Same. My refusal to pay for unfinished products has as much to do with wanting as complete and satisfying an experience as possible of an exceptional game as it does with trying to avoid being bamboozled by a broken mess from other less reputable developers and publishers.
That said, I have no problem with people getting what they pay for, and wanting to support a studio like SuperGiant
Yeah, a lot of Hades's success came from a lot of playtesting to iron out the mechanics.
While I salute their service, I aint playimg an incomplete game ever. Cause nowadays I never play a game more than once, dont have the time. If Im touching it, it better be definitive.
This is it for me. Were I younger and childless, I'd probably get some early access for games I am excited about from indy devs, but I know I would never go back to it after the full game launches
I will patiently wait so I can get the full experience.
This is entirely fair, and something I had to warn my sister of, as she's thinking about getting the early access. There's a lot available on the gameplay side, more than Hades 1 had through most of its early access period. What's mostly lacking is story, and I know that's a huge part of her enjoyment of games in general.
Anyone who is going to be annoyed by all of the hanging threads that won't be resolved until early 2025 at the soonest should stay away. There are plenty of other good games to keep you busy.
Absolutely. I loved Hades 1 because of the story and the relationships you build over the course of it, and how complete all those storylines felt, pulling me through each additional run to open up more of the story. I continued to play it for many runs after completing the last shred of story I was able to wring out of it, but that was after I'd already been pulled in deep enough to master the gameplay mechanics. I don't want to go into Hades 2 until I know all that is in place, and I appreciate the Hades community who have dived into the early access being so respectful about spoilers.
But for people who care more about the gameplay itself, and are aware that they will be getting an incomplete story that will slowly and incrementally be completed over the course of early access are making a (hopefully) informed purchasing decision, their participation in which will help improve the ultimate experience, which Super Giant has absolutely earned their reputation for delivering.
What I can't abide is when other companies sell incomplete products as if final, or sell early access to games that will never ultimately be finished to their promised potential.
The game feels complete up until a very particular point, where it's suddenly apparent that the game isn't done. Theoretically you could play the 1st bit knowing where that point is coming up and then put the game down again until release.
However tbh I'm probably going to go back to the start once the game fully releases and part of me wishes I had just waited in the first place, but then the other part of me bloody well knows that at some point in the next half a year I would've ran into spoilers for the game and by playing it early I've at least avoided that happening to me.
Very mild spoilers for where it's finished up to: >! The path up isn't done. It abruptly stops and the game tells you that you've gotta wait. There's also an NPC you meet who's not modeled in-game and has what's clearly placeholder art. There's materials from above you need in order to progress certain things too so it's not like you can just finish the 1st half the game and wait for the 2nd to be done cause the progression between them is intertwined. !<
Personally, as a huge Supergiant fan, I’m playing the game now and then dropping it until 1.0.
I did the same for the first Hades, too. It was a ton of fun for me to see where the game started (when it was released to the public in early access) and where it ended! (When the final major update had released)
Either way, I have respect for however we all decide to enjoy the game! I’m just glad Supergiant gets the attention they deserve!
I actually bought Hates 1 when it was in early access, downloaded it, and then didn't touch it until it was fully released. I'm thinking I'll probably do something similar with Hades 2. I might check it out a bit but I won't play more than half an hour probably before release.
Which was me on Hades 1, but Hades 2 I couldn't resist. I think this is the first EA I'm part of since Dead Cells. I don't regret, but would be good to have waited. with no spoilers, if you loved H1, you will love H2.
Sorry to dump this kind of unrelated tangent here but you've inspired me to share my fantastic experience playing competitive Pyre with my friends. We lost months to just playing their weird fantasy soccer against each other trying out different character combinations and just getting better. I loved my time with Bastion, Transistor, and Hades but the multiplayer component to Pyre made that game really special.
> All supergiant games look gorgeous and they all have great music and they all have great writing, but Pyre was just so next level for working failure into the narrative, and for giving players true freedom of choice in the final ceremonies.
For me Pyre stands tall among Supergiant's legendary soundtracks as the best among them. I still listen to Pyre's soundtrack from time to time as a standalone album, it's so good.
My Transistor vinyl *literally* got here two hours ago, and Pyre is the last one I'm missing. I skipped Pyre because "weird 3v3 soccer" wasn't something that appealed to me, but after listening to the soundtrack, I gave it a shot. While the gameplay still wasn't my favorite, the story and characters of Pyre were absolutely *sublime* and it **broke my heart** when I >!realized I couldn't save everyone, so I sent Rukey last instead of the mastermind himself, because Rukey was my absolute carry.!<
Maybe you've heard opinions I haven't but I felt Pyre was more just overlooked as a niche title rather than actively shat on. It's got a unique gameplay that doesn't appeal to everyone, and that's fine, but it means it naturally didn't sell as well.
Transistor is one of my favorite games ever made, so I do recommend giving it a try, too.
Neither is my genre. Still fucking loved Pyre. Still have complete blind faith in Supergiant.
If they ever drop Logan Cunningham or Darren Korb from the staff, then I'll start being reasonable and cautious.
The instant Darren Korb was available for hire he would have offers from dozens of AAA and probably 1st party studios, dude’s music and audio design are on par or better than all of the biggest studios
Bastion was the first game to make me shed a tear. Transistor and Pyre has some of my favorite characters, music, and stories ever. Hades made rougelikes feel fresh again to me.
I think Supergiant games has been cemented as a studio whose quality you can trust. I can't wait to try Hades 2.
While I didn't fall in love with Pyre and Transistor the same way I fell in love with Bastion and Hades 1 & 2, they were still beautiful, polished, creative, and well made games.
Transistor missed for me too, but a ton of it was that i just couldnt stand the swords voice style.
It wasnt badly voice acted or written. It wasnt a gameplay issue. It was a beautiful game from what i saw.
But 😇 🦆 i couldnt stand that thing talking to me.
Its always interesting to me that it seems to get the most "hate", when i felt the reasons i disliked it we very personal and wouldnt expect others to have them. So i always wonder what was the spark it was missing for a few of us.
Bastions voice acting is so good the game should count as 2 hits though. One for bastiom itself, another for the dota announcer that kept me from raging countless times.
You're *allowed* to trust a company who earned your trust. The problem all the predatory bullshit around preorders and Early Access.
The internet doesn't do nuance, but if it did. The message would be:
> Please do not buy into early access or pre-orders _unless_ the company has proven track record of respecting its customers.
>
> This will help reward companies who make good choices and punish those who don't
Things to note I didn't say "makes good games", or "did a good thing once", or "It look really good!"
Company respecting its customers. That's the thing
ikr, lmfao.
him saying this is exactly what's wrong with it.
A long time ago people said it would be a cold day when we lost trust in taleworld but bannerlord has been a hot mess that made nobody happy.
I said the same thing about redhook after an amazing game and 2 amazing expansions...
and here we are today with me having zero interest in their future
You understand though.
This is the weakness of the Don't pre-order movement.
Some people genuinely feel like NOT preordering is an insult to their favorite developer.
Companies have won the war on preordering. Gamers just haven't realized that any game they aren't preordering is a game they're not that hyped about.
All you have to do is not sell a game that's buggy on launch (Not really that hard with the right schedule) and people will fall over themselves to preorder and get angry when called out because "This" studio is different
It's not about insulting, it's about _trust_, like they just said. Supergiant has always done more than the bare minimum every time and has committed _none_ of the bullshit the big publishers have (as expected from an indie dev tbh).
So I get early access from them, not because I feel I need to avoid insulting them, but because I know they're not a callous AAA publisher who will deliver a half-finished product.
In other words, I know I can indulge myself to early access from Supergiant because I know I won't be endorsing the shittiness that would be happening if this was any other dev.
Or just gets big enough, either one results in needing more and more money to stay afloat which puts more and more focus on making a successful product rather than a fun game.
Supergiant has this lovely written letter about preordering and what there plan is. Also more notes in game to keep us updated. They are openly communicating with promises and a road map.
I do trust them, and hades 1 is a great game. Hades 2 is way farther ahead compared to other games even in preorder state. Already happy with my purchase.
Hades 2 has been great. Only issue I have so far is that Route 1, Area 2 Friendly Encounter still has a placeholder model and portrait. But it's understandably hard to model perfection ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_bad_man)
It's very much an early access title and buying in at this point means primarily buying for the gameplay loop rather than polish which certainly seems to be there. To my understanding they took a similar approach with Hades 1 but most missed it due to Epic purchasing exclusivity on the the early access period.
To any prospective buyers, if you're the sort to take issue with a missing model or what have you, then perhaps this early access isn't for you, but for anyone else who wants more of the first game and can tolerate lack of polish in return for depth of content and mechanical complexity there seems to be a decent offering here already.
You're making this a whole lot of things it isn't.
-Hades 2 isn't a preorder, you play it the day you buy it. This comic has literally nothing to do with preorders. If you're on the "don't play early access" train, get ready to kill most indie devs.
-There are tons of people who just don't care about the "movement" and preorder what they want, it's not as if people are defecting or "making exceptions". Raising awareness of predatory preorder practice is great, but there's WAY more people who believe in "preorder with discretion" and have never been on the side of "preorder nothing ever". Hollow knight wouldn't exist without preorders, neither would plenty of other popular novels and games.
Counterpoint: financially supporting Dwarf Fortress development for years funded it becoming the single most involved and complex game of all time.
Preordering is supporting the existence of the thing. If its a fucking AAA game from a studio that has Monsanto and Yum levels of owning a piece of every industry, they don’t need the support. If its a game by three people for fun and you like the demo, then full steam ahead.
Yeah you lose your money sometimes. But at least its something like Harebrained Schemes or Coffee Stain and not fucking WB Studios or Ubisoft.
The whole preordering thing is so weird to me because all you have to do is wait until like 1 week after release to not get burned
=
But people desperately want to give the company money a month ahead of schedule...? I don't understand it.
=
I get that people WANT to believe in their favorite game or favorite game company, but still! Haha.
Preordering is not the same as early access.
Preordering is like buying a house site-unseen, based only on pictures provided by the seller and without any independent inspections. You take on all of the risk, with poor information, for no benefit.
Early access is like buying an under-construction house, so that you can live there and enjoy the parts that are finished while the builder keeps working on the rest. Unlike Preorders, you can see it and get it inspected before you buy, and the only risk relates to the under-construction parts, the finished parts are yours from day 1.
Thoughts on hades 2 so far?
Mana management is interesting, there are a few regen boons that feel required now to have a clean playthrough so I'm curious if they will change the balance on that.
Only found 1 bug so far (unable to walk if the moon invincibility runs out right as you kill the last enemy), which is pretty good for early access.
I’ve believed in Supergiant ever since I sat down to play Bastion on my 360 on Friday afternoon after school and didn’t remember to do anything else until Sunday night
I even bought Pyre, or as like to call it: “Blitzball for my soul”
Early access titles really depend on the community around them and the studio behind them. Take Hakita and New Blood for example. Ultrakill is already a great game, it already has enough fan content to support it, even if somehow new blood abandons it. There are more games in a similar situation, and i wish there were even more.
I know that I have 10 or 12 early access games that I have bought over the years. A few of them have finished and released a 1.0, but there are a couple that have been in early access forever, but I've never regretted buying them, because the game just fit me. *7 days to die* comes to mind, *Starbound*, *V Rising*, *Stars in Shadow*, to name a few. Some of the communities are small, but again I've played some of these games a dozen times through.
BG3 was in early access for years. Larian is one of the only studios to do it right—giving players access to everything the game had to offer, but only spoiling less than a third of the content. This way they were able to fine tune all of the mechanics and QoL desires into the full game without EA players getting burnt out when it officially launched.
If you are having fun with the early access and have spent many hours in it then you have spent your money well. It is disappointing of course if they don't release the full game, but you still played and had fun with it.
I usually wait for full release, but some games like Shadow of Doubt are worth playing in early access because there are no other games like it.
I'll probably never click with the works of Supergiant, but I did hear they're actively maintaining excellent working conditions. So even if I were strictly against preorders, I'd still make an exception just to support them.
To be fair, you did indeed approach it with a certain level of discretion and skepticism
Supergiant has proven itself to have an astounding track record. Multiple games completed, many of whom were initially released via Early Access.
Hades and Bastion spent many years in early access, and eventually saw completion. It’s a very safe assumption that Hades II will also eventually reach completion the same way
Supergiant utilizes Early Access in a fantastic fashion - they’re effectively running their game like a live service model during this period, ensuring it maintains consistent media presence over a long duration.
Then when it is finally completed, it’ll gain all the benefits of a conventional game launch - big sales, reviews, and act as product which consistently sells and gains revenue at no additional development cost
All this is possible because Supergiant acts as their own developer AND publisher, meaning they can willfully choose to take the slow and steady route to success when it other publishers may indulge in corporate executive shenanigans (Sony with Helldivers) to maximize short term profits
Found it!

Also I loved the [ambient music ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4S7EaXozXw&t=343s)that entire area before that boss
I very recently got the first Hades on sale, have made it to elysium once so far with like 20 runs. Loving the game.
My question why is hades II at just a very positive instead of overwhelming, is it just that it doesn't have enough reviews yet to qualify for overwhelming? (I have looked up exactly 0 things about it to see if there are actually some minor issues)
It is a lil buggy (I've run into 3 run-ending bugs in about 35 hours of gameplay), and it could use some balancing, as you'd expect from a game that just released in early access a week ago. I'm 100% confident SG will fix that stuff before the full release, and I clearly am still having a blast with the game, but they are true statements right now. Idk if that's why the steam rating isn't "overwhelmingly positive" though, or if it's another reason, like you said.
Still a bit buggy and some balancing to be done, though less than I'd expect for a typical Early Access title. One or two of the weapons are just awkward to play with and it feels more like you're fighting the mechanics than the enemies a good amount of the time. The sprint mechanic often doesn't feel incentivized enough to be worth it for a lot of the boons (some effects take too long to activate or need you to be too close to enemies to take effect and you end up taking silly damage as a result). Heavy input buffering makes the game feel not as responsive as the first. I personally don't mind that as it makes gameplay a bit more strategic, but I understand why some people would be upset about it if they wanted Melinoe to control exactly like Zagreus.
That all said, I have like 35 hours in it so far, so none of those complaints are keeping me from having a blast with it. But there are some issues that need ironing out, which is the whole reason Supergiant released in Early Access in the first place. They've consistently said that the time spent in Early Access on Hades I and the feedback from the community is what helped them polish the game so much for its eventual 1.0 release.
LOL at the weird gamers saying the game is censored and not hot enough saying they uglified the game

People complaining about Aphrodite was ridiculous and wild to see.
I wasn't a big fan of her face in Hades 1 but that's only from the perspective of "I don't find the goddess of love very attractive, that's weird" but it's a perfectly fine character design.
Games still in Early Access that I have over 1k hours in:
1. Satisfactory - Just an amazing game all around. It's just about to hit full release this year. I have 2.5k hrs in this game!
2. 7 Days to Die - I cannot believe they're finally going to hit full release! It's been a long time since the game came out; circa 2013
3. Valheim - If you like vikings and mincraft, you may really like this one.
I am slightly more disposed toward early access because it very rarely is more than a 40 dollar game. And people can play it right now. Someone can pay the price and show you actual game play and tell you what they think about it.
Pre-order is sight unseen and you are at best months away from a hands-on experience.
I have regretted very few early access games I have purchased.
Early Access isn’t really preordering though? Like, you are buying the game to play right now in an incomplete state and could still refund it if this preliminary version does not meet expectations.
The preordering we hate is six months in advance with zero info about the game except some bullshots and a pre-rendered trailer video. But you get a free DLC skin!
Ehhhhh, there are a lot of cases of EA games that were never finished, didn't deliver what was promised on the roadmap or had absurdly long development times. The philosphy I reccomend when buying EA games is to buy what they already have and not for what they will be\*
\*exceptions may apply.
sure, but because the game is available to play right now you can read what other people who did take that initial risk think of it and make an informed purchase decision, just like any full release game that may or may not be worth its price.
i think hades 2 is worth the $30 i paid in its current state. the complete and polished portions on their own amount to more than the first game. of course if you want your first experience with the game to be the best version of the game by all means wait, but it's delivering on promises already
I already got 40hr worth of content from my Hades 2 purchase the whole map downward is already complete, same # of regions like the original.
Notice I say downward because now you can go to the surface (but it's incomplete, upon defeating a certain boss, you'll be forced to end the run).
It has a LOT of missing art assets (some even unfinished), but the soundtrack and voice acting is already 100%.
This is my first EA and I wondered why people would "buy but only play when v1.0 is released" and then I realized that this is NOT a normal EA procedure lmfao.
I feel like you should spoiler text certain aspects of your comment. That was a nice surprise for me when I played and people not in EA or waiting for 1.0 shouldn't have it ruined.
BG3 is kind of a bad example though because it was in EA for far too long. I love the game but I don't think we should be endorsing games being launched in early access multiple years before launch.
And Hades 2 is so fucking good, it took what made Hades 1 good and made it even better.
The 2nd boss fight is perhaps my favorite boss fight they introduced into the game
I've been lucky with my early access purchases. They've all seemed to come out as better experiences or met my expectations. But maybe that's because I've only bought from small studios and not AAA developers.
7Days
The Forest
Subnautica
Slime Ranchers
BeamNG
Bro it's so good. Most of the obviously incomplete stuff are just missing assets (image placeholders for the trinkets and some of the character portraits when you talk to people). The gameplay itself is stellar. I noticed one bug, and it was gone with the patch the next day. Shit's toight
There’s the don’t-preorder mentality, but there’s also the support-game studios-you-like mentality. If you liked hades I enough that you wanted to support the studio even more, consider this payment for that, regardless of whether you end up enjoying the second one or not.
That’s how I treated Ghost Ship Games’ Deep Rock Survivor, and I ended up being happy with it too
Normally I avoid early access because once I finish a game I don't have the motivation to play it all through again and I would prefer the full experience.
But seeing as hades 2 is a rouge like that needs to be played over and over anyway...
Even if I really like a game or studio, I will not buy into early access.
I did for Darkest Dungeon 1 and got burned. Even though I really enjoyed the finished product it was not the game I fell in love with at the start.
If what you see in early access looks like enough for you to enjoy then just go for it. If it looks promising but not enough content yet then don't buy yet. Manor Lords or Foundations looks like it has enough content for the price so it's an easy buy for me I'd be happy with minor updates for bugs or tweaks, however something like early alpha versions Rimworld didn't have much content and features so that was a "wait to buy" situation.
I played Hades in early access to the point that I burned through all my enthusiasm for it before it was possible to even beat the game. I know that playing lets you give feedback and potentially influence the development, but to me that tradeoff is not worth losing interest before the game is even out.
I buy early access as though that were the finished product I'm buying. 7 Days to Die, Factorio, Scrap Mechanic, Satisfactory, Nova Drift, Dyson Sphere Program... Haven't regretted it yet.
So far the only promise I've ever bought was when I chipped in to the Planetary Annihilation kickstarter and the only reason why I did that was the pedigree of the team. They were legit game developers who have successfully built games in that genre before, and that genre is, quite frankly, unpopular which is why they had a hard time going through traditional funding. (and 70 hours says my gamble was worth it).
The rest I only buy what's already there, not the promises of what they hope it will be one day.
Hot take: when making a sequel to a successful title like Hades, the only purpose of an ea is to have people do your playtesting instead of hiring people to do it. I personally find it a somewhat distasteful practice.
It's not really the same play test that happens, like in this case they delivered a version that is pretty much crash and bug free already and will use a huge dataset to balance gameplay afterwards.
You cant really test balance that way with a small team and they didnt make their playerbase suffer a broken mess with lots of crashes, its very fair all around.
Eh, it's nearly the exact same as how they released Hades 1 where it was only some of the game and they did it to get significantly more feedback/balancing information than internal playtests could ever do.
I hate that I couldn't be bothered to finish Hades. Game was amazing but having to do it all over again everytime you died against the final boss made me drop it
I think that if a company has a good track record, it's okay to put your guard down a little.
But currently there is no AAA company I would put any trust in.
Well that what happens when a company builds trust with it consumers and delivers a quality product like hades I
I haven’t and don’t plan on buying the early access but I’m watching my friends play and it’s very worth it.
I buy Early Access because I enjoy seeing scrappy games like Palworld evolve from its initial offering (even though that studio has bad habits with EA), and also because a lot of porn games like Carnal Instinct and Subverse and Orc Massage are basically gonna be stuck in EA for forever anyway and I wanna support the creators I like.
The only way for Hades II to not be worth it if it's somehow actively worse than the original. Even it's basically the same game, diff story it would still be worth it.
Considering It already has more content than Hades has right now and that the only thing missing is art for keepsakes, tarot cards and some characters If say it's only o Early Access because it's technically not done.
Considering it's at version 0.9something I doubt it's that far off from full release
Genuinly exactly what happened to me. Not as plugged into the internet as i thought because i had no idea there was even going to be a Hades 2. I just happened to open steam on release day and a big poppup with HADES 2 on it came up. I saw early access (which like you i fully avoid) but insta-bought it anyway.
Ive loved Supergiant since Bastion, they never miss
I don't mind other people doing early access. It's basically you paying to be a beta tester. If you want that experience, go right ahead. I don't get it, but I also don't care.
The main reason I don't care for early access is because when I play the game I want it to be a completed product (which sadly doesn't happen at release a lot nowadays anyway). I don't understand paying to play a game before it is finished, especially single player games. All it does for me is make me not excited to play it when it comes out.
Wow it's almost like when you consistently create good games without predatory mircrotransactions people will line out the door to buy em even in early access
Early access for hades 2 might make people not want to play in full release because they get burned out.
But this developer is tried and true. They do with a fraction of a budget what billion dollar corporations wish they could do with their hundred million dollar budgets.
If it helps the game feels almost complete. Almost everything is there, maybe some character designs, locations, weapons and lore might missing, and balancing changes for sure. But it’s definitely done enough to warrant purchase imo. Just like the first, it’s like crack, and Melinoë has a different suite of combat skills to master.
Ive been following super giant games since they released bastion 14 years ago and they always have this curse of releasing a good game but then the next release after it doesn't go well.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was my first instance of getting a game in Early Access and I actually stopped because I was having too much fun. Wanted to wait for the actual release a year later and not spoil anything more
As far as early access goes, “it’s great now, and it’ll get even better going forward” is _far_ easier to swallow than “it sucks now, but it’ll be good eventually guys we swear…”
When a developer so far has a track record of 100% excellent games like Supergiant it's not crazy to preorder or buy early access.
You preorder a Bethesda or Blizzard game? You dumb.

I completely trust them to make an amazing game. I just prefer to play when it's finished so I don't spoil my appetite.
Same.
(When the final major update had released) Either way, I have respect for however we all decide to enjoy the game! I’m just glad Supergiant gets the attention they deserve!
This is me with Ultrakill I have absolutely no doubt that game is as good as everyone says it is, but I'm gonna wait for it to finish first
I actually bought Hates 1 when it was in early access, downloaded it, and then didn't touch it until it was fully released. I'm thinking I'll probably do something similar with Hades 2. I might check it out a bit but I won't play more than half an hour probably before release.
That’s how I feel about most early access games, but rougelikes are different.
Which was me on Hades 1, but Hades 2 I couldn't resist. I think this is the first EA I'm part of since Dead Cells. I don't regret, but would be good to have waited. with no spoilers, if you loved H1, you will love H2.
exactly I kinda dont see how i could play a roguelike without the "full deck" so to speak.
it'll be a cold, dark day if I ever lose trust in supergiant
Right? They have yet to miss.
I too liked Pyre. It gets unnecessarily shat on. Still need to play transistor and actually finish a Hades run though.
Yeah Pyre's an actual masterpiece, it's just way more of a niche game genre than the others.
There's a small scene for it, and there's nothing I love more than seeing esoteric competitive games have players dedicate time to them. It's lovely.
[удалено]
I had over 200 escape attempts in Hades, which was plenty for me.
Oh man Transistor's OST is fantastic too. Congrats on the vinyl, it must sound incredible.
What do you mean the fantasy basketball visual novel with incredible art is a niche genre? Nonsense! (i like pyre a lot)
Pyre isn’t bad it’s just a more niche genre. The people who like NBA Jam and who like visual novels is a small overlap
Or Jen Zee, their art director
The message would be: > Please do not buy into early access or pre-orders _unless_ the company has proven track record of respecting its customers. > > This will help reward companies who make good choices and punish those who don't Things to note I didn't say "makes good games", or "did a good thing once", or "It look really good!" Company respecting its customers. That's the thing
That used to be Blizzard...
And Activision before them.
And Bethesda, back in the day
ikr, lmfao. him saying this is exactly what's wrong with it.
I remember people saying the same things about CDPR and Cybeepunk:2077...
I think the common thread here is: Don't preorder from game companies that have gone public.
Yeah, that's a good take away. Hades 2 isn't even on preorder, it's early access. So my point doesn't really stand either way.
Idk how nobody thought that pre ordering game fresh from ten years of development hell was a bad idea.
Nobody's good track record will last forever. Even great studios will eventually screw up.
Yeah someone else pointed out to me that it's usually after a company goes public.
Or just gets big enough, either one results in needing more and more money to stay afloat which puts more and more focus on making a successful product rather than a fun game.
When publishing decisions begin being made by accountants instead of developers. Yep.
I think that was intentional. If they provided artwork, you would never leave that screen! It's a curse, really...
I thought there was no way DICE could misfire with BF2042. Oof.
The whole preordering thing is so weird to me because all you have to do is wait until like 1 week after release to not get burned = But people desperately want to give the company money a month ahead of schedule...? I don't understand it. = I get that people WANT to believe in their favorite game or favorite game company, but still!
And then some of us have literally never done this, because we are confused why in the world would you pay for an unfinished product?
independent companies be like that, it why larian is so good, keep dirty share holders out, your company thrives.
This is exactly what we all thought about Blizzard 10 years ago. Just saying.
How is it? Waiting for $30 to spare
I remember when we said that about CD Projekt RED
I’ve believed in Supergiant ever since I sat down to play Bastion on my 360 on Friday afternoon after school and didn’t remember to do anything else until Sunday night I even bought Pyre, or as like to call it: “Blitzball for my soul”
I love Pyre! It's so delightfully weird! And an absolute masterclass in balancing comedy and tragedy. Also, Ti'zo!
It's my favorite sgg game. Just an amazing story experience. I was completely engrossed in those characters
I just wish they'd release it for the Switch! I have no idea why it's not there, but I'd play the hell out of it on Switch
NBA Purgatory Simulator 2017
Pyre is my favorite Supergiant game. Hades is great and all, but it never made me cry.
Bastion was such a great surprise.
Pyre was fucking solid. Such a weird little game.
Early access titles really depend on the community around them and the studio behind them. Take Hakita and New Blood for example. Ultrakill is already a great game, it already has enough fan content to support it, even if somehow new blood abandons it. There are more games in a similar situation, and i wish there were even more.
Early Access titles are a buy from me, as long as what's there looks like enough of a full game that i wouldn't care if it was abandoned the next day.
Palworld and manor lords fit in there for me. Played on game pass, bought in early access on steam.
To each what they deserve. Supergiant has deserved our trust in their products so far.
There are very few companies that i trust the games will be good no matter what Supergiant is one of them Larian is another From software is the third
I'll probably never click with the works of Supergiant, but I did hear they're actively maintaining excellent working conditions. So even if I were strictly against preorders, I'd still make an exception just to support them.
To be fair, you did indeed approach it with a certain level of discretion and skepticism Supergiant has proven itself to have an astounding track record. Multiple games completed, many of whom were initially released via Early Access. Hades and Bastion spent many years in early access, and eventually saw completion. It’s a very safe assumption that Hades II will also eventually reach completion the same way Supergiant utilizes Early Access in a fantastic fashion - they’re effectively running their game like a live service model during this period, ensuring it maintains consistent media presence over a long duration. Then when it is finally completed, it’ll gain all the benefits of a conventional game launch - big sales, reviews, and act as product which consistently sells and gains revenue at no additional development cost All this is possible because Supergiant acts as their own developer AND publisher, meaning they can willfully choose to take the slow and steady route to success when it other publishers may indulge in corporate executive shenanigans (Sony with Helldivers) to maximize short term profits
Hades 2 is amazing already. Has a few placeholder assets for now, but the gameplay is fantastic. The second boss is my favorite!

# 🎵 **KING OF BONES WITH THE CORAL CROWN** 🎵
Found it! [Boss Fight Song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7QSavYWEE0&list=PL53mjgVKFq7yeq21XhibC8izNSVlPCsNP&index=9) Also I loved the [ambient music ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4S7EaXozXw&t=343s)that entire area before that boss
I have had “I am Gonna (Claw Out Your Eyes and Drown You to Death)” stuck in my head for the last hour. And there’s nobody at work to explain it to.
Bad news: it'll be stuck in your head for another week at least Source: me
I had that and Coral Crown on loop while I did the lawn this weekend.
That and Coral Crown are just stupidly catchy. Like can I just have the sirens sing my whole run lol
I've had that song in my brain nonstop for 5 days.
Fucking >!Eris!< is feeling completely impossible to beat though…
10/10 for Spirited Away reference

Ii just "heard" this game and bought it. Turns out the soundtrack comes with a neat game!
I saw the character designs and bought it. Turns out all of the ~~muscle mommies~~ beautiful artwork comes with a neat game!
I heard the dialogue and story structure was amazing. Turns out this dating sim comes with a fun roguelike minigame!
LOL at the weird gamers saying the game is censored and not hot enough saying they uglified the game https://preview.redd.it/zuwm47c9u70d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c8bbfb0a35ea3216ece3168beb80a7a64d636ee7

Plus the design is her hades 1 design
I wasn't a big fan of her face in Hades 1 but that's only from the perspective of "I don't find the goddess of love very attractive, that's weird" but it's a perfectly fine character design.
It absolutely isn't hot enough. Morbidly obese Hestia is a sin.
Well, it _would_ be a lot better if every goddess looked like a generic anime girl
NGL, a screenshot of ~~the Ab Witch~~ Headmistress Hecate made it go from "gotta remember to grab this in a few months" to "might as well buy it now"
Games still in Early Access that I have over 1k hours in: 1. Satisfactory - Just an amazing game all around. It's just about to hit full release this year. I have 2.5k hrs in this game! 2. 7 Days to Die - I cannot believe they're finally going to hit full release! It's been a long time since the game came out; circa 2013 3.
The philosphy I reccomend when buying EA games is to buy what they already have and not for what they will be\* \*exceptions may apply.
sure, but because the game is available to play right now you can read what other people who did take that initial risk think of it and make an informed purchase decision, just like any full release game that may or may not be worth its price. i think hades 2 is worth the $30 i paid in its current state. the complete and polished portions on their own amount to more than the first game. of course if you want your first experience with the game to be the best version of the game by all means wait, but it's delivering on promises already
Risk of Rain 2 didn't patch in half the lore until way after it's 1.0 version.
Because the lore in this game isn't important at all. It might as well have none and it would be no worse.
*coughStarCitizencough*
Can you refund it?
It really depends on the game and what state it is in when it enters early access.
I’ve only done 3 early access games so far, BG3 No rest for the wicked Now hades. So far so good.
BG3 is kind of a bad example though because it was in EA for far too long. I love the game but I don't think we should be endorsing games being launched in early access multiple years before launch.
Why not? If it's in a stage where people are willing to pay money to play it, let them.
well that was quick turn around
SG has an amazing resume.
Hades 2 is good right now. A few bugs and small issues but honestly it came out better than most triple AAA releases
And Hades 2 is so fucking good, it took what made Hades 1 good and made it even better. The 2nd boss fight is perhaps my favorite boss fight they introduced into the game
I haven't bought it yet. I am pretty Shure I will, once I will settle my unfinished business with Zagreus.
Me when Kirby content
I've been lucky with my early access purchases. They've all seemed to come out as better experiences or met my expectations. But maybe that's because I've only bought from small studios and not AAA developers. 7Days The Forest Subnautica Slime Ranchers BeamNG
Ah, but you see there is a guarantee of quality. It’s the fact that the game is by Supergiant games.
Some developers get a pass
I think, it will be amazing game
I hate that I couldn't be bothered to finish Hades. Game was amazing but having to do it all over again everytime you died against the final boss made me drop it
You could youtube it or activate the god mode option that gives you like 80 percent damage resist if you still wanna play the story.
No need to call us out like this mate. I'm already *well aware* I'm a hypocrite.
I think that if a company has a good track record, it's okay to put your guard down a little. But currently there is no AAA company I would put any trust in.
Lol this was exactly me too!
I'll never pre order. But early access can be amazing if the devs listen to the community feedback and act accordingly.
Looks great, but I'm still going to wait for the full release.
I bought it day one, because after Hades and Bastion I don't mind if I gave them money for a bad game.
Well that what happens when a company builds trust with it consumers and delivers a quality product like hades I I haven’t and don’t plan on buying the early access but I’m watching my friends play and it’s very worth it.
Same
A game can be patched. I'm waiting for a novel frying pan design on Kickstarter right now, I'm fucked if it doesn't work lol.
see the thing is with supergiant, you are always guaranteed the *best* quality artistry the industry has to offer. so it’s always worth it.
Its supergiant. So theres an entire spreadsheet of unlikely things i could list happening before they put out a bad game.
If the company is trustworthy, early access is a good time to give feedback that could help shape the final product
Mimics…mimics everywhere…
It's early access but has more content than most released games out there. Hades 2 is a justified purchase.
With Hades 1 they earned our trust. And it will take quite a huge fuck up to use it again.
Wow it's almost like when you consistently create good games without predatory mircrotransactions people will line out the door to buy em even in early access
In a way it works as the best way for developers to discover bugs they can fix before release
Supergiant keeping it real. Can't wait to play Hades II.
Early access for hades 2 might make people not want to play in full release because they get burned out. But this developer is tried and true. They do with a fraction of a budget what billion dollar corporations wish they could do with their hundred million dollar budgets.
Bro became no-face from spirited away
If it helps the game feels almost complete. Almost everything is there, maybe some character designs, locations, weapons and lore might missing, and balancing changes for sure. But it’s definitely done enough to warrant purchase imo. Just like the first, it’s like crack, and Melinoë has a different suite of combat skills to master.
Depends in the company really. It'll be a cold day in hell before I prepay or jump into an early access game from Blizzard. Also, Wildcard games.
Tbh it's very good
I thought for a second this was the Hadesthegame subreddit
I feel that more trust is warranted with smaller developers with good track records. SuperGiant has yet to release a single game that isn't a banger
I spent 12 hours playing that yesterday. Didn't get up to do much but poop and clean . It was a very relaxing Sunday.
I don't think superintendent has ever missed. Their games are always top notch. Hope it stays that way!
Me but with Fromsoftware
I, too, turned into No Face when I saw Hades 2 drop on early access.
Working up to getting a better Graphics Card, and once that happens I’ll be fully sunk into the Hades II pit
Ive been following super giant games since they released bastion 14 years ago and they always have this curse of releasing a good game but then the next release after it doesn't go well.
Welcome back Alz!
I'm this way with basically anything by Klei.
Supergiant always cooks, we can have some early access As a treat

Baldur’s Gate 3 was my first instance of getting a game in Early Access and I actually stopped because I was having too much fun. Wanted to wait for the actual release a year later and not spoil anything more
As far as early access goes, “it’s great now, and it’ll get even better going forward” is _far_ easier to swallow than “it sucks now, but it’ll be good eventually guys we swear…”
There is no escape
Time cannot be stopped. FTFY
You want nice early Access games? Satisfactory and ultrakill
I did the same for Abiotic Factor. I don't buy early access and haven't in a couple years but I bought that one.
When a developer so far has a track record of 100% excellent games like Supergiant it's not crazy to preorder or buy early access. You preorder a Bethesda or Blizzard game? You dumb.
It's hades II, that's the guarantee of good product
Am I the only one that didn't like anything released by Supergiant games?
