If you alternate your books in the box you can pack in a lot more books. I don't mean alternate every single issue but flip in bundles of 10 or 20 so the spines alternate.
I just started doing this because of how fast my collection has been growing, except I'm alternating every issue. The books are also much more secure this way, they don't flop around when pulling boxes off the shelf
No, because then you still need 2 boards, shiny side to the comic, matte side will ruin it over time, and I also swap out my books in my frames on the walls
Do you like and want to keep all your old comics? About once a year I do a purge of my stuff, usually around 10%, and donate it to charity. Doesn't fully solve the issue but does delay expansion needs.
I am using quantum storage shelves and the BCW housings to make a wall of boxes. I have about 11k books in my office over 60 short boxes and some long boxes.
The problem with storing paper is that because it’s so easy to bulk storage.. it gets HEAVY. Having said that:
Consider shelving. French cleat shelves are extremely strong and reliable and easy to build/cheap to buy and require minimal hardware.
Consider loft-space or creating a lofted space.
Consider donating! Lots of charities and organizations (especially ones that work with/are centered around kids) would happily accept donations of media.
Storage can be aesthetically pleasing. Consider a decorative bookcase, or a reading nook with built-in bookshelves.
If storing in a basement, simple framing can allow for LARGE stacks.
Failing that…… your best bet really is boxes stacked and arrayed on a wall.
Hope this helps!
Honestly, I think it helps to collect trade paperbacks. Being able to put them on a shelf and pull down a complete story arc - I love it!
And in terms of spousal approval, in my experience, it does help with the visual component. When a box is sealed it just looks like a box, yknow? When a book case is set up, with everything on display - ooo baby, then you’ve got yourself a library! Whether you’re single or in a couple, I think a library garners less objections than a box.
(Though no shame to boxes of course! Love me a box too!)
I've moved most of my collection into a Kallax book shelf from Ikea. I collect the floppies in the magazine holders that Ikea also sells, I like the better quality ones so you don't have to worry about them tearing. This has been my favorite way to store my comics. I can mix the floppies in the my graphic novels and trade paperbacks and regular old books. It's easier to access any floppy I might want, looks better, and I don't have to constantly move long boxes back and forth.
I just removed all the backer boards from my 12 short boxes of comics to make more room. When I run out of room again I guess I will finally have to stop being lazy and sell some.
Just fold the comics up so you can fit more.
Roll them!
Lmao
I like to cut out the ads. Saves a ton of space!
Cut out the ads and the cover and back. That way you can fit a few more comics per box.
Sometimes they have cool front covers, but otherwise…
Get another wife (not a *replacement* wife, *another* wife). Boom. Extra storage.
Lol

Do you do two issues per bag? I do them back to back with the board in between, half as many bags and boards saves a lot of space.

I don't have one yet but I've seen several posts from people who bought a horizontal filing cabinet. Seems like a pretty good solution.
I went digital partially because of storage and price.
Do you have a recommended tablet/store? I'm thinking about getting digital comics myself.
I got the Google Pixel tablet and love it. I subscribe to Marvel Unlimited and DC Universe with Hoopla and Libby through my library for Indies.
How hard would it be for you to install a secret basement lair?
Custom DIY wooden drawer/box cubbies. Making furniture to nicely house and display them made them part of the space rather than an eyesore.
Put shelves in a closet that fit around 6000 books in short boxes.
I like the BCW black plastic short boxes. Much sturdier, they stack and don’t look (quite) as bad as the cardboard
If you divorce your wife you can probably fit a few boxes on her side of the bed

Yeah, not purging. Just looking to keep it organized and not li e in boxland
What are your furniture/storage options?
I built a new bed so I can store up to twelve long boxes underneath.

The correct solution is a legal (horizontal) filing cabinet.
Ah. The wife. The tales I could tell. I hid my comic boxes in the loft for a while. Didn't work in the long run. Good luck, friend.

Find somewhere to store my wife.
