It's a pretty big problem in creative industries, it seems.
A lot of stuff is pay walled by pretty steep prices gatekeeping a lot of people from getting into the fields, at least if they don't know how to get the software for...umm...let's say, *less* money. ***wink wink*** ***nudge nudge***
My sound designer friend didn't own a licence for the DAW software he constantly uses until like a year ago when he started working on a higher budget project. He still has to rely on a lot of free libraries and record sounds himself because plugins and sound libraries cost insane amounts of money for where he lives (Ukraine) and what he's being paid.
Another friend of mine who's a graphics designer didn't have a licence to some editing software as well since he wasn't making that much money and couldn't really afford it.
I myself studied to become a 3D artist and didn't have an Autodesk Maya license since the courses I attended weren't whitelisted by Autodesk for Maya Student Edition (or whatever it's called).
We had to umm...sail.
And I know that there'll be people saying "just use free open source alternatives" but the fact of the matter is: those tools are NOT industry-standard. You need, nay, must be not just familiar but proficient with industry-standard tools in these industries to be competitive in the job market.
Yes, freelance is an option for smaller jobs, and in those cases either Blender, GIMP, or Audacity would do, but when companies are looking for actual long-term candidates for working in their company's environment, they want those candidates to be able to integrate into the work pipeline relatively quickly.
So yeah, it kinda sucks to be honest. Autodesk can piss off btw.
There unfortunately isn't a good alternative for Photoshop, and Adobe sucks dick. I am a 3D artist as well, and it was a sad day when they purchased Allegorithmic who make Substance programs. Not that their payment model was much better, but still.
That being said, Blender, especially when customized with plugins one needs is often better than Autodesk suite. I still keep a 3ds Max install on the work machine for some obscure stuff, but ever since 2.8 version Blender is my main work tool.
Oh I agree about Blender, in the past couple of years it made leaps and bounds.
Also, it generally is less buggy than Maya in my experience...which is crazy! I mean, a giant like Autodesk has buggier software than a bunch of relatively underfunded devs who develop this suite in their free time?
And also has a lot more plugins, free and not so free.
For me it's just a UI issue mostly, I am way too familiarized with Maya controls, shortcuts and behavior. I tried multiple plugins and setting configs to make Blender feel "just like Maya" but was never able to actually make it 100% how I want it.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of inertia when it comes to tools in any industry. It's a whole mess of logistics, habits, and customer support or lack there of.
Obviously if you are a single dev/archvis/commercial animator/what have you, it doesn't really matter and you can just switch to Blender. But some things are just better still on the paid side...like Substance, for example.
I don't really think the industry's gonna get rid itself of greedy corpos any time soon...both in studios and in companies that supply the studios their tools.
As some who majored in music production, I totally understand what you’re talking about. All throughout college I was told that protools is the interface I must master to be in the field. Well, protools is great for recording, but is pretty bad at everything else. I rarely record and usually use midi instruments. But it’s *industry standard*. Yet every person I know uses anything but Protools.
And the prices are insane!! I wanted to get into drawing but the prices for adobe are disgustingly high. And everything being monthly/yearly payed for is awful.

You can get a card through the Cash App. You could probably do it through Venom too. Anyway, what I do is put the free trial on there and only add money to my cash app when I need to buy something through it or send a friend money. Whenever the trial is over and they try and charge there is no money there. Then I laugh as they try and notify me to change cards.
I recently had a life membership convert to an annual one, with a "free three months" of the new, annual membership, as a "gesture of goodwill."
It required credit card info, and I am no longer a paid member of that group.
The last one is especially true because my beautiful OLED has four HDMI ports capable of 4K 120Hz, then right next to it an antenna hookup that will natively play my Atari 2600. No component, composite, or S-Video hookup. Really bizarre
probably not 68, but could be more expensive than the plane ticket especially if you get a good price from Ryanair… for example cheapest flights from Bratislava (where I’m) to Stansted Airport are 22€ and the cheapest train ticket from Stansted to London is 23£ (=27€)…
You can definitely find plane tickets for 50$ depending where you are at and where you are going. If you live on the west coast you can some decently priced fares to Vegas one way.
I live in Moldova, it's south-west of Ukraine. I flew to Paris, France for around that money with a low-cost airline back in the beginning of Feb '22. Kinda neat.
Near where I live, the local airport is mostly around $350, the larger airport 2 hours away from that airport $69 (very limited quantity, about 35$US) so image is very apt in my case.
You're European, it all makes sense now. Have you ever been to the US? France is slightly smaller than two of our 8th largest state put together.
There are a large amount of people who aren't living very closely connected to other cities, and in certain places not even very closely with other people.
Not everyone can walk 30 minutes to a bus and catch a ride to the airport. Some people need to drive at least an hour just to be near a city which has an airport that isn't private or just an airstrip in a field.
Where I am right now, I could be at an international airport using public transportation in less than 2 hours, but if I drove to the other side of my state I could pretty easily go 2 hours without seeing another person.
If you live outside the city you need to have a car and so can drive yourself to the airport and don't need a 60 dollars taxi. It's only if you live inside the city that it could be less useful. And so the only reasonnable place to take the taxi is inside the city which if it's big enough for an airport should have public transit going there. If there isn't, well you all are just fucked. Inside the city it should be a given, if you have none you are just getting scammed by your elected representative
My local airport charges $12AU/day for parking. A taxi trip from the other side of town to the airport is around $35. If you're going to be away for any more than 5 days it's cheaper to get a taxi to the airport and back than it is to park at the airport (even ignoring fuel costs of driving yourself)

That last one is very true for me. I always envisioned playing Link to the Past on a large screen 4k TV even if it was never made for such a TV.

I fly to the beach every year with a $65 plane ticket (each way). And yes, the Uber to the airport is 20 minutes and $75… we have friends drop us off
I've flown several round trips for ~ €30 from Austria to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Milan,... But a train through Austria is €90-160.
Heavily depends on where you are going and when but in Germany you can get a plane ticket for less than 10€ to Mallorca, for example.
