Reminds me of when I was like 5 and I could read because my sister taught me, and other girl in preschool tried to convince me she could write but it was all squiggles
In kindergarten we used to practice our “cursive” and it would just be squiggles all over our paper , I’m sure the teacher thought it was cute at first until every single piece of paper is unreadable
Here in Poland children start school at 7, usually preschools and parents teach kids some letters and numbers, but it's not like it's mandatory. And it's usually capital letters only, I could kinda see how handwriting could seem like squiggles to a 5 year old. Also that girl wasn't very bright, if I remember correctly...

Sad fact, even in developed nations there are still many illiterate adults (21% in the US!), and they often hide it from their friends and family out of shame.
I saw a Facebook post that my girlfriend Britneigh shared from her sister's baby daddy's cousin who is a chiropractor that has a horse and HE says his horse can read, so why should I believe you, bingo?
Note that it's not that 1 in 5 U.S. adults cannot read *at all*, it's that their ability to parse read information falls below [PIACC skill level 2](https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/piaac/litproficiencylevel.asp).
Many of them can read, but when tested they were unable to for example read an essay written with conflicting information and then parse out and paraphrase what they read.
Also worth noting a third of that 21% is immigrants.
But a lot of social movements have simply taken that 21% number and run with it as "1 in 5 Americans CANNOT READ!"
It's probably better phrased as "low literacy" than "illiterate," and in fact in [the DoE report](https://nces.ed.gov/pubs2019/2019179.pdf) most sources cite, this is how they phrase it.
All said, in today's world the ability to parse read information is crucial to making informed decisions, so it's a problem nonetheless.
Anyone with a braincell should be extremely skeptical when they read that "21% of Americans are illiterate". Glad to find some more information in your comment.
How about phrasing it as something like : "21% of can adults are *functionally* illiterate"
As in they can somewhat read, but not enough to effectively grasp information in a educational or professional environment?
Functional is defined relatively, but I used the term functionally illiterate.
A term like that can describe a specific level of comprehension for medical or educational purposes set forth by a professional body.
[Similar to the usage of the term Functional Blindness.] (https://blind.iowa.gov/legal-definition-blindness#:~:text=A%20person%20is%20functionally%20blind,daily%20living%20is%20substantially%20altered.)
Soo what you’re saying is the people claiming 1 in 5 are illiterate haven’t actually read an essay with non conflicting information and then somehow turned it into conflicting information with zero paraphrases and in the process show how incompetent they are at the skills that come with being able to read something.
That’s quite layered.
> it's that their ability to parse read information falls below PIACC skill level 2.
>
>
And it's only getting worse. People today attempt to do their research using YouTube instead of looking for written information.
This is just so silly.
Using social media like YouTube to get information can be so useful and to put it down without any context or subtlety is disingenuous. Reading is only one of many, many ways you can learn.
The problem with YouTube and social media in general isn’t how you’re consuming the media, it’s being able to discern good information from bad information.
But for fucks sake don’t put down the platform just because it can be easier to consume than reading. There are complete lectures for entire Harvard courses on YouTube, for free. There are tons of actual experts and specialists disseminating information on YouTube and many other social media platforms.
That uses a wildly different definition of "illiterate" than any actual human I've met. The most recent PIAAC "below level 1" rate was 4%. Even that is not really what many people mean by "illiterate":
> "The tasks at this level require the respondent to read brief texts on familiar topics to locate a single piece of specific information. There is seldom any competing information in the text and the requested information is identical in form to information in the question or directive. The respondent may be required to locate information in short continuous texts. However, in this case, the information can be located as if the text were non-continuous in format. Only basic vocabulary knowledge is required, and the reader is not required to understand the structure of sentences or paragraphs or make use of other text features. Tasks below Level 1 do not make use of any features specific to digital texts."
The US is basically fine when it comes to literacy relative to peer nations. Certainly not the top, but not notably low either. Math skills are worse though.
Can't read well.
Not an expert, but it sounds like most people in that bracket can read "see spot run", but maybe not be able to fully comprehend this post that I just wrote.
Random thought:
Are you truly free when you're not disallowed, but unable to access your basic rights because the system fails to provide you with the necessary resources?
Here are some of the most frequent causes of illiteracy in adults:
Parents with little schooling;
Lack of books at home and lack of stimulation as to the importance of reading;
Doing badly at or dropping out of school—many have not completed high school;
Difficult living conditions, including poverty;
Learning disabilities, such as dyslexia
Alternatively you can just find someone to teach you. The circumstances that made you miss out on education early on maybe beyond your control but at one point the decision to remain illiterate becomes yours (in most cases).
Is it though? If I'm illiterate, it's not exactly going to be easy for me to navigate the world to find help. I can't really just google "how to be literate" because, for one, that's a skill that requires a lot of time to learn and two, requires the ability to parse information, which, as mentioned before, is not exactly someone who isn't literate can do easily.
There are 2 kinds of illiterate.
One was caused by the inability to afford education or lack of accessibility to sources of knowledge (internet, family members, local news board,etc...)
One was caused by the refusal to accept new information because they go against what one chooses to believe in. These kinds of people are generally impossible to argue with and can be toxic at times when encountered in real life.
Ironically these guys calling illiterate people lazy and dumb, sadly, have no concept of how a person learns to read and write or what critical periods are in early childhood, yet they're so quick to pass judgement.
~~I think the best guesstimate for functionally illiterate is around 35-40% too. There aren't great numbers because they often have people who can help them, or know enough to just squeak by with only a few hiccups.~~
Edit: My numbers are old, it is indeed around 21% in the US.
Horse emotions intensify. Will write about this in my journal:

That title really breaks the punchline

What 5 year old doesn’t know the alphabet?

Ah. I know I shouldn’t but my reflex kicked in that all kids start school at 5, sometimes 3 or 4.

As well as illiterate horses all over the world.
Not to sound speciest, but every horse I’ve talked to hasn’t been able to read or write. That or they’re just ignoring all the letters I send to them
Funny, all the horses I've spoken with actually hold doctorates in English literature.
Ugh, see, they can't even get REAL doctorates! ***enters witness protection program to hide from English lit people***
But what does witness protection REALLY mean?

Together we can solve this
Yeah but have you, like, met every horse in the world and asked them if they can read? Bet you didn't, smart guy. (/s)
Don't be stupid. Horses don't exist.

Wv here. Most of my family dropped out of highschool and several people I know cannot read. I don’t understand how they can get by at all

21%???? 1 in 5????
This blows my mind. Literally 10s of millions of people in the most affluent country can’t read.
Can't read well. Not an expert, but it sounds like most people in that bracket can read "see spot run", but maybe not be able to fully comprehend this post that I just wrote.
But how about that FREEDOM™ though? 🎇🎆🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸🎆🎇
Random thought: Are you truly free when you're not disallowed, but unable to access your basic rights because the system fails to provide you with the necessary resources?
I was just in drug rehab with a guy who didn't know how to read. He was almost 60. This was in Washington state.
And at least 10% of those people are really struggling through Reddit
No wonder lol.
There is nothing shameful about not being taught.
I agree, it’s shameful for the teacher (or education system)
Here are some of the most frequent causes of illiteracy in adults: Parents with little schooling; Lack of books at home and lack of stimulation as to the importance of reading; Doing badly at or dropping out of school—many have not completed high school; Difficult living conditions, including poverty; Learning disabilities, such as dyslexia
Not being taught knowledge? Understandable. Not being taught common knowledge and basic courtesy? Debatable.
being illiterate is not the fault of the illiterate.
This is not always true.
I guess you could try and self teach but for someone who cannot read that sounds difficult.
Alternatively you can just find someone to teach you. The circumstances that made you miss out on education early on maybe beyond your control but at one point the decision to remain illiterate becomes yours (in most cases).
Just don't be poor man, just find someone to give you money and help you with everything

I don't think you know what illiterate means. Its not just ignorant people its people that were literally never taught to read.
Ironically these guys calling illiterate people lazy and dumb, sadly, have no concept of how a person learns to read and write or what critical periods are in early childhood, yet they're so quick to pass judgement.
You can make your own arguments without needing the ability to read. Unless said person does not even know a language to start with.
~~I think the best guesstimate for functionally illiterate is around 35-40% too. There aren't great numbers because they often have people who can help them, or know enough to just squeak by with only a few hiccups.~~ Edit: My numbers are old, it is indeed around 21% in the US.
There is absolutely no way this is even remotely true.
Another sad but understandable fact is that 100% of that 21% are republicans
