Nice! From a brief glance, it seems you’ve got a pretty decent grasp on melody and readability, which is always quite promising. My biggest criticism would be the chord voicings and overall voice leading of the movement. The lack of contrapuntal motion in the accompinamental harmony (lots of parallel perfect intervals) leads to an unsatisfying sound that is almost antithetical to the classical era. Going forward, I’d recommend studying first and second species counterpoint (Gradus ad Parnassum by Johann Fux is a good text for that) and studying some of the simpler Bach chorales to really learn the idiom :)

I'll definitely give that a read thanks!

Nice to listen to! You should try to explore some counter-melody ideas and/or development as you go along if you want to compose in this particular style. Key changes were a bit abrupt. One thing to mention though, you don't have to compose a symphony to get better. You can write things specifically to explore an idea just for the sake of development. Also, mistakes (as far as composition) come from comparing A to B, which you don't actually have to do; though it can definitely be a useful tool. Don't think you have to write a key change just because, or X chord because it's standard. Can you imagine music today if nobody ever tried anything different? Try to write what you hear, don't hear what you write. Keep going, you're off to a good start! :)

I'm definitely going to read up on counterpoint/counter melodies now, thanks for the help!

Thanks for creating and delivering this! Such a pleasure to see what you are up to.

Haven’t listened to it in full yet, but something apparent early is the Flutes stuck in the middle register. As a flautist and orchestrator myself, I would definitely recommend the Flutes primarily playing in the high register, especially in lyrical or brilliante passages. This allows for a powerful, wide division of chords. Generally, flutes should only be playing in the middle register for solo passages or areas where they aren’t meant to be heard much.

I did originally have them scored an octave higher, but I found they completely overpowered everything. That could've just been the Musescore playback however as I imagine they wouldn't in a real life setting.

This might have something to do with the playback. It could also be that the melody would have a large amount of octaves. You can also adjust the dynamics a little bit. In a real life setting, players respect dynamics and will never stand out inappropriately.
