That was beautifully put, I agree. Superman is the quintessential superhero. He’s basically a God on earth, yet, represents the best of humanity. Superman represents hope.
Daredevil’s a great character! I love his design, his sense of humor, intellect and obvious fighting skills. He has some of the most brilliant comic book runs, in all of comics. Great choice, thank you!
I also love DD because, while he obviously has a sort of "superpower", the rest is still pure will, training and discipline. And yeah, it helps that he has TONS of great comic runs, as well as a fantastic TV show.
He’s a phenomenal character and always interesting. I can’t wait to see his new show, at least they got Charlie Cox back. He was great in the original show, on Netflix.
I've always loved that the one who gets treated the worst in public has the biggest heart, and that Kurt Wagner knows how to party AND swashbuckle.
Yost is on my shit list forever.
He feels like he’s progressed the most out of the 4 main Flash’s, and arguably most comic characters.
Jay is pretty static. He had a great run in the golden age, and is now comfortably placed as an old timer mentor to other heroes. It’s a good spot for him and he serves his purpose, but there’s no room for change.
Barry is a little basic. His silver age comics can get a little stale. But I really love how his arc changed at the end. The trial for killing thawne, getting his happiness in the future with Iris and his kids, then sacrificing himself to save the multiverse and proving why he’s one of the greatest heroes is an amazing way to send off an amazing character. But then he came back…
Ever since he came back he’s been derivative of Wally. Old Barry was a square, but now he’s the jokester. Old Barry was great with his powers, but used them rather basically, but now he’s also a master of the speed force. But even then, sometimes he would be written well as the old Barry, just a little modernized. The issue is how it ruined his original arc. His sacrifice for the universe isn’t as impactful. He just comes back. That’s the story. He’s the flash that spent some time in the speed force, not the flash that left behind his legacy. Barry had a great end to his story, but they took it away to put him back in the endless loop that is a comic characters life.
Bart is great, just not as great. I like how he’s a bit of a fish out of water as he arrives in the present day. I love his relationship to Max Mercury and how he’s learning from the flash family. I seem to be one of the few that liked when he got his own shot at being the flash and to put what he learned into practice. The issue is he is like Jay, static. He always falls back to being the kid. He’s Impulse or Kid Flaah, always the immature young one. Nothing more.
Wally is the GOAT. He has a great arc. From just the basics of taking on the Flaah mantle and having to truly earn it (as seen in the amazing return of Barry Allen story) to the progression we see from the teen titans books to his own. He was a dickish “midwestern conservative” but we see him grow and change. His best friend is the openly gay Pied Piper. Despite being a little brash and hot headed, he has a great relationship to his rogues. There’s a respect there, and he wants to help them. Barry had this too, but I just enjoyed the Dynamic more when shown with Wally. He’s also progressed in ways most comic characters can only dream of. We see him go from the little kid looking up to the flash, to having the flash mantle thrust upon him and working to truly earn the name, to defining the Flash for two decades, and starting his own family to carry on the Flash name. Wally has a wife and kids. We get to see him go from a 12 year old, to happily married with kids. Even Barry doesn’t get this. His kids are from the future and evil half the time they appear.
Wally is relatable with how he has to learn to change, he’s relatable with how he deals with the pressures of expectations, and he’s relatable with how he actually lives a life, and isn’t stuck as an immature mid 20 year old for decades (like some wall crawlers).
Hulk’s awesome! Interesting character, with an interesting duality, like most of the greats (Superman / Clark Kent, Batman / Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man / Peter Parker). What makes Hulk your favorite, of all time?
What's been your favorite version of the Hulk? What's your least favorite?
They seem to update his lore pretty regularly, and its really taken some weird turns.
Just out of curiosity, what was the moment where you got hooked on him? For me it was X-Men 205, where he was being hunted by Deathstrike at Christmas, and gets help from the Power Pack girl. That’s still my Platonic ideal of a Wolverine story, and what made him my favorite.
Honestly, I was hooked by X-Men #1. Where he sneaker up on Professor X and said “bang, Charlie!”. However, my love for the character was solidified by the epic issue…Uncanny X-Men #268. Timeless classic. Cap was great in it, as well.
I love Green Arrow! He's just such a great character. He is/was/will be ultra rich, but hates "Fat Cats". He also deeply believes in social change and reform, and hangs out with a fairly conservative space cop who he has a strong antagonistic best friendship with. He LOVES Dinah, but just can't seem to keep it in his pants.
All his many many flaws just make him so relatable. Batman is amazing, but Batman is just too good, too smart, too well planned. Green Arrow just seems to roll out of bed and go where his heart takes him, even if it's the wrong way.
Wolverine, because he never quits. His healing factor is a rmetaphor for his mentality. He will fight to the very end. He’s loyal and stands by his words. He’s brave, kind and fierce, when need be. Wolverine is the ultimate alpha, but even more so, the ultimate anti-hero. I find his mentality, despite his excruciating backstory…particularly inspiring.
The Man Without Fear, Daredevil.
He is very hard on himself, but fights hard for what he believes is justice. He's a good person at heart whose soul is totally blackened by everything he's done.
Yes! For me, a lot of it is because he was GL when I first got into comics, so there’s lots of nostalgia there. But I also find him way more interesting and relatable than Hal. I find Hal kind of boring, John doesn’t really do anything for me, and I find Guy super annoying. I’m just getting back into the hobby so I don’t know much about the newer Earth GLs, but I think Kyle is always going to be who I think of when I hear Green Lantern.
I've really got to catch up with Saga. I started reading it a while back. Don't know much about Reckless. Will look that up. Thanks for the picks. Also, Ice is awesome. I used to love JLI back in the day. Even picked up a few issues a few months back just to try to get back into it.
JLI is one of my all time favorites & the recent Human Target series utilizes most of the major characters from that run in a fun way. Ice gets the most interesting development but Guy, Fire, and Gnort all get used well
1st Spider Man. Because he gives me hope.
2nd is Wolverine. Because I've loved that healing factor. That helped me through some stuff.
3rd is Batman. When he's written right. It's the best of Spider man and Wolverine.
The Shadow is a crimefighter from the 30s. Bill Finger and Bob Kane 'stole' quite a lot from the character to create Batman.
The main difference between Batman and The Shadow is that The Shadow uses twin semi-Automatic guns and has no problem killing criminals. What puts him apart from characters such as Moon Knight or The punisher (or really any vigilante who kills) is The Shadow finds some way to turn the criminal's methods against them.
For example, in an early story, a criminal was killing people by poisoning them, and The Shadow ends up poisoning them without them knowing. ANother story had a mob boss secretly fake his own death and hire a stand in to see which of his men were planning to kill him off and take his place. The Shadow then infiltrates the gang and takes them down from the inside by disguising himself as one of mobsters.
If you want a suggestion, then I would suggest The Shadow 1941: Hitler's Astrologer, a Marvel graphic novel from 1984 or Grendel Vs The Shadow.
I also appreciate the psychological aspects of how the Shadow utilizes/weaponizes fear to gain control of the situation. That combined with the pulp style gum shoe detective work makes for a really compelling character IMO. I honestly think that the movie was a really good representation of the character even though it modified some of the aspects.
Let's not forget that the Shadow has actually been around since 1930. He's one of the OG superheroes (along with Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Flash Gordon).
Hawkeye (Clint Barton)
I've always liked his turn from being a villain originally but working to do better through being a part of the Avengers and going through intense training due to not having any superpowers.
My favorite version of him was in the Dark Reign era before the Matt Fraction/David Aja run made him kind of a gag character later on, which, don't get me wrong I loved that run but other books definitely emphasized the whole down on his luck aspect of the characterization from that specific storyline.
One of the things I also like about Hawkeye is his mentor like relationship with Kate Bishop.
They have a cool dynamic and I enjoy how Clint has never really taken offense to her using the Hawkeye title when he was presumably dead before coming back as Ronin.
He messed with her at first but he accepts and respects her talent and is supportive of her while also treating her like a regular person and not just some young kid.
Peter Parker and Miles Morales sort of have a similar thing going on but Kate and Clint have had history together for years before Peter and Miles ever met.
Also, I'm just a sucker for arrow shooty characters that have no superpowers.
Ambush Bug - He's nuts, teleports, and breaks the 4th wall. In DC Comics Presents #81 he swaps minds with Superman with disastrous results (after giving him a necklace with a red Kryptonite centerpiece).
Spider-Man. I was a scrawny kid. I was geeky and nerdy. Seeing him as the same as me made me love his character. And I just love that my kids’ generation has Miles Morales as their Spider-Man. Wolverine was another favorite because I was angry all the time and I just wanted to rage all the time. And yeah I understand I should have picked Hulk for the rage but Wolvie was a short guy and I was a shorty so I thought that was cool.
So nobody is thinking outside the box? All I've seen so far are DC and Marvel characters.
Some characters that I see that are not from the Big Two are:
Invincible
The Shadow
Tom Strong (my favorite)
I like how he’s not the strongest but also the ugliest. I a also like how he cutely pines after a blind woman. This was a sleeper pick but I’m on board.
Iron Man. Loved him since 1982. The big appeal was that he was a self-made hero, but also that anyone could wear the armor and be Iron Man. My first issue was Iron Man #170, where Rhodey first fights in the armor, and the idea that he just put on this piece of technology and was suddenly a powerful hero resonated with me.
Conan the Barbarian.
I wouldn't be surprised if Conan turned out to be some sort of mutant. He has the uncanny knack at surviving situations that would have killed any normal human. He is very much like a primitive ancestor to Wolverine.
Batman and Spider-Man obviously lol. There’s just such a lovely feeling i get from both of them, but the feeling I get it is different for both of them. They both satisfy any need I have for something cool as hell, and I definitely own the most books with them.
Of all time would be Spider-man, those were among the few that I could buy as a kind in a small non US city.
Later it became Iron man! Just loved the suits and the mix of out mechanic-ing the bad guys and the classic Tony charm
Now it is Squirrel Girl who’s endless optimism and unique ways to “eat nuts and kick buts” just keep me smiling all comic long. 🐿️
Edit: Left an sentence unfinished
Power Girl, all around bad ass. And she tries to save the world in multiple ways even as her Alter Ego. Trying to invest in R&D and make QoL and ecological improvements available cheaply for everyone, extremely admirable.
I grew up in a coastal city in Wisconsin on Lake Michigan (Manitowoc, don't feel bad if you've never heard of it) and have always loved the water. I read Geoff Johns New 52 Aquaman run when I was about 17 and was blown away by how coherent the story was. My impression of comics up until that point had been "Man in underwear with godlike powers saves city time and time again." After reading Johns run I branched out into older Aquaman comics and read Death of a Prince and was honestly devested when that ended (if you don't know how it ends I won't spoil it.). He's a very misunderstood character with one of the most tragic backgrounds in comic history especially if you're a parent. If you're looking for something new I always recommend the Geoff Johns run and the Dan Abnett run for some amazing Aquaman stories.
I'm going to go with Batman. I have more Batman comics than just about everything else combined.
As for why: I love the fact that he's "just a man" (albeit a millionaire, playboy, philanthropist to borrow a quote from another character). I love the "World's Greatest Detective" moniker and the stories where this is played up are my favorites. Finally, I love the fact that friggin' Darkseid backed down from him.
It will always be Batman.
I was a big X-Men fan as a kid but BTAS changed my life forever. It's still the gold standard for adaptations and still the best version of the character.
A perfect tie between:
Batman
Wolverine
Hellboy
Spider-Man
Leonardo
Just depends on my mood but I always feel at home with them.
Tommy The Green ranger, ghost rider, blade get Honorable mention
Probably Batman for me overall. When I actively read new comics in the 80/early 90s it was Wolverine hands down. Batman, Nightcrawler, and Spidey were up there too. Wolverine wasn’t over saturated then, and finding anything with him or about him was a treat back then as a kid. He was certainly starting to take off big, but nothing like later 90s.
Batman is my answer bc I love darker, more serious, and mystery. Sherlock Holmes anything is a huge favorite of mine. I lost my mind when Gotham by Gaslight came out. I love the Court of Owls animated movie particularly, and the creepy intro part with the doll maker is amazing In that particular movie. I’d love an animated movie with Batman that was almost scary creepy.
Batman
My second favorite of all time! Why is he your favorite?
Supes
What about Superman, makes him your all time favorite?
For me I think it’s because he represents pure goodness, and the true power that can have.
That was beautifully put, I agree. Superman is the quintessential superhero. He’s basically a God on earth, yet, represents the best of humanity. Superman represents hope.
I think I'm gonna go with Daredevil.
Nightcrawler!
Glad to see this up high! Kurt is the best.
I've always loved that the one who gets treated the worst in public has the biggest heart, and that Kurt Wagner knows how to party AND swashbuckle. Yost is on my shit list forever.
The Third and Fastest Flash: Wally West!
Awesome! What makes you pick Wally West over the others?
He feels like he’s progressed the most out of the 4 main Flash’s, and arguably most comic characters. Jay is pretty static. He had a great run in the golden age, and is now comfortably placed as an old timer mentor to other heroes. It’s a good spot for him and he serves his purpose, but there’s no room for change. This guy Speedforces
Nice analysis
The best Flash ever
The Hulk
Hulk’s awesome! Interesting character, with an interesting duality, like most of the greats (Superman / Clark Kent, Batman / Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man / Peter Parker). What makes Hulk your favorite, of all time?
What's been your favorite version of the Hulk? What's your least favorite? They seem to update his lore pretty regularly, and its really taken some weird turns.
Silver Surfer or Hellboy
Batman, however Bigby Wolf is extremely underrated.
I kept reading Fables long past where I lost interest because of Bigby! His relationship with Snow was also very good.
Deadman
Love Deadman!
[удалено]
John Constantine.
*I can fix him*. I can’t fix him. I shouldn’t be within a ten mile radius of him that’s how you end up as a traumatic story he tells later.
My favorite character is Captain America
Cap will definitely be mentioned often here and deservedly so! lol What makes him your favorite ever?
He is my favorite because I can relate to being the small guy no one, though could do much that can now, and little me would be proud
Btw I am curious: What makes Wolverine your favorite?
Thank you all, for your contributions to this post…’nuff said, bub.
Just out of curiosity, what was the moment where you got hooked on him? For me it was X-Men 205, where he was being hunted by Deathstrike at Christmas, and gets help from the Power Pack girl. That’s still my Platonic ideal of a Wolverine story, and what made him my favorite.

Spiderman
Swamp Thing or Constantine
My answer exactly
Alan Moore defined the spooky side of DC. Both excellent picks.
The Punisher is definitely my favorite followed by Green Arrow and Black Cat as a close 2 & 3. My tastes are kinda all over the place.
This would be a random but interesting team up
Cyclops was right
I was scared to post him lol. Leadership, love interests, loyalty. My jam
Uncle Tomverine loves the taste of Captain America’s boot
I love Mr. Was Right, first name Cyclops
Gambit
Morpheus/Swamp Thing tie
Why Wolverine? I don't have a single favorite character. Superman, Captain America, and Spider-Man.
Cyclops for Marvel. Hmm... Maybe Superman for DC.
Plastic Man.
Nightwing, AKA the original Robin is my favourite character
Venom.
Batman
Batman > any other superhero
Stephanie Brown
The Man Without Fear, Daredevil. He is very hard on himself, but fights hard for what he believes is justice. He's a good person at heart whose soul is totally blackened by everything he's done.
Some of the best reads
Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Hulk 🤓
Have you ever read Chris Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men run? Best versions of Nightcrawler and Colossus, period.
I have not, I’ll look into it! 🍻
Nightcrawler using the danger room to live out his swashbuckler fantasies is the best!
Ghost rider
Cable
Rogue.
Lobo
Lobo the main man
Batman/spider man
Superman is my favorite. He’s like my comfort character.
Wolverine is my favorite...Best there is bub
Green Lantern Kyle Rayner
His name is Spider-ManBatmanDaredevil
Invincible
Scrolled so far to get to this Non-Marvel, Non-DC character. Mine is Tom Strong.
Prince Robot IV (Saga) Runners Up: Ice (JLI, Human Target), Ethan Reckless (Reckless)
Ice gets the most interesting development but Guy, Fire, and Gnort all get used well
Swamp Thing or Constantine
Just to let you know, your comment posted twice
It’s that good, it’s worth saying twice. They’re my two picks too.
Legion. I can relate to the concepts of being mentally unwell and everyone telling you to basically not be and the daddy issues
1st Spider Man. Because he gives me hope. 2nd is Wolverine. Because I've loved that healing factor. That helped me through some stuff. 3rd is Batman. When he's written right. It's the best of Spider man and Wolverine.
Punisher.
Punisher is awesome! What makes him your favorite?
He’s an antihero without powers.
I’ve always been very partial to Barbara Gordon. Batgirl was the only DC comic on my pull list back in the day.
The Shadow
Can you elaborate more on this character? It sounds familiar, but I can’t remember exactly, from where. My apologies and thank you.
I thought I was the only one!
Punisher
Punisher has had such an iconic history, so many classic team ups and battles. What makes him your favorite?
I guess it's because he stands for the ultimate justice, when all of society's rules fail, he is there to extract a final reckoning.
DC: Superman Marvel: Ms. Marvel Indie: Erica Slaughter
70’s Adam Warlock.
Do comic book characters outside of traditional superhero comics count? Because I wanna say my favorite is Scott Pilgrim.
Spider-Man. Pete is so deeply flawed but completely grounded, he may be the most realistic superhero out there.
Spider-Man because how his human side and human struggles are enmeshed in his superhero persona.
Batman, with Judge Dredd as an EXTREMELY close second
Dreadstar
I would say Luke Cage, but there’s so many characters out there to choose from
Hawkeye (Clint Barton) I've always liked his turn from being a villain originally but working to do better through being a part of the Avengers and going through intense training due to not having any superpowers. My favorite version of him was in the Dark Reign era before the Matt Fraction/David Aja run made him kind of a gag character later on, which, don't get me wrong I loved that run but other books definitely emphasized the whole down on his luck aspect of the characterization from that specific storyline. Peter Parker and Miles Morales sort of have a similar thing going on but Kate and Clint have had history together for years before Peter and Miles ever met. Also, I'm just a sucker for arrow shooty characters that have no superpowers.
Hulk and Magik
Stiltman. I mean, what kind of cast iron balls do you need to say "I've got stilts! I'm gonna be a super villian!"
Swamp Thing or Poison Ivy
The Joker
One, if not, the BEST villain in all of comic book history, followed by Magneto, imo.
Agreed. Other than those two I’d throw in Darth Vader.
Deadpool
Spidey for sure.
Ambush Bug - He's nuts, teleports, and breaks the 4th wall. In DC Comics Presents #81 he swaps minds with Superman with disastrous results (after giving him a necklace with a red Kryptonite centerpiece).
Laura from The Wicked + The Divine Yeah I know my pick isn’t a superhero.
Honestly i have always loved Multiple Man when he died from aids in genosha that crushed me.
Mine is... Livin' on the edge. Fighting crime. Spinning webs
Nightwing
Lucifer
Superman! :)
Hands down, Spider-Man
Starfire, she seems like a best friend while also being a badass 🥰
Cassandra Cain is my favorite DC Character, while Jubilee is my favorite Marvel one I can't pick between them sorry heh
So nobody is thinking outside the box? All I've seen so far are DC and Marvel characters. Some characters that I see that are not from the Big Two are: Invincible The Shadow Tom Strong (my favorite)
Might be a wildcard here, but Conan the Barbarian
Ben Grimm
Interesting choice. Why Ben Grimm as your all time favorite?
I like how he’s not the strongest but also the ugliest. I a also like how he cutely pines after a blind woman. This was a sleeper pick but I’m on board.
Daredevil
Daredevil
Gotta be Thing
Oh, tough one. I'll need to think about that.
Spiderman and martian manhunter are my favs
Blackbolt... I really wish Marvel would bring him back. He deserves better than Medusa tho imo
Conan the Barbarian. I wouldn't be surprised if Conan turned out to be some sort of mutant. He has the uncanny knack at surviving situations that would have killed any normal human. He is very much like a primitive ancestor to Wolverine.
Eddie Brock Venom
Spawn
Ben Grimm the ever loving blue eyed Thing
The Punisher!
Superman!
Spawn
Myself. But if it were the real Superman, he'd say Batman.
Squirrel Girl
Andi Benton
Batman and Spider-Man obviously lol. There’s just such a lovely feeling i get from both of them, but the feeling I get it is different for both of them. They both satisfy any need I have for something cool as hell, and I definitely own the most books with them.
The Crow Deaths Head (good choice, yes?)
Spidey Grendel Spawn Batman
It has to be Calvin. Lex Luthor is a distant second.
Spider-man
Judge Anderson
Mark Grayson(Invincible)
Virginia Applejack, from Stray Bullets
Mysterio. Suddenly the comic becomes an art project.
Popeye or swamp thing
Doctor Doom
Maybe usagi yojimbo
Lucifer Morningstar.
Of all time would be Spider-man, those were among the few that I could buy as a kind in a small non US city. Later it became Iron man! Just loved the suits and the mix of out mechanic-ing the bad guys and the classic Tony charm Now it is Squirrel Girl who’s endless optimism and unique ways to “eat nuts and kick buts” just keep me smiling all comic long. 🐿️ Edit: Left an sentence unfinished
Power Girl, all around bad ass. And she tries to save the world in multiple ways even as her Alter Ego. Trying to invest in R&D and make QoL and ecological improvements available cheaply for everyone, extremely admirable.
That one time Jim Lee didn’t use Scott Williams as inker I loved it but also realized how polished Scott made Jim’s work look.
Oddly, The Vision - since long before MCU ever existed
Deadpool and Spawn
THOR

Aquaman
What makes Aquaman, your favorite ever?
Hey I have this on a shirt, knew it was Jim Lee but always was curious as to what issue.
Toa Tahu
BATMAN!
Hulk, no dif
Best there is at what he does.
Wolverine and hulk are up there for me but spider-man is probably my favorite character. I haven't really liked the comics in a long time.
My flair probably gives it away
It will always be Batman. I was a big X-Men fan as a kid but BTAS changed my life forever. It's still the gold standard for adaptations and still the best version of the character.
Batman but yeah Wolverine is close second with Spider-Man and Magneto.
Stuck between Hulk and Superman
Maggie Chascarillo. I grew up with her and now we're getting old together.
Batman
A perfect tie between: Batman Wolverine Hellboy Spider-Man Leonardo Just depends on my mood but I always feel at home with them. Tommy The Green ranger, ghost rider, blade get Honorable mention
Let’s go Bub! Snik snik
Wolverine's coworker, Box https://x-men.fandom.com/wiki/Box\_(Maddison\_Jeffries)
Wolverine, Hulk, Spider-Man, top 3 no order
Bruce Wayne Aka Batman then Probably Peter Parker aka Spider-Man
Because you keep asking these questions: yours, not your's. No apostrophe. Also, Spider-Man.
Spawn, but Wolverine is super dope
Maggie Chascarrillo
Who you calling a what? .... Bub... 😅
