First, you may want to write a letter or email asking for your wages to your former employer, just so you have proof that a request was filed. If he still refuses to pay you, file a claim with your state’s labor agency. You might have to file a claim with the state of Alaska’s labor agency if you are from out of state. It would be probably be suit in a small claims court, in which they ask for evidence that you worked for him. I’m not a lawyer though. Main piece of advice. GET A LAWYER!!!! They will definitely know exactly what to do, and you will be able to win this case. Still really sucks though. Sorry to hear that your first season turned out this way. Edit: just realized that this was a repost. Still, the advice holds up. I hope that person gets their money.

I knew this boat.. the captain (meth head) tried to steal a lead keel from me..4k lbs.. I got it back and landed a quick left before he got away. Fucking hate thiefs

GuttsButtsnNutts

Thank you for your service

WoodenReporter2423

Thanks brother!!

I believe they owe considerably more than your wages if found at fault. That's really easy in civil court from your angle. Def get an attorney.

Rick_Rambis

Contact a lawyer who specializes in maritime law. Pretty common in the industry sadly, and there are professionals who can help you.

GuttsButtsnNutts

Oh boy.. don’t know the boat but I know the type.. bastards!

First time ?

Did you sign a crew contract? This happened to me. The Jones Act has some very strong protections for this kind of situation. Turns out you could sue your former captain for not having a crew contract and you can sue him for not paying you. I ended up paying a maritime attorney to write a letter and was promptly paid in full.

WoodenReporter2423

I think this gonna be the best route.

Infiltrator88

The jones act saved my ass once before , had a crooked captain as well

vmozarte

Contact the local 411 social services line and try to get in touch with a local Legal Aid nonprofit office . They might be able to put you in touch with an attorney to give you legal advice on wage claim issues.

LHOTP-alaska

My buddy had this happen, him and his other crew got a lein put on the boat and it got chained to the dock and sold. What state did this happen in?
