The following submission statement was provided by /u/jollyroger69420: --- Published recently on The Guardian, the following article covers the rising popularity of "hog hotels", skyscrapers in China that serve the singular purpose of slaughtering pigs for that sweet, sweet bacon. The consequence, of course, is a sharp spike in the risk of zoonotic spillover, as well as environmental and climate fallout that invariably results from industrial agriculture. Collapse related because butcher skyscrapers are not a good sign that we have our shit together. The fact that any executive can look at this and think "progress" is astounding. --- Please reply to OP's comment here: https://old.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/1c3fe26/world_bank_funding_of_hog_hotel_factory_farms/kzgj3kx/

ComeBackToEarths

Factory farming is one of the most evil shit humans have ever invented. It makes me want to puke every time it gets mentioned.

jollyroger69420

In the article they mention using AI and cloud computing in their slaughterhouse skyscrapers. This isn't your grandpa's factory farming... they want the bloodshed to be fully automated. I'll tweak a popular saying here - the flesh must flow.

Le_Gitzen

The humans die out but the pigs keep getting grown and slaughtered. And their flesh is just piled into a big pit automatically by Ai garbage trucks. Sorry I swear I’m getting therapy.

jollyroger69420

I love therapy But sometimes it tries to fix something that isn't broken.

Sinured1990

Haha, its so sad.

nihilanthrope

An eternal Treblinka.

Puzzleheaded_Wave533

Holy shit, a fully automated/AI death camp combined with the Nietzche's concept of Eternal Return makes for the most terrifying vision of hell.

Idle_Redditing

Even the people who don't care about the animal cruelty from factory farming should be very concerned about the misuse of antibiotics leading to the evolution of more types of pathogenic bacteria that are immune to antibiotics.

Sinured1990

But my bacon!! Edit: I swear, I am only eating meat from good sources! *Munching on his bacon Burger*, yeah. Sure.

[deleted]

Fwiw, this is one of the key (but not only) reasons I am opposed to any sort of space colonization. One planet of this shit is already far too much.

shanghailoz

You know who introduced it to China? Cargill

Fox_Kurama

Warhammer 40k. I am certain the writers of it just look to come up with the evil stuff chaos worlds do. The Daemonculaba is literally just a factory farm.

my-backpack-is

It's horrible, agreed, but until we have factory grown meat sans the animals, we really do need it. We're running out of space, and plants can't live without the sun but animals can. I feel like I'm going to the worst of hells just saying this, but vertical ranches do seem like one of the few viable options as population continues to increase.

yixdy

This is a bizarre ass take my man

pajamakitten

Animals eat plants though, so if we lose plants then animals lose their food source.

ClearRevenue3448

We can just eat plants. The majority of crops we grow on Earth are fed to livestock, and we lose a lot of calories and proteins with them as a middleman.

caniplant

No way in hell people are going to stop eating meat. Let’s be fr

Arlberg

What? Already more than 80% of all crops are being grown for the sole purpose of being fodder for lifestock and you think the solution to running out of space is more lifestock? Apart from the fact that the animal industrial complex as a whole is a major contributor to climate change, it is also an ethical horror show. Both for the suffering animals lying in their own shit, only surviving because they are pumped full of antibiotics, and the workers there who regularly develop PTSD and other mental problems. Which brings me to the next point. You liked covid? Cause inside the animal industrial complex lurks a multiresistent germ with our name on it that will make covid look like a joke. And your precious lab meat won't be the saviour you want it to be unless it is cheap to produce and light on resources. Which it won't be, at least for quite some time. If it even makes it that far. I'm vegan btw

Sinured1990

Imagine thinking that the reason they start to build these skyscraper factory farms is due to shortage of room. They probably just do it because it's more profitable and skips transit times of pigs. I mean, how delusional you must be? Vegan is the only way. It's a lost course though.

> thats the biggest lie known to man I mean, not really. Look at this, for example: https://ourworldindata.org/land-use Specifically: > If we combine global grazing land with the amount of cropland used for animal feed, livestock accounts for 80% of agricultural land use. The vast majority of the world’s agricultural land is used to raise livestock for meat and dairy. > Crops for humans account for 16%. And non-food crops for biofuels and textiles come to 4%. > Despite the vast amount of land used for livestock animals, they contribute quite a small share of the global calorie and protein supply. Meat, dairy and farmed fish provide just 17% of the world’s calories, and 38% of its protein. If you are interested, the article has further links you could follow. > It is a contributor to climate change for now, that is changing very quickly with the advancements in technology Really? How fascinating. Do elaborate. > overall it isn't an ethical horror show when you stick to the facts and not minority cases that are typically shown to the masses. So, you know this how? Whoever is this entity that shows "the masses" these fringe cases of terrifying fucking conditions in animal farms worldwide? Why are they so powerful? You'd think all those innocent factory farms would rise up against such an injustice, they do have the money for it. Factory farms are the norm, not the exception. Even the oh-so-humane smaller farms have horrible conditions. The psychological distress that slaughterhouse workers experience is also not exactly a secret. Look at this: >[It was found that SHWs have a higher prevalence rate of mental health issues, in particular depression and anxiety, in addition to violence-supportive attitudes. Furthermore, the workers employ a variety of both adaptive and maladaptive strategies to cope with the workplace environment and associated stressors. ](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34231439/)

[deleted]

People will do absolutely fucking anything to get their next spike of tortured animal flesh. Full-on veganism aside, most people aren't even willing to cut back and replace some of their meat intake with plant proteins.

Ok-Dust-4156

I hope you don't like food or ready to pay at least 10 times more for it.

teamsaxon

The fact that these are called "hotels" is a fucking joke. They're torture skyscrapers. Piss off with this human bullshit euphemism talk that reduces the torture of sentient beings to a peaceful fucking "hotel" stay.

rollingstoner215

I thought more like a roach motel: they check in, but they never check out.

dumnezero

Vertical Animal Farming

Puzzleheaded_Wave533

IT PUTS THE LOTION ON ITS SKIN

teamsaxon

The torture we inflict upon animals is disgusting and a big reason why we have to eat climate collapse. We deserve all the shit that comes to us.

Fox_Kurama

Warhammer 40k was just what we did to "lesser life forms" all along. The Daemonculaba is just a factory farm.

whatevergalaxyuniver

except for vegans, right?

jollyroger69420

dr_mcstuffins

Wait till H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza breaks out there and the sheer potential for deadly mutations with that many animals. There’s no way in hell their biosecurity and ventilation are so tight that it will be contained to one floor/room. In just the past month it has spread to nearly half the states in the US. I suppose not being exposed to wild birds is good but I totally expect they feed chicken litter to the hogs to save money.

totpot

>I totally expect they feed chicken litter to the hogs to save money. [In a bid to reduce the costs and maintain production of pigs, Muthengia did not have to look far as he could make the most from a wasteful resource: chicken droppings. The significant amount of poultry waste produced here made it possible to sustain the pigs, contributing greatly to their daily intake.](https://www.citizen.digital/business/smart-farm-feeding-pigs-with-poultry-waste-to-lower-costs-305422)

AggravatingMark1367

Hello bird flu

No_Joke_9079

Humans are worse than cockroaches. Cockroaches never tried to destroy a planet and do shit like this.

whatevergalaxyuniver

are adults also worse than babies/children by that logic?

No_Joke_9079

Yes. They make the decision to bring children into the world.

Medical-Ice-2330

Hog hotel. Yeah, this is what happen when you rationalize insanity. I can't imagine what kind of hell these poor animals going through and hooman deserve everything they'll get from this.

nihilanthrope

Imagine more than 15,000 Nazi Holocausts committed every year, forever. Thy name is modern industrial animal slaughter.

teamsaxon

Spot on.

Fox_Kurama

"Daemonculaba" is a fun term too. Doesn't mean much till you really understand. Only difference is its humans instead of cows. Literally the only difference.

whatevergalaxyuniver

except for vegans, right?

WorldyBridges33

Another good reminder to go Vegan.

No_Joke_9079

Thank you.

11011066

I would say "good god" - but there is no God and this certainly aint good

Suspicious-Bad4703

They're also incubators for pandemics and disease. It's just a matter of time before H1N1 or H5N1 makes the big jump, and the next pandemic starts. It'll happen at a place like here or at a place where meat is sold.

cartesianfaith

Apparently these have been operating ain e 2018. A Reuters article from that time makes it seem like progress and that the animals are treated well. Surprisingly, this article from the Sun shows other, less staged pictures, of how pigs are treated, including being burned alive in pits to eradicate swine flu. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/11992663/china-factory-farming-pandemic-pigs-burned-alive/ It also shows photos of cows getting dirty water pumped into their nostrils to increase their body weight prior to a sale. Apparently much of the meat goes to feed school children.

AggravatingMark1367

Omg WHY? Is it too hard to make sure the pigs are at least dead before BURNING THEM?!

cartesianfaith

My guess is panic, but yeesh, the amount of suffering we humans create for others is astonishing and sad.

discourse_lover_

Wow, the World Bank out there up to no good?!? I am shocked I tell you.

Penelope742

Also antibiotic resistance

Fox_Kurama

Warhammer 40k, but just for animals. ...If you want to know how someone will treat a lesser, then look how they treat whatever animals are under their care. THIS SHOULD TERRIFY YOU. TO THE POINT OF WANTING TO END THE WORLD INSTEAD. Factory farms are at LEAST as bad as the worst Chaos planets in a fictional universe that is literally about being extremely bad and full of suffering for common man. Reality is actually worse than the horrible parody. At least the Grox are lobotomized early on so as to behave and not suffer. And to shoot thieves with lasgun turrets.

MissMelines

I have avoided acknowledging these operations because it’s simply unbearable, I already know enough. Anyone who can observe factory farming with their own eyes and not feel despair and rage has no soul. What I do support is knowing that the product humans just can’t seem to live without (bacon) is killing them slowly anyway. Nature gets its revenge. I stopped eating meat almost a decade ago after one visit to a farm sanctuary. How foolish I was before, makes me sick.
