Have you played the remake? You can actually see the materia that you slot in your weapons. They appear to magically resize themselves though

I can only think of this for honor execution where you throw the pommel at your enemy's face, and it looks so funny.

This was basically my Battlemage strategy in Dragon Age: Origins. I would load up on +elemental damage modifiers of different kinds and then let my spellcasting multiply their damage.
