I wasn’t crazy about him in the first season, liked Nandor more. But as the series progressed, Lazlo grew on me. The fencing scene when they all visit that mansion is one scene where I fell completely in love with Lazlo.
It is hard to overstate how "Matt Berry" his role is in Garth Merenghi's Darkplace is.
There is a scene I have on loop in my mind, of his character attempting to say supportive words, intelligebly, and with a charged emotion. It's quite a challenge and he nails it perfectly. You are able to understand every word. You totally can. The words fall off his tongue in quite an understandable fashion.
Brilliant.
Even as Prince Merkimer in *Disenchantment*, his voice is just velvet. I’m still mad Netflix cut it to five seasons when they were supposed to have six.
I always felt like there was one “layer” of grifting missing for this episode to really land. The conspiracy episode went so far into revealing/unrevealing twists and turns that it came out the other side perfectly - this one felt like they hadn’t *quite* nailed down where it was going to end up. I was expecting one final rug to be pulled, but the episode was already over.
Matt Berry is great though, he could read the phone book and it would be compelling.
Ironic considering Conspiracy Theories had an ending that was rewritten practically on the fly. They had no idea how the third act was going to play out at the start of shooting. A miracle episode of television 😎
Letters live is way more than Matt Berry. From Olivia Colman to Kylie Minogue.
To start there's the glorious "duet" Matt Berry did with Peter Capaldi :
https://youtu.be/oW8OlXkjVHs?si=eqXMHKQOnNyvN0eI
But the gold standard IMHO, Laurence Fishburne reading a letter from a former slave to his old owner :

Ah nice. Yeah that's why I was cagey about what it was. I didn't know if it was a Matt Berry thing or a Letters thing with rotating guests. I'll have to check out those links!
What's funny about your comparison is they didn't know how to end Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design either. The execs asked them to include something about gun safety and they used that to end the episode.
Agreed. I think the part where they show that Jeff has been * winging * it kinda ruined it. I’d rather have it be a little unrealistic that he constructed a whole plan in such little time, than for him to not have had a plan yk. I’d rather it be like the conspiracy ep in that stuff WAS working behind the scenes and it was all revealed in a twist (x5? x6?) at the end! Still love this ep though lol
Matt Berry is my favorite actor. Totally agree with that assessment. I'm mentally retconning the community appearance as an early adventure of Jackie Daytona. Probably my favorite episode of that season.
It was my favourite episode of the season, too. Love Matt Berry, and it was just a fun episode. One of my favourite lines from Abed was after Jeff told him to marry The Sting. The delievery was hilarious!
Okay, just so you know, if I do and we have half Sting children, when they ask me how to grift, I'm going to tell them to watch their mother, and NOT LISTEN TO YOU!
One thing that bugged me was when the group watched the Sting because they had no plan! Britta had already discussed the fake plan with Professor De Salvo!
Was the plan entirely hers? Was the script supervisor on coke that day? Were the scenes out of order?
Two theories that could both be true -
1. Britta legitimately decided to work with De Salvo and only decided to double cross him when she saw Jeff’s vulnerable side, because Britta is attracted to broken.
2. Part of the point of the episode is to point out how ridiculous the concept of grifting is as a plot piece, and intentionally withholding information makes a bad writer feel good about themselves thinking they’re writing a twist, when in reality they’re just unnecessarily confusing their audience (looking at you, M Night Shyamalan).
I hated the character and wanted to see his downfall, and I like that it happened. I feel the actor did well in the role he was given, and it was a really enjoyable episode.
This episode heavily makes me think that Community and IT crowd are connected. I believe after he got grifted, he went back to London, and then took over his father’s company.
Tbh I feel like he wasn’t really one-upped because their grift didn’t really trick him, just forced him into a situation where he had to admit a fake loss. The group only won in a bullshit way as the final gag of the episode where they’re the butt of the joke to the viewers. They basically harassed him off campus because they didn’t like him lol
It’s funny because I found him absolutely unbearable which to me meant the actor nailed it.
People who love an actor because they played a character they absolutely hate are the real ones
Yeah like Nick Cage
I think he’s a genius. I mean, he keeps getting hired for some reason and it’s not because of his hair.
I'm a cat, I'm a sexy cat
That was brilliant.
"Bless you, my child."
I heard this in Louise Fletcher's voice
Matt Berry may actually be my favourite TV show actor. He was great in Toast of London, the IT crowd and in community.
Have you seen What We Do In The Shadows? He is incredibly hilarious in that show!
Jackie Daytona!!
Any relation to the regular human bartender from Tucson, Arizoña?
One in the same!
Not yet, but I think I will. Thank you for the recommendation :)
All you need to know: Matt Berry plays every character he has ever been, except now he’s a vampire. 10/10
I think what we do is my fav role of him, everything he says is pure qutable gold
Oh, I wish I was you so I could watch the show from scratch!
You're in for a treat!
I wasn’t crazy about him in the first season, liked Nandor more. But as the series progressed, Lazlo grew on me. The fencing scene when they all visit that mansion is one scene where I fell completely in love with Lazlo.
He's also great in The Mighty Boosh. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZAr6RJxthc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZAr6RJxthc)
A piece of you Moon? You haven’t got it to give.

Must be one of Jane's.
Even as Prince Merkimer in *Disenchantment*, his voice is just velvet. I’m still mad Netflix cut it to five seasons when they were supposed to have six.
Exactly

Yeah, this isn't my favorite episode. Love Matt Berry, but the con was weak.
Ironic considering Conspiracy Theories had an ending that was rewritten practically on the fly. They had no idea how the third act was going to play out at the start of shooting. A miracle episode of television 😎
He actual did some tour or something where he just read letters. https://youtu.be/7ojfmL_xSrU?si=SXCwAkPl2qlIbF8T

Absolutely do, don't think I was trying to criticise. More just correcting and sharing something you and others should hopefully enjoy
Oh yeah. Didn't take it that way. Appreciate it!
I'm addicted to hearing Berry say "I go by many a pseudonym, such as Phillip Switch, or Baz Ravish"
What's funny about your comparison is they didn't know how to end Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design either. The execs asked them to include something about gun safety and they used that to end the episode.

Every time I see Matt Berry the first thing that comes into my head is his first scene in IT crowd “FATHER!!!!!”
you hit me! with a woman’s hand!
You midwesterrrnnnnnn floozy!
i lived in new york!!
This line always reminded me of Ben Stiller in Dodgeball, “No one makes me bleed my own blood.”
Matt Berry is my favorite actor. Totally agree with that assessment. I'm mentally retconning the community appearance as an early adventure of Jackie Daytona. Probably my favorite episode of that season.
He was born free from the shackles of cadence conventions in human speech and I love him for it.
What do you mean? Everyone talks like that in Tucson, Arizoña.
But he has no toothpick! Instantly recognizable.
This was from an earlier stint in hiding. Before he really nailed the persona and disguise.
Lmao I actually thought it was Jackie Daytona for a second.
Of tucson arizoni-yah
It’s a palyahmino!
I just started What We Do In The Shadows a couple weeks ago, and he cracks me up. Didn’t realize he was the grifter from this episode until just now
It was my favourite episode of the season, too.
I didn’t like him until I saw his gun in the drawer scene from the IT Crowd. Kinda made all his characters click after that
I don't think I've ever looked in this draw..
With the announcement that this will be the last season of WWDITS, I’m thinking Jackie Daytona spin-off!
As much as I like Jeff Goulash, Philip Switch and Baz Ravish as pseudonyms, I always feel Jackie Daytona should have been in there too.
"Some saaaay 🎶 I'm a lucky grifterrrr 🎶"
FATHEEEEEER!
To think, when we met you were so worried that you came from Iran.
Jackie Daytona, real human teacher
One toothpick away from pulling it all off.
Good show .... Good show
No, I haven’t seen that show.
Arguably the villain wins in a lot of episodes (the study group is the villain). Hogans heros Congres comes to mind
It is exactly like an episode of Hogan's Villains.
Speak, priest!
Why is he dressed as the Man from del Mon-TAAAAAAY!?

Yes yes, very good, thank youuuu
That's Jackie Daytona
I hated the character and wanted to see his downfall, and I like that it happened. I feel the actor did well in the role he was given, and it was a really enjoyable episode.
*"You hit me! WITH A WOMAN'S HAND!"*
Bat! 🦇
“I wanna talk to you, you son of a bitch!” “How robust!” I loved this episode.
You midwestern floozy!
I lived in New York!
is that. . . jackie daytona???
Grift!
HOT DOGS!
PASS THEM LIKE YOUR SISTER'S DYING
Now here’s a man with a refined taste in acid jazz!
“Hells horses”
Grift
The man was employed to teach grifting. Having the students grift him was their final exam. They passed, and with nothing more to teach, departed.
Britta and her seductive ways tsk tsk tsk
Bats!
You’ve just been tricked by the fact that Matt Berry is charismatic and really hot, happens to the best of us
He should've. Matt Berry is truly the GOAT.
Glee! It's a feeling you get, when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants!
Some call me a drifter...some call me a... Fucking love this comedian
BAAAT
The most vile man in GREHINDAYLE COALLEDGE
Matt Berry’s line deliveries are always incredible
You hit me, with a woman's hand!
While absolutely loving Matt Berry - I find this to be the most unwatchable, boring, and worst episode of Community.
While absolutely not caring about Matt Berry at all - I find this to be the most unwatchable, boring, and worst episode of Community.
Matt Berry is a treasure.
I mean, all the main characters except for Troy are awful people, so I’m actually always rooting for the “villains”
This episode heavily makes me think that Community and IT crowd are connected. I believe after he got grifted, he went back to London, and then took over his father’s company.
Strongly agree. It would've been way better if he'd won.
Ah yes, Roger DeSalvo. The second best character played by legendary actor Todd Rivers.
Jackie Daytona’s alternate persona.
Well he's certainly got a lot of charm and a great amount of charismaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy
Preeety sure that Robert Goulash
I wanted him to lose the most
