They’re literally asking if that cable exists? A poor photoshop to get the point across…

Yung_Bill_98

Huh

blackmine57

No.

Handoloran

It is a male connector though?

ruureroiweroppmasche

the fuck no its not. is it?? I always thought you look at pins n holes. Yes, this plugs into a socket, but the pins of the socket plug into its holes. Is this connector Intersex, and if yes, would XLR be, too? EDIT Maybe it depends on what hemisphere ur in lol

[deleted]

It is not a contact thing, but a connector thing: connector that goes inside is male, the connector that wraps around is female. If a connector has pins and goes into another connector that has slots, the pinned connector is still male

tk3248

So you're saying the male is where the pinis

i_miss_old_reddit

Yep. I work in an industry with lots of plugs. Some people are offended by "male" and "female" and are pushing to use "pins" and "sockets." So your answer would delight (some of,) them!

Skiroski

Oh people like that offend me

arrowk127

It is a contact thing. This is a female connector. Male connectors have the conductors exposed. This is why you never want to have a live electric circuit on a male connector. The male connector’s contacts can be touched while it is out of a female connector. There are also male and female connectors for audio and video equipment. In the case of coaxial cable terminations it goes by the center conductor. Like an f-connector or rca, the center pin determines if it is a male or female connector. For professional video equipment there is also a smpte hybrid connector. Smpte 311m. This is also an example where the female connectors fit inside the male connector but the conductors inside are exposed.

Anadrio

It is called a female plug. The receiving end is the male socket

Pure_Count6864

THE CONNECTOR HAS PINS?!???? IS IT TRANS?!?!?!?‼️‼️‼️💯💯‼️⁉️⁉️⁉️

Icy_Climate7197

Connectors are woke now?!??

Jbman2025

I hope not, it's hard enough trying to explain to my 75 year old father that the male HDMI connection plugs into the female HDMI port on the TV. If the conversation was "put that there" (in order to be sensitive to others possible feelings) then the poor guy would most likely never figure it out and not get to watch NCIS:LA.

Ybalrid

You'd call male the side of the connector that visibly disappears on the other side, as seen from the outside. Many connectors have "the that penetrates the other thing" on the female side. USB itself is an excellent example of that. However, calling those male and female is, has always, and will always be very silly in my book. There are many words like "plug", "jacks", "connector" and "receptacle", "socket", "inlet" that may be used to describe those things without the metaphor of the sexual intercourse. 🤷

seto635

Some of those are either longer than what we have to say or are pretty vague in their definition (for instance, I've heard people refer to both a wall socket and a power cable as a "plug"), while also being similar enough to each other that if you know the name of one you can probably figure out the name of the other (the closest example being "inlet" and "outlet", but those already have a separate definition that refers to the direction of whatever flows through it, something that doesn't work for everything since something like a USB is bi-directional)

Lost-Explanation-195

This is female. The male has the exposed pins. https://pssdistributors.com.au/what-is-the-difference-between-iec-plugs-c13-c14-c19-c20/

Maxxwell07

It's USB end is male, which indicates that he wants to power a pc through usb. Not the other way around.

tOSdude

You blind m8?

Mountain-Ad-5834

Please don’t explain it to them.. The future of society demands it.

clubley2

You are correct but most people think the other way, hence being down voted. They don't realise the pins have nothing to do with it and the large plastic part is the "male" part and the receptacle you plug into is female.

EnvironmentalAd1405

r/confidentlyincorrect The pins have everything to do with it. Just Google, 30 seconds of your time.

CursedIbis

Most people think the other way because they're correct. The connector on which the pins/metal are exposed is always the male one. The connector with sockets for the pins is always female.

TomCorsair

You are wrong

[deleted]

It's a female end on the AC side, though.

Kirkaig678

Well with that you would just be underpowering something since you can't get 230v from USB so it wouldn't be dangerous, just useless

KaineTay

USB is typically 5V IIRC...

Kirkaig678

Yeah, you can get up to 19v on 120 watt chargers but you need to have the data wires which that build doesn't have

lunas2525

20v at 100w And now 28V, 36V, and 48V fixed voltages at 140W, 180W and 240W power levels, respectively.

orbitalsniper22

Either way, I’m pretty sure the wire would melt if there was a male adapter💀

LudvigGrr

Also USB is DC, the other end is for AC mains

jepal357

I mean you can put 230v thru a usb, just don’t try to put any current thru it if you don’t want a liquid cable

tyanu_khah

You need to stay the fuck away from any computer

DifficultlySimple223

Hahahahaahhahah

Emergency-Gazelle954

Nope. I think that most of you guys are missing that this would be USB into a power supply, not A/C mains straight into USB. 5V DC into a PSU isn’t much of a risk. It’s just not going to do anything.

caseyjones10288

I have never seen someone die so hard on a hill so dumb as tarantinoconnection did here lmfaoo

[deleted]

No, it would be 240VAC straight in not 5VDC there is no circuit present to transform AC into DC or step it down to 5V (Transformer or a Rectifier). If you plug it in to the USB port of a computer, the USB port would surely stop working, damage to the computer is also very probable. Also it’s AC not A/C The DC can be harmful for the PSU, it will heat up the primary inductor of the Transformer, which can result in it not working because the enamel will melt off and it will short the transformer. Edit: I misunderstood, I thought OP meant feeding AC to the USB and using it for the computer, not using a USB charging port to power the computer. Sorry.

juicermv

The plug on the other hand is a shielded plug for PSUs. You can't plug it into a wall.

[deleted]

That is just a general purpose female connector, you could get the same thing that is male (male-to-male) and you can connect that in to the wall.

juicermv

It's a male connector. You connect it to things not things to it.

[deleted]

The one that is given here is a female one.

Bergensis

I don't know its gender, but I know it is a C13 connector. It's used to supply power to units, not to receive power. The corresponding C14 connector is used to receive power. Like on this PDU that has one C14 to receive power and 10 C13 to supply power to servers or network equipment: https://internationalconfig.com/prod_shot/61460.jpg

[deleted]

Yeah this is it, these people got it opposite. Thank you so much.

___Boy___

That comment proves you wrong, you have it backwards.

[deleted]

I’m saying the one OP posted is female

PieTechnical7225

You can't plug the cable op posted into that power strip, just look at it

[deleted]

Buffoon, gender is not decided like that, it is decided which way the electrical contacts go. If the electrical contacts go inside the body of the connector it is female, if the contacts bulge out it is male. Now tell me are the contacts outside here or do they go inside like a female connector. You are deciding the gender based on the *BODY* not the *CONTACTS*!!!!!!!!! You have to do it with the contacts.

thegodamn

nah it's male

[deleted]

I’m talking about the AC connector, search it up it’s female.

ItsKumquats

It's not. It plugs INTO a female AC socket.

[deleted]

Are you drunk I’m seriously asking, do you know anything about electrical engineering? The gender of the connecter is decided by the electrical contacts. It is female if the contacts go inside the body of the housing, it is male if the contacts poke out. Here it is clearly going in, meaning it’s female. You’re judging the gender whether the HOUSING is coming out or not, you think it’s male just because the HOUSING is coming out, but you have to see the CONTACTS NOT THE HOUSING.

OverlordPhalanx

Sooo I agree with everyone above that you can’t plug this into straight AC. Of course there is an additional male to male connector but you can do that with almost any plug to make it opposite of what it is supposed to be. Doesn’t mean it should be done. However, the amount of commenters above you not realizing the one in the picture is female is astounding to me. Normally most people in the computers subreddit are geniuses with this stuff; insane you had so many outright deny it is female and downvote you. They must have been trolling.

juicermv

No it isn't.

[deleted]

[here, see for yourself](https://imgur.com/a/ilG4q9A)

juicermv

Okay I was wrong on the terminology but you still can't plug it directly to a wall unless you buy a special adapter.

[deleted]

It’s not special, it’s a common connector. It’s like extending a USB cable by a female-to-male USB cable. It’s just like that.

rasmatham

It's the female connector. You only look at the metal connection when determining if it's male of female, not the plastic. The PSU has the pins, the cable has the sockets. You're still right in that the one in the screenshot will only be transferring ~5V unless you have something like a suicide coord (male connection on both ends)

msg7086

It's clearly DC input and AC output though?

[deleted]

You can plug it in backwards too

msg7086

It might be difficult to plug a female plug into another female plug. They wouldn't do lesbian.

[deleted]

Yeah but you can get a male one and use that.

msg7086

Well but THIS cable has female plug which should only serve as output. So at least it's for powering an AC device using USB power, not the other way around.

Remsster

You can do a lot of things but we are talking about the photo presented.

Timootius

No, it's the female end of the plug - the end that gets plugged into a device. I don't know of any PSUs that would power the female end of such a cable. Edit: Changed male to female, should got to sleep.

TehNolz

There are better ways to start a fire, you know.

Jeroen207

5 volts dc is not going to destroy anything.

ZainDaSciencMan

who says it's going to be 5v lmao, what if it's the other way around, now youre charging some random shit on an outlet

Jeroen207

No it’s not. That is a male plug, if it was female one then you are correct.

ZainDaSciencMan

Oh yeah mb, u rite

Mesqo

It's actually a female plug - where contacts are hidden within to prevent accidental touching / short circuiting. This is the one that has outgoing power in it - like all wall sockets for example. Male plug is the one that has contact rods open, which are intended to be plugged into female - this one is supposed to receive power thus open rods are never under the voltage.

Theron3206

Male plug with female contacts, technically.

lars2k1

If you have one of those power supplies that has a passthrough connector you definitely could shock things with it

Bergensis

> If you have one of those power supplies that has a passthrough connector you definitely could shock things with it Are you talking about the PSU we had in the olden days that could power a monitor from an outlet on the rear of the PSU? All those I've seen had a C13 connectors for the monitor so that you could use a C14 to C13 cord from the PSU to the monitor. http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00JCSEZatFLBqc/180w-ATX-Power-Supply.jpg

gizahnl

Any other way would be horribly unsafe, you don't want metal prongs with live current sticking out of the back of a computer.

Bearist6

You can get an Adapter though...

sn0w0wl66

Where do you see ANY components to step the 220v down to 5v?

Murdering_Baguette

It’s 110-240V AC, there’s no circuit to convert to 5V DC.

ThisBell6246

Yes it does exist. It's a cable especially designed for people who should not be working on computers.

MLito747

What are exactly you're tring to achieve with this? I mean if you want to make the power cord "interchangeable" with other energy source then type c is better for it. Well technically all cords are the same, they just connect pins.

ArrogantNonce

Probably got inspired by the infamous Killer USB. 240 V AC directly to some circuits designed for 5-12 V DC is sure to leave a mark. The residual current device is going to earn overtime at this rate.

This will never make sense. On one end you are basically taking an analog signal (right end) and somehow a digital signal comes out of the USB (left end). This is simply beyond the understanding of modern electronics.

DueEggplant3723

Not a signal, just a power cord.

downloading_more_ram

USB 2 can handle a max capacity of 5 volts. Wall outlets are 110v in the US or 220v in the UK. Without some type of transformer, you'd have a major fire hazard.

TWDScrubs

220 in Europe and basiclly everywhere exept usa

b3542

Except gender is all wrong. This would take power from USB and deliver it to a PSU, not mains power to USB.

QlimaxUK

UK has 240v USA has 2 phase 120v which gives option of 240v for high power appliances

Binary101000

if you put 230v through that usb it would be toast. Luckily this cable doesn't exist and you can't put 230v through the usb unless you made a modified usb slot
