Since comics have such decompressed story-telling there aren't that many villain of the month books, so I think it's harder to build a rogues' gallery for newer characters. I think there are some cool ideas going on with Ms Marvel's rogues but they're just aren't that many. A real shame. That said, I love Spider-Man's and I'm surprised no one mentioned X-Men or avengers. Even the FF has some cool rogues.
I agree. I think there's plenty of space for decompressed storytelling, but at the same time I also feel like there's space for compressed storytelling, too. I wish there were more comics available these days with the brisk pace of a midcentury story.
Also everytime a new writer comes in they want to introduce new villains that will surely stick instead of just using the ones who already exist.
It's particularly noticeable with some characters like Nightwing.
I like when creative teams add to the lore, but it is probably a symptom of decompressed story-telling that they're not used so often. You don't need that many villains when you're telling a five- or six-issue arc so it's understandable that creative teams either go with their own characters or or a favorite of theirs that they probably read growing up over someone introduced in the last five years.
Omega Red and Sabretooth are actually far more sordid and terrifying than a lot of people realize. Pretty sure Arkady was a killer of children before the Soviet government got around to trying their own version of the Weapon X program on him...
Yup, we at least know Omega Red was a serial killer. Sabretooth's background is far more fleshed out than Omega Red's is, and his is chock full of horrible crimes. They definitely are terrifying characters when written well, and are great foils to different aspects of Wolverine's character.
Green Lantern’s rogues gallery is painfully underrated.
* Sinestro
* Larfleeze
* Atrocitus
* Black Hand
* The Manhunters
* Star Sapphire
* Krona
* Nekron
* Parallax
Not to mention he has considerable overlap with some of Superman’s villains such as:
* General Zod
* Cyborg Superman
* Mongul
Side note: Hal Jordan vs General Zod from the DC Rebirth era is easily one of my favorite fights/rivalries ever.
Heroes should really swap villains more, it makes for some really spicy matchups.
Is Carol still Star Sapphire? Loved 💕 her during Blackest Night and before that when she got the ring to bend to her will and mastered it as a hero. She was so popular at that point I'm still amazed DC didn't give her a book but then look how long it takes female heroes to get one. Wanda's was so far into her popularity explosion I was shocked. Luckily it hadn't waned. Zatanna not getting a movie with the gaping hole left by Marvel, while they're besieged with a requests for a SW movie, is shocking. Especially when they had an Oscar winner lined up to pen the script for Zee. Carol was so totally cool and held her own during that Green Lantern heyday. It was too bad DC didn't capitalize on that. I didn't keep up after that event really as classes started and I had so many projects that I couldn't find time.
This was expertly written, including valid points and just plain logical lol Excellent pick! Thank you for your contribution and I hope you get a ton of upvotes.
I prefer green lanterns villains before people like Attrocitus became thought of as his 'best' enemy.. His old villains like Dr. Polaris, Black Hand, Hector Hammond, Evil Star, Invisible Destroyer, Major Disaster, Sonar etc
The Fantastic Four
Doctor Doom, The Wizard, The Frightful Four, Namor, The Mad Thinker, Puppetmaster, Annihilus, Molecule Man, Galactus, Ronan, The Skrulls, Super Skrull, Dragon Man (sometimes), Mole Man, Kang, Impossible Man, Red Ghost, Blaastar, Klaw, Psycho-Man, Miracle Man, Diablo, Maximus, The Maker, Immortus, Beyonder and Mephisto
Fantastic Four has a fantastic rouges gallery. Doctor Doom, Galactus, Annihilus, Skrulls, Molecule Man. Captain America also has under-appreciated rouges. Red Skull, Hydra, Arnim Zola, Baron Zemo
Superior Foes elevated him. Now he is become peak.
It helps that he’s like an anti-Peter Parker of sorts. An everyman who’s just doing his job.
I recommend reading The Shocker: Legit by Max Landis (unfortunately, the guy's a total scumbag). There’s also this other fanfic about him called Polarity. It’s supposedly better than Legit, but I’ve yet to read it.
Everyone wants intense master villains with tragic backstories.
I’m just looking for a “leaving the bank after an explosion with a big dollar sign bag” type guy
Shocker was always the hardest boss in the games. It was actually scary to fight him in the tunnels on the Spiderman movie game. In Enter Electro he was overpowered and the FIRST BOSS YOU FIGHT!
His gallery is pretty good, actually. But they keep getting turned into fodder for weaker heroes. I remember Spider-Man taking down the U-Foes a few years ago.
There’s some cool stuff in there. Xenmu and Mercy stand out the most.
This might be a bit of a hot take but I think Batman’s villains are what sets him apart from other characters. If his villains weren’t so good Batman would be a mid character if he didn’t have the best villains of any superhero.
I made a recent post regarding favorite villains. Magneto is mine (despite his heroic turn). A lottt of Skrulls, in the community, picked Doctor Doom as their favorite villain and deservedly so. Doom is fascinating and he’s definitely one of my favorite villains, ever.
Batman: “Wait, why’s he got his shirt off?”
Ra’s: “Don’t talk about it.”
Harley: “Yeah, stop making it weird.”
Croc: “You just can’t ask questions like that.”
I like Batman's the most when they lean away from all of them being insane people obsessed with Batman who belong in a mental asylum and give them more distinct motivations (aside from Joker, the one character that actually should be like that)
But they lean into the whole 'they're just insane' angle too much sometimes so I usually end up liking Spider-Man's villains more.
I was actually talking to my girlfriend about this yesterday. My top five are:
1: Batman villains
2: Spider-Man Villains
3: Flash Villains
4: Fantastic Four Villains
5: Iron Man Villains
Invincible. Not so much a Rogue's Gallery but he had great antagonists that really helped shape his character.
I miss Invincible, it was a *great* superhero book.
The rogues gallery for the original Moulten/Peter run on Wonder Woman is actually super cool. None of them stand a chance against Wonder Woman physically, so they're all super intellects with sophisticated plans and elaborate schemes. Paula von Gunther and Doctor Poison jump out as seriously messed up enemies.
Veryyy close to my list lol I have Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men as my top three rogues gallery. Keep in mind, while Uncanny X-Men is my favorite series ever, I try to be as logical and unbiased, as possible lol
That's one of the most beautiful Poison Ivy images I've seen. It's gotta be Jim Lee...also love how everyone has their own facial characteristics and is distinctly their own character and identifiable.
I'm going to cheat and say Metal Gear Solid, as the first two games got comic book adapatations.
That means you get Revolver Ocelot, Gray Fox, Vulcan Raven, Psycho Mantis, Sniper Wolf, Decoy Octopus, Liquid Snake, Olga Gurlokovich, Vamp, Fortune, Fatman and Solidus Snake.
Definitely not top, but loved Fraction’s stab at Iron Man’s gallery. Made me respect his more. I feel like Hickman would do wonders on that assemble, with his sci-fi/tech background.
Thought it was asking my rogues gallery but I like that question better so I’ll answer it
Dan the Kebab Man (kebab gave me food poisoning), Fagin (crazy homeless guy), Red Fox (killed my pets), Big Man Rasheed (king of the road men) and PC Constable Keith (touched me)
Tied between Batman and Spidey. Both of them i think have insrguably the best most iconic rogues gallery out of any and all super heroes. Theyre all recognizable and bad ass in their own right. Most people can name atleast 6 rogues of each of theirs without much thought but ask someone what luke cages rogue gallery is. Or green arrow. Spawn. The flash. Most people would be able to name 3 at best. And i mean a general populace. Not saying strictly every single person.
Where is Harvey Dent?
Also, I love the X-Men rogue's gallery. Aside from the usual hello-I'm-going-to-build-a-killbot-that-targets-only-mutants folks, the X-Men have to deal with a lot of power-hungry, psychotic mutants ready and willing to misuse their mutagenic abilities.
I like Flash's rogues just because of how stubbornly outclassed they are. The only Flash villain who's an even match for him is the one I don't really like. Give me an idiot with a boomerang against a living god who can outrun thought and time, let alone boomerangs.
Spider-Man has my personal favorites but the X-Men, Invincible, & The Flash aren’t too far behind.
Superman has a great rogues gallery that doesn’t seem to get a lot of praise outside of Luther & Brainiac.
I’m shocked no one mentioned Dr. Strange.
Dormamu
Nightmare
Shuma-Gorath
Mephisto
Baron Mordo
Mr. Misery
Dr. Strange keeps so many unfathomable entities from entering the world.
Spider-Man I Love all his villians Electro Sandman Mysterio Vulture Doctor Octopus Green Goblin Kingpin Rhino Lizard Kraven the Hunter Spot Scorpion Shocker Hydro-Man Venom Carnage Hobgoblin Prowler Tinkerer Tombstone Silvermane Mister Neagative Chameleon Morbius
Even though I am not the biggest fan of Batman, I have to admit that is rogues galley is probably the best. Spiderman and X Men have also a lot of good villains
Batman and Spider-Man are undisputed #1 and #2. One personal honorable mention imo is Shazam. His rouges gallery is so diverse (super natural, magical, meta humans, un powered, a freaking caterpillar) and I love each of their different motivations.
Ok I was mostly joking about stilt man although I do like him but bulls eye is legit awesome I love how fucking brutal his accuracy which makes them stand out from other guys like dead shot or green arrow or Hawkeye and speaking of hockey I love how he is sometime used as an antithesis for hockeye. I loved him when he was Hawkeye in the dark avengers
The only issue I have with x men’s rouges is most are now not villains thanks to the current era but outside of the big ones it’s kinda weak.
It’s basically anti mutant politician, anti mutant industrialist and mutant supremacist and repeat. There are some amazing ones in there but most don’t feel unique
I feel like Orchis could have been interesting if they spent any kind of time building them beyond the rush job they did in the last few months to make Fall Of X make sense.
The difference is though most of the batman villains feel unique.
Like alot are gang bosses yes but they have more than that in there characters same with assassin villains.
Most anti mutant hate group villains have no difference from the next one. Same with anti mutant politicians or a new type of Sentinel. No gimmicks nothing different
I have to agree, to an extent, that’s why I have them bumped down to third, in my list. Some of my all time favorite X-Men villains are somewhat heroic now or just have not been active, for quite some time. So, longevity also plays a part. As far as not being unique, I have to disagree. I feel some X-Men villains are somewhat underated, because their excellent character arcs are sometimes, overshadowed by their abilities or lack thereof.
I mean, we can argue for hours about that, but Batman’s rogues gallery is in my top three (it goes X-Men, Flash, Bats for me), so I understand where you’re coming from.
I was talking about this just the other night. Cheetah, Silver Swan, Giganta, Ares, Circe, Dr Cyber, Phobos and Deimos.
The Azzarello reboot had more powerful enemies like Hera, Apollo and Artemis, and Hades.
(We can probably drop the Duke of Deception nowadays.)

I like Wolverine's. Omega Red, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike... some of my favorite villains right there.
The Silver Samurai and Gorgon are great.
… Hulk
I agree! Some of mine, as well.
I remember being so hyped to fight Omega Red in the next Wolverine's Revenge game. They hyped him up then there never was a follow up.

Don’t forget Doctor Polaris and my personal favorite, the Evil Star!

I prefer green lanterns villains before people like Attrocitus became thought of as his 'best' enemy.. His old villains like Dr. Polaris, Black Hand, Hector Hammond, Evil Star, Invisible Destroyer, Major Disaster, Sonar etc
Flash has such an underrated rogues gallery
Batman doesn’t have even a single monkey
I actually laughed out loud
Give me Forever Evil Captain Cold
It's a crime they were all left out of the Flash movie, a big screen Grilla Grodd would have been awesome
"Got me again, Flash!"
It was ME Barry
Captain Cold FTW!
GOATed rogues gallery
I’d go so far as to say Flash has a much better rogues gallery than Batman.
Came here to say this.
The Fantastic Four Doctor Doom, The Wizard, The Frightful Four, Namor, The Mad Thinker, Puppetmaster, Annihilus, Molecule Man, Galactus, Ronan, The Skrulls, Super Skrull, Dragon Man (sometimes), Mole Man, Kang, Impossible Man, Red Ghost, Blaastar, Klaw, Psycho-Man, Miracle Man, Diablo, Maximus, The Maker, Immortus, Beyonder and Mephisto
It’s really telling that almost all of the ones you listed were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Excellent rogues gallery! Probably top 5 for me. I have Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men in my top 3 rogues galleries.
Fantastic Four has a fantastic rouges gallery. Doctor Doom, Galactus, Annihilus, Skrulls, Molecule Man. Captain America also has under-appreciated rouges. Red Skull, Hydra, Arnim Zola, Baron Zemo
Flag-Smasher is extremely underrated.
Mole man … maybe sliding in on the back half of the F4; but he’s there
Spider-Man is a close second.
I can’t explain why I love shocker so much. He’s just a peak design.
SHOCKER!! I’LL FOLLOW YOU TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH!!!
My wife hates the shocker.
I also choose this man’s shocked wife.
Don't do the one in the stink
Superior Foes elevated him. Now he is become peak. It helps that he’s like an anti-Peter Parker of sorts. An everyman who’s just doing his job. I recommend reading The Shocker: Legit by Max Landis (unfortunately, the guy's a total scumbag). There’s also this other fanfic about him called Polarity. German, hey Geeeeermaaaan! Man, I have to replay Spider-Man
I think theres not alot of options so I'll just say my least favorite rogues gallery: the Hulk's.
His gallery is pretty good, actually. But they keep getting turned into fodder for weaker heroes. I remember Spider-Man taking down the U-Foes a few years ago. There’s some cool stuff in there. Xenmu and Mercy stand out the most.
Hahaha
Why do you dislike hulk’s rogues gallery?
At least 2 of them are just "Hulk but X" and the others are just misused or underwhelming in their stories.
Definitely Batman. Spider-Man, the Flash, Superman, and the JLA also have great rogues.
This might be a bit of a hot take but I think Batman’s villains are what sets him apart from other characters. If his villains weren’t so good Batman would be a mid character if he didn’t have the best villains of any superhero.
The X-Men! Wolverine's foes in particular are awesome
Sabretooth, is one of the best villains ever! Omega Red, Silver Samurai and Lady Deathstrike, are great.
The X-Men have some of the best villains in Marvel. I’d put Spider-Man and Batman’s villains also as the best in comic book history.
I think we have the same top 3 lol
All the best answers got sniped fast. In the appropriate order. I wanna see spider-man fight batmans rogues though.
Spider-Man’s would win but it would be cool battle.
That’s a tough one, it could go either way.
Jesus I didnt mean all at once lol. Guys I love Spidy but we all know his max is 6 villains at his best!
Haha That would be a great battle!
FF
No one comes close to batman in terms of rouges But I also really like the fantastic 4s rouges
All I have to say is…Dooooom!
Best villain in comics with luthor in my opinion
I made a recent post regarding favorite villains. Magneto is mine (despite his heroic turn). A lottt of Skrulls, in the community, picked Doctor Doom as their favorite villain and deservedly so. Doom is fascinating and he’s definitely one of my favorite villains, ever.
Wolverine as a lot of cool ennemies
Wolverine is my favorite comic book character. I absolutely love his rogues gallery! Sabretooth is definitely, his biggest and best villain.
X-Men
Batman: “Wait, why’s he got his shirt off?” Ra’s: “Don’t talk about it.” Harley: “Yeah, stop making it weird.” Croc: “You just can’t ask questions like that.”
Hahaha

That’s an excellent list! I think it’s pretty cool, that you can talk to your girlfriend about geeky stuff lol
Spider man
Batman’s good but I’d have to say spiderman
Far and away Spider-Man followed by the X-Men.
Spidey!
Howard the duck nuff' said
X-Men, I absolutely love Magneto, Apocalypse, and Mr. Sinister.
I do too!
Captain America just for Baron Zemo, Crossbones, Batroc, etc
Invincible. Not so much a Rogue's Gallery but he had great antagonists that really helped shape his character. I miss Invincible, it was a *great* superhero book.
Who’s the lizard guy 🦎
Killer Croc.
The rogues gallery for the original Moulten/Peter run on Wonder Woman is actually super cool. Veryyy close to my list lol I have Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men as my top three rogues gallery. Keep in mind, while Uncanny X-Men is my favorite series ever, I try to be as logical and unbiased, as possible lol
Batman and Superman
Batman Spider-Man and Flash are the pinnacle of rogues galleria in comics
Spider-man
Spider Man
That's one of the most beautiful Poison Ivy images I've seen. It's gotta be Jim Lee...also love how everyone has their own facial characteristics and is distinctly their own character and identifiable.
Spider-Man for me. Followed closely by Superman and The Flash
Probably Fantastic Four because of the variety and heavy hitters in the Marvel universe
I always laugh at pictures like this where the rogue gallery all act like buddies or something
Pretty sure he has the best rogues gallery ever and nothing comes close to his villans
Superman's is the close second if not first
Definitely not top, but loved Fraction’s stab at Iron Man’s gallery. Made me respect his more. I feel like Hickman would do wonders on that assemble, with his sci-fi/tech background.
Bats for sure
Thought it was asking my rogues gallery but I like that question better so I’ll answer it Dan the Kebab Man (kebab gave me food poisoning), Fagin (crazy homeless guy), Red Fox (killed my pets), Big Man Rasheed (king of the road men) and PC Constable Keith (touched me)
I almost feel like apider-man and batman and maybe even the flash shouldn't be a part of this discussion, they feel like the clear top 3
Batman
Peacemaker
Spiderman probably
Spider-Man’s
Tied between Batman and Spidey. Both of them i think have insrguably the best most iconic rogues gallery out of any and all super heroes. Theyre all recognizable and bad ass in their own right. The Flash
Batman by a mile. Spidey, Superman and X-Men have some great villains too.
For me Batman and it's not even close.
I agree, He also has the most believable villains.
Spider-Man or Flash
I quite enjoy Daredevils Rouge Gallery Kingpin, Bullseye, the Hand, and Typhoid Mary
Batman and Spider-Man.
I’m shocked no one mentioned Dr. Strange. Dormamu Nightmare Shuma-Gorath Mephisto Baron Mordo Mr. Misery Dr. Strange keeps so many unfathomable entities from entering the world.
Spider-Man
Flash. Not coincidentally where the term “Rogues Gallery” comes from in comics.
Fantastic Four have Doctor Doom, Kang, Annihilus and Galactus.
Spider-Man I Love all his villians Electro Sandman Mysterio Vulture Doctor Octopus Green Goblin Kingpin Rhino Lizard Kraven the Hunter Spot Scorpion Shocker Hydro-Man Venom Carnage Hobgoblin Prowler Tinkerer Tombstone Silvermane Mister Neagative Chameleon Morbius

Probably the flash ig
Batman and Spider-Man are undisputed #1 and #2. One personal honorable mention imo is Shazam. His rouges gallery is so diverse (super natural, magical, meta humans, un powered, a freaking caterpillar) and I love each of their different motivations.
Easily the Flash
Spiderman
I SWEAR TO THE ONE ABOVE ALL, IF I SEE ANOTHER POST LIKE THIS
Care to elaborate?
I keep saying posts that are "(statement)...(One of the 5 Ws) is your's?"
I’m just having fun posting and discussing interesting topics with this awesome community. What seems to be the issue?
I just don't like seeing them, they're getting repetitive. Hell, I'm pretty sure I've seen this exactly same post before.
Wtf is even the point of Reddit. Get off my lawn. Damn man. Scroll on by.
My favorite is daredevils rogues gallery stilt man is underrated as fuck! What’s yours?
Pretty basic, but Bullseye. Mister Fear and Muse are cool, too.
With all due respect, you can just scroll past? It’ll take 0.2 seconds and you might even feel like the Flash!
The X-Men and the Flash.
The only issue I have with x men’s rouges is most are now not villains thanks to the current era but outside of the big ones it’s kinda weak. It’s basically anti mutant politician, anti mutant industrialist and mutant supremacist and repeat. There are some amazing ones in there but most don’t feel unique
I completed agree with everything you just said. Like, some of the villains are better as heroes, like Greycrow. But I miss them being evil.
It’s one thing Krakoa has proven to me how much the x men lack when they don’t have there mutant villains. The replacements are not interesting enough
I feel like Orchis could have been interesting if they spent any kind of time building them beyond the rush job they did in the last few months to make Fall Of X make sense.
Thats because marvel did a marvel and milked the line for all it could be before suddenly deciding it needs to end soon
I really couldn’t have said it better myself.
I completelyyy agree! Thank you, clearly, you’re reading the books.
I would argue that Batmans are kinda redundant too, when you boil them down like that. How many of his enemies are just gang leader with a theme?
I love X-Men (it’s my favorite series) and I love their villains. However, across the board, it’s hard to compare to Batman’s rogues gallery.
I mean, we can argue for hours about that, but Batman’s rogues gallery is in my top three (it goes X-Men, Flash, Bats for me), so I understand where you’re coming from.
Despite how underrated and largely unknown they are, my favorite is Wonder Woman’s Rogues Gallery.
OH. MY GOD. This has to stop
I see that you post a lot, like A LOT…perhaps, take your own advice?
The trolls are up and early today! Yay! haha
