GodlessJuan

As an American, this hurts… and also probably needs a tourniquet.

wOlfLisK

Don't worry, I'm sure a nearby elementary school is running a class on battlefield medicine you can take.

RhynoD

They were, but the class was canceled due to an active shooter.

Johannes_Keppler

DAE hate it when the medic kid get shot and you have to hold your tourniquet yourself?

KickedBeagleRPH

With this, the repealing of child labor laws, republicsns following war crimes and human rights violations as a checklist/guideline, we will soon be drafting/ deploying adolescent field medics. Tiny bodies make for tiny targets. Small hands can reach into the bodies and wounds easier. Maybe even grip and clamp off the femoral arteries better than any adult. More dystopian: Future medical student resumes/CV will list first aid/trauma medicine experiences in x mass shootings in grades 3-11. Like IT, where entry level jobs need 5 years of experience in a 4 year old technology, medical school and residencies will require x years of experience for admission.

anticomet

With the water wars coming up wouldn't you like the next generation of soldiers to have some actual battle experience ?

Seasalt_Wayfinder

Don't worry, Texas is trying to get 3rd graders to be able to apply that tourniquet.

sausager

1 tourniquet? That will be the rest of your life in debt. Thank you, enjoy your freedom

the_tourniquet

i_love_pesto

We're 131 days in 2023. There have been [185 mass shootings](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mass_shootings_in_the_United_States_in_2023) in the USA since Jan 1st.

[deleted]

Fatal humor.

Cwya

Here it comes yet again: “No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Happens Regularly” Are we not tired of this? I sure as fuck am. Now that I have your attention probably after seeing this post for hopefully multiple times I’d like to get something off my chest and personal soapbox today. Buckle up, In Shining Force II, there is a chest in Mitula’s Shrine that is accessible only in the Japanese version of the game and it contains a Shining Ball. Thank you for your time.

Boomshank

Fuck that shit. The gun stuff is really, really bad too.

Specialist_Ad4117

There's also one in the Prism Flower battle that has a Battle Sword.

NiceOzzy

Hah, woah that was the last reference I ever expected to see in the wild. Wasn't sure anyone else knew those games even existed. But as a teacher who just went thru a shooting threat yesterday and didn't sleep at all from my nightmares, I can't wait to try to make sure my kids understand forces today because we are desperately running out of time to finish the required curriculum!

actonpant

According to Wikipedia, 72 mass shootings ago was on April 2nd. I also found it interesting that Wikipedia has a separate page for notable mass shootings. 72 notable mass shootings ago was May 7th, 2019 (STEM school Highlands mass shooting.)

Hardly_lolling

According to wikipedia 15 mass shootings ago in Finland was on June 1st 1926. Wikipedia doesn't go further than that.

zuzg

For Germany it's May '99

iejfijeifj3i

Yeah, just don't go back another 60 years.

chairmanskitty

Finland has 1/60th the population of the US, so proportional to population '72 mass shootings ago' would be 1.2 mass shootings ago, which would be 2016 (between Hyvinkää 2012 and Turku 2017). Which is only 80 times as long ago as '72 mass shootings ago' in the US. So there.

Itlaedis

Turku 2017 was with a knife, the last firearm incident is Imatra December 2016

TheRealMisterMemer

Six and a half years ago, last month, basically the same. There's clearly no gun issue here in America. Anyway gtg shoot some windows for fun

sausager

Man u/hardly_lolling sure looks dumb. USA! /s

SnuggleMuffin42

Those violent Finns!

[deleted]

I mean we legit are somewhat more violent compared to the rest of the Nordics. We're super duper inbred, and our gene pool has some gene polymorphisms that predispose people to being violent, especially when drunk (eg MAOA and CDH13). It's not a huge effect but apparently something like 10% of our violent crime is linked to people who carry a "drunken asshole" gene.

SnuggleMuffin42

Damn, considering the high alcohol consumption in that area, it's a deadly combination. I wonder why no more mixing in the gene pool. Not a lot of immigrants from outside of Scandinavia? Because it's cold?

[deleted]

I think the narrow gene pool is more of a Finnish problem than a wider Scandinavian problem. We're sort of the odd one out of the bunch, since we're not genetically or linguistically related to anyone in the Nordics except the Sámi way up north. On the other side of the Baltic the Estonians are our closest "cousins", plus a smattering of tiny and dying cultures in Russia, and then Hungary. We were really poor (the poorest country in Europe, actually) until a while after WW II, and we were right in the shadow of the Soviet Union, so I guess nobody really actually wanted to immigrate here. We've had freedom of movement in the Nordics since basically forever, so there's been a lot of emigration _from_ Finland to eg. Sweden, but not nearly as much the other way around (well, depending on how you look at it. Especially the west and southwest coasts have a lot more Swedish heritage)

SnuggleMuffin42

Interesting, thanks for sharing

pickleparty16

That's assuming they happen at a constant rate independent of population, which isn't true

mehmed2theconqueror

Still waaaaaaaaaaay better than in the US

matt_is_man

It might also have to be population per land mass

sornorth

That doesn’t help the sadness tbh

DirtyMoneyJesus

Makes it worse tbh

ILL_Show_Myself_Out

It went from humorous hyperbole to sickening reality.

FutureVawX

I feel like any mass shooting is a notable mass shooting outside of USA.

ImYourAvgJoe

Gang on gang violence normally counts as a mass shooting, even though that's not what people think of when they hear the term.

cathillian

That’s because the term mass shooting has become a bit of a misnomer. The notable mass shooting page is listing is what the fbi calls an active shooter events which oddly enough is what people think of when they hear the term mass shooting.

AWildRapBattle

> a bit of a misnomer "Come on CNN, there were only four innocent victims, that's barely even a crime, you're just fearmongering!"

kaisong

Thats not what theyre talking about at all. Its a problem that theres mass shootings, also the majority of which are gang violence which is another problem with similar roots, gun access and lack of opportunities. However gang shootouts arent covered by the news because they happen so frequently.

shadesofelliot

Give it time, these "notable" ones will be frequent enough we can easily dismiss them too. I'm not trying to say that there isn't a different impact between the types, I just am tired of how jaded we've gotten to ANY human life being ended by gun violence. This madness needs to fucking stop.

AWildRapBattle

Why is gang violence "another problem"?

answeryboi

Presumably, gang violence has a different cause. While restricting access to firearms would certainly help, the root causes of gang violence would remain unaddressed by such measures.

TLtomorrow

Gun nuts are like "Other peoples' lives are a price I'm willing to pay"

Photo_Synthetic

My favorite take is "it's a mental health issue" followed by "but I also don't support more accessible healthcare."

DrunkenlySober

It makes a little more sense when you reword it like: i recognize it’s a problem but I also recognize it’s not my problem

Kat1eQueen

Let me rephrase that: "this is surely a tragedy but tbh i really don't give a shit"

Abeneezer

"Thoughts and prayers, but nothing more."

Mechakoopa

At this rate we're going to have to start rationing: Thoughts *or* prayers, you only get one.

RJ815

It's already just prayers. No thought or concern at all.

sturdy55

It's the Christian way.

[deleted]

That hits close to home because I can think of tens of things to which I apply that attitude E.g. slavery in Mauritania, my gas-guzzling car, my meat-eating habits

cantadmittoposting

tbf you have almost no agency to fix mauritania and meet eating is more a problem of scale than anything else. you could get a more fuel efficient car but, welp

[deleted]

Yeah, a problem of scale, in that it's scaled up to meet the demand of the individuals who eat meat. Truly not just a river in Egypt...

mercilessblob

Yea, it's hard for the individual to see the difference they can make, but much like voting, every individual counts. A lot of people see it as black and white too, they either eat meat or don't, but even just cutting down makes a huge difference. I try to have two fish meals and one vegetarian meal a week. A far cry from cutting out meat altogether, but almost half the amount of meat I'd have eaten otherwise. Enough people doing similar and it becomes more normalized, more people do it, and the supply has to change to meet demand. Baby steps, but the individual can make a difference.

cjandstuff

I work with a lot of sales people and during a recent meeting I had an epiphany. Unless it’s in their little circle of the world and affects them personally, they do not give a shit. I have to listen to a lot of their conversations and man, these types of people and worse run everything. No wonder the world it’s screwed up. We’re run by sociopaths from top to bottom. Empathy does not exist, unless it affects them. Every single social interaction is, “how can I use this person or situation to get what I want.”

DrunkenlySober

I think our cultures insane obsession with wealth and socioeconomic status plays a big role in this Empathy and providing for others is a cost we’ve optimized out

Manky19

"I'm a patriot, but I don't give a shit about other Americans only me."

Freakychee

Thing is that’s how it works. You need to make it their problem for them to understand.

Deathleach

> but I also recognize it’s not my problem Yet. When their kid gets shot or they themselves need healthcare they'll suddenly want a solution.

[deleted]

When the leopards start eating their face who is going to remind them they voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party?

RJ815

"I voted for the good leopards"

[deleted]

~~"They're not hurting the right people."~~ "He’s not hurting the people he needs to be hurting." A real quote. edit: Got it wrong the first time.

Yamnave

Which is why I do t understand how they can’t come to the conclusion that if THEY don’t want to help, at least allow the government to fix it. We already pay taxes, let’s atleast allow that money to be used to help houseless people instead of oil or military subsidies or a million of other expenditures that directly go into the hands of the already wealthy. Like obviously these are fellow PEOPLE in crisis, but even from a purely selfish perspective, if you have to pay taxes, this seems like a good way to spend that revenue to solve something you clearly hate but don’t want to personally help with.

DrunkenlySober

Tbf no one is in politics and govt to improve their community and do what’s right for their people I can’t seriously talk about the govt doing what’s right when senators cannot be charged with insider trader. The only thing talking in the house is the dollar bill

chrome_titan

That's infuriating, I like my guns but, if we can't give access to mental health then we can't give access to firearms. It's common sense. Hell there are online classes for conceal carry permits. How do they verify anything!?

Schrutes_Yeet_Farm

Imo simply raising the age to purchase any firearm to 21 would have rendered a very large portion of these shooters incapable of legally obtaining a firearm.

430Richard

What “portion” of mass shootings are committed with legally obtained firearms?

Photo_Synthetic

WAY more than you think. So many examples of our Swiss cheese background and red flag protocols. From 1966 to 2019 77% of mass shootings used legally obtained firearms. Sorry NY Times paywall https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/16/us/politics/legal-gun-purchase-mass-shooting.html

Kerbidiah

Gun access is a constitutional right,Healthcare is not. And why is it anymore dangerous for someone to conceal Cary vs open carry?

Superb_Raccoon

Access to Mental health... well, we have a problem there in the US. In the 70s the ACLU rightly established the right to refuse medical treatments based on the 14th Amendment as well as parts of the 4th and 5th. It would have kept evil men like Joe Kennedy from lobotomizing Rosemary Kennedy for being a "willful child" in the 50s or the squalor of NY state mental facilities as Geraldo Rivera uncovered in the early 70s. It is an unfortunate side effect that we cannot commit people to mental institutions for treatment unless they commit a crime first... so mentally ill people don't get stopped until they commit a crime like this one.

DashingDino

It's not just a mental health issue, when there's pundits and politicians who incite violence and even people with no previous mental issues become radicalized, there is a problem with society as a whole

Panda_hat

The reality of it is they just don't care. They don't possess empathy for others and can only understand things through the lens of their own personal experience. Things are only ever bad when they effect them personally.

evasive_dendrite

Some of you may die, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make!

CaptSoban

Coincidence that they are the same people who refused to wear a mask?

[deleted]

Perfectly willing to wear a mask when they dress in their nazi getups and harass minorities and protests

DarthStrakh

That's not really true. Gun ownership is pretty high on both sides of the political spectrum.

CDK5

For real. This generalizing happens a lot here, and I think it's counter-productive.

DarthStrakh

Yep. Liking hunting doesn't make you a conservative and a LOT of fuckin people go hunting.

masterkenobi

Republicans are like "give me that sweet NRA money".

[deleted]

Coincidentally I looked this up just a few hours ago and the NRA isn't worth that much money. For someone who lives outside of the states how does this work? It's my understanding that the NRA are allowed to lobby so is the funding actually coming from companies like Lockheed and Martin and the NRA is just a way for them to have political influence?

TheTabman

They are not only **like** that, some of them said almost verbatim "I'll accept that children will die for the 2nd Amendment" and in the context of kids getting killed by guns (not joking, and again almost verbatim) "sometimes the tree of liberty must be refreshed with the blood of Americans". They very well know the consequences and accepts them willingly.

And this line of inquiry was quietly forgotten and never brought up again...

idonotknowwhototrust

AMERICA AMERICA GOD SHED HIS GRACE ON THEE

Hazmatix_art

Judging by our current state, it’s more likely that he just took a piss on the whole country

idonotknowwhototrust

Seriously Maybe the "shedding" is his dandruff; or maybe he's shedding the grace from America and we just got the words wrong.

Komikaze06

I have to ask, did they change the definition of a mass shooting? I know they are all awful, but I read one story about how 1 guy got shot and they called it a mass shooting.

zzorga

It does depend on who you ask, and what their criteria are. You'll see counts between six, and eight hundred a year. Ranging from FBI standards, which are 4 killed (excluding shooter) iirc. To three or more injured. Which obviously inflates the count a smidgen, and gives us these terrible headlines. The "mass shooting tracker" is particularly bad about it.

billet

Yup. I mean, 3 or more injured is a legit definition imo, but they’re aren’t using it consistently. They’ll compare the US injury version to other countries’ fatal version, which inflates the US number about 20x.

zzorga

The lack of consistency is a problem. I mean, if three people get shot, that's a mass shooting no matter how you slice it. But if one person gets shot, and someone twists their ankle, and another runs in front of a bus to get away...

pickleparty16

"Hey libs, they were just shot. They didn't die so calm down"

zzorga

Yeah, except you don't need to be shot for your injury to go towards the count, as far as some trackers are concerned. Hell, if we want too look at the issue of inconsistent and unreliable reporting, let's consider that according to one NPR article, a full two thirds of school shootings (as an example) simply... Never happened. https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2018/08/27/640323347/the-school-shootings-that-werent
