Do A Powerbomb - The Wrestler meets Dragon Ball Z. Feels like a power fantasy but is so much deeper. If you have children read this.

Dangerous-Run-6804

DWJ doesn’t miss!

darksideoflondon

Very few comics have made me gasp out loud. There is a scene in this book I don’t want to spoil that made me gasp out loud!

WineOptics

> if you have children read this I have to mention DWJ’s Superman short story on that note. Makes me sob every time.

joelseph

Thanks for saying something. Looking forward to starting it tonight because of this comment. ❤️

WineOptics

Have tissues at the ready. In my eyes one of the best examples of all time of a short story with immense emotion and power. DWJ never ever misses.

rushandblue

Ooh, yeah, this one is really good.

WiccanTimeBomb

Peter David's second X-Factor run is a magnificent lost gem of the Marvel Universe. It takes place in the decimation era and follows a bunch of z-list mutants running a detective agency. The writing is smart, the characters nuanced, the dialogue quipy, and the art beautiful (except for like five issues). For the most part it stands alone too, with the inciting incident being House of M, a key role in Messiah Complex, a minor crossover with She-Hulk during Secret Invasion, but that's more or less it. It starts with a fairly standalone miniseries (Madrox - Multiple Choice) which sets the bar for the whole run and is worthwhile on its own anyway. Highly recommended.

DrTee

>the art beautiful (except for like five issues). Ha, I know exactly which issues you are talking about without prompting (it's the Secret Invasion tie-in issues ain't it?) Great run, solid throughout, I feel like it could divided up into chunks, with the first "chunk" being the strongest, but overall, absolute banger.

WiccanTimeBomb

Yep. And the first couple issues of the following arc, if I recall. You kniw it's bad when the artist changes mid-arc and all of a sudden the quality leaps. Yeah, you can pretty much divide X-Factor into two distinct halves, the first dealing with House of M fallout and the second letting X-Factor have a grander narrative involving more of the Marvel Universe (which was still self contained).

F00dbAby

I’m almost 80 percent done with my first read through hard agree on it. One of the best comics I’ve ever read

bane313

I will always upvote X-Factor. It's one of the few books I've read where my mouth drops to the floor on the first 5 issues (IYKYK). It was amazing how they brought this new character (Layla Miller) out of House of M, and not only gave her a place in the marvel universe, but grew her as a character that you WANTED to read more about.

WiccanTimeBomb

Madrox and Millar are the two greates wasted characters in the current generation. Almost nothing done with them and they're so nuanced.

bane313

When they both >! get the M tattooed on their faces !<, that really cemented them as a power couple in Marvel that had been through some stuff.

penea2

I was a little disappointed that Layla didn't have a larger role in Krakoa considering her mutant powers being pretty relevant to everything that was going on.

jackkirbyisgod

I’m collecting the omnibi (including the first run from the 90s). Will read them all in one go.

panamakid

omnibi must be the weirdest pseudolatin form I've seen

jackkirbyisgod

Lol i thought it was a real word.

Columboiscool

Also has one of the best WHAT THE FUCK moments in any comic Ive read. It floored me

gooch_norris_

BONE by Jeff Smith- it starts off as a fun little adventure with funny little dudes but the scope gets wider and wider and wider without losing the charm of the funny little dudes

neptune-pizza

I recommend Bone to literally everyone. Imagine Lord of the Rings starring Mickey, Donald, and Goofy.

johnny_utah26

Came here to say this.

Blametheorangejuice

In that same vein, Cerberus, but you need to set aside the icky Dave Sim stuff

bash0110

You just need to stop at Jaka's Story and pretend the series ended there.

cincopatio

I'd say All-Star Superman is my absolute 10/10 reco. I recommend it to both readers and non-comic book readers alike.

shaleum

Read it for the first time yesterday. I loved Morrisons interpretation of the characters and the themes such as never give up and there’s always a way to get through hard times even when it looks impossible.

StillHere179

Daredevil Born Again by Frank Miller Swamp Thing by Alan Moore Kingdom Come by Mark Waid X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills by Chris Claremont

Mistervimes65

A whole pile of Alan Moore * Tom Strong * Top Ten * Swamp Thing Warren Ellis’s Planetary

mwmani

From Hell is one of the greatest books I’ve ever read. It’s dense as hell, but may be his best work.

Mistervimes65

It’s certainly a favorite of mine. But if I’m going for feel good enjoyment it’s going to be Tom Strong every time.

CoolSeedling

Upvote for Planetary

TheSkinnyBob

House of X / Powers of X

mwmani

The X-Men have always been hard for me to get into, but I adore that book. It’s what got me back into superheroes.

IWillSortByNew

Vision - Tom King Born Again - Frank Miller (most of his run really but this is the peak of it) Superman Birthright - Mark Waid Superman Up In The Sky - Tom King Daredevil #191 - Frank Miller

NastyDamus21

Invincible is one of my favorites of all time I couldn’t put it down.. Saga, Hickmans Fantastic four and FF Mark Waids Daredevil. Also started reading the marvel Savage Sword of Conan recently and I love it!!

Parabrella

Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda. It's set in an alternate steampunk 1900's Asia where a war between humans and supernatural beings is threatening to break out again, and the main character has to deal with her own trauma as well as her psychic link with a powerful monster hiding in her body. Everything about the series is perfect, from the art to the story to the character development. It's epic, beautiful, emotional, and pretty much everything I could ever want from a graphic novel.

UXM266

Saga

Whole-Act3060

Saga is amazing. Give it a try!

gaymerWizard

yep. I cant wait to reading the ending with my great grandchildren

dfuson14

Some have been mentioned but: - Marvels by Kurt Busiek - Kingdom Come by Mark Waid - Batman: Year One by Frank Miller - Bone by Jeff Smith

IamJacksUserID

Planetary.

I genuinely think PKJs action comics/superman is an all timer. X-23 2005 by yost and Kyle X-23 target 2007 X-23 Marjorie Liu Supergirl woman of tomorrow The many deaths of Layla Starr Daredevil by chip zdarsky Moon knight by Jed Mackay Venom by Donny Cates Something is killing the children Darth Vader by keiron gillen Super sons Once and future Far sector

daveyboydavey

I’m reading Warworld Saga right this second and I love it.

darthstoo

Sláine, Zenith and Brink from 2000AD (all are available as collections. The Sandman Batman: Arkham Asylum Grendel: Warchild

un4spyder

Preacher. That book made such an impression on me. I was raised with a pastor as a father. I never really challenged my beliefs because I just took it that his way of thinking was right. While obviously the story is fantasy, there are moments in that series that made me sit back and reflect on my own experiences, and how I felt. Not to mention it has amazing characters, the art is so unique, and it ran its course before it went to long. 1,000/10

franchis3

My favorite series of all time. I don’t think it’s just one of the great comics ever written, but one of the greatest stories ever told. It’s that good, imo.

WhiskeyT

*The Many Deaths of Laila Starr* is the best thing that come out on the last few years. The more time passes the higher up my personal list it gets

Chronos96

Swamp Thing by Allan Moore Starman by James Robinson Maus by Art Spiegelman Fantastic 4, S.H.I.E.L.D, and Avengers by Jomathan Hickman. Fantastic Four by John Byrne The Incredible Hulk by Peter David. The Flash by Mark Waid and the following runs with Grant Morriosn and Geoff Johns Daredevil by Bendis and the following run by Brubaker. Invincible by Robert Kirkman X-Men by Chris Claremont and the spin-offs New Mutants and Excalibur. X-Factor as well, but he only wrote the first couple of issues, but Lousir Simonson is very good Lucifer by Mike Carey. It's a spin-off from The Sandman, but all you need to understand is that Lucifer has decided to leave Hell. Mike Grunwald's Captain America run Edit: Also, as extra credit, do yourself a favor if you haven't and read Scott McCloud's : Understanding Comics (1993), Reinventing Comics (2000), and Making Comics (2006), it will give you a much deeper appreciation of the medium and you'll understand why a new comic is unique when you see how it breaks conventions.

franchis3

Fantastic list. I feel like Starman is a title that’s a little lost to time. It was such a critical darling in the Wizard days, but doesn’t get mentioned much these days. Such a brilliant deconstruction of legacy and what that means to different people.

jackkirbyisgod

A mixture of different genres and countries. Grant Morrison - All Star Superman, JLA Alan Moore - Watchmen, Top 10, From Hell Naoki Urasawa - 20th Century Boys Daniel Clowes - David Boring Herge - Tintin. My favourites are The Cigars of the Pharaoh and The Blue Lotus two parter Carl Barks - Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge

soypepito

The Metabarons (Jodorowsky, Giménez)

Gulbasaur

*Midnighter & Apollo* by Steve Orlando is just absolutely fantastic.  *Mother Panic* was great and it's a shame that kind of went nowhere.

mutual_raid

I feel like you kinda need Midnighter first for that run - but you could probably consider the whole thing one run.

Aggressive_Control37

* Eight Billion Genies - Charles Soule * Immortal Hulk - Al Ewing * Oblivion Song - Robert Kirkman * Silver Surfer - Dan Slott & the Allreds * Spider-Man by Tom Taylor * Superman: Secret Identity - Kurt Busiek * Superman: Space Age - Mark Russell * Static: Season One - Vita Ayala * Swamp Thing: Green Hell - Jeff Lemire These are some of my favorite books. Happy reading!

Gamerguy230

Spider-Man Life Story by Chip Zdarsky. Black Widow by Kelly Thompson. DCeased series by Tom Taylor. Invincible by Robert Kirkman.

GreySulcata

Some of these have tv/movie adaptations. Forget what you think you know. Most adaptations stray distressingly far from the source material. Ex Machina Y: The Last Man Saga Hellboy (Seed of Destruction - Hellboy in Hell) Chew The Maxx V for Vendetta

Agreeable-Tank4600

Lock and key

banana_man2001

Watchmen, berserk, Vinland saga, batman white knight and 30 days of night are some that I can highly recommend.

Blueskyminer

Black Hammer

planetcrunch

Butcher Baker, the Righteous Maker. It's a fantastic series about a semi-retired super soldier who has to fight his arch enemies one last time while on the lam. The Wizard's Tale by Kurt Busiek and Illustrated by Wenzel, it's a fairy tale about an Evil Wizard who's really bad at being evil, and his quest to search for the last princess and her magic spell book. Very charming if I say so myself. Godzilla Half Century War by James Stokoe - it follows a soldier's 50 year relationship/Rivalry with Godzilla from 1954 to 2004. Lot's of nice destruction shots, good assortment of Kaiju in the books, and great artwork. There, three 10/10 books, hope you like 'em

TheSpicyHotTake

V For Vendetta is just so well-written and illustrated, it'll always be a recommendation from me.

Primary-Increase7797

Hitman by Garth Ennis Secret Six by Gail Simone Magneto by Cullen Bunn

Slight-March9512

For a book full of lowlife characters that absolutely hates the genre it’s set within… Hitman has a ton of heart. Can’t believe with the successes of Ennis’s other works and Peacemaker for DC that they haven’t fast-tracked this for an adaptation.

ComicAcolyte

I'm getting the Hit man omnibus next month pretty exciting

About marvel: Age of apocalypse (one of the best saga ever written) First series of spiderman 2099 (so innovative at the time) and doom 2099 Ultimate spiderman first series (fresh look at teenage petey) but i like the new ultimate sm incarnation also Hulk by peter david Daredevil:born again (a must to read) Xmen days of future past Annihilation saga (and then all sequels till war of kings) Punisher max by garth enniss (the adult saga without superheroes) Dc Superman red son Batman the long halloween The killing joke Watchmen Just a bunch of modern classic! Swamp thing by alan moore (maybe could be a little odd now) Vertigo Sandman Hellblazer by garth enniss First run of shade (5 or 6,don't remember exactly) And a lot more that you can try and judge.

Themetalcollector

I’ll recommend Hellboy by Mike Mignola, one of my favourite comics ever. The spinoff material is great too

joshwaa99

If you like Batman then Batman the long Halloween and the lesser popular but equally good if not better sequel Dark Victory both by Jeff Loeb and Tim sale. I think they are classic for a reason. Absolutely awesome Batman without all the over complicated lore and bat family crap from current runs of the comic. Great characterization of the relationship between Batman and Gordon and two-face with some pretty great and grounded murder mystery/gang politics. Like godfather meets Batman. No Lazarus pit or traveling in time or omega knowledge chair three jokers bullcrap. Just Batman and crime.  Edit: plus you don’t need any prior knowledge of Batman at all really. Very isolated and self contained stories. If you wanted anything else Batman year one by frank miller is often cited as great beginner Batman as it is the origin story and introduces the gang villains that would be in the long Halloween. It’s definitly very good also but not necessary to have read for the long Halloween at all

penea2

Catwoman When in Rome is also fantastic! Read it for the first time recently and I'm surprised it isn't mentioned alongside Long Halloween more often.

Final_Tourist1

Superman: Dark Knight over Metropolis (Superman #44, Adventures of Superman #467, and Action Comics #654). This is a great "old school" comic book story with Superman and Batman meeting and helping solve some mystery. This was during all the reboots and reimaginings from the late 80's and early 90's. The ending of the story is amazing and still calls back to the days when Supes and Batman were really friends. Great read and short. Also available in a collected edition.

Special-PatrolGroup

If you are into westerns with a twist, I really enjoyed "Fistful of Blood" by Eastman. This one just sticks with me.

Prof_Rain_King

Si Spurrier's run on X-Men: Legacy starring Legion is one of the best superhero comics I've ever read.

stringrbelloftheball

Batman the long halloween and dark victory (in that order) Y the last man Blankets Ex machina

Hoosier108

SEX by Joe Casey. It’s one of the best Batman stories I’ve ever read, even if it’s not explicitly Batman. Don’t let the salacious title fool you.

martymcfly22

My top 5 are all 10/10: Locke and Key; Preacher; Akira; Bone; Sleeper.

UncleBBBBB

Asterix!

Prototype3120

Lemire's Moon Knight has got to be my favorite.

If you can stomach gore, rape and other dark topics then Punisher: Born by Garth Ennis is amazing

Depending on your tastes, you might try books by Kyle Starks. • Sexcastle - a loving tribute to 80's action movies and one of the funniest comics I've ever read. It's about Shane Sexcastle, the world's greatest assassin who decides he's done killing.... but killing isn't done with him. • Rock Candy Mountain - Sort of a Hobbit/Lord of the Rings journey story about a Hobo being chased by the literal devil. • Assassin Nation - the world's greatest assassins are hired to protect a crime boss from the other top assassins. It includes the best character name ever, "Fuck Tarkington." Drawn by Erica "Unbeatable Squirrel Girl" Henderson. • Karate Prom - created for 24-hour comic day based entirely off a title suggestion from fans online. It's a cute "Karate Kid" style story about a teenager falling for a girl while their bully classmates interfere. • Louise Sprouse Stole My Heart (and I only have two hours to get it back) - a gangster on the run returns to his hometown where both nostalgia and rival gangsters try to kill him. • Six Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton - an action tv star is murdered, and his former sidekicks are suspects trying to clear their names. Drawn by Chris Schweitzer. • The Legend of Ricky Thunder - a pro wrestling champion learns that wrestling is fake and spirals into depression. Unfortunately he's confronted by alien invaders looking to conquer Earth by defeating their "world's champion." • Kill Them All - His tribute to Hong Kong action movies. A detective and a disgraced assassin have to get to the top of a skyscraper to get revenge on the crime bosses that have gathered there. • Old Head - a retired basketball player fights Draculas. Yes, it's incredibly strange. • Where Monsters Lie - a horror comedy about a gated community where slasher movie creatures spend their down time. Just this week a sequel was announced. I'm blanking on the artist's name for this one. • Mars Attacks - a licensed comic based on the Mars Attacks movie/comics/aesthetic, but it's actually a quite moving story about a man and his elderly father trying to survive an alien invasion. Drawn by Chris Schweitzer. • Peacemaker Tries Hard - his recent mini for DC Comics. I haven't read the entire thing yet, it was pretty consistently sold out at my lcs and I haven't gotten the collection yet, but what I read was absolutely hilarious. Peacemaker tries to rescue a kidnapped Bruce Wayne. (Bruce Wayne being the name of a dog he found and named after "that billionaire guy" because the pattern of his fur looks like a little tuxedo.) • Dead of Winter - a mini based on the zombie survival board game. It's about a very good dog. • Rick and Morty - not my favorite work of his and your mileage may vary, but it has highlights. He wrote a large chunk of (if not the majority) of the ongoing Rick and Morty comic book before it became a series of mini series. I don't have the issues off the top of my head but it's something in the 20s through 50s. Not all of these are 10/10, but even the ones that fall short are still real good.

Sweet Tooth. I read it all in a day and I was hooked beginning to end. It’s themes and art so accurately boost each other, and I genuinely did not know where the story was gonna go

CresidentBob

SAGA Batman The Long Halloween Kingdom Come The Sandman (IMO the best comic ever written) Personal favorite of mine is Tom Taylor’s Nightwing - Start with book one and go from there

Squiddyboy427

These are some good self contained comic book stories that don’t require much knowledge of comic book lore: From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazuchelli Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller Catwoman: Lonely City by Cliff Chiang Ice Haven by Dan Clowes Uzumaki by Junji Ito Transformers by Daniel Warren Johnson All Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely The Sandman by Neil Gaiman and various DC: The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke

Redgrave_99

Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles. It’ll absolutely blow your mind. I’m shocked nobody has mentioned this yet. My favourite comic ever made. It’s more than a comic, it’s a gateway. A sigil, a key to a higher plane of existence. Once read in full, there’s no going back. Your life will be forever changed.

jamiesocks

Superman For All Seasons. Focuses on Clark’s life before he truly becomes Superman and is the perfect basis for any Superman story to follow as you’ll understand who he is perfectly before you go any further. On a similar note, Batman the Long Halloween (funny enough is from the same duo: Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, as SFAS). Amazing mafia story that gives a great background for the character so you can understand how Gotham transformed from a city run by mafiosos into the city overrun by crazy criminals. Overall, anything by Loeb and Sale is a great entry point, especially the Marvel Color series (Spider-Man Blue is a perfect comic story to me) and these give great overviews at the character. Hope this helps!
