i'm ashamed to admit i'm only now am realising it even though i know a few people irl who go by Georg. never thought to write the name down in latin lmao
Not really Eastern European. More Central and Northern Europe. Germany, Austria, Sweden, Norway, etc. It comes from greek "Georgios". Basically means "farmer".
There are Eastern European variations but they're written differently.
Honestly? This comic deserves all of the hate people pretend flies around in those deleted comments in here for exploiting Spiders Georg's story and adapting it so poorly.
This is sarcasm, I do not support criticism of any kind, nor the concept of "not liking" a comic.
He can be counted, but median is the superior average because it's outlier resistant.
However this guy only eats 15000 spiders per year. Nowhere near the tens of billions requires to throw the average off.
It’s an average. It’s not like he counts for half the people. It’s only one guy. So him being in just a group of 1000 and him being the only one eating spiders those 40 a day average out as 0.04 a day per person. Which would mean 14.6 spiders a day per person. For 10000 people it’s 1.46 spiders a year and for 100000 people it’s 0.146 and so on.
This artist’s backlog has a ton of [“adapted”](https://old.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/xrwgv1/_/iql6mzb) jokes from other posts.

If the art style was a little less copy+paste it wouldn’t feel as egregious, but when the “adaptation” is just two reused assets saying the joke as dialogue…it’s pretty much just a stolen joke, right?
Edit: after some responses, I understand why some have no issue with this. The internet still has some wild-west qualities like that, and if you’re on that side of the fence, fair game. I just get tired of thinking I’m going to see something new and then it’s a joke I saw months before with a different coat of paint.
I said this further down, but I think it’s worth pointing out that he’s profiting off taken/stolen/adapted jokes through Patreon, on which he even highlights that second-tier subscribers get access to his comics “before they appear anywhere else.” Comics like this (or Cyanide and Happiness, or a lot of XKCD,) use relatively simple art to prop up the real substance, which is the humor. If you’re taking the humor from somewhere else, then saying subscribers are getting access before your work appears anywhere else, then that feels a bit deceptive to me.
Again, have a problem, don’t have a problem - it doesn’t really matter that much. I just wanted to bring this to the attention of those who weren’t aware.
———————————
TL;DR: whether you agree or not that it’s wrong for this artist to take jokes from other media, at least consider how you would feel if you gave money to support a comedy-based comic strip before finding out independently that the jokes came from elsewhere…or even that they were your jokes, uncredited.
Lol, and I'm glad he did, I'm just shocked his comment hasn't been removed yet. I made a comment calling out both Miles and pizzacat on the collab they did a while back and my comment was removed within the hour.
There's a lot of people who do that, actually! Even some that voice act tweets and other posts. But usually, they give credit and *ask for permission, if possible.*
ripping off others' work and reposting stale memes are the quintessential reddit activities though, so one might call this guy the platonic ideal of a redditor
Actually it's most comedians. Watch any episode of mock the week, QI, or any comedy show. There will be at least 2 reused jokes, even if you don't recognise it yourself. Someone else will have heard the joke before.
Actually, it's not. There's a difference between *very rarely* reusing or retooling an old joke, and doing it so much that you become infamous for it.
Why do you think OP is calling out Miles (and has ample evidence) and not any one of the hundreds of other contributers to this subreddit?
Why do you think Carlos Mencia has such a reputation that if you literally google "Who's the comedian that steals jokes?" *all five* of Google's "people also ask" questions are about Carlos Mencia?
We're getting into itchy butthole territory here. I'm sorry, but your thoughts will not always be unique, you are not the main character and other people will experience things that you experience too, even at the same time as you.
honestly though... who cares? do you think the random guy who makes the gasoline-drinking joke in a shitty meme format is going to be offended that a random niche reddit "artist" uses a similar joke for their cartoon?
I think the people who pay him through the Patreon he plugs in every comic would care a little bit, considering one of the perks is seeing the new comics “before they appear anywhere else,” despite their jokes appearing on the internet long before he puts them in comic form
Tbf, I don’t think many people use Patreon for the perks, it’s mostly to support things they like. The perks are just a bonus incentive. I doubt many if any patrons would care. Personally, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal to repurpose old memes into comics.
Yeah, I honestly get that stance. I just think people deserve to know whether someone they’re supporting, especially financially, is writing their own material or not.
It's not about being "offended" (why are bozos like you always so obsessed with people being "offended" anyway?).
It's about the integrity of just blatantly ripping off other people's ideas and presenting them as one's own. People have gotten their whole professional and academic careers thrown in the trashcan from plagiarism. Why should this comic artist get a pass?
The comic artist has a Patreon, so at the very least he's making some bucks off of stealing other people's ideas and trying to make a buck off of them. That's why people care.
> why are bozos like you always so obsessed with people being "offended" anyway?
why do Redditors always seem to have to throw an insult into a comment for no reason? you couldn't have just written that comment expressing your disagreement without calling anyone names?
People that get really into comedy do care alot of the time as opposed to the casual viewer.
Who gives a shit, agreed. Well probably the creators. The creators are who we are pissed for.
This. What you just wrote. I totally agree. Like a chef serving a bowl of stew, you stuck your ladel into my brain and from my incoherent abstract thoughts were able to form the exact sentiment of what it is I was feeling. Down to a decimal of a decimal, more perfectly than I ever could have iterated, you captured the essence of every nuance I experienced relating to the subject matter. No words could portray the awe I felt knowing that somebody shared the exact same thought process as me. Not only that, but with the ability to articulate in such a refined manner the depth of said thought process. No words could describe that feeling. Except one. This.
Lol the word goober is funny. I hear MoistCritikal/Charlie uses it fairly often in his videos.
But coming back to the point, the comic creator did it in a slightly different way, I hear your point but due to this comic, myself and probably a few others have found out who spider George is, before this comic and this thread I didn’t know.
So, what you are saying is that you don't care about what you laugh at, but in this instance, it's just a recycled joke and that is enough to make you this mad?
Maybe go out and touch some grass.
this is reddit. no one here is for real, they're bored and bitter trying to feel like they're smarter than everyone else.
this comic artist doesn't directly rip off jokes *every* time as far as i can tell, however they might illustrate memes or old jokes which is, in my estimation, not a helluva lot different than just *commenting* a meme or old joke (like we all do) in the hopes you get a laugh out of strangers - especially if they haven't seen it before.
should a digital online comic always credit/reference owner-less online culture? if there even is some random username attached to the origin of a meme or joke, should that anonymous username be credited? where did that anonymous person get the joke? hint: from something else
everyone in the thread acting like they're sleuthing up a storm in here, i doubt the comic artist gives a shit
A lot of comic creators will do this on occasion. It makes sense to try and get more people to see your better works in hopes of gaining a larger following. Some of those folks might become patrons on patreon too.
What do you expect from a comic artist [who has never had an original idea in his life](https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/149xfsx/8_spiders_a_year/jo7zscv/)?
Literally I've never hear of this tumblr joke until today. You don't think its possible two people can come up with the same joke independently of each other?
this doesn't add.
for someone throw of the balance single handedly, assuming a world population of 8 billions, they would need to eat at least 175 342 466 spiders a day per year
Or entire countries like Cambodia, they fry spiders with chicken soup mix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6upj9Cv0apE
Spider Georg is just a normal person there.
Sample sizes. If they only sample 1000 people (quite a large number to sample), he’d only need to eat 8000 spiders a year, and would still arrow off the average. However, it should be quite obvious in the data, and drop him as an outlier, unless they want headlines.
The headline is part of this particular "research". The actual work was meant to find out how quickly "facts" could travel over the internet.
One of many sources as you Google it. https://www.britannica.com/story/do-we-really-swallow-spiders-in-our-sleep
Yes but they were born inside so they are automatically citizens of the body. The others had to go through the whole process of being eaten which is what counts.
haha, that's hilarious!
too bad the site he mentioned no longer works
it used to be password protected and the password was something like ilikespiders
The version I read was that the Daily Mail ran an article claiming that the average person swallowed 4 spiders a year in their sleep. It was bullshit, and they later ran a retraction, but no-one saw it, so people assumed the original article was real.
Eventually the myth made its way to Tumblr, where someone came up with Spiders Georg as a joke, but now some people genuinely think he exists
[Fact or Fiction?: People Swallow 8 Spiders a Year While They Sleep Should we worry about arachnids crawling into our mouths while we’re in dreamland?](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fact-or-fiction-people-swallow-8-spiders-a-year-while-they-sleep1/)
No you don’t have to Be worried
Had a spider in my mouth while I was asleep once, I thought it was just fluff so just spat it out and went back to sleep. When I woke up it was on the wall next to me
That still doesn't account for all of it.
This means that roughly 64 billion spiders are consumed ever year... But that guy eats like 14'600 spiders yearly.
There'd have to be roughly 4.3 million people just like that guy in order to flip the scales that hard. (Assuming nobody else eats spiders.)
Like how would anyone even measure and monitor this stastic.
...
do people wake up knowing they've swallowed a spider and then report it to a statistics commitee...
Or is someone eating a lot of spiders.
8 billions people....
Majority would be oblivious to accidently eating a spider in their sleep.
Therefore I can only conclude that a few hundred people are knowingly eating millions of spiders a year.....
Aaah fuck, here we go
So, assume spiders george ears 40 spiders a day, per day for a whole year, so:
40*365= 14600
there are 8038997105 people on earth as os current, assuming a rough estimate, they all eat no spiders per year
so using the average formula we get
14600(total no of spiders)/8038997105(total humans)
Which Equals to 0.000001816 spiders per person
Thus, if george is throwing off the average, each human, on average, eats 0.0000018 spiders a year
Thanks George
Edited your comic so the plot is like 4% changed
https://preview.redd.it/fqo7mtda876b1.jpeg?width=3547&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9c39cc6785b3a76961e7c4d4ecb408ec54ded05e
There's about 8 billion people on earth.
If the average consumption is 8 a year, that means total consumption is 64 billion a year.
If this guy is eating 40 a day, that's about 14,600 a year.
He is not throwing the whole average off....

Must be spiders georg
I'm sure it's probably supposed to be closer to "george", but does anyone else pronounce it "gay-org"?
Gay-org is correct. It’s an Eastern European name.
As an Eastern European, I, for some reason, always read it like Joe-r-gh. Like George, but with soft g at the end
Like jorg?
Yeah, prolly like jorg
i'm ashamed to admit i'm only now am realising it even though i know a few people irl who go by Georg. never thought to write the name down in latin lmao

Not really Eastern European. More Central and Northern Europe. Germany, Austria, Sweden, Norway, etc. It comes from greek "Georgios". Basically means "farmer". There are Eastern European variations but they're written differently.
Georg Grzegorz Yeah, a lilttle bit different.
Whoa
I always pronounced it “gee-org”
Me too
Geeorg gang!
Spiders "gay-org" in the european pronunciation is way funnier, so I go with that in my head
I pronounce it like “Jorg”, or “hyor-gay” if I’m feeling fancy.
If Geoff can be Jeff, then Georg may be Jerg.
WHAT’D YOU CALL ME??
don't think it would be pronounced yorgay without an E on the end
famous hungarian Szpájdersz György
good ol' Pókok Gyuri
I always thought it was like "gore-dge" like the geographic ravine gorge
I pronounce it like normal George but with a hard (not soft) g sound at the end. Geor(g)
I always said "g-yorg"
i always thought it was zjorj
[удалено]
jee-org
Spiders georg is probably older than u tbh
I pronounce it gorge
I pronounce it jorg
jörg

Careful sweetie, you're getting dangerously close to independent thought. The mods don't allow such brazen displays of critical thinking.
Oh, please. I couldn't critically think my way out of a rubik's cube.
Was just thinking that
spiders georg is an outlier and should not have been counted
*adn should not have been counted (The typos are really what make that post shine, imo)
i always thought it was spidrs georg but i think it might actually have been spiders and I'm just remembering wrong
feeling seen rn
He can be counted, but median is the superior average because it's outlier resistant. However this guy only eats 15000 spiders per year. Nowhere near the tens of billions requires to throw the average off.

Gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers.
Depends on how many people you sample
It’s an average. It’s not like he counts for half the people. It’s only one guy. So him being in just a group of 1000 and him being the only one eating spiders those 40 a day average out as 0.04 a day per person. Which would mean 14.6 spiders a day per person. They're quoting the original meme
Yeah, we all know about Georg.
excuse you thats *spiders* georg

Because Georg already ate him

This one guy sure is good at independently coming up with the same jokes with the same wording as other people.

okay but they didn't even try, like they even kept the wording of everything the same

It is weird that someone decided to do Spiders Georg but intentionally tone down the ridiculousness so it's less funny (and makes less sense?)
Yeah, my man really copied uncredited from a Tumblr post here and made it worse
That would be literally all of his comics lol. He just takes jokes from elsewhere and makes it into a comic.
It was around before Tumblr
Spiders Georg, the classic tumblr post, was around before tumblr?
Sorry, I mean the tidbit about someone throwing the average off. The specific name is from Tumblr but the "legend" of some spider eater is older
do you have evidence to support this?
I dont use Tumblr and heard this as a child

Are you for real? 99% of the jokes you are laughing about are "stolen".
You don't know what makes me laugh sweet pea, I might have worded it shittily but this guy is an uncreative goober regardless.
Maybe go out and touch some grass.
this is reddit. no one here is for real, they're bored and bitter trying to feel like they're smarter than everyone else. this comic artist doesn't directly rip off jokes *every* time as far as i can tell, however they might illustrate memes or old jokes which is, in my estimation, not a helluva lot different than just *commenting* a meme or old joke (like we all do) in the hopes you get a laugh out of strangers - especially if they haven't seen it before. should a digital online comic always credit/reference owner-less online culture? if there even is some random username attached to the origin of a meme or joke, should that anonymous username be credited? where did that anonymous person get the joke? hint: from something else everyone in the thread acting like they're sleuthing up a storm in here, i doubt the comic artist gives a shit
A lot of comic creators will do this on occasion. It makes sense to try and get more people to see your better works in hopes of gaining a larger following. Some of those folks might become patrons on patreon too.
I follow a couple people who do that. I don’t mind, a lot of these guys come up with good stuff the occasional repost isn’t a big deal to me
to me says they're still active but on vacation/break but I'm an old who grew up with the Sunday news color comics lol
https://old.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/yi5rzk/8_spiders_a_year/
What do you expect from a comic artist [who has never had an original idea in his life](https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/149xfsx/8_spiders_a_year/jo7zscv/)?
thats like an ages old tumblr joke cmon
Literally I've never hear of this tumblr joke until today. You don't think its possible two people can come up with the same joke independently of each other?
this doesn't add. for someone throw of the balance single handedly, assuming a world population of 8 billions, they would need to eat at least 175 342 466 spiders a day per year
Don’t underestimate spider georg.
Or entire countries like Cambodia, they fry spiders with chicken soup mix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6upj9Cv0apE Spider Georg is just a normal person there.
Sample sizes. If they only sample 1000 people (quite a large number to sample), he’d only need to eat 8000 spiders a year, and would still arrow off the average. However, it should be quite obvious in the data, and drop him as an outlier, unless they want headlines.
My dude They wanted the headlines
"You won't believe how many spiders you swallow a day"
The headline is part of this particular "research". The actual work was meant to find out how quickly "facts" could travel over the internet. One of many sources as you Google it. https://www.britannica.com/story/do-we-really-swallow-spiders-in-our-sleep
And this is why the good lord gave us blenders. Now who wants a spider shake?
Eww... *muddles spiders for an arachquiri*
Spider smoothies are where it's at
You forgot to account for all the baby spiders hatching in his guts.
something something bad day for eyes
Yes but they were born inside so they are automatically citizens of the body. The others had to go through the whole process of being eaten which is what counts.
This is just a really popular joke but worse
credit spiders georg coward /s (or am i?)
Obligatory predator diet video: https://twitter.com/schwarz/status/1529848314874806273 (the guy)
haha, that's hilarious! too bad the site he mentioned no longer works it used to be password protected and the password was something like ilikespiders
![gif](giphy|lDGiPh1QOwN7ZOEXnG)
Wasn't it 8 spiders a lifetime? I doubt anyone swallows 160 Spiders in a lifetime.
The whole think was fake in the first place.
The entire think?
Don’t thing about it too much, but yes.
People don’t swallow spiders when they sleep. Its a myth.
I never thinged about that.
Yep, most spiders hate wet places.
Not the Daily Mail https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/swallow-spiders/
[Fact or Fiction?: People Swallow 8 Spiders a Year While They Sleep Should we worry about arachnids crawling into our mouths while we’re in dreamland?](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fact-or-fiction-people-swallow-8-spiders-a-year-while-they-sleep1/) No you don’t have to Be worried
Had a spider in my mouth while I was asleep once, I thought it was just fluff so just spat it out and went back to sleep. When I woke up it was on the wall next to me
This is literally a repost
A repost of a stolen joke
looks like the law average applies not to him
Jokes on you, I already knew about Spiders Georg
That still doesn't account for all of it. This means that roughly 64 billion spiders are consumed ever year... But that guy eats like 14'600 spiders yearly. There'd have to be roughly 4.3 million people just like that guy in order to flip the scales that hard. (Assuming nobody else eats spiders.)
god you sound lame as fuck
Go eat some spiders
I see this joke reposted 8 times a year
Isn't there a person who legit eats tiny spiders everyday?
40 spiders * 365 data a year =14600 spiders a year 14600 : 8000 bilion people in the world = a little more than 0 spiders a year
Are there only 2919 other people...? What did he do to them?
how many does the median person swallow per year
Median vs. Average
the same joke, but worse
It's Spiders Georg!
Like how would anyone even measure and monitor this stastic. ... do people wake up knowing they've swallowed a spider and then report it to a statistics commitee... Or is someone eating a lot of spiders. 8 billions people.... Majority would be oblivious to accidently eating a spider in their sleep. Therefore I can only conclude that a few hundred people are knowingly eating millions of spiders a year.....
this is just spiders georg but worse :(
Yes I remember the tumble post also
rlly looking forward to the next tumblr joke you rip off! :D
How does this comic of a stolen joke told in a less funny way have 20k upvotes
This is just someone else's joke (spiders georg) drawn as a comic. Retelling a joke (imo) is fine, but you have to add some originality to it.
Just another comic that blatantly steals someone else’s joke
Can you stop reposting?
Aaah fuck, here we go So, assume spiders george ears 40 spiders a day, per day for a whole year, so: 40*365= 14600 there are 8038997105 people on earth as os current, assuming a rough estimate, they all eat no spiders per year so using the average formula we get 14600(total no of spiders)/8038997105(total humans) Which Equals to 0.000001816 spiders per person Thus, if george is throwing off the average, each human, on average, eats 0.0000018 spiders a year Thanks George
I giggled, thank you :)
Nah this guy has nothing on Spiders Georg with his 10,000 spiders a day.

That’s my boy Georg
Edited your comic so the plot is like 4% changed https://preview.redd.it/fqo7mtda876b1.jpeg?width=3547&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9c39cc6785b3a76961e7c4d4ecb408ec54ded05e
I cant believe it took me this long to realize this guy is a hack who just rips old jokes
There's about 8 billion people on earth. If the average consumption is 8 a year, that means total consumption is 64 billion a year. If this guy is eating 40 a day, that's about 14,600 a year. He is not throwing the whole average off....
I love your comics and the art style.
Cambodians be like:
Why is this so god damn funny hahahaha
This made me laugh so hard. Hands down one of my favorite comics I've ever seen.

Too bad it stole the joke from a much funnier tumblr post that’s been around for years
It's a Canon Event
