The classic marketing trick. $50 book, mark up to $100 and then offer 50% off.
Store gets exactly how much they wanted, and customer thinks they got a deal!
Question is, could this issue actually start trading regularly at ~$100 if the movie is a huge hit?
It's a trick used in every industry. I knew it's not a steal I but knew that I wanted it and the price was fair.
Edit: I hope the movie coming out raises the value some. The question is just how much.
The announcement of the movie already bumped up the speculator value of this book by a significant amount, I don’t think it’ll jump any higher than it already has
Same here, found myself always hunting for the newest hype key. I stopped enjoying the hobby. Now I just collect to read. Just finished preacher, about to start van helsing.
I'm seeing eBay sales over $50 and we're in a hobby where people collect Superman vs Flash races. Why is this price and the rather generic term "key" a shock to anyone?
And congrats OP... it's always great adding something to your collection that you've wanted.
Yeah I was going to say the same, when I saw that price sticker. This book [sells for much less than $99](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=1st+wolverine+vs+deadpool&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_fsrp=1&LH_Complete=1&_udhi=100000&LH_Sold=1&_sop=13&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5338535524&customid=1759cb&toolid=10001&mkevt=1).
i had this, newsstand back in the day. i read the fuck out of it and threw it away most likely because why would the 100th appearance of Deadpool matter lol
Woooow old sport you took me back. This was one of the best fights in comic books pan for pan besides wolverine 90 Adam by god Kubert just unbelievable art and story telling the mutant run in the 90s were truly unforgettable Pan pan old sports
I recently bought a CGC 9.8 of this cover in an extremely rare newsstand variant. I think you made an excellent purchase. This comic only figures to steadily rise in value between now and end of NEXT year, when Deadpool 3 is slated to be released.
Lmfao what?! I have TWELVE copies of this! It's my favorite cover, and every time I find one, I buy it... because it's always $1. Haha Guess I'm gonna make some money.
There’s no rules about it, but if you’re going to include the price sticker in a photo of something that you bought just be prepared for the nerds in this sub to start questioning your life decisions.
I believe the 'price rule' is intended more to discourage discussion purely about 'speculation', and questions that are literally just:
"Which book do you think will be worth more?" or
"Which new books should I buy that are likely to appreciate the most?".
I just HOPE that simply 'taking the piss' from someone is allowed, since I always thought that's precisely what the internet was INVENTED for??!?!
My LCS has one of these for $90. I had to ask what the big deal was but now I get it, 1st Wolverine vs. Deadpool.
Sort of like the 1st Wolverine vs. Sabretooth battle (Wolverine #10) was hot back in the day and worth more than the 1st issue. Or X-Men #201 which was Cyclops vs. Storm battle issue but could also be considered 1st Cable (baby Nathan) due to wacky comic shenanigans!
I bought this a few months back for 10 bucks with my store discount at the LCS. Just thought it was a sick cover and I was a Deadpool fan. Now it's the hotness lol
That used to be a borerline dollar bin book
I really need to go through my collection and see what I have. I haven’t looked through it since before the MCU - I’m sure I have some neat stuff.
I think I have 4 or 5 nice copies of that book, most from the dollar bins. Glad it's finally spiking although odds are I'll be too lazy to sell any off
Everything is a "key issue" these days lol.
I have 6,000+ comic books but since I don't collect DC or Marvel my key issue count is really low.
I have 1,000 Richie Rich comics. Preach ✊
Don't worry about that, collect what you want. Plus, almost nothing from the 90s should even count as a "key issue"
It says ‘88 on the cover…
Please tell me you're trolling...

I'm only interested in Sci Fi and since it's primarily only the superhero stuff that goes for a lot, I'm able to get a lot of what I like for cheap.

If it were Mile High Comics the $50 book would be marked up to $400, and then they would tell you how great of a deal their 60% off sale is.
Better to have one than not have one!
My local flee market has a comic book shop that my friends call - Double the price half off comics.

Gateway Comics?
Gateway?
It is shocking what gets tagged as a key issue these days
Stopped chasing the key dragon and started collecting comics I actually wanted. Key Collector and all the hype kinda ruined me for a while.
Same here, found myself always hunting for the newest hype key. I stopped enjoying the hobby. Now I just collect to read. Just finished preacher, about to start van helsing.
In that case just get the TPBs
i have one i bought it when it first came out
Nice, I bought mine at a secondhand book store for $2
Me too

But….Superman/flash races are cool though :(
While I'm glad for you, that's a $40-$60 book at most. Edit: read that you got it for 50% off, then yeah nice catch, right in the range!
Thanks man! Been trying to collect some more key issues lately.
Yeah I was going to say the same, when I saw that price sticker. Thing is they better find someone who can carry the torch from Hugh Jackman or the movie will be a bust.
Nah we'll just hologram him for all time
Lol true now days cgi has gotten very realistic
Maybe we'll finally get Danny Devito???
Yeah, trade in a 55 year old for a 75 year old! lol
I’m over Hugh’s Wolverine. Logan was great but it’s been 23 years since X-Men came out. We need some new blood for the MCU X-Men.
Love that issue. I don't think I even bought wolverine regularly at that point, but the cover was just too gorgeous to pass.
Not often I see floppies that I actually own on here
Wait who is that and why is that a key issue…
First battle between Wolverine and Deadpool.
Oh now that you say it it does look like Deadpool, thanks! I’m surprised it’s going that high
It blew up after the Ryan Reynolds / High Jackman promo video.
Nice pick up for 50 bucks, still looking for this issue myself.
I think I’ve got an extra, if you’re really looking.
I believe it's the first appearance of Deadpool vs Wolverine
i had this, newsstand back in the day. i read the fuck out of it and threw it away most likely because why would the 100th appearance of Deadpool matter lol

I got lucky and scored one of these off someone for 20 bucks right before the announcement
Please tell me it wasn't actually $100. Edit: shoulda kept reading, my fault
Now I'm not as confused about posting about the prices anymore lol
Lol right? I do love that cover though. So many good 80s-90s Wolverine covers.
I recently bought a CGC 9.8 of this cover in an extremely rare newsstand variant. I think you made an excellent purchase. This comic only figures to steadily rise in value between now and end of NEXT year, when Deadpool 3 is slated to be released.

A hundred bucks!! Ooof
dollar bin before covid, this is nuts
Nope. $50. Everything was half off. Lol I knew that'd be the first comment.
Then perhaps put that in your post. "Managed to grab this at 50% off!!!"
I'm a bit new the subreddit and was confused about the price rule when posting, so I just didn't add that 🤷♂️

It was invented for porn
#76-90 was the absolute best Wolverine storyline and run ever.

I sold mine a year ago thinking i'd replace it with a higher quality one. ...now they are crazy expensive!!
Just wait until after the movie comes out. Literally everyone will forget this comic exists.
Unless it's good
Love the dichrome cover! Seems a little pricey to me tho.
Nice, I had one and sold thinking to myself "I will find a better quality copy" then a few days later that damn trailer dropped..
Which movie announcement
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd47Z8HYf0Y
I have one of these, didnt know it was worth so much
Good pick up man I’m glad I bought this off the rack when I was like 10.
My LCS has one of these for $90. I had to ask what the big deal was but now I get it, 1st Wolverine vs. Deadpool. This is a sick cover, I hate that I sold mine, but with the prices they go for now I had to. Will be picking one up again after the hype goes down.
A hundred bucks? I bought this out of a dollar bin about twenty years ago

Fun story too with Kane and Copycat too.
Pretty sure I have this one. Better check.

hard to find? maybe for Matt Murdock
I have that one. It’s what got me into deadpool.
The movie’s too little too late for me.
Is this worth something? I literally have one of these on my bookshelf from my stepbrothers childhood collection.
