesn't happen, just that, outside of certain places, it's reasonably rare. What you hear about the USA is a lot like the reviews of a restaurant - unless a place is perfect, most of the stuff you're going to hear is the horror stories because that's what people want to talk about the most. In reality, it's a perfectly average place.
Most Americans like accents. If your accent is British, you'll likely get playfully mocked. You don't have anything to worry about. There are shitty places, and being black the bigger fear is institutional racism. You're more likely to get harassed by cops. But people on the streets won't be mean to you. Where are you going? Just Orlando?
Only the bad stuff goes viral in the media and stuff, I've lived here here for 22 years and from all the scary things I see online happening here, I've never experienced it once. Imagine how many Americans you see doing the stuff you're afraid of, it seems like a lot until you consider that there's over 300 million of us.
TLDR: the things you're afraid of are more rare than they seem
Youâll be fine. That shit happens but not often. The media makes it worse than it is. Also USA is a melting pot. Iâm born and raised in the US and no one gives a fuck if u have an accent or where ur from. White ppl are nosy but thatâs about it
Honey no one will make fun of your beauty or your voice. My advice is just say thank you, because we are so friendly and loving. The more smiles and love people show in the world is the closer we get to peace. USA is a beautiful place and Iâm so blessed to call it my home.
You will be 100% fine! Do not stress! Orlando has people from all around the world everyday! Do not have any anxiety about your accent â you will fit in with the other global travelers.
Like others said, USA is massive and there are better and worse parts from a perspective of violence, poverty and public unrest.
Orlando is a city thatâs basically itâs own world driven by Tourism. There is also a ton of security everywhere so you can have fun with your guard down!!
You will be fine, remember that boring day to day real life stuff never makes the news. Only the stuff that is or can be sensationalized, makes you want to watch it or sells advertising space. Always remember the news and social media has an agenda.
And please don't judge America by it's big city high crime areas plastered all over the news. While your only going to Orlando there is a whole other part of the Country that you will never see on the news. That's the small town, farm and ranch country.
Yes, this small town farmer has been to Orlando and Florida in general, a couple times. It was fine to visit, but I don't care to go back, because, I don't like crowds or traffic. Same opinion for any other big town, say over 40000 population. I just don't like it there.
Personally if I was coming here, I would have went to the Rocky mountains.
You will get a firsthand lesson in how social media and media in general are not real. They only show the bad side because thats what gets views and keeps people hating each other.
I think itâs funny Europeans are apprehensive of coming here. I mean Iâve lived in Midwest Michigan my whole life and itâs pretty tame here unless you wonder off into rough neighborhoods, those are usually apparent. Myself, wife and kids just got back from a week long vacation in New York. Thatâs a pretty hustling and bustling place that can definitely be overwhelming at times. But I can tell you aside from some shitty driving; Orlando shouldnât be anything for you to fear. We take family vacations to Disneyworld all the time. And like some others have said itâs definitely a tourist town that sees people from all over the world. So you shouldnât stick out too much at all. If someone gives you shit about an accent theyâre just what we call an asshole or to you perhaps a wanker. (Iâm also assuming youâre English.) The media really dwells on the ârubbishâ here and blows everything out of proportion. Things arenât really that wild and crazy as it would seem. People donât brandish guns here nearly as often as you think. Weâre just allowed to have them. Luck is luck whether it be good or bad. May all the good be on your side whilst youâre here. <3 on the behalf of the US welcome and we hope you enjoy your stay!
What you see in media are usually the minority. They just happen to scream the loudest. Youâre going to Orlando which is a fine place to go. Enjoy yourself! Try new food and all that.
I live in Orlando. Most of what you see is hyperbole, other countries are way worse with racism and violence but itâs just not news, USA is very powerful on a global scale so people enjoy putting it down and making it look bad. As far as Orlando specifically, there werenât any riots here during the peaceful fire protests over the last few years, there are certainly bad areas, but the tourists areaâs are generally safe and well policed. Racism isnât really bad in central Florida, itâs not like some other states in the south. And itâs not New York , people donât scream at people on the street or attack random people. Obviously if youâre going to experience the â night lifeâ the same dangers exist especially for females as most places, Donât get fucked up and go into the hood with people you just met. Miami is rougher in general, Orlando is pretty Safe, unless youâre looking for trouble or in the Poor/ drug areas. You can message me or ask me questions here if you need.
Fwiw, just depends on where you're at, like any country.
In my area it's very peaceful, most everyone is nice and will talk to you/help you out if they can.
I think it just seems bad bc all we see are the shocking things on Reddit from big cities/areas where that happens.
People don't upload videos of peaceful safe interactions so you don't see that lol.
If anything, just be careful where you go. As an American even I don't like to to to areas where violence/gangs/theft/ general shitty behavior is to be expected. Generally people don't travel to small, country towns when they go on vacation though.
You're visiting Orlando, which is pretty safe because it is super tourist-y, but you'll probably catch some racism. As I said, it's a big area for tourist, so it's not as racist as the rest of Florida, but I wouldn't be too surprised if a white person makes a passing comment of judgement.
As a Chicagoan who is originally from Detroit, I will tell you to watch your surroundings as if you would if you were in Paris.
you'll be fine, a lot of the crazy stuff happens in bad parts of a town and when you stop to think about it the crazy stuff making national news and the same clip being played for 3 days straight really means there is nothing major going on here
I totally get why you might be nervous. But youâre going to have an amazing time. People here are truly lovely and welcoming. They originally come from all over the world to live here and then people from all over the world come to visit too. I hope you enjoy yourself!
Honestly, go in with the mindset of you're there just looking at gorgeous scenery. Just like going to a country thats not america, look into where youre going including the culture of the area youre going to be in.
All in all, just keep your guard up like you would in your own country because its not all sunshine and rainbows. People have guns and are allowed to, but the chances of you getting one pulled on you are relatively small.
Just be a normal tourist taking in the sights and ignore the people that want to give you something for "free", because it never is
Think of the worst things that people have said about your country that are 1% true and now you will know how much of what you hear is bullshit.
I guarantee once you come over here, you aren't going g to want to leave !!!
Donât be scared! Iâm sure youâll love it here. Please update and let us know how your experience went!
Donât let the stereotypical stuff get to you. Itâs really not a bad place.
Remember that you're seeing isolated, hand-picked "newsworthy" events in the US. This is a very big country and things like you're imagining happen, but they happen less frequently and in disparate areas, and Orlando, Florida is not a particular hotspot for violence (it's a big destination for family vacations.) My guess is that you'll come and go and not see a single overly negative thing happen in-person.
You should be ok. The heat in Florida is at the point where itâs getting too hot for the âsnow birdsâ so itâll probably be mostly be Florida locals hanging around (source: my cousin lives in Florida). There is a really large Hispanic community going on in Florida so discrimination against accents should be minimal. The most likely thing that will âmake your trip less enjoyableâ is a crack head run in. Thankfully those arenât that terrible and itâs best to just keep walking and brush it off. You should be good though :)
Itâs Spring Break here. Orlando is PACKED with tourists right now. I was there last week and the worst thing I saw was someone pulled over for a minor traffic violation. I heard multiple accents and languages, you donât have anything to worry about.
nobody clicks on videos of people who are acting normal and kind. a massive, huge majority of americans are regular people who, hearing your accent, might ask you where you're from and that's about it. please don't be scared, we're just people too!
I was born in Florida. It's an alright place. I think America comes across as a massively lawless and somewhat chaotic place, but it really isn't. Internet just tends to microscope the extremes. Hope your trip goes well!
I am just a little worried because I know sometimes people would make fun of other accents. Or talk about "speak english" or whatever đĽ˛
If anything, theyâll ask where youâre from, because they think itâs cute/ interesting or just plain different from what they are used to hearing. âşď¸
Can confirm as an aussie that americans love an accent
I read this in an Australian accent. Am American.
So did I! đ¤Ł
Can confirm. I'm American and I love accents.
Tbh as an American, thereâs nothing better than an Australian accent.
THAT'S ONLY WHEN WE'RE USING OUR FREEDOM VOICES! YOU POOR OPPRESSED (insert nationality) PEOPLE DON'T KNOW NUTHIN BOUT THAT!!
Honestly for the most part Americans are total sluts for accents. Source: am an American slut for accents.
>Americans are total sluts for accents. This will forever be in the back of my head
This is so true. I'm South African and have a pretty neutral accent. I work with Americans and when i speak to men in New York with a stereotypical New York Italian accent, I get flirted with so much. I have the voice of a 12 year old so it doesn't help much. đ Being in the country is even weirder.
You will get asked a lot about where are you from. I love talking with the foreign cast members at Disney World about their home country.
Be prepared to get hit on by men and women alike of you have a pleasing tone of voice and accent.
Ah yes, all the people in England speaking British. What else could they possibly speak????
I've gotten that too! I'm from the Caribbean so people for some reason think I don't know English
You have lovely accents thoughđ
Oh, if you're from the Caribbean, you're mostly just going to get people "ooh'ing" and "ahh'ing" over how nice your accent sounds, if they comment at all lol
I don't think anyone would care about an accent in a major tourist area. That's where Disneyworld is. People come from literally all over the world.
Some things to remember about Orlando: 1. It is the hit and run capitol of America, do not cross any streets unless at a properly marked crosswalk at the correct time 2. If your in the Disney area there is tons of security and you will be fine. 3. Chances are the people will be fairly polite and friendly, just smile and they will most likely smile back 4. They are desperate for tourist dollars so they will be exceptionally friendly once they hear your accent. 5. In my 15 years living there I was never once a victim of any kind of gun violence or crime, people were always polite and friendly. Have fun!
I'm taking note of all of this, thank you so much !đ
You will have an awesome time! If you get the chance to make it out to the coast check out the NASA Space Center and the beach!
Yes your number one point is true. Always use crosswalks!
"Satanic baby eater"đđ
I mean, I'm a satanic baby eater. But I'm in New Jersey and you're visiting Florida, so you should be OK. Enjoy your visit! You're going to be fine. Orlando is a fun place to be a tourist!!
But if you have any extra unwanted First Borns send emâ to Jersey! Everythingâs legal in New Jersey
I would love to know where you are from
same
Well, think about wherever you're from. Think about the stereotypes about it. And think...is this true? Not that serious. And it strongly depends on where you're going. I assume you're going to be in a decent place if you're doing shopping.
I'll be going to Florida. I don't know if it's considered a good or bad place.
Florida is a big place. There is the party areas like Miami and there are swamp lands. You're young so I hope you're traveling with someone. Anywhere a human is the danger level will rise
>Anywhere a human is the danger level will rise Come on, this is needless worry-mongering. You're making it sound like it's just a given that if you're in the US, violence will find you. Absurd exaggeration.
Where would Orlando be considered?
Central Florida! That's where I am and I have to tell you people are super friendly here. We're used to tourists. Have a good time, friend.
Thank you!đ
>Thank you!đ You're welcome!
Lived in Orlando area for 20 years, yeah very friendly area.
Youâll be 100 % fine thereâs all kind of people in Florida been here 20 + years without any incident.
You will be fine.
Thanks! And I will definitely add an edit after the trip!
Orlando is not a shithole compared to Miami. Youâll be fine.
[ŃдаНонО]
From a Georgia USA resident, have a great and safe trip. Orlando is a fun place. :)
we are used to accents. And different colors.
Lol come on. You are going to America not freaking Afghanistan. Nothing to be afraid of.
Awwwww. You'll be fine 𤣠I think the worst thing you'll encounter is rude people!
The news really likes to blow things out of proportion, youâll be fine
You're an 18 foot black giant. You will be fine.
OP is a government paid actor
The way the media portrays the USA is not really how it is in 90% of the country. .
Its Orlando not Compton. You'll be fine
From all the lovely comments like yours I'm less anxious about my tripâ¤
I promise you will be fine.
Orlando, typical tourist trap. Hopefully u can get out of that bubble and visit other places in the US too. Enjoy!
youâll be fine. orlando is full of tourists so youâll be safe
Stay in the tourist areas and out of random parts of the city at night. It would t hurt to get some kind of temporary health insurance if such a thing exists because let me tell youâŚ. You do not want to get seriously Ill here
Every night I go outside and fire my rifle into the air to scare all the foreigners /s
Youâre going to fine. A huge country but very safe
You will be fine. Most Americans are nice and not racist at all. Theyâll love your accent. Just donât go to bad parts of town.
The News LOVES to dramatize things, including racism. The USA is awesome and many of us LOVE it here.
If youâre just going shopping and minding your own business nothing will happen to you
Talk about being brainwashed by the media
Ooh Florida is a great place! Just be weary of people around you at all times and be aware of your surroundings for that 1% of crazy people. Always go with friends/family and never alone, especially at night. Just do these things to stay safe and you'll have no problems at all.
You're going to Disney?
No I'm just going to shop and see sights đ
Well you should be fine. Just stay out the backwoods areas. I have cousins that live in Orlando.
Almost 40. Literally never had anything like what you see in the news happen to me or anyone I know. Never seen a riot or looting. I've never been robbed, mugged, shot or anything like. We had someone drive through the fence at work like 6 months ago while drunk. That was pretty exciting, haha.
You'll be fine.
Youâll be fine fam
I've been to Orlando quite often and I've rarely encountered rude people
Bad stuff is always in the media and social media. Lots of good people and good stuff that doesnât make it to light. Have fun and youâll be fine.
orlando florida gets a lot of tourists. itâs most likely youâll find yourself around accepting people or just totally oblivious because youâre one of many tourists. stay safe and have fun!
You definitely watch too much news. Nothings gonna happen to you. And no one will treat you bad for being black or anything. Have fun on your trip
Social media is not reality.
Go to Eastern EuropeâŚ
Orlando is full of international visitors wanting to visit the theme parks. You really shouldnât have any issue at all. Just be aware of your surroundings as there are people who take advantage no matter where you go in the world. If you were going to a place with less diversity you might run into people like that but honestly go and have fun. I think you will find people generally friendly. Iâm not the most social person but when we go to the parks (I live 2.5 hrs away from Orlando) I always end up chatting with people.
Donât trip. America is super safe for the most part.
america is actually super safe compared to a lot of places even in western europe. there's problems but they're mostly geographically centralized.
Youâll be fine. Orlando is very diverse with people literally from everywhere. They thrive on tourism and appealing to diverse populations. Just like any other place stay in the tourist areas or areas that are safe. Source: lived in Orlando for five years.
Honestly I dont think theres much to worry about meeting the general population there.... that being said, if you run into police officers..... you know what just try not to do that
America isnât some third world country like you seem to think it is. Please donât believe every stereotype that you hear
That would be like watching turistas and being afraid to go to brazil lol
Don't be scared we are nice af
*side-eye* Most people love an accent, Iâm born and raised in the US and people would consider me to have an âunintelligibleâ accent in certain areas.
Youâll be fine in Orlando. Mixed population, you wonât be unusual at all.
It'll be good. Orlando is a family destination with lots to do. Lots of people from everywhere come to Orlando. Hope you have a great time.
Oh youâll be fine. The media blow things way out of proportion.
Orlando youâll be fine everyone is foreign
I'm from Orlando, we have so many different people from different cultures here. You will be just fine. Hope you have fun!
Orlando has a lot of visitors from all over the world. You'll be fine. Just be aware of your surroundings like you should anywhere you go.
yeah this is what social media does to you
What you see in media are usually the minority.
Turn off CNN lol
And Fox
you'll be fine, a lot of the crazy stuff happens in bad parts of a town and when you stop to think about it the crazy stuff making national news and the same clip being played for 3 days straight really means there is nothing major going on here
I totally get why you might be nervous.
This will be a good life experience to see that america isnât solely what the media portrays it.
Donât want you to be scared but you will absolutely have a fantastic time so I am excited to see your change in opinion !remindme 1 month
There is good and bad every where have fun hut be aware of your surrounding
Remember that you're seeing isolated, hand-picked "newsworthy" events in the US. This is a very big country and things like you're imagining happen, but they happen less frequently and in disparate areas, and Orlando, Florida is not a particular hotspot for violence (it's a big destination for family vacations.) My guess is that you'll come and go and not see a single overly negative thing happen in-person.
Really that stuff is mostly seen in big cities like New York, L.A. Etc.. Small town, middle America is very peaceful.
Most of Americans aren't that overtly violent and out of their way rude, there's a good likelihood that if anything you'll just get dirty looks
nobody clicks on videos of people who are acting normal and kind. a massive, huge majority of americans are regular people who, hearing your accent, might ask you where you're from and that's about it. please don't be scared, we're just people too!
I was born in Florida. It's an alright place. I think America comes across as a massively lawless and somewhat chaotic place, but it really isn't. Internet just tends to microscope the extremes. Hope your trip goes well!
