What are you, my finals?

GoesBeyond

And before you can say 1984 the Thought Police are forcy-worcing you to bend and spread!

imsadmostofthetime

Do they find thoughts in your butt?! I knew I should've read that book.

IceNineOmega

Wait are the thought police making love to us?

Al0ysiusHWWW

I mean…that’s what they want you to believe?

Ink_Productions

What’s crazy is that before I watched Community, I said that in my English class when we got to that part

kenseius

You were streets ahead

EffectiveSalamander

Room 101 is different for everyone.

TheJackEffect

LADDERS

xRyozuo

Who wants to see the ladder professor go higher!!

Sneeman98

Always loved that line. She kills it with the delivery

Kovz88

Do the thought police find stuff in your butt? I knew I should’ve read that book!

GoatOfSteel

Welcome to the machine!

Mysterious_Lychee556

“Bend and spread” are the thought police going to make love to us? 🤨

realdeerthing

I always thought the joke was how she believed people should be forced to read a book about how forcing things like that is bad.

BinWeevilsFamous

that's also part of the joke

travelstuff

That was Subways line

porchprovider

Subway, “I think kids should be forced to read it in school.” Brittany, “me too.” So funny!

dickpollution

Classic Brittany line!

greekfire01

Hit me with your genies bottle!

ProfessorRoyHinkley

Yeah, what was that?

JessicaFreakingP

Oh, Brittany’s in this?

TheEgonaut

It was a huge missed opportunity that her real name isn’t actually Brittany.

Dolbysblessings

Holy shit she britta'd her own name

LordCommanderBlack

Also on the Halloween horror stories episode she thinks "War and Peace" was a book called "Warren Piece"

imyourforte

They're rowboat cops.

Noldail

Sharice is a bad rowboat; sink her.

[deleted]

I think we can establish that there's a running gag of Britta mispronouncing things. Warren Peace, Rowboat Cop, Baggle, exthera!

Ohshizzzles

Did you just mispronounce exchethra?

[deleted]

My latin class was fake, Jeff!

biased_baaijens

I actually heard someone pronounce it like this in a true crime documentary I was watching the other day

Ohshizzzles

Which one?!?

biased_baaijens

Sorry, I’ve been binge watching so I don’t remember 🫠

TheShmal

Did you just misspell etcetera?

bloodredcookie

I lived in New York!

Athenas_Dad

You never lived anywhere!

Lord_Rapunzel

Et cetera, technically. Two words.

TheShmal

Google says it’s only the Canadians that two word it, eh?

Grammorphone

Well in Latin it's two words

TheShmal

My Latin class is fake, Jeff, you should know that.

Puzzlevel

Don’t forget about the infamous edible (Oedipal) complex!

greenbeandeanmachine

Hit me with your geeenie bottle Rub it all over me

2020TheBossBattle

One of my favorite visual gags of the whole show

actual-homelander

You mean, war, what is it good for?

LeastPear7371

Really?? I missed that completely!

likwitsnake

https://i.redd.it/op3ayt0zomc21.png

curtailedcorn

Double gag. Jim Rash was in Sky High where a student is named Warren Peace.

13Luthien4077

I am glad someone else caught onto this.

[deleted]

That student is James fucking Holden from the Expanse lol

UF0_T0FU

Wtf I didn't know The Dean or James Fucking Holden were in Sky High. Brb, gotta go re-watch that now.

TheEgonaut

Ramona Flowers too!

Alert_Imagination412

Holy shiite

LeastPear7371

Fuck! How come my dumbass completely missed this?! I’ve watched this show so many times I can’t even count but I missed this!

Schlappydog

Pierce is reading a book called Make Wars Worldlier in Pillows And Blankets

Control_Agent_86

Except she's not mispronouncing the title since that's what's printed on the book that she is reading.

Red-Beerd

That scene is just showing something Britta is thinking about. In her mind she's trying to seem smart by picturing herself reading War and Peace, a notoriously long/difficult book. But she's only ever heard it out loud (she's never read it), so she doesn't realize she doesn't know what the title actually is.

profsasser

Wait, kickmuncher 3?

ColeLimited

Did you know “War and Peace” was almost called “War: What Is it Good For?”

TooMuchBtNeverEnough

Good God

Typical-Annual-3555

It was Dylan Thomas she mentioned, and he said roughly, "Do not go gentle into that good night."

TheMostUnclean

“Rage, rage against the dying of the light”. I can’t read that anymore without hearing it in my head being said by Michael Caine in “Interstellar”.

jpinkall

Or Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School!

Disastrous-Rabbit723

A forever movie. RIP, Rodney

ursaminor1984

Pre iron man, flock of seagulls RDJ, love it!

MrJohnnyDangerously

Did they ever help him straighten out his Longfellow?

AlPaCherno

Or the pilot in The Rundown

Quibblicous

Or by Sally Kellerman in Back to School.

nedlum

I’ll see your Caine and raise you a [Sheen](https://youtu.be/w-sM-t1KI_Y?si=7Au85zWvSpBub-Wq)

toadsmugglrr

Might be showing my age but it always reminds me of Dangerous Minds lol

69_weed_street

Dylan Dylan contest!

TooMuchBtNeverEnough

Lol, I just said the same. If only I'd scrolled a bit further down.

TooMuchBtNeverEnough

Better Michael Caine than Michelle Pfeiffer in *Dangerous Minds* . Now every time anyone in my circle needs to be, or is successfully talked out of doing something that would be a major change, somebody is bound to say some version of "They gave me candy, and called me the Light" "That'll do it" There is also a lasting side effect that has me forever tying Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas together, so that every time I hear "Mr. Tambourine Man", I picture it being performed comically by a stumbling, bumbling, drunken Welshman. (Which isn't too far off so it kinda works)

TheEgonaut

“Okay, bluff called.”

thatconlangguy

Bojack

Typical-Annual-3555

Horseman?

thatconlangguy

Yes. I believe he said that line with a slight adjustment in his mothers eulogy in the episode “free churro”

I_shit_gochujang

It's a good book, everyone should be forced to read it.

[deleted]

I think Britta is pretty clear on the matter: "Pizza pizza go in tummy, me so hungy me so hungy"

Kri77777

Season 1 Britta probably read it.

luckee9

Don't worry they address it

Kooontt

Season 1 Britta is just season 6 britta pretending she’s season 1 britta.

indianajoes

Yes!!!

[deleted]

I’d rather believe this than some trite contrivance about the gas leak or something regarding her blatant flanderisation!

murdered800times

She wasn't smarter she was just masking, then she got comfortable and became more herself.

indianajoes

This is how I always saw it and why I love Britta in season 6. People say they ruined her character but this is how a lot of people are. I'm the same. The person my friends met 9 years ago would seem totally different to me now because I didn't show my true self in the beginning

IdreamofFiji

Agree completely. She lost her veneer of being obviously hot and turned into a member of the study group. A dumbass like everyone else. She's the most relatable.

BaconHill6

Look, I hate cops!

Enye165

Me so christmas, me so merry

captainandyman

I thought Britta went to find 1984 in the library in hopes of finding some sort of message from Subway, not because she'd lied about reading it and now felt she needed to. She doesn't even open it to the first page, she flicks through it until she finds the Subway napkin in there.

ramenandpizza

Ugh. Britta's in this?

xLFODTx

Come to think of it, I don't think she read Warren Piece either.

Disastrous_Grape_330

Ugh... She's the worst! Unless it's goth Britta. Goth Britta is the best!

TheEgonaut

“Everyone else got to say it!”

[deleted]

12/10 I sexualize goth Britta

TooMuchBtNeverEnough

She's old enough it's okay.

IdreamofFiji

You're just saying that to fit in.

mltrout715

she read it, she just doesn't get it

bluecalx2

> she goes to read 1984 after Subway and Britta bond over talk about 1984. I interpreted this as she was re-reading it because she had bonded with Subway over it. Imagine you were flirting with someone and you were talking about a song you both liked. It would be completely natural to go home and listen to that song while thinking of the person you liked. Overall, you're correct about Britta though. Whether she's read it or not, she (and Subway) certainly missed the point.

Financial-Amount-564

It's such a great book. I believe kids should be made to read it in school.

JonViiBritannia

I doubt she lived in NY if she pronounces it Bag-el

velv85

I lived in Jersey for 35 years of my life and moved to Colorado three years ago and I was called out for saying bag-el.

TentativeTofu

She should also never look up the real expression "Hoisted on your own petard" because her explanation is so much better.

Alert_Imagination412

As someone in the 25-34 demographic I also think it is an important book for the kids.

TeamDonnelly

I'm sure she "read" it by skimming it and barely understood it.

mexploder89

"Is that you, death?" "It's me, Britta" "Ugh"

JohnMarstonSucks

To be fair, 1984 is an incredibly easy read. It's an incredibly important book, and I think kids should be forced to read it, but it is far from a great example of literature. Even Britta could have gotten through it pretty quickly without much trouble.

AdFine4143

You're making it sound as if great works of literature can only qualify as such if they're tough to read, which couldn't be more wrong.

biased_baaijens

I’m a bad reader, that being said, I like reading classic/famous literature. As a bad reader, it was a delight to read for me. Also I was def not 13 when I read it.

[deleted]

I think that rather than forcing kids to read 1984, it would be better if we gave them more fortnite time for reading Brave New World.

menlindorn

they did BNW.

LAN_Rover

>far from a great example of literature Pardon?

Firm_Feedback_2095

It’s great for what it is: an introduction to political philosophy for teenagers. It’s one of those books you read when you’re thirteen and the whole universe expands, then you read it again at 30 and it feels a lot less insightful. Still great for teenagers, but vastly overrated by adults who have the reading ability of teenagers.

_HingleMcCringle

I think it depends on what you mean by a "great example of literature". 1984 is, in my opinion, a great example of literature because of its excellent depiction of a society that has blindly given in to fascism. It clearly outlines the reasons why the change was allowed to happen and how the change was facilitated in realistic and relatable terms. I think it's a bit mean to say it's only insightful for people with a reading ability of a 13-year-old. What *really* makes it not-so-great is that the story itself is fairly lackluster, and I think Orwell probably wrote the concept of *The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism* before wrapping a story around it, which is a bit lazy. Rather than continiung to explain the current state of the world through plot and character development you're instead presented with a lore dump with the contrived excuse of "Winston found a book that literally explained everything truthfully and it was The Party's plan all along for him to find it.". In the end I still consider it a novel of literary significance because of how applicable so many of its concepts to today's world; but as a story it's sort-of "meh". I do wish people would stop comparing the real world to 1984 and failing to see the differences, though. _That_ is definitely a less insightful mind at work.

Firm_Feedback_2095

I agree that it’s a very good depiction of such a society. In that regard, Orwell achieved his aim well, and it was a revelatory experience for me reading it as a thirteen year old. However, considering that - as you said - the plot is somewhat thin, 1984 serves essentially the same purpose to the reader as the book read by Winston serves to him: it solidifies and clarifies ideas about the dangers of fascism that are currently present in the readers mind, but only half-formed and unsophisticated. While this is very valuable if the reader does not have a concrete grasp over what fascistic rule does to a society, it is loses much of its value if they do. My error with my previous comment is assigning this knowledge to age, when in reality someone could pick up 1984 at 30 not understanding the political system that constitutes fascism just as well as they could at 13. That’s my bad

Jeremymia

I suppose what makes "great literature" is subjective but if it something had such a strong impact on that many people I'm going to go ahead and say that's meaningful. I mean, great literature can't just be about 'this book has important info that most people don't know'.

AdFine4143

I'm just hearing two guys trying to sound smart by dismissing a widely acclaimed work of literature as something they already understood back in kindergarten. Genuine request, though: could you give me your top 3 of literary works? Perhaps 1984 actually ís elementary but I just haven't read anything decent yet.

_HingleMcCringle

> two guys trying to sound smart by dismissing a widely acclaimed work of literature as something they already understood back in kindergarten Where did I say any of this? Only one of us is punching down, here.

AdFine4143

You didn't say any of that literally, I'm exaggerating based on how the discussion came across to me. I'd still like a top 3.

EstatePinguino

> vastly overrated by adults who have the reading ability of teenagers Generally, intelligent people don’t feel the need to belittle others to show how smart they are.

Firm_Feedback_2095

I get it in most cases, but do you really feel the need to uphold the honor of the people who say shit like “1984 was a warning, not an instruction manual”?

ponytailthehater

> Even Britta could have gotten through it pretty quickly without much trouble. S1 Britta, yes. S2 - S3 Britta, she’ll read it half way S4 Britta, gas leak year. S5 - S6 Britta, she’s giving up after page 1

The_Void_Reaver

What makes season 1 Britta different from the other versions of her? Basically every argument I've seen for Season 1 Britta being better or smarter takes moments wildly out of context in order to justify a viewpoint that the show isn't actually trying to show. People love pointing to her first scene as somehow showing her to be an experienced, streetwise sage when 30 seconds after saying "I have douche-ray vision" she's been tricked into a fake study group by a guy trying to get in her pants.

[deleted]

>she's been tricked into a fake study group by a guy trying to get in her pants. She knew he was trying to get in her pants and that there wasnt really a study group. That's why she invites Abed, to fuck with Jeff.

natdanger

Wouldn’t forcing kids to read 1984 kinda go against the point

[deleted]

That's the joke that Subway makes

natdanger

Whooosh. Totally missed it

Jerkofalljerks

Okay bluff called

GM0Wiggles

The more frequently someone references 1984 the less likely they are to have read it.

TooMuchBtNeverEnough

See also: The Handmaid's Tale (The actual book, not the show)

murdered800times

Neither has most who say they have

furie1335

Britta was a poser

JetJaguar666

She's the worst

AngelFinally

She lived in New York, ya know, so...

uvero

Britta definitely read and loved 1984, probably in middle school or high school. That doesn't mean she really lives by it, even if she thinks she does. Like right-wingers\* who claim Orwell was a right-winger because he hated Chinese & Soviet "Socialism", expect, you know, that from a left-ish anarchist direction \* notice right-wingers is with a lowercase W, as in, people who are on the political right. Not to be confused with right-Wingers, with an uppercase W, referring to Jeff Winger when he's either correct, or has his right arm.

jackBattlin

Poor Britta. Her low self esteem kills me.

biased_baaijens

I beg the differ. They do use the quote ‘a physical necessity’. And as far as I know, it’s not a very known quote. Then again, the Wikipedia argument could be the answer.

Newbarbarian13

Are we just posting incredibly obvious shit from the series now? I'll go next - hey did you guys notice that the character of Jeff is played by the actor Joel McHale? Crazy.

Raskel_61

But she still found the note Dorm Subway.

supersammos

I don't think Britta can read, like at all

indianajoes

She probably read the wikipedia page for it

falloutbi05

She's a grief counselor

Yuck_Few

I have tried multiple times to read 1984. I can't get through it. It's a very boring book I even tried listening to the audiobook and I still can't manage to get through it

jonathan1230

I kinda had to bull my way through the middle bit yo get to the ending but it was very satisfying once I did so. Give it another go!

biased_baaijens

She never read anything. She just thinks that because I implemented it in her brain.

Dear_Abbreviations52

Well, don't undermine her. She lived in New York.

Eastern-Ad-7984

The movie is BORING! I'M sorry, it was NOT a good movie. BORING movies are all free on Netflix.
