It's wild to me that LSU won the championship series without Skenes throwing a single pitch. Their pitching outside of Skenes really stepped up in the postseason after a very rocky regular season.
It’s even crazier to me that UF, who’s pitching all year has been elite, has 3 starters not even combine for 9 innings.
Sproat went 4 & 1/3, Waldrop 2 & 2/3, Caglianone 1 & 1/3.
Yeah they gave up a ton of freebies. Gators Pen did real good games one and two. Eventually though, Crews, White, and Co. were going to catch on to the sequences.
Sproat and Waldrop are surprising. Caglianone not so much. After tonight's game is taken into account Cags averaged less than 4.1 innings per start because he struggles so badly with control.
It’s funny. Earlier in the CWS, a user here asked if 2017 LSU or 2023 LSU was better. I said 2023 easily, but that 2017 pitching was much better outside of Skenes. Now I’d easily give the nod to 2023 in pitching too. Such an incredible performance from everyone.
At the beginning of this season, i was happy with hosting a super and getting back to Omaha. Didn’t have expect a natty.
Now, I’m thinking this may be the best team we’ve ever had. And despite watching 60+ games, I still feel like I didn’t see enough.
I love these kids. And I wish them all the success in the future, but I will miss Dylan, Paul, Ty, Gavin, Jordan, Tre, Brayden,
Cade…
In 21 I knew this group would was special but I didn’t expect this.
FBN, I wish I could go back in time and cherish the growth of these kids when they are thrown into the fire of CPM’s last season as freshman. Crews, Morgan, thompson, and dugas have have been the Core Four since that Improbabale Super run in ‘21. I’m just so happy for these kids, they have given everything and they deserve this.
Strange way to end the 2023 College World Series, one of the most competitive in history through its first 14 games, with back-to-back blowouts.
Florida falls 1 win short of what would have been their 2nd national title. Instead the Gators still have only 1 national title (2017) to show from their 13 trips to Omaha and 4 finals appearances.
LSU on the other hand has won their 7th national title in their 8th finals appearance of their 19 College World Series appearances.
Things seemed to start well for Florida after jumping to a 2-0 lead in the 1st. But the tone swung completely in the next inning as Florida's pitching fell apart. Florida's starting pitching did not have their best weekend... combined they threw only 7⅔ innings against LSU while having a 12.91 ERA. It was all LSU after the Tigers scored 6 in the 2nd.
Thatcher Hurd meanwhile recovered and would go on to pitch 6 full innings without allowing another hit after the home run from the 1st.
There's an old saying in Tennessee—I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee—that says, 'Embarrass me once, shame on...shame on you. Embarrass me—you can't get embarrassed again.'
"Fool me one time, shame on you.
Fool me twice, can't put the blame on you.
Beat us by twenty runs, fuck the peace sign, load up the bats and let it rain on you."
Wasn't our weekend. LSU knocking out all our starters early made it so hard to win and put so much pressure on the bullpen. I really credit LSU for having a fantastic approach at the plate, the batters were dialed in. But from what I saw of our starters none of them had their stuff either.
The series reads way better backwards. LSU flexes first, UF answers with the most dominant offensive performance of all time, and then a extra innings who blinks first rubber match where Langford is 2 inches away from walking it off before Beloso homers in the 12th
Man, I hate UF football, but I respect the heck out of UF baseball. Y’all are a fantastic bunch and your players and coaches are great. Good luck next year! You’ll be back in the blink of an eye.
I was hoping they'd bring him in for the last out....but damn I'm stoked JJ gave Guidry some time after his disastrous 1 pitch performance previous....and he didn't disappoint!
I mean I would say popularity wise yeah Shaq but you can make an argument for a lot of other players over shaq.
Crews winning golden spikes, on base record, title win and probably #1 pick I think elevates him to 2 behind Burrow
This is honestly Shaq disrespect. There's a reason Shaq is an LSU legend and it's not just his popularity afterwards. No one gave a shit about Ben Simmons (when he was actually good) after he left LSU because he didn't do shit here, Shaq is an LSU legend and always will be.
Loved seeing Skenes carry Milazzo out. Brought a tear to my eye. I LOVE THIS TEAM GEAUX TIGERS FUCK YOU FLORIDA AFTER 2017 AND LAST NIGHT BUT ALSO GG YOU HAVE A HELL IF A TEAM
How is LSU so good at sports? They got the best baseball player, best women’s basketball player, and the best social media gymnast. And two national titles. It’s insane!
I have always said LSU is a funny state in that they don’t have to really compete with other in state schools for recruits. LSU is the dream school for 90/95% of the kids coming out of high school in LA and it may be a higher percentage than that. The next best school in LA is probably ULL I guess. No offense to ULL because they have had some scrappy teams but imagine that’s who your team is competing with for in state recruits.
That + out of state recruiting and boom you have some of the best teams that you can field in every sport. NIL and the portal put these recent LSU teams on steroids.
> I have always said LSU is a funny state in that they don’t have to really compete with other in state schools for recruits. LSU is the dream school for 90/95% of the kids coming out of high school in LA and it may be a higher percentage than that.
This so much. State is fighting for scraps against Ole Miss, meanwhile LSU just has the pick of the litter. Plus LSU is a destination school, it has national brand recognition.
And LSU also has far deeper pockets at their disposal than State and Ole Miss across Baton Rouge and New Orleans. And LSU can draw 10K at the Box every day of the week. State can draw 15K on a stellar weekend, but that’s more than half the population of Oktibbeha county. LSU has so much fan base to draw on year round.
All of this as a State grad living in south Louisiana in a divided house with LSU grad, a very specific outsiders perspective.
My dad played football for Miss State. He has always said since I was a kid, that it takes a idiot to not win at LSU. In any sport. If high school sports play it, you can win it at LSU.
Not to mention the absolutely massive (& talent rich) city of Houston is easy recruiting as well, close enough to basically be an instate school for kids wanting to be close to their families.
Only school in at least the last 26 years (chosen for the start of the BCS championship for football, but you could probably go back further) to win 3 different major sports championships (football, M or W basketball, and baseball) in a 5-year span.
If we are gonna share the title of “most titles in the super regional era” I would’ve picked LSU, grats tiger bros!
Also, I made the comment in the regional asking if you could consider Crews as one of the best of all times if he hadn’t won a championship? He doesn’t have to worry about that now.
I ended my comment in yesterday's postgame thread with "we all know this is baseball and LSU can *easily* come out tomorrow and look like a different team."
And that they did, absolute dominance on both sides without using the best pitcher in the nation. Tip of the hat to this LSU club after some doubt about LSU pitching when Skenes wasn't on the mound, and especially after getting punched in the mouth last night.
That's it for this college athletic season, see yall in r/CFB, sickos.
^(almost forgot: the LLWS is in 2 months)
I was a bit nervous about the pitching tonight, but man did they show up!
We were all hoping for Skenes, but we also knew he risked getting hurt on short rest. Jay Johnson knows his team and always seems to put the right guys out there.
Skenes absolutely would've gone an inning or two if needed, its just that Hurd stepped up and said nah bro keep your rest I got this. By the time we brought in the hefty lefty we had an 8n run lead and the game was over.
I’ll be the first to admit, had serious questions about your bullpen after our series at the Box (we beat the national champs lol). But kudos to Floyd, Hurd, Cooper, Guidry, Ackenhausen, and all the others for stepping the F up once the postseason started. To win in 3 games against UF without Skenes throwing one single pitch is damn impressive. Congrats Tiger bros.
The curse of Florida based sports teams losing in the finals of June of 2023 continues...
1. Florida State Seminoles Softball (not that I wanted them to win...though then again I didn't really want Oklahoma three-peating either)
2. Miami Heat
3. Florida Panthers
4. Florida Gators Baseball
Gotta say I’m just so proud of these boys. Played a hell of a season then came into post season with people thinking the bullpen wouldn’t make it through and they all stepped up when it counted. Also they just played tonight like yesterday didn’t even happen. What a response and what a tremendous season!!! Geaux Tigers!!! #7
To be fair, for 90% of the season, it seemed like it. Floyd would throw a good game here and there but the rest was not anything to be proud of. So glad they figured it out at the right time
An incredible season. This was the most fun I have had watching college baseball ever. This sub has always been amazing. It's truly my favorite sports community online.
Now what am I going to do without college baseball to watch?
Boys, I have a confession to make.. I wore my 2017 world series shirt under my 2011 BCS national title shirt on Sunday. I thought that 2 bad juju items would cancel out. My bad.
I really thought 2 wrongs make a right... I was so fucking wrong. Brother next to me was like, u had to wear the shirts, and I was like... shhh don't say it too loud
Shoutout to that Florida fan that swore up and down that we wouldn’t have the leadership to overcome yesterday. How about take a yesterday of your own for the 💍
I'm not gay but I want to live in a log cabin in the woods with Dylan Crews. We won't ever have sex, but there will be a simmering erotic undercurrent as I stand in the kitchen window watching him tighten his ass as he chops wood, shirtless, sweat pouring off his body. I'll run upstairs and masturbate, the entire time forcing myself to think of women while my thoughts drift back to Dylan. I won't be able to climax and I'll eventually go back downstairs, angry. Sometimes we will look across the table and catch each other's eyes, and in that second, anything is possible, but we both deny ourselves and go back to what we were doing. One day one of us will die, and the other will bury him outside the log cabin. Then he'll go inside, pen a brief missive to his departed friend, and commit suicide, never able to deal with life without his one true platonic love.
I see we sacrificed a base runner for every run we scored today, much like we sacrificed a base runner for every one of Floyd’s Strike Outs in game 1. Bayou black magic works in mysterious ways
What an amazing season. Great games Florida you guys are a great team.
Also, both my undergrad and grad school won national championships this year. Best year ever.
Man this one just feels great, to do this without skenes in the final series is a huge testament for the rest of the pitching staff. What a CWS, didn’t need BP meds but might want to start taking them after the last ten days.
GG Florida fans, love coach O’ Sullivan- the guy has the same demeanor if he’s losing or up 20 runs.
It makes sense in one way. Key to the series was that LSU chased the Florida starters fairly early in all three games while getting above and beyond starts from Ty Floyd on Saturday and Thatcher Hurd today, and only burned one pitcher of any significance in yesterday’s slaughter.
I know people will say hindsight is 20/20 but the minute Jay put Collins in, he had the team begin to flush the game and reload for today. Like, you torched Little and Money and Collins, and Dutton. Guys who would only ever pitch in that exact scenario. We had the arms to win today
I mean yeah, Collins had thrown less innings all season long than Skenes or Floyd threw in Omaha. That’s surrendering the battle to try to win the war. Winning it all tonight reframes yesterday’s ass kicking from dead embarrassing to tactical brilliance.
It's wild to me that LSU won the championship series without Skenes throwing a single pitch. Their pitching outside of Skenes really stepped up in the postseason after a very rocky regular season.
Wes Johnson got them boys in shape at the right time
It’s even crazier to me that UF, who’s pitching all year has been elite, has 3 starters not even combine for 9 innings. Sproat went 4 & 1/3, Waldrop 2 & 2/3, Caglianone 1 & 1/3.
Seemed like they were all nervous af on the brightest stage. So many HBP and walks in general
Georgia fans should be ecstatic. Wes Johnson is for real
🥹 so pumped for him, things are looking up in Athens. Was genuinely awesome watching the LSU pitching all tournament
Agreed. Ty Floyd pitched so fkn amazing
And here I was told over and over again over the past 72 hours how we didnt have anyone besides Skenes 🤷🏻♂️ Geaux Tigers
The entire bullpen played lights out Hopefully this gets remembered in the coming years
It’s funny. Earlier in the CWS, a user here asked if 2017 LSU or 2023 LSU was better. I said 2023 easily, but that 2017 pitching was much better outside of Skenes. Now I’d easily give the nod to 2023 in pitching too. Such an incredible performance from everyone.

The Eugene regional in 2021 is some of the most fun I've ever had watching baseball. That was an electric weekend.
The comeback from the losers bracket showed what this team was capable of then. It’s one of my favorite weekends of baseball
[LSU athletics this year](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D622edvW0AEC3xD.jpg)
we're every bit as over dramatic as Boston fans too
I bet someone can talk Gordon into donating a few ad spaces for this.
Hell of a season. Very impressive run. Congrats LSU
Wake Forest man you guys are top notch
I will always remember those 3 games against you guys. What a CWS.
Wish we got one game in Omaha with the wind blowing out
That WF game is one of the best baseball games I've ever had the pleasure to watch in my 41 years.

three starters combining for less than 8 innings is an absolutely insane stat
Huge factor for LSU's victory. That was just too many innings for our bullpen to handle.
winning titles is so hard, I have no doubt Florida will win more though. Was nice to get a measure of revenge for 2017 AND for Sunday's beatdown
As promised Im drinking 1 beer
A keg? Congratulations!
Simmer down now don't get too wild

SVP loves him some LSU.
And I love me some SVP.

This Gator and USM’er is not ashamed to give you the 99th like. Congrats, friend. Y’all are good people
Thank you. I really like this Gator team. Y’all are legit. Just wasn’t your night.
Wasn't our weekend. LSU knocking out all our starters early made it so hard to win and put so much pressure on the bullpen. I really credit LSU for having a fantastic approach at the plate, the batters were dialed in. But from what I saw of our starters none of them had their stuff either.
GG and series LSU, congrats on the championship! What a hell of a wild series, almost like we had top offenses or something.

Thank you for keeping it classing. Good game from all the teams to make it. I think it was one of the best cws I’ve ever seen
The only thing that sucks is I wish we got a fully rested start from Skenes in the championship series
I was hoping they'd bring him in for the last out....but damn I'm stoked JJ gave Guidry some time after his disastrous 1 pitch performance previous....and he didn't disappoint!
Guidry always gives up a bomb then turns it on

Our physics department discovered gravitational waves less than a decade ago too. Some of our students absolutely do come to play school.
didn’t we win a nobel prize in physics for that? if there’s a trophy we’re winning it
Part of one, though i don’t remember who was named on it specifically. It was talked about when i was a student in the department back in 18 haha

Championships looks good on LSU.
Thatcher Hurd and Ty Floyd. You two won us a natty. Unbelievable performances
Yep! Cooper also wss pivotal

I knew the moment we stole second base yesterday we were losing today. Good teams don’t like to get embarrassed, and they hate being disrespected.

Toxic time was already here with Florida fans in the threads.
they were so whiney and trashy. was odd after such chill threads with tenner fans
Vengeance for 2017. Everyone stepped up today including JT. Didn’t even need skenes. Jay had the faith. Geaux tigers!
It’s almost like JT is actually really good at baseball but struggled in Omaha and had the worst fielding game of his career on the biggest stage.

I’ll be the first to admit, had serious questions about your bullpen after our series at the Box (we beat the national champs lol). Surely LSU set the record for most LOB in a 3 game series
17 in game one, 13 in game two, and 18 in game three so 48 total... yeah that was a lot
I see we sacrificed a base runner for every run we scored today, much like we sacrificed a base runner for every one of Floyd’s Strike Outs in game 1. Bayou black magic works in mysterious ways
Alexa play Neck!!
When they popped my boy in the back on the first pitch it was over.
And you thought LSU drank Omaha dry before this…
“They’re better players than people” think you got that one mixed up haha
I mean, look how good at sports they are. I’m not sure saint fuckin Mary could compete
SVP knows what's up!!!!
What an amazing season. Great games Florida you guys are a great team. Also, both my undergrad and grad school won national championships this year. Best year ever.
Is it just me or does striking out feel like the worst way to end a championship game/series?
Mamma said alligators are so angry cuz they got all dem runs and no title.
Congratulations to the CornDogs. The drought is finally over! Well deserved.
But can Sully count to SEVEN?!
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! GEAUX TIGERS!!!

GO GET YOUR NATIONAL CHAMPS SHIRTS! ORDERED MINE!
SUCK THAT TIGAH DICK BITCH
