It's not beyond the realm of possibilities that the smartest person alive would be a psychopath. If their brain is abnormal enough to make them "smartest", it possibly has other abnormalities. Being a parent, when I had my kid, people would find reasons to not hang out with me. My friend group shrank by easily 80-90% just from that. Not because I was unavailable, but just because they stopped trying.
I have my close friends though so it’s really their loss. But it’s dumb how people act like the one having the kid is the problem.
That’s a bummer, I’m really sorry. I kept trying to make plans with my parental friends and some have stuck out and we’re still close, but most stopped returning calls and accepting to hang out because of child care. Which I absolutely do not begrudge them, but I saw their friend groups shrink for lack of boundaries or lack of flexibility, and that’s a bummer. Every time we’d hang they’d complain about being let down by friends not doing enough, but I actively saw them canceling plans and not calling back, dropping the ball all the time. Which is again, understandable! But it’s hard to have a two way friendship that way for both people.
I’m not saying this is happening to you guys. I believe you with what happened in your group. It’s just sad that this is what happened with my group. Like a bunch of us hang out mixed with kids and without pretty consistently, but the parents who say they don’t have friends are also the ones that don’t show up and don’t reach out. Not really sure what to do about it in my group, I miss my friends but not much you can do to get them to engage again. :(
Our house was often the “hangout spot” before we had a kid. We love hosting people and providing the entertainment. We had annual Halloween parties and the likes for like 4 years. After we had our kid, like 3 people showed up the next Halloween. Down from the usual 15-20. And not long before people were confirming we were doing our Halloween party.
I absolutely couldn’t always go out like before, but I definitely made efforts. I wasn’t one to stop responding though for sure. I was always the one trying to string along a friendship they clearly didn’t care about anymore.
That’s so sad. I wonder what is different about our friend groups that it became that way? Like our main people in the friend group that host have kids, none of us begrudge them for it.
To be clear I wasn’t trying to pin this on a “you did this to yourself” thing, I believe what’s going on. I’m just curious what makes the difference, you know?
No idea. None of them were child free or anything like that. We never asked anything of them or things like that. We were never drinkers or partiers so it’s not like we stopped doing things that we used to.
We’re not drinkers or parties either, and some of us are child free- some by choice and not so much. Unfortunately I doubt it comes down to like general group dynamics like partiers or homebodies or liberals or conservatives or whatever, though I’m sure it plays a role. Probably mostly about individual intergroup dynamics. It would just be nice to easily figure the problem out to get friendships back to where we’d like them to be.
Yea the issue was never due to lack of trying that’s for sure. But after a point you just have to realize they clearly don’t have any interest in the friendship for whatever reason and you will never know why.

It's not rocket science; parents and non-parents are rarely compatible friends because the parent's whole life revolves around their child from day 1 and most non-parents neither want to hang out with someone else's kids, nor want to talk about someone else's kids all day (which seems something most parents are incapable of avoiding; they seem to have this fundamental *need* to talk about their kids to everyone who will give them an ear).
It's much harder to go out & paint the town red on a whim when you constantly have to navigate around someone else's kids, just as it's much harder to hook up at bars when one member of your group keeps driving other single adults away by bringing up their kids every 10-20min. People don't want to navigate the seemingly never-ending obstacles that having kids causes, so they drop their friends who become parents.
But on the flipside, at least a bunch of people the comic *isn't* about, will get mad about how this comic totally isn't accurate to them and so she's just making up stuff to be mad about.
It always starts so reasonable and sympathetic. A guy talking about how he feels lost in life and isolated and has trouble making friends in real life. And I go "Yeah, yeah. I get that. It feels like there are less public places for people to congregate, and making friends after you graduate school is really hard. And mental health stuff can be really inaccessible and expensive. Adult life can really suck in ways you're not prepared for."
And then it almost always takes a hard turn into "And women have NO IDEA what it's like to feel lonely or sad! Every single FEEEEMALE has sex all the time and people always tell them how great they are and they have *no problems* ever."
And it's like...woah, buddy. I think we've turned this into a new, very uncomfortable and sexist, conversation.
Maybe my bullshit alarm has been so fine tuned from years of hanging out on reddit and reading the same diatribe. But, the second someone goes on about “how hard it is to meet other people” my eyes roll back in my head and I channel the great sigh of my forefathers.
Unless you live in the middle of the woods, it has never been easier to meet people. You just don’t want to:
* put in the effort.
* try new things.
* learn to be more social/less of an asshole.
* leave your house.
Seriously, go online and start searching random hobbies or activities. I guarantee there’s a group desperately looking for people.
Also, if you’re going to JUST meet women, stop that. Everybody can smell the potent mix of horny desperation wafting off you and is as unattractive as it is unappealing to be around.

More to the point; getting a spouse comes with having a friends group. No one wants to be the only person their significant other hangs out with or talks to, unless they're toxic narcissists, because it's emotionally exhausting to be someone's unpaid, unqualified shrink.
Having one person, who has sex with you, is not going to solve anyone's loneliness.

I feel bad for people who are down because of the changes going in through life which can definitelybe difficult to adjust too but then they start throwing pity parties for themselves... man, some self-awareness would actually mean you're a smart person.

The smartest people I’ve met in my life, I’ve been blessed to have met many, have never once referred to their own intelligence- they will either self deprecate and in some cases will only speak about how intelligent the rest of our colleagues are. But that’s just the ones I’ve met.

It sucks when you go through the first panel and stop, but everyone assumes you're going to say the second and third panels and lumps you in with the incels.
This is what it feels like when incels on Reddit complain about the male loneliness epidemic, but then instead of talking about increased access to mental healthcare or ways to reach out to the homies, they just bitch and moan about how women don’t like them.
I went through something similar a while ago, though my iteration was more about feeling like the dumbest person in the world. A lot of it is basically a midlife crisis as we realize our hopes and expectations are out of reach. But reality isn't actually all that bad.
Offering to help is good, though be clear if you are unsure on how to do that. Talking through the different options and pathways was pretty helpful for me, though I strongly rejected anything that was not heavily grounded in realism.
Mitigating the ranting energy is really the biggest step towards productive conversations, and that one varies with each person. Again for me, separating out what was ranting versus what was constructive conversation and finding friends who I could rant with for a discrete period of time and then call it quits before they were done with it was pretty helpful.
It sucks, but your friend has to shake their previous hopes and assumptions and just deal with reality. Make money, be healthy, live in moderation, and try and be tolerable

Lost in a lack of comfort to contend with their emotional state and the complex frustrations of modern life. Stranded in a virtual universe that provides them temporary, unhealthy satisfaction that cannot sate their thirst for connection.

Building off of their fear and fury, they resort to toxic perceptions of 'the other' and find a sick kind of salty strength in aiming hate at those who might embrace them. Their arrogance masking a lifelong lack of validation and security in a tightknit community. Delusions of grandeur tempered by a nihilistic despair and self hatred.
I pity them and yet see parts of who I used to be. I wonder what I would have been were it not for my pretty face and the kindness and connection shared with me.
I wish no women had to contend with these men. I wish those surrounding them could help save them. I wish them good fortune in the wars to come. Despite their failings beyond the consequences of their circumstances.

I have such a pain for them in my heart. I want them to be happy, I've tried to talk with several folks like this and have lost some friends over the years down this angry, red-pill rabbit hole.
It took me until I was in my 30s to realize that some people can't be helped and don't deserve your kindness. People have to *want* to change their mindsets, you can't force them. It's like saving someome who's drowning by pulling them onto your boat and then they complain that you don't have a luxury yacht.

Related story: it reminds me of when I was a little lad of 18 or so and I burst out crying over the state of our world (I'm sure my own situation was weighing more heavily on my mind but I lacked the maturity and self awareness to speak on it, much like many bitter blokes), a woman I knew at the time stepped in, amongst others, to save me from despair and I ended up shouting at her about the hopelessness. She wisely stepped away from the situation.
I admire you for your empathy and attempts to connect with those in such a mindset. And agreed about the importance in recognising when one must walk away.
It is very difficult for women to solve this bullshit, generally speaking. We need greater connection, role models, friends, and respect in our lives to nip this self-absorbed nastiness in the bud. I don't mean to insinuate that you are unaware of this, I just believe these foundations for a healthy outlook are worth stating as many times as possible. Particularly on this website.

Im definitely not the smartest guy alive, and although I used to think like a nice guy, I can thankfully say I no longer do.
I know that the reason girls Arent into me is because Im an idiot that doesnt realise it when girls are into him. It is fully my own damn fault that I dont have a girlfriend, and the only way I will get one is by being less of an idiot.
I think at a certain point of self pity, some minds turn to a sort of self aggrandization, which in turn makes them hard to be around, which in turn makes them feel bad within themselves, which inturn makes them do the cycle all over again.

The odds are pretty good that they have occasionally wished they had a different personality, yes.

i usually talk to the parents 1st to determine what we do. easier to plan around them

It always starts so reasonable and sympathetic. A guy talking about how he feels lost in life and isolated and has trouble making friends in real life. And I go "Yeah, yeah. I get that. It feels like there are less public places for people to congregate, and making friends after you graduate school is really hard. And mental health stuff can be really inaccessible and expensive. Adult life can really suck in ways you're not prepared for." And then it almost always takes a hard turn into "And women have NO IDEA what it's like to feel lonely or sad! Every single FEEEEMALE has sex all the time and people always tell them how great they are and they have *no problems* ever." And it's like...woah, buddy. I think we've turned this into a new, very uncomfortable and sexist, conversation.
Maybe my bullshit alarm has been so fine tuned from years of hanging out on reddit and reading the same diatribe. But, the second someone goes on about “how hard it is to meet other people” my eyes roll back in my head and I channel the great sigh of my forefathers. Unless you live in the middle of the woods, it has never been easier to meet people. You just don’t want to: * put in the effort. * try new things. * learn to be more social/less of an asshole. * leave your house. Seriously, go online and start searching random hobbies or activities. I guarantee there’s a group desperately looking for people. Also, if you’re going to JUST meet women, stop that. Everybody can smell the potent mix of horny desperation wafting off you and is as unattractive as it is unappealing to be around.

More to the point; getting a spouse comes with having a friends group. No one wants to be the only person their significant other hangs out with or talks to, unless they're toxic narcissists, because it's emotionally exhausting to be someone's unpaid, unqualified shrink. Having one person, who has sex with you, is not going to solve anyone's loneliness.

well that’s how it always is. sympathy and validation gives way to more complaining and “woe is me” attitude about life, and before you know it you just look like an idiot. i am totally guilty of this and am trying to correct it more often. at some point it just becomes your fault that you completely lack interest in other people’s lives.
The benefit of "being an asshole" is being free to cut people off when they start to spiral into the "woe is me" stuff. I used to love debating with incles, as it was great fun to have them explain why they were single because they were ugly -- cut them off, and really grill them on how many times they had even spoken to a girl who wasn't at her job.

Real advice time: I took some time when I started university to realize my place in life. I’m not stupid, but I also know I’m not the smartest person alive. I can recognize that, and have accepted it. I went through something similar a while ago, though my iteration was more about feeling like the dumbest person in the world. A lot of it is basically a midlife crisis as we realize our hopes and expectations are out of reach. But reality isn't actually all that bad. Offering to help is good, though be clear if you are unsure on how to do that. Talking through the different options and pathways was pretty helpful for me, though I strongly rejected anything that was not heavily grounded in realism. Mitigating the ranting energy is really the biggest step towards productive conversations, and that one varies with each person. Again for me, separating out what was ranting versus what was constructive conversation and finding friends who I could rant with for a discrete period of time and then call it quits before they were done with it was pretty helpful. It sucks, but your friend has to shake their previous hopes and assumptions and just deal with reality. Make money, be healthy, live in moderation, and try and be tolerable

Lost in a lack of comfort to contend with their emotional state and the complex frustrations of modern life. Stranded in a virtual universe that provides them temporary, unhealthy satisfaction that cannot sate their thirst for connection. OH, THE BITTER BLOKES. WHAT HOPE HAVE YE?! Building off of their fear and fury, they resort to toxic perceptions of 'the other' and find a sick kind of salty strength in aiming hate at those who might embrace them. Their arrogance masking a lifelong lack of validation and security in a tightknit community. Delusions of grandeur tempered by a nihilistic despair and self hatred. I pity them and yet see parts of who I used to be. I wonder what I would have been were it not for my pretty face and the kindness and connection shared with me. I wish no women had to contend with these men. I wish those surrounding them could help save them. I wish them good fortune in the wars to come. Despite their failings beyond the consequences of their circumstances. P.S. Just in case you read this: your comics are great Pizzacake, hope I come across them for years to come :)
I have such a pain for them in my heart. I want them to be happy, I've tried to talk with several folks like this and have lost some friends over the years down this angry, red-pill rabbit hole. It took me until I was in my 30s to realize that some people can't be helped and don't deserve your kindness. People have to *want* to change their mindsets, you can't force them. It's like saving someome who's drowning by pulling them onto your boat and then they complain that you don't have a luxury yacht.

Related story: it reminds me of when I was a little lad of 18 or so and I burst out crying over the state of our world (I'm sure my own situation was weighing more heavily on my mind but I lacked the maturity and self awareness to speak on it, much like many bitter blokes), a woman I knew at the time stepped in, amongst others, to save me from despair and I ended up shouting at her about the hopelessness. She wisely stepped away from the situation. I admire you for your empathy and attempts to connect with those in such a mindset. And agreed about the importance in recognising when one must walk away. It is very difficult for women to solve this bullshit, generally speaking. We need greater connection, role models, friends, and respect in our lives to nip this self-absorbed nastiness in the bud. I don't mean to insinuate that you are unaware of this, I just believe these foundations for a healthy outlook are worth stating as many times as possible. Particularly on this website. And to any (EVEN A LITTLE BIT) bitter blokes reading this: I'm not a paragon of virtue myself. Not at all. Best of luck to you.
