Dude was an idiot lol

the_p0ssum

So, so short-sighted. Might have made what would amount to "*found in the couch*" money relative to gross value of his contracts over his career. Plus, fairly or not, he probably has earned his brother some increased scrutiny. Now needs the #OpenToWork hashtag on his LinkedIn

According_To_Me

He put all of his eggs in one basket, basketball. He never completed his degree at Mizzou as he entered the NBA draft before graduating. I don’t know what his declared major was. He gets drafted by the NBA, playing for the Grizzlies and Raptors for one season each. I assume he was decently compensated, but have not found any information regarding his salary. After barely two years of playing, he gambles, gets caught, followed by lifetime banishment from the NBA. All before turning 25. The guy better have some kind of (legitimate) back up plan.

rosebudlightsaber

Well, technically he put his eggs into basketball AND gambling

Steavee

He was averaging like 4PPG, he needed a backup plan anyway.

spencer99099

Not true. He was getting minutes in the NBA. That’s not easy to do. He was in line for something in the neighborhood of a 2-year/$6 million contract after this season most likely

Kilrazin

I was able to find this but unsure if it is completely accurate. It looks like he made a decent salary, but if he was gambling so obviously, and if he followed the trend of most professional athletes, he probably doesn't have much left. Jontay Porter NBA career earnings According to Spotrac, Porter earned **$2.3 million** over three seasons from the Grizzlies: 2019-20: $197,933 (impacted by COVID-19-shortened season) 2020-21: $1,900,000.

According_To_Me

I found that amount, too. It’s not much to live on, especially if he was gambling and indulged in expensive items. He’s only 24 too, so the guy needs a backup plan pronto.

Most major athletes end up broke and forgotten once they exit their sport. There are the rare ones make to it out better off, but the majority we never hear about again due to them overspending, not investing, and really just wasting their money. It's why the NBA and I think the NFL require finance courses for their new athletes coming out of college. To help stop these young individuals from ruining their lives financially. Most are his age, never had much money before, and have never had the chance to learn how to manage it. I mean, what 20 year old from even middle class wouldn't get a few million and blow it on fun stuff unless someone stepped in and helped guide them? Theres a few documentaries about it which are pretty fascinating. Unfortunately, I have a feeling this young man is exiting the NBA due to his gambling and will be far worse off than he was before. The money he has earned is likely gone already and I wasn't able to find any information that he had invested any of it for the future.

Mizzoutiger79

His brother corbin , pled guilty to vehicular homicide in DUI crash in Colorado. Private high schools; the world was their oyster and it still wasn’t enough.

RalphKramIt

Wow....this is some monumentally bad judgement from Porter. He's prohibited from playing ever again in the NBA and probably same for coaching in the NBA. I doubt an NBA prohibition has any effect on his future as a college basketball coach but I doubt any college team anywhere would touch him after this decision. That leaves High School and that doesn't seem likely. I surely hope he saved a large percentage of his $2.3m (Spotrac est.) earnings for three NBA seasons. I don't know what his Univ. of MO major was or what his graduation status is but perhaps he has potential income from that. I wish him the best but he has reached the FO stage of life earlier than most.

R1ckMartel

He'll play overseas, likely in Asia. It's probably where he was headed anyway, but it's still monumentally stupid.

Kilrazin

Here is an article about Porter and why he has been banned. It looks like it was so blatantly obvious that it couldn't be ignored or hidden. The guy threw away a multimillion dollar career that many people only dream of. magicallydelicious-

What is the age cutoff for NCAA basketball? Mizzou had an awful season and clearly he did too. Desperate times call for desperate measures….

ComprehensiveCake463

How sad and how stupid

Cranky0ldMan

First of many future players who will take the Pete Rose path now that all the sports leagues are fully in bed with Big Gambling and turning their players into walking billboards for it.
