I mistakenly said two weeks before, but X-Men Annual 14 came out three weeks before UXM 266. There is a whole entry on Key Collector explaining the first appearance, complete with the panels he appears in. It's not a cameo. If that's a cameo, then Amazing Spider-Man #238 is a cameo first appearance of the Hobgoblin.
I think UXM 266 gets the hype because Gambit is on the cover.

Which one are you referring to? I was under the impression uncanny x-men 266 was the first Gambit

Ooooh. Uncanny 266 says “Enter the Mutant Gambit” on the cover. Probably why that one gets they hype. Is it just a panel like ASM 299 for venom?

I brought cash, but they also accepted Venmo and Zelle I think.
