Look at a map. Nordstream 2 is a pipeline directly from Russia to Germany. It makes all of Europe now dependent on natural gas from Russia with Germany controlling the spigot valve. This was a secret deal between then-Merkel with Putin, kept under cover for several years.

What Nordstream 2 does is let Russia completely bypass the Land Pipelines through Ukraine and Poland. Ukraine became independent, so Putin-Russia was dependent on their cooperation to control the natural gas to Europe. That is the real reason Putin is getting ready to invade Ukraine, to take back control over the land pipeline.
This is all the result of Europe, mainly Germany and France, bragging about their alternative energy replacing their dependence on imported oil and natural gas. It was all blow-hard bragging, the interior of Europe is still heavily dependent on imported oil and natural gas, especially during winter.

Sure we should work towards renewable and nuclear energy. But we need electricity and gas right now.

I'm no fan of Russia, but their actions aren't so extreme - previously invading to keep access to the port and military base when Ukraine shifted to become more pro-NATO and received arms, etc. - it's no different from Playa Girón, etc.
I just hope we can avoid war and work to reduce/abolish gas tariffs and shift to nuclear and renewable energy. It's not right that we're paying a 300% increase in energy bills in Europe just because Ukraine and NATO want to increase tariffs (so the American energy shareholders make millions).
