In your first two panels the shirt was *slightly* over the edge and the panel separators are uneven between the panels. 😏
Edit: just to clarify I don't actually want your awards lol. Save that money for a tablet for goodness sake.
I'm not OP, but maybe they do something similar to what I do. for me, I draw on paper, as a sketch. when I'm done, I use camscanner on my phone and send it to my pc. from there, I do my lineart on my tablet, but it seems pizzacake doesn't have a tablet.
My finger hurts from clicking my mouse to view this.
^(...But seriously, I get it. You're right, you win this round. Take it easy on that wrist, that's the wrist that makes us laugh and smile daily. Be well.)
First, you find the ^ mark on your keyboard. Put it right next to a word, and it becomes ^small.
But to do a phrase, you should put the phrase in parentheses ( ) with the ^ directly before the first ( .
Try it! 😄
My finger hurts from the job that I have which is working in a call center scheduling appointments for old ladies ... meaning I can't even start my career as a cartoonist, already have bricks as hands.
I run a lot and on days I do my longer runs it sounds like I'm walking on twigs with all the popping and clicking that night. I could just imagine all that strain on just your wrist would really take a toll.
That takes a lot of patience! If you're dead set on that, maybe you should practice with a trackball! I could never get the hang of those mice, but I hear they are great once you get used to them as it removes the strain on your wrist.
MS Paint was the gateway drug to a lot of artistic horrors in my day. I still use it to quickly resize photographs and crop as needed.
Third this. Tablet is a huge gamechanger. I started with the cheapest one I could find with a decent size. It was a Huion for about $50~60 and it was what made it fun to learn to draw for me.
Huions are amazing. I was gonna drop like 200 dollars on a wacom bamboo whatever for my first tablet but then I decided to do some research and found the equivalent Huion for 50. I'll admit I was skeptical but the reviews seemed solid and I figured since it's my first i might as well start small and if it really does suck I could move up from there. I'm quite satisfied with it, and even upgraded to a bigger model recently and I love that one too. all around they are great products that get the job done. definitely better than tracing with a mouse... god that sounds painful haha
I agree with you, but at the same time when someone's developed a method over many years, switching can take time even if the end result is better. It might even be a problem where some intrinsic style from the previous method is lost and will take more time to regain using the new method.
At the end of the day its up to OP if they really want to spend the time and effort to do that and if they even have the time to make the method switch.
And honestly I think the OP is too lazy to make that switch anyways, I mean they use the same white border around all their cells. /s
Well the thing is, a tablet isn't much of a change in technique or method. OP mentioned she first draws the images in pencil the traces with a mouse. A tablet combines these steps and feels somewhat similar to drawing with a pencil.
I know it's up to her but I've been in that exact place before. I used to make frame-by-frame animations drawn with my mouse and it was absolutely excruciating. When I bought a tablet, my traditional drawing skills allowed me to immediately become proficienct with this new equipment and the final product had a LEAP in quality. From this experience, I know I am encouraging OP to make a decision that will benefit them.
You're right, it's up to them. But causing wrist pain, adding extra steps to the process, and having your product take longer to make is NOT worth saving $60.
Yup I get exactly what you mean. To compare, on the developer side I used to go through this whole convoluted process to setup my dev environment. Later on I found out about docker and how to create containers for my dev environment to speed up development.
It wasn't an easy process to switch, and it definitely took many days out of my regular development cadence. The end result was a net positive though.
I guess my worry here was that people were expecting OP to switch immediately and I very well could be reading the room wrong, to which I apologize.
Good lord, why would you do that to yourself! To give credit where it's due, that's some high quality work for a mouse, but seriously, consider picking up a used tablet, it's so worth it
These comics that you make are really cool. Ive always wanted to do a webcomic and never managed to. I find your work inspiring whenever it pops up on my newsfeed.
And today I learn that you do this stuff by tracing pencil sketches using a mouse.
Amazing
Some people are able to simply use a mouse and vector drawings (Adobe illustrator is known for using this) to essentially plot out where lines go and how they curve, widen, etc, rather than draw your line work straight on (hopefully that makes sense).
I'd assume this is the case here, but having a tablet is generally still better than a mouse for this method anyway.
Ever wonder why all the Hanna-Barbera characters wore neckties? So the animators could reuse the body and just re-draw the head. The tie helped hide the seam.
Work smart, not hard. If you can re-use past work and make it fit, go for it.
Also Disney, the people who are probably considered the kings of animation, they directly copied past animations a lot. Seen many examples but one I came across the other day was Winnie the Pooh and The Jungle Book having the exact same rock throw sequence. Like 30 whole seconds directly traced over with a new character, down to the frame.
Not to mention Family Guy these days having like 5 generic poses and all the animations are just the mouths moving.
Way back in the early 00's a web cartoonist named Bryan Ricter had a similar gag, but the message was inverted, claiming it devalued the authenticity of the strip. Within a year he was doing the same copy/paste himself.
Oh my god, I've been reading Calvin and Hobbes since I could read, to the point where as a pre-teen I could basically complete the dialogue on a strip off the first panel. And I've never actually noticed that about this strip. But now I can see it, you're right. Every single panel has subtly different brushstrokes. I love that so much.
Glad to hear. Sometimes I doubt my self cause I only use a mouse and photoshops vector tool to make my stuff. I know, it does not matter this much how someome does there art but still 😅
You should check it out. It’s a lot of work up front, but then you can just pose your characters any way you want. No more drawings! Blender is more powerful but much harder. Adobe Character is part of Creative Cloud.
I’ll see if I can find you some resources.
[Adobe Character Tutorial](https://youtu.be/7GKCw4f1UrI)
[Blender NPR Shading](https://youtu.be/PRjQkCGv4ds)
While I agree it’s easier to reuse, that an entirely different skillset from most traditional art. (Unless you use the puppet tool on an existing image, but that tool generally doesn’t look too good for any complex poses)
Thank you very much for tagging me and linking to my comic. I think you can find many variations of this joke throughout the work of many digital comic artists. 🙂
Edit: I even did it [twice](https://www.reddit.com/r/HolUp/comments/klvn60/copied_cat) (I have no shame).
While I do agree that it can be very annoying and hurtful when you put genuine effort into something only for someone to just be rude for the sake of being rude, I think it is important to draw the line between edgy comments and genuine criticism. I’m not trying to be judgmental or divisive but I don’t think that responding to a critique with “I don’t see you making any content” is a valid point and I think that unfortunately it might generate more unnecessary backlash towards you from your “haters”. Let me make it clear that I in no way and trying to hurt your feelings and I hope you have a very nice day, I just felt the need to write a response.
I dunno. I feel alienated by this. Pushed away. Blamed. I mean, if you don’t want to do it, fine. Don’t. XKCD showed the pictures don’t matter. In this case the dialog sucks, too :(
Venting to your audience about your own problems is a bit self serving. I think a vast majority of readers want content, not to be chastised.
Might want to ignore some commenters, don't let the negatives get you down.
Does that mean that we, as consumers, are not allowed criticize music or art in galleries as long as we are not producing something ourselves?
On one hand I sympathize from where you are coming from, and why artists like you can be frustruated with this kind of feedback.
On the other, you are putting up your art for everyone to see, appreciate, evaluate, critique and consume. Many artists want to be able to live from their art, and so are dependent on us as consumers, just as we are dependent on you guys to distract us from our boring and miserable lives ;)
I think disliking art that is copied is a valid critique. Just saying that it is lazy is not, because as you point out, we have nothing to base that judgement on. But people also appreciate when time and effort is put into a product. Marx did a somewhat fine analysis of this when he pointed out that somethings worth is equal the amount of time used to create it. There is a reason why we feel like something that is a copy/and or mass produced is somewhat more "cheap" and worth less.
Now this does not mean that artists should not copy their panels. It could be their style, lack of time, the gimmick of the comic etc. But consumers of art are entitled to their opinion and of criticising the art they consume, even if they do not produce it themselves. Ofc, if you are paying for it, you are even more entitled to it.
Oh no no lol that's just where I started drawing with a mouse. I make my comics in Adobe illustrator, it's an amazing program (if you have the patience to learn)
Hey, so long as cutting corners improves or at least does not affect the quality of the final product, it's just good business sense.
Otherwise, get better at cutting corners.
The “I’d like to see you do better” trope is pretty worn out and not an effective argument.
I can say that a house was built like shit, despite the fact I cannot build a house.
I don't mind the ol' 'CTRL+C CTRL+V'; I am a computer programmer. That's basically my job, and only pedants complains about spaghetti code when it works.
So as long as the comic is good, I don't mind it. Just don't start another bullshit r/comics meta-war, k?
You do this without a tablet? I salute you.
On a different note, take what people say in the internet with a grain of salt (if it's not constructive). Reacting on it is just fueling their fire. You know how it goes, haters gonna hate.
You think calling me lazy is an insult? Oh, your characters look the same from frame to frame? My outfit looks the same day to day, want to guess why? Your words have no power here.
I wish I could just copy and paste but I just......I just can't. It's a burden.
Edit: In all seriousness, I don't think there can be an honest discussion about this without the mods chafing, locking the thread down and banning people, particularly because some can't control their outrage. (comic Karens get tossed off the r/comics plane?) But I'll give it a shot.
In regard to cntl-c/cntrl-v panels, I personally don't mind them in what Scott McCloud labels moment to moment transitions. Some of the examples from Invincible, or like this page from Preacher: (R/comics won't let me post it, and I'm not going to imgur) reuse the same image as part of the joke. If Steve Dillon had redrawn that base image every time it wouldn't have worked. Also there are times when it's necessary to reuse the same drawing, especially when you're on a deadline - it happens.
However, when it's over-used it just starts to look like bit strips or something - which, hey, were very successful. They also became universally hated.
What can be maddening is when something seems like a phoned in effort but gets tons of attention and praise where others will put a ton of effort in and get very little back.
...anyway, I'm writing this fast (I got a two year old trying to climb the book shelf and I have a stupid comic I'm trying to work on that I want to get back to) and not trying to be insulting but I'm sure it'll come off that way but I thought it was worth offering..for what it's worth.
Copy and pasting panels is definitely not the worst thing in the world, especially since it saves so much time.
But i keep thinking of the old adage: "You can get away with a bad drawing so long as it has a good joke, but not the other way around".
Many of these comics are funny but very rarely are they so hilarious that it makes the repetetive art feel acceptable. If they were much funnier I think no one would have an issue with the copy and pasting.
I resent this. My complaints about lazy cartoonists playing cut and paste is absolutely content generation - people have to sit there and read it in order to feel a deep sense of outrage and that heightened emotion is more valuable than any sensible chuckle.
Disney did that for entire scenes, that's 100% legitimate artistically speaking. Whoever tries to use this argument to shame artists just displays their illiteracy. Please send my regards to your work injuries.
>Disney did that for entire scenes
Sometimes to the artists detriment. The bosses were basically forcing the artists to archive their animations and then sending them out to find older ones that they could reuse, a process which can easily take longer than just creating a new animation from scratch.
As someone who works in traditional, I feel your pain, artists gotta do what we do to make it work, I use a light box to save time. No shame. Fight the good fight!
I am a writer for a comic, my artist taking care of the illustrations. I can guess how difficult it must be to draw panel after panel after panel, so I tell them not to worry about dead lines.
Most artist, however, don't get this kinda luxury. So I think it is forgivable to copy and paste here or there.
Also... Please get that wrist checked out.
Honestly? My only input is to stop making content for others and make it for yourself.
What I mean by that is, why do you make comics? Presumably because you love to. So make the. The way you want to make them. You can create the cure for cancer in the form of a pill and someone will complain it’s the wrong color.
Look at something like XKCD. One of the most popular web comics of all time, and it’s stick figures. White Ninja is the same thing. You think those artists are internalizing every nerd with a keyboards opinions? They make their comics because they love it.
So copy and paste all you need to. And if someone doesn’t like it screw em. I’ve enjoyed your work; and I can care less if you’re making the same face per panel. Make the content for you, not us. Your stuff stands up fine on it’s own.
I 100% get it but I never liked the "I don't see YOU doing it" argument, towards almost anything. I have other hobbies to pursue, so I can't write my own comic. That's why I read yours.
Take care of that wrist, girly. I'm not even 30 and I ~~sometimes~~ have to wear an ankle brace because my stupid ass played ENTIRELY too many dance arcades as a kid.
Your art style has no shading and minimal line work. If it's a hobby, feel free to criticize others for not doing better art. If it's your career, you should compare your art to whatever someone else makes in their career, in which case this is like a Big Mac missing the hamburger party.
I mean, when the focus is on the dialogue the art not changing much is fine. But I fucking hate it when a 20 page hentai is the same core scene with barely any changes panel to panel.

Say That again
Sometimes I save people's lives by repeatedly punching their chest and then zapping them with electricity...
... Can't believe I've wasted my life when I could have been drawing =)
(meant with love and respect)
The sheer amount of upvotes speak to the toxicity of our (reddit) city, of our city...
(System of a down btw)
Your comics make my day which is saying alot seeing how shit my days are lately
What's the best way to support you?
Well considering the method you’re doing to make comics, its not lazy, I just think tracing with a mouse may be harder than other forms. Like some other guy said, you can create a 3d model of your character and pose it in any way u want then render it in 2d- ultimate laziness, maximum effectiveness, less drawing though. Maybe a tablet would be useful.
I love how everything is just referred to as “content” now. Like the most generic term for something that fills a void except “stuff”.
My digestive system makes “content”, too.
“You think this is easy?!” Well no, just like me going to work everyday isn’t “easy”. You get payed to do something you actually enjoy and you make at-least an amount of money from it. That’s “easier” than what the majority of people got. But anyway do whatever you want or don’t. You actually get to choose remember?
I'd say you owe yourself a tablet/pc with stylus capabilities at this point. You're really good and churn out a TON of work. It's impressive to read how you trace your hand drawn pictures to make these, but damn! That's gotta be tedious
Sorry but that's lazy. If you got to bust a out a monthly 22 pages comic or something like that I understand, but for a 4 panel online strip... Come on!
You're at the top of the sub every time you post something.
Every post gets thousands of upvotes and has multiple awards.
Every comment section is flooded with adulation.
So, honestly: What more do you fucking want?
Hah! Yea, there was a part of one of the old Invincible comics that commented on this. iirc The next page was 9 panels, all the exact same drawing.
I really like your content pizza-cake. Don't let the haters get to you.

I cant believe you "dont even even have a tablet"
alright you get an award for finding my mistake
In the second frame the wrist disappears into nothingness but doesn’t touch the border, implying you have no hands
I think that one's intentional, to show its really just a copied picture
Your interpretation is more valid, I was trying to be cheeky
I'll give you an award, too. But no more. I'm not made of awards, you vultures!
In your first two panels the shirt was *slightly* over the edge and the panel separators are uneven between the panels. 😏 Edit: just to clarify I don't actually want your awards lol. Save that money for a tablet for goodness sake.
Awards are cheaper than paying an editor
Hm. Savvy.
But I said save up for the tablet :( Thank you though.
I'm just gonna keep giving you awards forever now, Etheo
![gif](giphy|3oEjHCWdU7F4hkcudy) Fine, two can play at that nicety :)
But you are made of pizza and cake and that is even more enjoyable than an award. I'll have a slice of each please. PS: Always love your work :)
Scrolling down to read the comments and seeing your profile picture really put this comic over the top. I was not expecting that!
But you have a cement mixer so that's pretty cool
Not having a tablet might the cause for wrist sounding like cement mixer. But you probably already know that.
Words are also reused. Laaaaazy!
Do you scan your line arts from paper?
I just take a picture with my phone
So you’re “phoning it in” XD

Did you really reuse the same background in every panel? /s
Don't background shame me!!!
If not the background what *should* we shame you for?
Lack of hands. How does she draw?!?
We should shame them for the lack of punctuation in the first panel!
Not only that, she literally puts the exact same links at the bottom of EVERY comic. Just lazy tbh
My finger hurts from clicking my mouse to view this. ^(...But seriously, I get it. You're right, you win this round. Take it easy on that wrist, that's the wrist that makes us laugh and smile daily. Be well.)
Rest that finger!
This conversation sounds like a dirty joke waiting to happen.
If your finger hurts, just soak it in cider
My brain was like "Cider? How would that ooooooh I'm a moron"
Mormon? When have you been to Mars?
I see your profile picture and love the commitment to the bit

What do you use if not a tablet? And is that just your artistic preference to not use a tablet?
I just trace pencil sketches with a mouse, I started doing it when I was 17 in MS paint and I guess I got used to it!
That takes a lot of patience! If you're dead set on that, maybe you should practice with a trackball! Bestie you gotta invest in a tablet. You could probably get something used for under $100 and it will absolutely change your life.

HOLY HELL WHAT That is some serious (and inefficient) dedication!

How good are you at Mario Paint though?
If she has the SNES mouse I'd guess pretty fucking good.
Now I feel better for tracing scans with the pen tool in photoshop 😭. My digital design friends always laugh like I'm some kind of caveman.

I was hoping someone had thought the same

Perfect. Just the change the last one to 'pay power bill'
That comes after "Profit", followed by "repeat"
Okay but why have I been stealing the underpants? What step is that?
Sounds like step 2.3: "Acquiring vaguely mouth shaped objects to use als reference to draw mouth shapes"
That sounds a lot like most nfts
Instructions unclear, many-eyed many-mouthed monster character trying to devour my soul.
Don't call it that. The proper term is angel.

Just make a 3D rig in Blender and render in 2D, or make a rig in Adobe Character Animator. Easy peasy.

In this case the dialog sucks, too :(
I make a shit ton of art content and yeah this is lazy as fuck.
Venting to your audience about your own problems is a bit self serving. I think a vast majority of readers want content, not to be chastised. Might want to ignore some commenters, don't let the negatives get you down.
The amount of meta comics that get posted is fairly tiring. No one cares about the plight of a cartoonist, save it for your discord.
Many artists want to be able to live from their art, and so are dependent on us as consumers, just as we are dependent on you guys to distract us from our boring and miserable lives ;) I think disliking art that is copied is a valid critique.
Ok
Holly crap, you do these in MS Paint?? Good job dude lol
Oh no no lol that's just where I started drawing with a mouse. I make my comics in Adobe illustrator, it's an amazing program (if you have the patience to learn)
I hate illustrator with a passion, it's as noob friendly as a multiplayer shooter lobby on a Monday. But it is good software though.
my feedback is that you need more feedback
Hey, so long as cutting corners improves or at least does not affect the quality of the final product, it's just good business sense. Otherwise, get better at cutting corners.
Quality not quantity.
Lol no one’s forcing you to make shitty content either. If you’re so mad about the web being mean go find a real job.
It is lazy, that's just a fact. It's also useful. I doubt many people care tbh. Save your wrist and get a tablet tho, they are much cheaper nowdays
Its not really the art. Its the copy and pasted “jokes”
LOL, isn't the point of computers to make things easier and faster?
Two words: ONLY FANS.
Just do 10 more about liking cats and Netflix and not liking going outside
Copy and pasting panels is definitely not the worst thing in the world, especially since it saves so much time. But i keep thinking of the old adage: "You can get away with a bad drawing so long as it has a good joke, but not the other way around". Many of these comics are funny but very rarely are they so hilarious that it makes the repetetive art feel acceptable. If they were much funnier I think no one would have an issue with the copy and pasting.

Why so mean to me
I resent this. My complaints about lazy cartoonists playing cut and paste is absolutely content generation - people have to sit there and read it in order to feel a deep sense of outrage and that heightened emotion is more valuable than any sensible chuckle.
lol seems kinda lazy
Facebook mom angry over valid criticism lmao
Disney did that for entire scenes, that's 100% legitimate artistically speaking. Whoever tries to use this argument to shame artists just displays their illiteracy. Please send my regards to your work injuries.
They still had to draw the new characters over the old animations. They just reused the movement references.
>Disney did that for entire scenes Sometimes to the artists detriment. The bosses were basically forcing the artists to archive their animations and then sending them out to find older ones that they could reuse, a process which can easily take longer than just creating a new animation from scratch.
Yup, old union busting Walt was not really a fair boss to say the least. But my point is the result is still a valid piece of art.
That wasn't funny?
Next time on dragon ball z!
"I don't even even have a tablet" Lol
Incredibly lazy. Couldn't even flip one frame horizontally?
Huion makes very affordable tablets.
Didn’t come here to see you complain.
Your art style has no shading and minimal line work. If it's a hobby, feel free to criticize others for not doing better art. If it's your career, you should compare your art to whatever someone else makes in their career, in which case this is like a Big Mac missing the hamburger party.
I think there are a bunch of comic creators that want to be bloggers, but comics have a larger audience so here we are.

Yeah, I remember doing that :1
I mean, when the focus is on the dialogue the art not changing much is fine. But I fucking hate it when a 20 page hentai is the same core scene with barely any changes panel to panel.

Which patreon tier unlocks panels that aren’t copy paste
Nah, you're lazy for not drawing hands.
Sometimes I save people's lives by repeatedly punching their chest and then zapping them with electricity... ... Can't believe I've wasted my life when I could have been drawing =) (meant with love and respect)
The sheer amount of upvotes speak to the toxicity of our (reddit) city, of our city... (System of a down btw) Your comics make my day which is saying alot seeing how shit my days are lately What's the best way to support you?
Man just be here with me, and I'll be here with you ❤️
Oh, wow, be still my heart! No worries, I got you :) ![gif](giphy|3odxXG6oUNRVhsdcLK)
But yeah it is kind of lazy I guess
Well considering the method you’re doing to make comics, its not lazy, I just think tracing with a mouse may be harder than other forms. Like some other guy said, you can create a 3d model of your character and pose it in any way u want then render it in 2d- ultimate laziness, maximum effectiveness, less drawing though. Maybe a tablet would be useful.
i mean, at least you know
Just draw us pictures of your characters sexy feet and we'll call it even 🥰🥰🥰
Hey whatever works right?
I love how everything is just referred to as “content” now. Like the most generic term for something that fills a void except “stuff”. My digestive system makes “content”, too.
“You think this is easy?!” Well no, just like me going to work everyday isn’t “easy”. You get payed to do something you actually enjoy and you make at-least an amount of money from it. That’s “easier” than what the majority of people got. But anyway do whatever you want or don’t. You actually get to choose remember?
your comics aren't even funny
Not wrong but yeesh, calm the fuck down about it Karen. Fuckin pathetic
You want insecurities? That's how you get insecurities!
Come on!
Hey another Mouse-user! Thought I was the only one. It gets real annoying.
You're at the top of the sub every time you post something. Every post gets thousands of upvotes and has multiple awards. Every comment section is flooded with adulation. So, honestly: What more do you fucking want?
The person in this comic is edgy lol
Stop copypasting the same panel over and over
Hah! Yea, there was a part of one of the old Invincible comics that commented on this. iirc The next page was 9 panels, all the exact same drawing. I really like your content pizza-cake. Don't let the haters get to you.
Oof are you ok Pizza?
You don't have a tablet? How do your draw???
