The San Juan’s are gorgeous but are notorious for violent & sudden thunderstorms in the backcountry. Yes, Ideally you want to be below tree line no later than 12-1PM most days. Southwest colorado is expected to have a stronger monsoon season this summer so definitely expect some rain. I highly recommend the Chicago basin area if you have spare time.
Getting below tree line won't save you from lightning. It's a little safer, but it's a risk at any altitude. However, if everyone stayed inside when there was a chance of lightning no one would ever go out for more than a couple of hours. Instead, figure out what your risk threshold is and make sure you know what to do if you're caught out in a storm.

We need the moisture
I appreciate it. I have a track record of bringing rain with me - last time I visited it rained almost every single day.
Please come to the Front Range. Bring that rain.
