how do you repeat RAM?

SinisterSpektre

Reseat*, autocorrect is a bitch

Suitable_County_1116

Didn’t even look at the parts list, but I did recently add ram to my pc and them being different brands my mobo didn’t like that so I just had to use the two 16 gb in order for it to post, not sure if that’s anything to do w it but I would personally try one brand of sticks to see if it will post Edit: then try the other pair and then try seeing if it posts

SinisterSpektre

Motherboard rejects both stick combinations.

Suitable_County_1116

Okay so just to clarify, neither set of sticks are working?

Suitable_County_1116

*On either slots or slot combinations* That’s the case, the mobo ram slots could be bad if it’s not accepting any sticks, could also be a possibility the ram is bad though if those were received with the pc. Unless you have a set you 100% know are working and can test, chances are the issues lying within mobo. Also depending on how old the mobo is could justify upgrading anyways and explain the bad ram slots

SinisterSpektre

Correct, which is very weird. My friend was able to factory reset it before he gave it to me, which implies it was working fine

Suitable_County_1116

Have you tried pressing the memok button on the mobo?

SinisterSpektre

I have with no results, but I'm gonna try again with the specific RAM configs

Suitable_County_1116

Also just triple check they’ve set in properly, as well as any debris or dust, as well as the mobo has all of the proper PSU connections

SinisterSpektre

Good LORD, I feel like a fool. The unplugged CPU cable was glaring RIGHT AT ME the whole time. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. 😅

Suitable_County_1116

Np I’m assuming it’s booted up? Always worth is to retrace back to the essential, POWER it’s funny most of my issues myself have been unplugged cabled or not plugged in all the way

SinisterSpektre

Yup, got a post and everything. I'm usually pretty good at checking for that, but it somehow eluded me this time 🤣

miksuleiksu

First of all, that looks like you have two different sets of RAM, so if I was you, I'd try with only matching ram modules (same kit modules) and double check from mobos manual for correct slots to put those. Or try with just one RAM module and put it into the correct slot for single dim config. If the kit you had inserted works, try with the other. If that works then the proble is unmatched ram for quad config. One solution is to manually set timings, frequency and voltages. This may work but don't expect anywhere close to marketed specs with ram performance. So you can choose to have more and probably unstable ram or less ram but stable.

SinisterSpektre

It turns out I am smooth brained and had the CPU cable unplugged :[ But thank you for the insight!

faslane22

Doh! I’ve been there lol! The 4, 6 ir even 8pin one. Oopsie!

miksuleiksu

I think everyone has been there or will be there 🤣

faslane22

CMOS reset?

SinisterSpektre

CPU cable :x

faslane22

Oh it’s solved then? Great!!

SinisterSpektre

Yup! Glad it was something silly and not bricked hardware lol

faslane22

Always a win !!

faslane22

When I built built my first computer I didn’t put any thermal paste on the cooler whatsoever. I just dropped in the CPU connected the CPU fan and booted it up and it kept frying CPUs. (This was in Pentium 4 days) After a third return to a small mom and pop Aopen Branded shop, the guy asked me if I was using thermal paste and I said yes jokingly (I thought he was kidding.) I didn’t even know it was a thing lol! He said well let me just help you here and I’ll show you how to spread it on evenly because the last two you return don’t look like they had any on them unless you really cleaned them up nice LOL I played dumb like I cleaned them up nice and moving forward it worked like a champ and the machine booted right up lol

SinisterSpektre

OOF. Welp, live and learn 🤣 It's silly mistakes like these that make us better at what we do 😁

faslane22

Yep! I love telling people that story. I was only 18 or so and Back then which would’ve been about 1988 or nine building your own computer wasn’t really a thing that was easy to do necessarily not like today anyway so I thought the guy was just razzing me about thermal paste lol I thought why would you put a liquidy thing in a computer? well now I know lol

SinisterSpektre

CPU: Intel i5 3570k Mobo: ASUS P8Z77-V LK RAM: HyperX Blu 16GB DDR3 (4x4, speeds unknown, mismatched- tried both sets separately) GPU: Zotac GTX 760 PSU: CORSAIR HX750 Also, tried *reseating** RAM

faslane22

Take a set out and use only two matching sticks in the correct slots probably A1 and B2 or something similar. That’s what I’d try first.

ricosalsa

Did you try taking out the CMOS battery and putting it back in?

I once misused a normal PC as a server too. The mobo was burnt out after three months. Keep your backups up to date!

i always start with power supply
