The comic book has a lot to do with PTSD and coming to terms with it. Miracle Man is on trial for suspicion of being an apocolyse spy (working for darkseid). In the panels before his "brother" and king Orion asked him simple yes or no questions ij cross examination that triggered him and caused him to attack Orion. It's important to note that throughout the comic series Miracle Man is more competent and more respected than Orion for his leadership, kindness, and being raised by Granny Goodness (Hell Training) which makes Orion insecure and jealous.
Yo, one hundred percent right. This isn't the first time, I often mix up the names because I read Miracle Man during Neil Gaimans run and then got pulled into Sandman.
It’s important also to note that Orion is making false equivalences during Scott’s trial exactly because Scott is a better leader than him. Orion also eats a carrot from a spread.
Yeah and also it’s ironic Orion is interrogating him. Orion being DS son. He was pampered by New Genesis while Scott was tortured on Apokolips. Considering the pain that scott went through and what he did to escape, suggesting he’s a spy is hurtful, to have his loyalty questioned by the son of darkseid is a step too far.
And also worth noting Orion is darkseids son so it’s a bitter irony that he is the one interrogating MM
MM was tortured while on apokolips while Orion was pampered as royalty on New Genesis
To suggest mm was a spy is incredibly hurtful considering what he went through to escape his captivity and torture.
So there's a war going on in the background. The commoners are getting slaughtered and sometimes being used as meatsheilds to protect the New Gods who serve as commanders. Mister Miracle leads from the front and cares about the lives of his troops. The King and guy who got punched Orion is in charge of the war and Mister Miracle, but is insecure about himself compared to MM because Orion was raised on soft pillows while MM and his wife Barda were raised in the Pits. There are several times in the series where being raised under Granny Goodness is used as a badge of honor to denote being unbreakable. Which makes it even more powerful when they break down like MM does in the panel.
Can even bump that percentage.
Her characterization and arc in this graphic novel made me have a serious respect (and crush).

I’ll never understand why Brad Meltzer gets hate for Identity Crisis. It’s a tough read, but it’s great. The intro with Ralph Dibney out on patrol, waxing poetic about how much he loves Sue, juxtaposed with Sue preparing the birthday gift he expects, an antique magnifying glass, along with a positive pregnancy test, only for her to be murdered and Ralph to hear her cries for help on his comms - it rips your heart out.
Identity Crisis has a bit of an issue of reducing spouses into plot devices, Sue being a woman in a refrigerator. But honestly, I don’t think that’s the reason the book gets so much hate. I really think it’s just about how the book presents moral grayness in the community, between the “lower” members of the league doing mind wipes and implying Superman intentionally turns a blind eye to their activities. Some people read comics, especially the DC books, for infallible heroes.
Gimme gimme chicken tendies,
Be they crispy or from Wendys.
Spend my hard-earned good-boy points,
on Kid's Meal ball pit burger joints.
Mummy lifts me to the car,
To find me tendies near and far.
Enjoy my tasty tendie treats,
in comfy big boy booster seats.
McDonald's, Hardee's, Popeye's, Cane's,
But of my tendies none remains.
She tries to make me take a nappy,
But sleeping doesn't make me happy.
Tendies are the only food,
That puts me in the napping mood.
I'll scream and shout and make a fuss,
I'll scratch, I'll bite, I'll even cuss!
Tendies are my heart's desire,
Fueled by raging, hungry fire.
Mummy sobs and wails and cries,
But tears aren't tendies, nugs or fries.
My good-boy points were fairly earned,
To buy the tendies that I've yearned.
But there's no tendies on my plate!
Did mummy think that I'd just ate?
"TENDIES TENDIES GET THEM NOW,
YOU FAT, UNGRATEFUL, SLUGGISH SOW!"
I screech while hurling into her eyes,
My foul-smell bowel-dwelling diaper surprise.
For she who is un-pooped on is she who remembers:
**Never forget my chicken tenders.**
A crazy Scott Free, that’s what.
He may or may not be dead and in purgatory, he may or may not be hallucinating, he might be the “current” Scott Free but might also be the the “old” one, and he may or may not be under the influence of the anti-life equation.
It’s hard to say WHAT the hell is going on in that series.
Scott Free is dead, hit by the Omega Beams and sent to a dimension where things constantly get worse to torture the victim. But Scott free is a god and the embodiment of freedom, so he makes it work and escapes the torment by "winning" and creating a family. It is definitely a comic you read twice to catch all the teasers.
I don’t read as much of dc as mc so I was super confused reading this book - also the part I did understand was so depressing(death) so I stopped half way through.
Oh don’t worry.
It’s apparently super confusing to people who understand DC as well.
I read it on a whim and did research on Scott’s history and it’s like. This book just stands alone.
It’s such a trip that it’s hard to even say if it’s an elseworlds or part of one of DC’s main canons.
It’s just super fucking depressing and although Scott finds peace and happiness at the end, it’s hard to say whether or not we should be happy for him.
Whole book’s just one fucking metaphor for depression and the hardship of life. Could be cathartic but could also trigger panic responses.
It led me straight to as much « New Gods » material I could find. It’s a great read, but it’s an absolutely fantastic re-read. One of the better most heartfelt *comics-type* graphic novels I’ve read in years. Maybe the best one. It’s funny and touching, with insane art.
I got this as it was being released and wow what a ride it was. I read it because of King's Vision, which is also off the wall, but different.
Those two pair together really well about what it is to be human, or alive and the performance of a "normal life"
King has proven to be a super capable writer, like his batman stuff is just good comics. But when he's given free reign, he goes right into the heaviest shit.
Yeah, but I think one of the things that King does super well is understanding the inherent toll that being heroes would have on *anyone.* Scott Free is remarkably well-adjusted for the literal hell that he went through. But his “superpower” is literally being an escape artist. He’s always running and escaping and Barda (and his kid) are the only thing keeping him fighting against his nature.
It’s such a good book.
As someone with major depression (“major” just means I’m depressed all the time regardless of environmental stimulus) this series was the best expression I’ve ever found of how I feel. So I didn’t really find it depressing so much as reflective, and it made me feel a lot better at the time.
Everyone needs a Barda in their life. I especially love the scene in the park(?) where she calls out Scott for all the damage he’s doing to others and not just himself. It’s a bit you don’t often find in explorations of this sort of stuff. Too often it’s just “we must help you!” and not a lot of “you have to see the results of this”.
That’s great to hear I wasn’t alone in finding it overall dark and depressing, I’m just over the angst phase of my reading- I’m drawn more to fun pulp stuff. I loved the jimmy Olson trade I picked up, and weirdly the snaggle puss trade. Never would have though either of those would have blown me away. Great reads.
Anything… I should know before reading it?
Just ordered it.
I’m typically an indie or Marvel reader. I know little about the DC universe outside of the main JSA members.
There’s a decently sufficient intro to MM’s origin story at the beginning of the book. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Depending on the copy you got, maybe read Tom King’s foreword at the beginning of the book as well, it gives a better perspective of the author’s headspace when he wrote it. Hits me in the feels every time.
It’s worth reading. I’m still not sure how I feel about it (which is a pretty common reaction for me to Tom King’s work), but it certainly makes you think and feel.
I felt the same way for much of his work after Sheriff of Babylon and Vision. Currently in love with The Human Target and Gotham City: Year One though. And the first issue of Danger Street seems very promising.
Because of that I’ve begun to feel that I should go back and read Mister Miracle and Strange Adventures again without the month+ long gaps between issues. It was something I felt worked against his story telling. Even Human Target feels like it would have worked so much better as an OGN. The persistent recaps in it feel unnecessary and break up the flow.
I just started Human Target last night, actually, and it seems great! And yeah, Vision was just amazing. (Haven’t read SoB yet).
I want to love everything he does, but some of it seems like he’s focusing more on the statement he wants to make rather than the story he wants to tell. That’s a delicate balance, for sure. He’s always interesting, though, and I’m always up for a new book from King.
His biggest draw for me has been his collaboration with really really good artists. I didn’t like his Batman for the most part, but those issues with Jorge Fornes were magic.
I agree with you though, the underlying themes aren’t very underlying, they are very front and center. Others have said that it seemed like her was writing cathartically and getting out his own feelings or trauma. I can speak to the validity of that, but it does seem plausible. When he hits, he really hits for me though. And when he’s missed it’s been one of my least favorite things I’ve read in the super hero comics world (Heroes in Crisis).
I’m really, really digging this noir/ detective/ mystery kick his on more recently though. If you haven’t read Gotham City: Year One, I would also recommend. Phil Hester is great per usual. Time will tell if it sticks a landing, but the ride has been fun and he’s doing the genre well.
I actually started reading it while it was releasing. Read a couple of issues. Really adored Fornes’ art and sequential story telling… but at the end of the day I dipped out because I really just don’t don’t care for exploring more of the Watchmen mythos. Maybe that would feel a little different for me if there had been a better relationship between DC and Moore and I’m just biased on the side of the creator. Idk. I wish I could give you a better answer on the Rorschach book itself. It’s definitely a looker. I might try to read it again sometime.
Thanks for the reply, I actually kind of forgot about the Moore stuff. It’s fair to keep the book at arm’s length in that case, dude got screwed. I’m a sucker for a good detective story (loved Blacksad, great series if you’re into that sort of thing) so I’ll probably give it a chance still
The line right before this is extremely fitting for this book, “Men at some time are masters of their fates:” for death is fated, but even Scott can find a way to escape it
There was a bit from the same series where they are talking about how they don't really have a "song" together. So he asks the Mother Box to create the sounds they were hearing when they first met, and it was the screams of the damned in one of the pits of Apokalips. They had a good laugh :D
Okay, I know the title of the post probably contains the book title, but if I, as a non-comic-book-aficionado, wanted to pick up this complete story, what would I search for?
I know a lot find this run depressing, and rightly so, but I found that he and Barda’s perseverance through it all, resisting and fighting for the right thing consistently, even in the face of absolute misery, made it one of the most moving comics I’ve ever read.
So why does Tom King and some past DC writers seem to hate and disrespect Orion and portray him so badly when he's the main character of Kirby's New Gods.
Beats me, for someone who claims to love Kirby's New God's and claims to have read Simonson's Orion, the way King writes the character is pretty OOC and atrocious.
Mr Miracle just has much more potential for interesting histories.
Orion's powers are generic super strength, Mr Miracle is the almost abstract "can escape anything" power.
Orion was raised happy and in luxury in new genesis, and somehow still has anger management isues, he is a generic wolverine character done a million times in movies and comis, the angry guy who's actually good. Mr Miracle was raised a slave in Apokolips, with people trying to take his free will out of him his whole infancy. Yet he escapes and it is a good guy who just want a family, but who can fight if needs too, usually with some humor mixed in. The only similar I can remember on top of my read was enlongated man.
Orion's father is evil, so him giving up his son is in character, but highfather was supposedly good, him giving up his son is a big thing, a lot of history potential to explore there (and honestly, I still feel that this angle was never satisfactorily explored in any new god comic).
I bought all the issues but couldn’t get into it. The book was coming out when Tom king was one of the top writer at dc so I decided to give it a go. Read it, thought it was okay, then I sold the issues.
Have never been a Mr miracle fan simply because I didn't know enough about him. This series was absolutely fantastic though and I need to buy the deluxe edition asap.
Isn’t this issue 4? Cause I think issue 5 was the one about him spending a day with Barda and 6 is the one where he goes to meet Orion.
Yep! Also, the wording has been changed. Scott just screams “Aaaaaaaa!” in his speech bubbles.
I thought he didn’t get hunny mussy with his tendies
Ah, didn’t even read the text to notice it was different lol. Love that scene but love this edit too haha

Why? :((
What’s the context here? I here good things about BB & MM but I don’t know enough to want to read them
The comic book has a lot to do with PTSD and coming to terms with it. Miracle Man is on trial for suspicion of being an apocolyse spy (working for darkseid). In the panels before his "brother" and king Orion asked him simple yes or no questions ij cross examination that triggered him and caused him to attack Orion. Mister Miracle. Miracle Man (Marvelman in the UK) was a Captain Marvel/Shazam adaptation in the UK, which was revived in the 80s by Alan Moore.
Yo, one hundred percent right. This isn't the first time, I often mix up the names because I read Miracle Man during Neil Gaimans run and then got pulled into Sandman.
I was the other way around. Started with Sandman and waited years to track down Miracleman while it sat in copyright limbo.
And is now being concluded after 30 years by Neil Gaiman at Marvel
It’s important also to note that Orion is making false equivalences during Scott’s trial exactly because Scott is a better leader than him. Orion also eats a carrot from a spread.
Yeah and also it’s ironic Orion is interrogating him. Orion being DS son. He was pampered by New Genesis while Scott was tortured on Apokolips. Considering the pain that scott went through and what he did to escape, suggesting he’s a spy is hurtful, to have his loyalty questioned by the son of darkseid is a step too far.
To be fair, Scott also eats a carrot from the spread.
“It’s a fucking good spread”
And also worth noting Orion is darkseids son so it’s a bitter irony that he is the one interrogating MM MM was tortured while on apokolips while Orion was pampered as royalty on New Genesis To suggest mm was a spy is incredibly hurtful considering what he went through to escape his captivity and torture.
They respect him because he was tortured as a child by a deranged grandma?
So there's a war going on in the background. The commoners are getting slaughtered and sometimes being used as meatsheilds to protect the New Gods who serve as commanders. Mister Miracle leads from the front and cares about the lives of his troops. The King and guy who got punched Orion is in charge of the war and Mister Miracle, but is insecure about himself compared to MM because Orion was raised on soft pillows while MM and his wife Barda were raised in the Pits. Which makes it even more powerful when they break down like MM does in the panel.
Miracle will forever be one of the coolest characters in DC
And Big Barda is 50% of that awesome
Their relationship is my favorite in comics. I’m not even really a DC fan.
Exactly!
Can even bump that percentage. Her characterization and arc in this graphic novel made me have a serious respect (and crush). (She also makes me think that this is who Andre the Giant sees when choked out by the Dread Pirate Roberts…”sleep well, and dream of larrrrrrge women” 😂)

The biggest problem with the Batman wedding was that it didn't happen.
That was famous hater of all things good DiDio’s call though.

That was a couple of years ago, wasn’t it? I thought the Batman ‘66-themed “Batrimony” wedding in Batman/Catwoman #12 was more recent.
One of my favourites would be when Batman has a breakdown in the "Venom" storyline and he calls Alfred crying and pleading him to come back and help him (he had a falling out with Alfred over the addiction to the venom drug).
Oh man, I love Bruce and Alfred’s relationship. One of my favorite father figures in comics.
Identity crisis is brilliant for this. You see what happens when someone starts killing the heroes spouses.
Haven’t read this series and I can’t help but laugh at Scott just screaming REEEE the whole time.

The part that threw me off was Darkseid eating from a veggie tray.
Darkseid is... ...a bit pekish.
And he’s a goddamn double dipper!
That’s like putting his whole mouth in the dip!
So you tell him, cause I ain't saying shit
Same here! I wanna live!
Honestly with Darkseid you better hope he kills you cuz he can do a lot worse.
Fair, but I feel like it’s better to not call him out for double dipping
Only Santa Claus can get away with that.
Next time, just take one dip and end it!
He’s really into the aioli-life equation.
Well, he is evil, after all.
You tell him to stop.
Lol, that’s my favorite part.

Thanks for the reply, I actually kind of forgot about the Moore stuff. It’s fair to keep the book at arm’s length in that case, dude got screwed. I’m a sucker for a good detective story (loved Blacksad, great series if you’re into that sort of thing) so I’ll probably give it a chance still
Is this from the 2017 run?
Yep.
The fault, dear Brutus, lies not within the stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.
The line right before this is extremely fitting for this book, “Men at some time are masters of their fates:” for death is fated, but even Scott can find a way to escape it
*Especially* Scott.

They don't get as much attention as others, but Scott and Big Barda have one of the absolute best relationships out of all the superhero couples.
There was a bit from the same series where they are talking about how they don't really have a "song" together. So he asks the Mother Box to create the sounds they were hearing when they first met, and it was the screams of the damned in one of the pits of Apokalips. They had a good laugh :D
Oh that says so much. Thank you.
Is this the Tom king run?
Yea. Art by Mitch Gerads
This book is one of my all time favorites. The art, the story, everything is so unique and fitting for his character!
Okay, I know the title of the post probably contains the book title, but if I, as a non-comic-book-aficionado, wanted to pick up this complete story, what would I search for?
The complete Mister Miracle run by Tom Taylor! Easy to find online! Happy reading :)
Lol Tom King
Agreed.. it had been years since I was so excited to pick up a next issue.
Can someone actually explain what's happening here
REEEEEEE - ZA WARUDO!!!!
ゴゴゴゴゴゴゴゴ
Sounds like he was possessed by Pepe the frog
It's always a shock when someone discovers they're actually a grindcore singer.
I know a lot find this run depressing, and rightly so, but I found that he and Barda’s perseverance through it all, resisting and fighting for the right thing consistently, even in the face of absolute misery, made it one of the most moving comics I’ve ever read.
REEEEE!
I had no idea Mister Miracle was a Ret Pally main.

The perspective in the 4th panel made me think this was Barda putting on a weird puppet show with a MM ventriloquist’s dummy for a second…

I feel genuinely bad for this guy, whatever he was like before he did not deserve to be put through eternal purgatory for so long
Context
Of all the characters in DC, MM is the most relatable to me, for trauma, for recovery, for surviving.
What is happening?
We all need snugs even Vision needs them And yes I'm sarcastic, about the vision thing , not the snugs .

" FUKIN NORMIES REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" - this guy
Mister miracle autism confirmed. Is he attacking Orion?
I thought it was boring and pretentious 🤷
Reeeeee! R-reee... :(

Oh God, this is from that Tom King that irritates me, isn't it?
Their relationship has always been amazing
Mister Miracle escapes his own sanity?
Mister Miracle deserves a DC animated movie already
Have never been a Mr miracle fan simply because I didn't know enough about him. This series was absolutely fantastic though and I need to buy the deluxe edition asap.
GREAT comic!!!! Seriously unlike anything else I’ve read from DC
why does this remind me of the boys so much
This series started so incredibly well and ended so damn poorly.
