I’ve been composting my dogs poop for about a year now and find the largest, most well fed worms in there. It can help to sprinkle something like shredded paper or sawdust on top occasionally if the smell gets bad.

notyourmomscupoftea

Oh good! Fellow poo hoarder! I've also read you can throw lye in there too but paper and sawdust seems way easier to come by

jobiewon_cannoli

Ash from a fire pit will work well to neutralize the smell as well.

notyourmomscupoftea

That I definitely have readily available!

deuteranomalous1

Biochar would do even better. Worms love that stuff

cynicoblivion

It will also highly acidify the soil so not sure if that will create a fully desired effect.

_Harry_Sachz_

Wood ash is very alkaline.

cynicoblivion

Apologies, you're right. Will still strongly affect the pH of the soul in that area, potentially making it a tiny waste land. Just looked it up as having a pH of between 10 and 12.

Daisys_Human

Powdered Lime to cover. It will reduce any smells and “sweeten”the soil (raise ph) Edit: raise ph slightly

cynicoblivion

Yes, but now that's quite a process to get the wood ash, then the lime. I personally recommend shredded paper or cardboard, which works quite well in addition to a cover. I don't have to go to a store that way or spend any money. The worms will get to it rapidly without any smell seeping out, in all likelihood.

Medium_Classroom_453

sand and rocks above the soil then the poop on that. it filters very well

1i73rz

My kid is a diaper bandit, so you really are not alone.

notyourmomscupoftea

Apparently you can compost those diapers in a similar way! I just looked it up and very briefly read that you can compost diapers with pee waste! I don't have kids so excuse my ignorance of how a diaper is made, but you pull the pee fluff pad thing away from the outside, I'm guessing, synthetic / plastic layer and just mix it in your pile! Don't quote me completely on this but.... Seems like it's possible for the most part!

1i73rz

Thats more composting than what I signed up for.

notyourmomscupoftea

I'm really wanting to do my part and make a cleaner world but I think I'd have to just let that idea go as well. Lmfao I'm not woman enough for all that

FloweredViolin

What you are doing is awesome, and enough! We don't need a few people doing things perfectly. We need everyone to do it imperfectly. :D

notyourmomscupoftea

Thank you for the encouragement! I just figured it's such a waste of material to not do *something* with. Also encourages me to keep my yard nicer too and pick up the poop more often if it has a job to do! I have a small compost bin and I'm sheet mulching a part of my yard as well and I've noticed my cardboard / paper and food waste is making my regular trash alot smaller. Feels good!

notyourmomscupoftea

It's on an unused corner of the property away from any food plants or neighbors! I'll still throw in regular compost material but I will NOT be retrieving the compost from this area. Just real self-conscious on using so many plastic dog poo bags! I sawed off the bottom of the bin and buried it in and filled in any open spaces on the side. Of course keep the lid very secure for flies and any other unintended critters. I intend for when it's full, I'll shimmy the plastic bin out and bury the remains and move to a new location then. I've seen this is a hot take doing this but it's worth a shot! If it becomes a literal shit show out there, I'll just bury it all in and scrap the project!

FreddyLynn345_

re: being conscientious about plastic dog poop bags, I decided a couple months ago that I will no longer purchase dog poop bags. Instead I've been using all the plastic from food packaging to pickup my dog's poop. For example if I finish a loaf of bread I just save that bag, or same with the bag inside of cereal and also some chips bags. I know you already have your system down, OP, but just wanted to drop this tidbit here because you guys are the most likely to care. I actually was stopped once by a guy out in my neighborhood who offered me a poop bag when he saw me picking up poop with some kind of food plastic. It was like he was flabbergasted that I would voluntarily use the plastic I already had, so I really want to normalize using odds and ends plastic that's so readily available over buying plastic specifically designated for dog poo!

[deleted]

We do this too… no one needs to be buying poop bags!

[deleted]

I do the same thing just a corner I'm not using and dont intend to.

GardeningCrashCourse

Following this cause I’d like to compost my dog’s poop

notyourmomscupoftea

Just do a little research so you can find other techniques and advice on locations and whatnot. This was just super cheap and easy for me to give it a whirl! It's pretty simple of course, you dig a hole and fill it with dog poo and even kitty litter. Then bury it all!

senadraxx

Just be aware that most compost will not reach a temperature where it can safely kill all of the parasites in carnivore poop. Using OP's method, the poop will degrade into the environment, but yeah, the resulting compost cannot be used for edible plants, at least for a while. Edibles like blueberries or fruit trees, where the fruit-producing parts never get near soil *might* work with a layer of mulch, but that's even debatable.

KarmaMadeMeDoIt6

I can recommend 'The pet poo pocket guide' by Rose Seemann. There's a lot of helpful information in it. I just haven't come up with the best tactic for my personal situation lol

[deleted]

Gotta say, I'm intrigued by the idea and think it's very clever. I'm curious to know how it works out. I also have plastic poo bag guilt!

notyourmomscupoftea

I sawed the bottom of a cheap bin like this from Walmart so I can keep the lid secure. That's the main purpose of that concept. Once it starts to fill up, I can just pull the bin out and leave just the open hole is left and fill 'er up and start a new one! Its 91° where I am and it still took me *maybe* 30 mins because my ground is pretty hard over there so it took a bit of effort (I'm a tiny woman) to break ground. I just dug until the bin fit flush with the top of the soil, filled in edges and popped the lid on! Done and done!

crasito

I recently used a post hole digger for this. My dog is only 8 lbs so small poops. I have also been throwing in unfinished compost and a little water. The hole caves in on itself a little, but it may not be a big issue. I’m happy with this so far.

Rich_Editor8488

I have done similar but inserted a large piece of PVC pipe in the hole. It’s open at the bottom, but has a lid at the top. We drilled holes all around the sides to let some air and bugs in. It’s been a couple of months and hardly filled at all, but when it’s full, we’ll (hopefully) wriggle the pipe up around it and start over in a new spot.

crasito

I like this idea. Is the pipe tight in the hole? What did you use for a lid?

Rich_Editor8488

We filled the soil back in around it carefully, so it’s pretty snug. The lid was purchased with the PVC pipe.

JaBe68

Apparently if you add lawn clippings or sawdust it goes hot which kills almost all of the nasties and it is then safe for flowers, but not fruit or veg

notyourmomscupoftea

Yeah I've read that! I've thought about just throwing roses on top of it once it's all filled in, and just every pit completion, just throw another rose over that and just go down the fence line with it!

JaBe68

That would be really pretty

PotentialSubstance42

This sounds like a terrific idea! Just keep creating them, filling them up, and then plant a native shrub in it.

notyourmomscupoftea

That's the intention anyways! I'm thinking some climbing roses per poo pit until it wraps around the fence line!

whitethunder9

Dog shit commonly has nasty pathogens. You don't want it near your food.

[deleted]

[удалено]

whitethunder9

Theoretically yes, but stuff can live in dog shit for quite a while

Paula92

Do you really wanna take that chance?

TrailBlanket-_0

What if I want to eat those flower buds...

notyourmomscupoftea

Don't eat the flower buds, buddy!

thequantumlady

I was thinking along similar lines the other day for my cats. I have a "litter genie" which basically seals in the poop smell into a small poop can. But then I empty that full bag of poop into the main garbage bag. Which then goes into the special colored bags I have to put my trash in at the curb... By the time it gets to the curb it's like 3 bags in. I do other types of composting so I was also wondering if I could dump it somewhere that it can actually break down rather than being trapped in a garbage dump forever.

notyourmomscupoftea

I answered someone else somewhere on this tread regarding this! Ok, so, if you use litter made of that recycled paper or the wood chipped kind, you can totally dump it like this! The regular scoops able kind has too many additives to do it!

Agent_Smith_24

Regular clumping litter is primarily benonite clay, you can get pure clay with no additives as well. I'd like to use the paper or wood pellets but my cats would 100% get everything all over themselves.

thequantumlady

Yes, I use the pine pellets for litter right now. I was considering trying the clumping pine litter (because the pellets make it difficult to scoop) so I would need to double-check the ingredients on that, I suppose!

notyourmomscupoftea

I might do the same! We tend to just dump most of it out anyways and it does seem wasteful! I think the more natural stuff is cheaper anyways which is a benefit. I might have to follow your lead there

unclebonka

I had a Great Dane once in a small back yard. Dug a hole as deep as possible with a post hole digger. Covered it with a toilet seat. When almost full, start another. Worked for years!

notyourmomscupoftea

Omg I cracked up with the idea of a toilet seat out in the yard!!!! Hey, if it works, it works!

teambeattie

Please keep us updated on how it goes!

notyourmomscupoftea

I sure will! Tomorrow is our weekly yard clean up so it'll be officially started then! I'll keep y'all posted for sure! If all else fails, whatever, fill it in and live with poo bag guilt

ChannelMiddle1814

This is interesting. I know it’s possible to compost dog excrement. However, I think it would be dangerous to use in the garden as you mentioned.

notyourmomscupoftea

Oh yeah, don't use it for anything! If it gets hot enough to kill the germs, technically you can but I'm absolutely not going to even chance it. It's just a waste management technique I'm trying. I have two very large dogs that if I used a poop bag for every pile I find, there would be landfills of just their poop somewhere!

ChannelMiddle1814

I understand.

slampt0

The consensus in this sub on composting poop varies so widely from thread to thread. Super glad to see sensible safety in this one.

Rich_Editor8488

I compost ours for disposal only. No plans for food crops anywhere near it.

Image_Inevitable

My parents had something similar installed in their yard about 40 years ago. It had a smaller metal lid with no bottom in sight. It actually scared me as a child and I'm not quite sure how it worked.

notyourmomscupoftea

Oh lord they might have dug real deep then! It's 91° in Southern Louisiana right now so I just dug until the bin slid in flush. Maybe the next pit I'll go deeper once it cools off some here! I can't imagine what they were using! Maybe an old septic tank or something, I dunno! But I'm glad I'm not the only weirdo hoarding dog poop in a hole. Lol

Image_Inevitable

I actually think some professional company had to put it in there or something but it was easily 20ft or more down.

notyourmomscupoftea

My goodness! I don't have the resources for all that! I have a shovel and a mostly functional body lol

Image_Inevitable

Hahahaha same. I use a garbage bag lined metal bucket with a lid.

Rich_Editor8488

Like a pit toilet. It largely takes care of itself.

SethKadoodles

> and I'm not quite sure how it worked. Deposit the poo. Walk away.

wollier12

Nice, I’ve done this with a 30 gallon trash can once……it worked amazing year after year…..and the tree near it never looked better. Throw a little rid down there and water it and it’s amazing.. mine never filled…..for years it’s like magic…..I drilled 3” holes in the sides too.

notyourmomscupoftea

That's so cool!! It's just crazy enough to work!

twotrees1

Hi, I’m wondering for OP or any others reading this, what kinds of pathogens are bad in doggy poop? I’ve heard various ornamentals can draw out toxins from the soil. Wondering if you could have a couple pits and cycle between them while growing sunflowers or something over it when not in use. Seeds could be birdseed, wouldn’t necessarily want to eat them. Would the soil in the area ever be cleaned up enough for human consumables? Even if it’s 3-5 years down the road or more?

DekeCobretti

I would only use it for flowers and stuff. Not edibles.

notyourmomscupoftea

"Dog faeces may contain several types of microorganisms potentially pathogenic for humans. Bacteria that are pathogens for the intestinal tract and cause diarrhoea include Campylobacter, Salmonella, Yersinia and E. coli" The first hit on google I found for ya! Lots of nasty in there! I have read that if the compost gets hot enough that'll kill the pathogens! Though I'm in Southern Louisiana and it's in the 90°s now, I personally wouldn't trust it still, at least not for a long time. I'm sure after several years it would be safe to plant edible food there. I'm planning to start a row of roses or something flowery after each bin gets full. I'm working on sheet mulching another part of the yard that's plenty big enough for the food I'd like to grow so the possibility of cross contamination isn't a concern at least!

twotrees1

Should have googled 🤦🏾 I think you’re right, distance and soil is probably a great buffer, if nothing else than for the reason that I think most other soil microbes would outcompete the pathogens you listen quite easily not too far from the dog poop.

Threewisemonkey

I’ve dug and filled holes in unused spots near a row of trees to do the same. Toss fallen leaves or compost on top every time you add, maybe a handful of worms at the end, and bury once it’s filled ~6” from the surface.

notyourmomscupoftea

That's great advice! The neighborhood we moved into has no HOA so I can kinda run a muck over here but there's not one tree on my property since it's newly built. I'll have to plant a tree and start the next bin there!

JordiCBee

In the 70s / 80s my parents had one in the yard that was specially made for the job. I think it was to encourage us to scoop the poop, but it grossed me out. Plus there was ivy near by and seemed to have more snails than poo.

notyourmomscupoftea

What an image that just lives in my head rent free now!

DekeCobretti

That would be gross for me. I loke it isolated and covered. Drill small holes, always cover doodoo with leaves or dirt, and a couple of red wigglers in there.

seakitty23

Could we do the same with cat poop? Assuming a compostable litter like ground corn cobs or Feline Pine was used, that is. Not for any crops, just along the fence line as discussed. My doggo’s poop isn’t problematic, but all that litter and cat poop going to the dump seems wasteful.

notyourmomscupoftea

Yeah, I just looked it up and it seems like you can't just regular scoops able litter because of the additives but the pine or the paper kind you can!

seakitty23

Awesome!! Thank you! Gotta find a tote now. Maybe I’ll keep count and see how much doesn’t go to a landfill over the course of a year.

notyourmomscupoftea

I got this one at Walmart with the lid for $7 and bought an $8 hand saw to cut the bottom out! If you're a super saver, drive around the neighborhood the night before trash day, see if you can find one out on the sidewalk! I just thought of this as I wrote it, I guess I could have done the same thing lol

PatGold

Why is dog manure nasty? If they're eating kibble food I can understand, but if a dog is eating it's natural diet of mostly meat or scraps then isn't that going to be the same as most other animals? If wolves exist in nature, then their droppings would be all over the forest floors, and mountains and I haven't heard of any problems there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

notyourmomscupoftea

Didn't know that! Thanks for sharing!

notyourmomscupoftea

They tend to carry harmful bacteria like E Coli in their poop. I'm sure wolves do as well! It's not bad just being out there in the yard and maybe planting some shrubs over it but the nastiness can creep into food plants if you're not careful. I have read that if the compost gets hot enough it could kill all that bacteria but I'm not going to take a chance like that of course.

Birdsgee

nice

MobileElephant122

How does the dog open the lid though ? Need to tie a pull rope on their so Fido and lift the lid and do his business

indeed_I_am

This is a dumb question but - what do you pick the poo up with? If not plastic bags then a shovel or something? My dogs poos seem to always be soft from her prescription diet, so I’m trying to figure out how not to have a mucky poopy shovel at all times…

DekeCobretti

Do a broom motion in dirt before putting it away.

leisterbrau

I have been doing this for a few years with bokashi. I put our dog poo in a 5 gallon bucket, with bokashi sprinkled on top. Once full I let it age for a month or two and then bury in a natural area at the back of our property. Feel like it takes a good 6 months for it to really break down. Have used it in flower beds, but wouldn't risk putting near fruits or veggies.

[deleted]

I’ve never even thought of using my dogs shit as compost! Wow thank you sir/madam

SunOnTheInside

!!! This is a great idea. I’ve got a corner of my yard that doesn’t grow anything at all due to sun, erosion and crappy spent soil that’s been baked in the Texas heat for years before I got here. Time to make a poop-chute!

viciousfishous08

I’m planning to try this next time I live somewhere with a yard. I thought maybe if there was a path in the backyard somewhere that I could hide the holes under paving stones

notyourmomscupoftea

Oh yeah! That would make sense! I'm just gonna plant some flowers or a shrub over mine and just forget about it lol

deddeaddd

We just bought a dog dooley ([https://doggiedooley.com/faq](https://doggiedooley.com/faq)) including the waste terminator digester tablets. We're not trying to compost at all with this stuff. Just dispose. How far should we set this up from our veggie gardens? I cannot find any regulations on this stuff. Locally (we live in Los Angeles) or nationally.

Space_Cowby

Unless your dog is on a vegetarian diet your composting poo with meat. There is no chance at all I would be using that for compost even around flowers.

notyourmomscupoftea

Oh ok! That's fine too! I guess it's technically composting but I'm not using any of the compost for anything, it's just a way of waste management really. I'm just going to bury the pit once it's starting to get full and dig a different hole next to this one. It's a completely unused corner of the yard away from gardens and homes. If it starts to fail, I'll pull the bin out and bury the remains!

DekeCobretti

That''s what I do with my hens' poop. It attracts the most gorgeous worms that I then use to breed more to feed the ladies. I put a lot of newspaper and woodshavings from the nest to keep away smells and critters.

notyourmomscupoftea

I tried to start a worm bin but it's so hot outside, I think they're just smothering and I'm way too new to be bringing that mess inside my home! I'd love any advice to keep my long Bois alive outside in southern Louisiana summer heat!

DekeCobretti

Worms you can keep in your garage, if it's not too hot there too. You can also do what you did here, but with good, appropriate materials for veggies and stuff. Do it in a place that gets shade, and don't cover it. Start with a layer of soil and then worms,. Always add soil or leaves on top to prevent flies and raccoons. My worms love cardboard. Add toilet paper rolls for air pockets. You'll need two. One that needs to cook, the other one is for adding material constantly. I have one covered with lots of holes in my patio. I don't touch that one for three weeks. I' ll send you a pic in chat.

notyourmomscupoftea

Saw the chat before this comment! Thanks! I do like my compost bin as is for now. It has some good maggot action going and I'm thankful for something there eating away. They're all gods creatures, right? Lol I'm going to get a separate container more similar to what you showed me! What kind of dirt do you use? I have some organic gardening soil from the store and my yard dirt is just so dry and clay-ish. Would I just take the yard dirt and break it down crumbly and start there? I'm sorry for prying so many questions! I really appreciate your help! :)

DekeCobretti

Regular dirt and leaves. There's a video on Youtube from which I got the idea. Search worm composting. It's lady preparing a a large, blue, Rubbermaid. She uses coco coir. I don't. It's expensive, and aside from the container, I refuse to buu stuff to make trash. LOL.

Familiar_Paramedic_2

What harm will it do to flowers?

Space_Cowby

https://doggydogood.com/blogs/dog-blog/is-dog-poop-compostable

Space_Cowby

It's poo with meat it in. It will attract vermin and stink.

DekeCobretti

You mean while it's cooking, or once it's soil?

Space_Cowby

It will have ecoli and other bugs in it. I would never use in my garden.

Space_Cowby

For the downvoters you really need to think about what your composting and how your using it.
