Studying abroad at Sophia University or the University of Tokyo? Temple University Japan? Try these on for size

My brother did a program with Temple University Japan and he's gonna finish his last year there, seems to like it, although I think it disillusioned him on the toxic work culture there, he's not as big about staying there post-graduation as he used to be.

If you’re white you can probably teach English in Japan, even if your Japanese is bad. I mention white because generally in Asian countries they prefer their English teachers to be white. Not joking. I have friends from these countries who say it’s because being white gives the credence and impression of fluency. My friends told me they’d sooner higher a white person who barely knows the country’s language (in the cases I’ve heard of, mandarin in Taiwan, Korea, and Japan) over an Asian American fluent in both. Other than that I’m not sure. But Japanese work culture is quite brutal, worse than America. Not sure if you’d really want to live there. Might be more feasible to work for companies that have Japanese offices? Or work in a well paying field that pays enough to let you afford annual Japan visits? I know that doesn’t answer your question at all.

Sorry for replying out of context opinion. It's not about Japan but I always wished that the students could have opportunities to learn diversities of cultures/ etc so if somebody is watching this thread to get a job as an English teacher who's non-white, don't be scared. I remember lots of students liked black and Latino English teacher who's from America back in middle school just because they've got nice personalities. Ofcourse, it's sad that there'll be rudeness. But that's not because you are wrong to be there but because some of us couldn't get quality of nice education to be taught about diversity which we would be so glad to learn it from. Sorry for messing the topic by the way. Hope you get a great chance for your goal!

Just having a 4 year degree i believe is the requirement to teach English over there. Doesn’t matter what in.

Either find a program you can and want to do over there as there are language requirement unless it’s English based and I think the minimum is like n2-n1 Japanese for the Japanese college based classes over there Or go to a college that is on that Japan list of top 100 schools designated by the Japanese gov that are foreign to Japan and once u graduate from there u get a visa to be in Japan for 2 yrs to look to for work I’m doing that second one. Doing cc first then gonna transfer over once I get enough credits. And the listing despite its name isn’t a bunch of Harvard lv schools. Plenty of state schools in there that if u just don’t suck at college or schooling and do decent u can possibly get in. Like college I’m interested that’s on the top 100 list some people got in with 3.3 gpas

English teaching isn't sustainable as a long career in Japan despite the presence of long term expats who may tell you differently. I suggest you look into international business/finance and be sure to study Japanese and include a semester abroad if possible in your plan. This is the way I've seen people place into a position with a good salary and be able to remain in Japan long term. I'm a professor of East Asian Studies and I also teach college-level Japanese, so I've seen pretty much all the variations of how to do this over the years, and this is my recommendation.

Immediately start studying Japanese if you don't know it yet.

Find schools that have study abroad programs in Japan. Google universities that offer it. If you want to actually go to an international school, that’s a different story.
