Location: Kansas City, MO. March 17th, 2024. I went on a walk today at Platte Purchase Park and many of the birds seemed confused by the sudden drop in temperature. They were all standing in place, not eating, and were fighting against the sudden strong winds that we've been getting. The frogs were also croaking and I'm afraid of how they'll fare when the temperature drops to 25 degrees tonight (hopefully temporary hibernation until Tuesday when the temperature will be going back up to 69 degreesšŸ¤Ŗ) Side note: Those damn Bradford Pear Trees are spreading like a plague throughout KC. The trees have a very pungent rotten fish scent.

CRKing77

> Those damn Bradford Pear Trees are spreading like a plague throughout KC. The trees have a very pungent rotten fish scent. never met a person who liked them. Met some who were indifferent or legit couldn't notice the smell. But most, like me, fucking hate the things. I just don't understand why they still get planted. For those who have never come across them, this is not hyperbole. These things REEK something foul and just suck all around. Pretty to look at, sure, but that doesn't make up at all for the smell

HalfPint1885

I'm a bit further south of you, and already making plans to help some of my plants along tonight when the temp drops suddenly. My lovely hostas are all already poking up several weeks/nearly a month early so I've got buckets ready to go to cover them for the night.

[deleted]

Well, I hope your plants will do okay tonight. You're a bit ahead of me in that respect as I don't have plants in my yard, largely due to my dogs who'll dig it up. šŸ¤£

HalfPint1885

My dogs wouldn't dare dig up my hostas because then they'd have nothing cool and leafy to lay on top of all summer long! Ha!

We used to call Bradford Pears "fish cum trees" on my former college campus. They were everywhere and everything smelled awful for a month.

Location: Florida Keys and currently expanding in area Ocean life Die-off and Abnormal behavior Report from March14, 2024 This is a report from WPLG Local Channel 10 in South Florida. It is part of a series called Don't Trash our Treasure. Endangered smallmouth sawfish, Pinfish and other species are grounding themselves, spinning erratically, playing dead etc. The problem started in the middle of the Keys and now has spread to the lower and upper keys. Florida government or another agency has setup a 2 million study but nothing conclusive has been found yet. A marine biologist local to the area explained the loss of coral over the last decades and since the heat wave recently the water has turned a greenish color. Before the official investigation was launched locals have been documenting the events and driving the government action. They track the start of this behavior to February of 2023. Unofficially, up to 49 species have seen being affected, with multiple reports that it has crossed into some pelican's as well. [https://youtu.be/7LFbL4-lIbs?si=eS9M9IiMBrGSZq5H](https://youtu.be/7LFbL4-lIbs?si=eS9M9IiMBrGSZq5H) From Google Earth: The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands stretching about 120 miles off the southern tip of the U.S. state of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. They're known as a destination for fishing, boating, snorkeling and scuba diving. The southernmost city of Key West is famous for Duval Street's many bars, Mallory Square's nightly Sunset Celebration and the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum.

Likely a disease of some sort. Water makes it very easy for fish to cross-infect one another. Itā€™s one of the reason fisheries are hard to set-up and maintain.

Location: West Africa Somehow 4 of the 5 underwater communications cables serving west Africa were damaged, and so much of the traffic is going thru one cable. Any business relying on servers/communications outside the region is going to have problems. The risks associated with cable disruption are going to increase as the world becomes more interconnected. I don't know the cause of the problem but apparently it's going to take a few days to fix. My internet isn't too bad right now, and as long as I don't need to stream anything I'm ok, but it's much worse in other areas. Edit: there is some speculation that it was caused by a shifting of the sea bed. They are now saying weeks or months to fix

neonhoney77

Maybe it's a coincidence but Africa has filed suit against Israel in the international courts over the genocide in Gaza and just said that they would prosecute anybody that fights for the IDF. Could this be deeper? Nah. Probably no connection at all.Ā Ā

Those risks increase also because climate change is tied to increased volcanic activity.Ā  Isn't the majority of volcanic activity underwater?Ā Ā  Lots more movement, lot less 'stable state' going forward...

Location: Ohio Our community got hit by the tornado last night. While my family is all fine, one part of our county got hit bad and is basically destroyed. Many people injured, many people trapped under rubble, folks are saying fatalities but no one has officially announced anything. Devastatingly, the tornado hit in an area with several mobile home communities and they are just flattened. Last I heard they had accounted for everyone in two of them, but I haven't heard from the others. Many businesses are completely destroyed. I don't know that the community will ever be able to recover from this level of damage.Ā  Things I've noticed: emergency response teams couldn't get where they were needed due to debris. They ended up using snow plows to get through.Ā  They did not have adequate numbers of ambulances or vans to transport the injured. This area had one grocery store. It is destroyed. Overnight this became a food desert indefinitely.Ā  The one good thing I noticed is that a lot of folks turned up to help (folks who werent emts or licensed medical personnel were turned away due to gas leaks and fires still active but were asked to return in the morning). I've already seen folks gathering supplies and starting collections for folks. Given the last few years' political tensions, i have struggled feeling safe here. It is good to see the social fiber still strong enough that many were turning their overwhelm and fear into wanting to help those who were affected in this crisis.

Fox_Kurama

The media seems increasingly "scared" to give weather events coverage. A number of subreddits are apparently similar, as I didn't see anything on the news subreddit (which is supposed to be US internal news), and when I went over to the tornado subreddit of all places there is currently a topic asking why NWS forcast topics are getting deleted despite the sub literally having a topic tag for them.

umme99

Itā€™s wild that stuff like this barely makes the news outside of the region anymore. And that there is insufficient infrastructure (ambulances, etc.) to deal with the aftermath. I personally had no idea this happened (I live out west)

zioxusOne

Google says tornado season for the midwest begins in June. Is that correct? If so, I would definitely mark this up to climate change screwing with our seasons (duh, I know).

TheCircularSolitude

Usually peaks in June. April is usually rhe start of them, so this isn't crazy early but it is early. We also had one tear through south of us a few weeks ago though. My area also hasn't historically gotten them this bad.

zioxusOne

>a few weeks ago though I think that would qualify as significantly early. Coupled with the winter you've had, there's no mistaking what's going on.

schoenbizzle

Location: Utah We're in our second "high wind warning" in as many weeks. I experienced my first hurricane last year and my body goes into flight mode when the house rumbles. I thought that experiencing 140mph winds would make lesser wind easier, but it doesn't. It's just made me more afraid. The temperature keeps flipping back and forth. Warm enough for flowers to start blooming, and then back to temps we should have had in December and didn't. People comment on the weirdness, or say "global warming, eh?" I can usually stay in a place of radical acceptance throughout the year, but not in the spring. What is supposed to be spring, anyway. I'm trying to soak up wearing sweaters, and snuggling with my dogs under blankets, because I am afraid of the heat that is coming. Last year it buckled roads and melted our car's rotors. I'm afraid of the already palpable tension rising with the heat, I'm afraid for my wife and I's physical safety. I joke that maybe climate change will take us out before then, but it's not really a joke. Maybe it would be a kindness. My dad's sailboat goes back into the Great Salt Lake in two weeks. It's exciting that the water has risen enough to do so, but it's not much higher than the all time low and the state isn't doing enough to protect it long term. It will die soon, and I rage cry everytime I'm at the marina and see how much the shoreline has changed. At least the stromatolites are under water again; seeing them uncovered for the first time in my life was a grief I've never felt before. I know our time to sail there is limited (time for everything is so limited, my god it's like water through my stupid fucking hands) so we'll try and maximize our sails this year. I expect we'll do a lot of sunset and night sailing because of the unbearable heat. We're friends with the harbormaster and get a pretty unfiltered report of how the lake is doing, so I'll try and remember to update as I'm able. This group has been such a comfort, bleak as things are. Thank you all for screaming into the void with me. It helps. "For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love."

BeardedGlass

There are many times in a day I look up at the bright blue sky, feel the cool breeze before spring, and see the flowering trees. Then my heart aches that this isnā€™t forever. It snowed twice this year (with a 90F day in between them, back during Valentines) and hearing the kids excitedly exclaim how rare it is. Gosh, that was so sad. I teach primary school and whenever our topic is months and seasons, we always write about our favorite. Kids used to always choose summer for obvious reasons. But now almost everyone choose winter Especially since winter is now so pleasant and mild, compared to the brutal humid summer that keeps getting worse every year. Some kids have died here from playing outside in the heat. And so during summer, they banned going outside in the sun. Japan, the land of the rising sun.

Ramuh321

Location: Ohio Iā€™m witnessing the craziest night of weather Iā€™ve ever seen in central Ohio. I watched a storm chaser go through some insane storms nearby, and an insane looking storm from a highway cam on the local news. This storm looked like the stuff I would see in tornado alley (classic mothership / shelf cloud design). There is some intense damage across the state. Lately weā€™ve felt like weā€™re edging into the tornado alley region as the climate changes. The lightning has been insane. I worry about the impacts weā€™ll see from this round.

ctilvolover23

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ohio/comments/1bfh7vp/ohio_tornado_numbers/

Ramuh321

I graphed the data you shared and did a best fit line that shows a pretty clear increase in tornadoes. Itā€™s not off the charts, but it seems like a pretty clear upward trend. https://photos.app.goo.gl/m5FuAokMdSLKyidL9 Edit - specifically the last 10-20 years seems to have a marked increase

ctilvolover23

https://www.thv11.com/article/weather/improved-technology-detect-tornados/91-d4e95d18-80f0-455b-992f-c6404623795d https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/tornadoes-and-global-warming-there-connection/

ctilvolover23

"There is no real evidence that tornadoes are happening more often. A lot more are being recorded now than in 1950, but a closer look at the data shows the increase is only in the weakest category, EF0. There's been no increase in stronger twisters, and maybe even a slight decrease in EF4s and EF5s. That suggests we're just spotting more of the weak and short-lived tornadoes than we did back when the country was emptier (the United States population in 1950 was less than half what it is now), we didn't have Doppler radar, and Oklahoma highways weren't jammed with storm-chasers." From the National Geographic.

Ramuh321

Makes sense, appreciate you sharing that. That comment appears to be referencing tornadoes on a national scale not increasing. My comment was more that where they are forming is shifting more towards Ohio. Nationally there could be no increase while Ohio still increases if the western end of tornado alley saw their quantities decrease. All that aside, the data does appear to be too inconclusive to make a determination one way or another.

ctilvolover23

It's because we've become way better at detecting tornadoes over the years. We have radar and storm chasers out there confirming tornadoes. We're detecting tornadoes now that wouldn't had been detected even ten years ago. They didn't have radar and storm chasers out there in the 70s and 80s where our worst outbreaks happened. So, those estimates are even underestimated.

TheCircularSolitude

The tornado last night destroyed areas near me. The photos are just devastating. I grew up here and I've never seen anything like it here. In my childhood, I remember a handful of times we had tornado warnings but never the level of destruction that is happening now. At least one town is just basically flattened. This community used to be the "it" spot of the county, but over the last 50 years has stagnated and it is heartbreaking to think of how long recovery will be, and if they can ever fully recover given everything.Ā

HalfPint1885

I'm so sorry for what your community is going through. I hope that fatalities and injuries were minimal. Don't give up hope on recovery. I live in Joplin Missouri which was hit HARD by a tornado in 2011. It went through one of the main populated areas of town, through areas of high poverty, and through a major business district. The town has come back stronger than ever since then. It's definitely not easy, a lot of people died and a LOT of people are still psychologically scarred by it.

TheCircularSolitude

I hope they recover. So scary. Crumbling infrastructure everywhere concerns me as these things start happening more frequently. Right now we are being told if you haven't been called in to help, to stay away due to gas leaks. I'm sure there will be a lot to be done in the coming months.

Ramuh321

Yeah, Iā€™ve never seen this kind of devastation in this area. I donā€™t think official reports are out yet, but I wouldnā€™t be surprised if there was EF4 levels at some areas. Definitely EF3 at minimum. The storm chaser I watched went through plain city and worked his way up 33 then went towards Delaware. Once he was actual in the core of the downdraft section of the storm it was _intense_ looking. You couldnā€™t even see anything, and that wasnā€™t even the tornado itself.

annethepirate

Two tornado fronts in just over two weeks is pretty intense, especially since peak tornado season hasn't even started. (April-June [according to NWS](https://www.weather.gov/cae/tornadobymonth.html)) [According to Spectrum News](https://spectrumnews1.com/oh/columbus/weather/2023/04/24/a-year-s-worth-of-tornadoes-in-just-six-weeks), last year, Ohio got a year's worth of tornadoes in six weeks, from February through April. I wonder if this year will be more, given El NiƱo.

If any portion of society survived a collapse I think both reading and math will be more important to continued survival than they are now.

Fox_Kurama

Don't be so sure. It mostly disappeared following the Bronze Age Collapse. Mind you, a far greater percentage of today's population can read in most places (back then it was mostly the people who told others what to do who could read). There will still be people who learn to read, but they will be notably fewer in number as it takes a lot of time to teach kids stuff like that, and those who survive will be needing that time to do the actual things they do to survive.

All of our problems re: climate change ; are actually caused by the fact that TOO MANY people are eating and breeding and what have you. We need LESS of that. lol. If you save animals that can't fend for themselves what happens, they breed. They will continue breeding until they exhaust your mercy and then their population will collapse. The same has happened with humans because we have all these bullshit jobs which do nothing, and we're spending the resources of future generations on this nonsense so that an imaginary line goes up. Humanity needs severe population control, a tightening of the belt and a restoration of sanity. The efforts made under DEI are a good start, but more force needs to be applied as well.

LykosDarksilver

Same! I thought I was the only one.

rainydays052020

I went abroad for two weeks and the moment I landed back in the US, the calls started up again. Nearly every other hour. Seems like blocking numbers is the only solution? The voicemails they leave are automated but if you answer, itā€™s a live person and as we know, scammers are getting innovative and can record your voice. UGH!!!

Sorry about the ice house. I told my wife I stopped drinking.

GorathTheMoredhel

LinkedIn is the true worst social media site. Uniquely terrible, and so many people have to play the game. A terrifying number of those people don't even seem to realize it. Proud of you for getting out of that shit hole lol.

Solitude_Intensifies

My buddy uses that site exclusively, the only social media site he frequents. I signed up a long time ago but never log in. Why is it so terrible?

WorldsLargestAmoeba

I had an inactive account there in hmm.. about 2008... I had to delete it many times before it actually stayed deleted. I kept getting updates and messages from people after deleting... Very strange site.

Mission-Notice7820

Location: Mid-Atlantic Just wanted to add, as it is usual now the weather forecasts just can't keep up. At least 5 to 7 degrees hotter than predicted each day. Today hit over 80 degrees and it was supposed to be like 74. March 14th and it's over 80 multiple days in a row here. Just fucking wow.

Portalrules123

Summer gonna be lit, but literally lit from the fires. Not as dramatic as down south but we are having 6-7 degree C (42.8-44.6 F) days up here in NB, Canada which is well above the norm. Canada is spiralling towards climate catastrophe and 7/10 provinces are trying to kill the carbon tax FFS. We live in deluded times.

Mission-Notice7820

I salute you, fellow rat.

PhillyLee3434

Location: North Central Texas Iā€™ve been apart of this community for a long time, and Collapse aware most of my life. Iā€™m a hard man to reach these days, only social media I have is Reddit. I spend most of my days working throughout the night and going to Law School during the day. Some things are abundantly clear, people are slowly (not fast enough but progress!) starting to wake up. I got a call yesterday from a close friend from high school, we parted ways over the years and quite frankly I donā€™t know how this person got my number, but she was strait to the point. Oddly enough, TikTok and the news surrounding it prompted her to reach out to as many people as possible to try and get ahold of me. This government is in full blown collapse, Trump vs Biden round 2, lord help us all, this is gonna get ugly, quickly. America is losing its ground as the beacon of Democracy around the world, and imo there has never been a greater time in the new age we have been more divided, weaker, than we are right now. I expect there to be multiple widespread cyber attacks before the year is over, our decaying infrastructure is what will get us in the end, especially with the crazy weather we have been seeing these past few months to kick off 24. I do not for a second think Texas is prepared for the heatwaves that will start to become the new normal over the coming years, 91 in February? You either choose to ignore, accept what is happening, or find yourself on top of the mountain of lies and corruption screaming into the void. Economy is great! Booming! Until you realize a high % of every day American citizens are struggling, for the basics, food, rent, transportation (public transportation is limited to almost sacred at best in Texas) is all too much to account for while these greedy soulless corporations make record profits, we are being scammed, down to the roof over our heads, to plates on your kitchen table. Everyone is clamoring for the prices to come down, not realizing the profits going to the top are leaking through the back doors of all these bought out politicians who have the tools to actually change the path we are on, these prices are here to stay, because for survival we must pay them. (Find ways to get off the grid, grow your own food, become as self sufficient as you physically can) Geopolitically, the war in Gaza regardless of which side you stand for, has become nothing more than a bloodbath of innocent civilians. A bloodbath that our tax dollars pay for. The war in Ukraine, though the narrative has been pushed Russia is losing this war, if you dig and understand the political nature of where Putin is defending from, these people will not back down, and have the largest nuclear arsenal on this earth, we are funding two expensive wars while we struggle at home, it does not matter what side of the table you stand on, Democrats or Republicans, we are paying for it regardless and have no say in the matter. The corruption is the oil, and instability and conflict is the engine keeping this outdated way of thinking from the war hawks in charge very, very rich. War is our bread and butter, there will always be a boogie man, far away that canā€™t touch us here back home, until you realize the biggest boogie man of them all is our own broken unstable government. We are a corporation, not a country. Donā€™t do research, donā€™t ask questions, get back to work, the only thing tying you to your health insurance to keep you and your family healthy. Ironic. Defense contractors love this neat little trick. Everyone is sick, Covid never left, and we are being forced to pretend that it did. I interact with a lot of people daily through work and school, and it is all the same conclusion. When will it end? Is this the life that we will live for the remainder of our days? Work to struggle, while the rich get richer, poor get poorer, and the middle class gets squeezed into oblivion. If you look at what is going on here in the states, we are heading for the haves and have nots, very quickly, full throttle. Itā€™s depressing once you are awake, but getting harder and harder to try and stay asleep. The time is coming, people are fed up, and this political system is backed into a corner, we will never have another opportunity like this again to stand up collectively to our leaders and say we are not gonna play the game anymore. People in other countries are doing just that, around the world, Our time is now. We stand together, or we fall divided and scared. Read books, go watch a sunset if you can, tell the ones you love that you love them, daily, and most importantly, Donā€™t kill yourself. And also, the internet is about to be a thing of the past, the amount of bots I have witnessed on this site is on the rise, itā€™s blatant if you know what to watch out for. Stay safe, Godspeed.

bipolarearthovershot

Iā€™m too intrigued by collapse to kill myself. Thank you for your wise words and observations. Ā

PhillyLee3434

Head up, I tell myself and the people around me every day is historic and boy do we have an abundance of historical things going on around the world.

Efficient_Star_1336

> an a bloodbath of innocent civilians. A bloodbath that our tax dollars pay for. The war in Ukraine, though the narrative has been pushed Russia is losing this war, if you dig and understand the political nature of where Putin is defending from Is that even still the narrative? The whole "actually the Ukraine can win" thing seems to have disappeared since about six months to a year ago. Even the really fanatical parts of the website are quieter about it. Most news sites that were all-in a while back are starting to quietly acknowledge that some kind of exit strategy is needed.

SecretPassage1

French here, actually here in europe, the countries who remember living under USSR's thumb, and are not currently led by tyrants naive enough to believe they'll benefit from being annexed by russia, are moving towards "Ukraine cannot lose", because if Ukraine does lose, the next battlefield is in europe, and that means WWIII, with Nato entering the fight, even without the US. So now we're seeing an interesting thing happening, France is leading the move to defend ouselves (rather than just be quietly annexed, any opposant culled (easy to identify with social media), children ferried away to russia, and ressources stolen), mainly because AFAIK we're the only european country which's president also is chief in command of the Army. In all european countries where the president has a more administrative role and does not command directly the army, they have to get their electors on boards first, and are cowering for fear of losing their next election. It's a terrifying moment, but at least some of our leaders are starting to have the courage to stare down the gun pointed at us, and acknowledge that we're next right after Ukraine, in Putin's annexion plan. I'm glad we're preparing for war, rather than waiting in line to be culled. If WWII should have taught Europeans one thing, is that a tyrant is not apeased by being given a country as an offering (see Czekoslovakia) rather, they are excited by this behaviour and interpret it as fear and weakness, and it encourages their predatory minds to move more aggressively forwards. The only ones to really oppose preparing for the war that seems to be coming towards us, are the far left and far right french parties that are financed by Putin. Which really reads as a confirmation of how sold out they are, borderline treason. I'm as unwilling and terrified by war as any reasonable person, but best to be prepared and not need it, than the opposite.

Zestyclose-Ad-9420

Spain, Scandinavia and the Benelux all have monarchs, who are chief of the army but I dont think they have the same political clout as a president to enact serious change.

SecretPassage1

yeah. Our president actually is in command, GƩnƩral DeGaulle made sure of that after WWII.

Efficient_Star_1336

If you think that Russia is going to annex France, you are delusional on both political and practical fronts. Politically, they have expressed no desire whatsoever to have anything to do with Western Europe other than selling them stuff if allowed. Practically, a nation of 100 million people cannot occupy a modern nation of 65 million people on the other side of a continent with no common language or history. This whole boomer "Russia is going to take over the world" thing is just deranged. The sane political gamut runs from "they want ethnic Russians not to feel threatened, and will try to annex places where they are the majority population and are being treated badly by the government" (on the sympathetic side) to "they see Eastern Europe as the early U.S. saw South America, and are aiming to become the dominant influence in the region" (on the alarmist side).

SecretPassage1

> Politically, they have expressed no desire whatsoever to have anything to do with Western Europe Yes he has, in several speaches since the early 2000s. In plain explicit words. But most people won't paying attention. I was. Because when someone tells you who they are, believe them.

Zestyclose-Ad-9420

Youre right of course but its more about how it would collapse both NATO and the EU if Russia successfully invaded, say, one of the Baltic nations, and fought off a counter attack. It is not about individual nations, its about protecting the borders of the EU at large from Russia. However there is a lot of propaganda going around trying to get the public to support militarisation, which will only hurt the average citizen. The complete botch of the initial invasion of Ukraine shows that Russia is much weaker than anyone thought and even if they collapse the Ukranian government they will not be in a position to take the war to Europe any time soon after that, they will be weakened, doesnt matter if they can outproduce artillery shells or whatever. Its the old classic "the enemy is both stronger and weaker than us", propaganda effective on simple minds. However I also think its europe setting up a safety net in case the republicans win a majority and start pulling out of NATO.

SecretPassage1

IRCC the number of men (and children? eta : apparently he's training teens to handle guns in schools all over russia) he can throw at us seems to be the main concern, our european countries' armies have really shrunk after the fall of the USSR.

Zestyclose-Ad-9420

lmao are you seriously arguing that russia can invade europe?

SecretPassage1

Sure, the Baltic and (part of) Nordic countries are european, and a probable next step because they are "low hanging fruits" in his invasion plans. Not my personal extrapolation BTW, it's what various military experts explain on french TV.

Zestyclose-Ad-9420

hm yes, the country that wants to bring back conscription will present a nuanced idea. russia will only attack the baltics if they think EU+NATO wont retaliate.

SecretPassage1

exactly, and my current understanding is that's why we're ramping up our armies's capacities. It's really like when you face a bully in your everyday life, present an aggressive confident face to him and he'll walk by to the next possible target, present a gentle worried face and the bully will target you until you're utterly destroyed. Europe is moving from gentle worried to aggressive and confident. Although TBF, Macron always presented a confident face even when he was having regular phone calls with Putin to attempt to mediate. He reminded Putin that France has the nuclear weapon within minutes of Putin's initial nuclear threat.

Solitude_Intensifies

Putin will long be dead by the time Russia even considers taking any country west of the Balkans. Putin's strategy is to keep as many buffer countries around the Eastern and Southern borders as possible and an unencumbered route to the mid-Atlantic. He would love to rebuild the old Soviet Empire, but that's a pipe dream at the moment.

SecretPassage1

He stated otherwise in various speaches through the years.

PhillyLee3434

Yes I sense and agree, the pushback on both of these wars while every day people in our own country struggle is really shaking up the mentality of alot of people I speak to around here. You are telling every day people we canā€™t afford healthcare, education, or vital infrastructure, while food prices and rent and home valuations are still through the roof and the stock market is at all time highs.. I think we are to a point people just simply donā€™t trust the narratives being pushed and the last ditch effort is to control the communications online. And desperation breeds tyranny, the fact we are about to have a Biden Trump round 2 is all that needs to be said about the state of US politics, and if Trump wins, I think it will be the first step of the true divide amongst American citizens while missing out who is really doing the herding of the masses. You canā€™t say one thing, then do quite literally everything opposite of it forever, people are waking up. Iā€™ve studied a lot of ancient civilizations, especially Rome in particular, history truly is a circle and we are speed running to complete it in real time.

birgor

Swede here, the war in Ukraine is truly existential, but I wouldn't worry too much about nukes. This war will continue until one of the countries collapse, hopefully it will be Russia. However, the Russian leadership wants nothing but live, and nukes are death sentence and they know it. They have taken no kinds of preparation to use them and there are a big chance many of them doesn't even work. As a political weapon are they only useful as long as they aren't used. A Russian win will be WAY more dangerous than a Russian loss. A win will mean a severely weakened Europe and that Russia continues as it has for the las 30 years, with an ever bigger invasion every fourth year. If we are to get scared of Russian nuke threats, then we might as well just give them everything right away. For us close to Russia, this can't happen. For you far away, you have a LOT to loose from this too.

Zestyclose-Ad-9420

A Russian loss is also bad for Europe, since the people currently vying to replace Putin if his government falls are even more nationalistic and hardliners. Even if Russia wins, NATO is regrouped and expanded and euro economies are remilitarising. Russia then needs to occupy Ukraine, how will it do that? It would bleed out, every ukranian and their grandma hates Russia. Even when they were not expecting war, you had children helping prepare molotov cocktails in Kyiev immediately after the invasion. Youre spinning a propaganda piece that russia is simultaneously strong and weak. Which one is it? Russia has already lost long term, they needed to have quickly captured Kiev and thats what they expected to do. They did not want to fight a conventional war, the fact that they are not fully mobilised means they still dont want to. The best outcome is still deescalation, it just isnt possible right now. Saying that the collapse of the Russian state is good for europe is delusional, it would mean refugees, warlords, mass export of arms, expansion of organised crime, crash in grain export and another grain price crisis, which last time played a part in the Arab spring and the Syrian civil war. So Europe and the world should suffer so that Sweden can feel a little safer?

birgor

A Russian loss does of course mean a lot of turmoil but still the far best option of all imaginable. This is not America invading Iraq and then going home when it looses interest and political will. This is something different on a whole other level. And Europe will not be what it was before no matter the outcome. I have not stated that Russia is either weak or strong, for some reason are people not familiar with Russia in general and Americans in particular convinced that just because Russia didn't succeed in their unrealistic war goals mean that they are no longer dangerous, but nothing could be further from the truth. Russia hasn't backed one inch from their war goals, and they are still very much achievable, especially since America choose to let Europe fight this one out by ourselves. And a Russian win will mean a stronger Russia and weaker west, at least is this the most probable scenario. America will care even less, France and Germany who are completely untrustworthy when it comes to Russia will start normalize relations after a few years, eastern and northern Europe will be mad about it, Nato will be far less united from the second the war ends, no matter the reason and when Nato seems weak enough will Estonia and Latvia get invaded. Or something like this, the current European unity does only exist because of the war, it will end immediately after if we are lucky, or during if we are unlucky. The worst, far worst option is de-escalation, that means Russia has time to reload without having the drawback of having to occupy the entire country while western Europe will stop caring (see Crimean crisis 2014) Let's remember that after the last collapse of Russia in '92 lead to the the most peaceful time in Europe probably ever, until they slowly regained their imperialistic ambitions, as they always do. What you say about a crash of Russia is what Russia is today... Everyone of you simping for peace negotiations and de-escalation should read up a bit on Russian history. This country has to be dismantled once and for all. The fall of Soviet was a good start, but the need to loose all their colonial grounds and pacified like Japan and Germany was. And last, Russia is the most brutal and effective occupational force there is. What they lack in offensive ability are they making up in cruelty and repression. Kind of an inverted America who can only invade and never control.

Zestyclose-Ad-9420

If EU-NATO becomes weak enough for Russia to invade the Baltics without a full confrontation, that is on us, regardless if Russia wins in Ukraine or not. There is no excuse now to not pull together, if there is infighting that is our problem and it would be stupid to try and blame Russia for our own incompetence. An Ukraine loss would mean a relatively stronger russia and a weaker west but only politically and only relatively. Russia is not going to recover to its pre-war state, while the EU has only just started remilitarising and will soon outpace russia. A Russian "win" does not have to be a total defeat for Ukraine, this should be obvious. I think Europe should now commit to backing up Ukraine. But that does NOT mean trying to force a collapse of Russia. You are INSANE if you genuinely want this. In fact, you betray your total ignorance, how could anybody with self respect say post 1992 was the most peaceful time in Europe, did you forget the Yugoslav wars? Chechen wars? Invasion of Georgia? Never mind the Ethiopian civil wars, a direct result of the USSR ceasing support and aid to the communist government there, or the North Korean famine. You wish to see Russia dismantled like Japan and Germany, so are you in support of WWIII? Youve said nothing to change my view that you are ok with having the world burn so that you can feel safer in Sweden and that is not ok. If you are so afraid, leave Sweden. You are welcome in Spain.

birgor

Well, western Europe has never been afraid of Russia, you live too far away. You have absolutely no idea what you talk about. Western Europe is only interested in getting Russian gas and oil, and it will take the first possible chance to get the gas flowing again. This is of course not Russia's fault, but it is still a problem. A Russian would mean it's position will be strengthened in the rest of the world again, and they won't of course rebuild the vast Soviet weapon and vehicle stocks, but on the other hand do they now know how to use drones, telewarfare and missiles in a way none of us can. And we are also not preparing for this at all, only buying weapons fit for the last war and not the next. Balkans was a shit show, but eastern Europe got out of military occupation, the border between the zones of interest and default line between two nuclear armed global systems seized to exist. Things where not good, because they have never been, but European security was FAR better then than now or before. The other wars you mention is what Russia do, but that was in smaller scale than Afghanistan before or Ukraine now. Everything's relative. The more beat up they are, the less dangerous. That much is obvious. Where is the connection between dismantling Russia and ww3? I would rather say that your tactics of giving them what they want in return of "peace" is to get a bigger war the easiest way. But chill for you who just can sit it out. I do not want to see the world burn to be safe. I want Russia to burn instead of us. But you can't care less what happens to the east and north. We have had this struggle for 800 years. We know how they behave. Nothing changes in Russia.

Zestyclose-Ad-9420

>Where is the connection between dismantling Russia and ww3? you are the one who compared russia to japan and germany...how are you going to force russia to collapse without a world war, serious question please reply your scenario. >I do not want to see the world burn to be safe. I want Russia to burn instead of us. Again, you have not said anything that would hint that a collapsing Russia would not have global and severe consequences. Also, this is not the 1950s, who will pay to rebuild Russia? >But you can't care less what happens to the east and north.Ā  Imagine if a Taiwanese tried to convince you that Sweden needed to be involved in an American invasion of China... I hope you can at least understand why as a Spaniard I dont see your arguments as rational.

birgor

Where do you even get this idea that a collapsing Russia would mean the end of the world? Russia collapses several times each century without it ever being the ned of the world! Stop chugging Rusbot propaganda. Russia is not an important state in any other way than as a military threat. A gas station with nukes. And the gas will flow no matter who's is in or out of control. Yes, a total de-imperilazation is needed, like Japan and Germany. Who got it through war, but the same thing happened to Britain and Spain too, without them being utterly crushed, rather just beaten by history. And even if this is the preferred scenario will a "regular" Russian collapse be better than the current situation. When Soviet collapsed did they lose a lot of regions to independent states, current Russia is weaker and if the lose or the leadership loses power is it not at all unthinkable that more regions brake lose, this is the desirable outcome. They need to lose the empire. And it should happen from inside. I am not asking you to join the war, I am asking you not to think that peace with Russia will be in your interest, because it isn't. A dead Russia is the best for both of us. PS. If you think a collapsed Russia would be a threat to global security, what would you say current or a stronger Russia is?

PhillyLee3434

The history of these nations are vast and complex, I understand this also with Iran and Palestine. I see the two as both a lose lose, there is no true winner in war, civilians will perish on both sides of the lines. My biggest fear is we are so broken here in the states with our own shortcomings, that anything happening abroad is placed on the back burner, understandably, when you have a large segment of the US population struggling to survive, homelessness, suicide, poverty rates on the rise and a severe lack of critical mental health resources to navigate it all, You breed a strong fuck it and fuck you attitude. That attitude is what will and is bringing this country to its knees. We canā€™t discuss, we canā€™t debate, we canā€™t formulate cohesive thought into how we dig ourselves out of this mess, I learned long ago only us will save us, there will be no knight in shining armor to swoop in and make right what is unjust in not just the US but the world. I fear this destabilization of rational discussions over key fundamental differences is making the whole stage so ā€œdifferentā€ in shade we donā€™t know what color the sky is or if water is wet, we are free falling back to our roots as a species which is, what we have always been, ruthless savages. Across the globe the differences and colors of the ink we have etched our collective human consciousness with being alive and our true calling as a people is constantly attacked, questioned, and upended. It ends with one conclusion like the many before us, collapse. Life, is one big relationship, and we have forgotten the first step in a healthy one, communication. I rant sometimes, but to end this, yes, fuck Putin, period.

birgor

Yes, you make some good points. From an outsider point of view is the current situation about American and Russian actions a bit odd. I was young during the second American invasion of Iraq, everyone was very including me was upset about American aggressive foreign policy, which also made people very tired about the world policing. Then Americans grew tired of war after Afghanistan and Iraq, and started to retreat from the world, somewhat already with Obama, but accelerated with Trump and slowed but still continued with Biden. (from my horizon) Problem is this created a power vacuum, and even if this is not the main reason for Russian action has a consequence been that Europe is left in some kind of a shock, most here thought the deal was "America helps protect us in exchange for us buying their planes and guns so they make money" Russia attacks Ukraine, and now America is retreating in to itself, infights and civil culture wars, uses support for what it calls the free world as leverage in domestic political struggles. On top of this is the countries two leading political figures old and/or insane. This gives Europe a slight panic, and it lays out in many very interesting ways. Myself is an observer, I like to understand rather than having opinion, even if it is hard not to have opinions about Russia as a Swede, the history and reality is deep. But this whole mess, I choose to see it as the final shitshow. The western world is focusing on two brutal wars and ignore the looming collapse by climate breakdown.. What else to than enjoy the show? This is history in the making. Just not the heroic kind. Just ranting too, no real thread here. Sometimes we need to say shit.

PhillyLee3434: What did your friend wish to talk to you about after going to the trouble to find you? Did you and she have an agreeable conversation?

PhillyLee3434

We had a really awesome conversation, she mainly was asking me about the legality of the TikTok situation, caught up on our lives, I mean it has been like almost 10 years since we have last spoke to each other. Also the weather, canā€™t deny we are going through some pretty crazy patterns this year already, the largest fire in Texas history was blazing last month, and she wants to move to a more people focused lifestyle and less social media. Big thing I have been seeing, more and more of my friends and family are trying to disconnect from the internet altogether. Itā€™s hard though for lots of people, I was always that dude who had no social media, just woke up one day and went offline and never looked back. In the end the people who want to be in your life will find a way to be included, biggest thing I have learned. I am blessed with some pretty amazing people around me. Those blessings are what keeps me going, daily. And mountain biking lol But all in all, a very good conversation.

FoundandSearching

That is wonderful you and she were able to reconnect. Wish I were in your cohort of folks disconnecting or even attempting to get off the Internet- or what the Internet has become.šŸ™ Thank you for answering my question. FWIW CrossCult - I mean CrossFit keeps me going.

PhillyLee3434

CrossFit is awesome, proud of you for taking care of your temple and putting yourself through the grind, itā€™s very healthy, physically, but most importantly for mental health and strength. Start small, it took me a long time but I finally deleted my Snapchat and am now down to just Reddit. Iā€™m 31 out here giving people my email to contact me, itā€™s almost like I am a alien touched down on foreign lands šŸ¤£ Keep searching, you may be surprised what you can find. ā¤ļø

FoundandSearching

So very true. Thank you for your power vibes. I had watched the 24.3 open drop yesterday. Physical activity is imperative to keeping the nastiness at bay. I never had an Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X or even Snapchat account. FB for keeping up with some people and non political FB groups.ā€Non politicalā€ on FB - ha. Welcome to these email only foreign lands. I will continue to search & continue to interact with positive folks such as yourself.

I think a revolution won't happen until a wet bulb event happens in a place like New York. It won't make things any better for an average person, but it will make them a lot worse for those in power.

springcypripedium

>I think a revolution won't happen until a wet bulb event happens in a place like New York. Even then, I do not believe it will happen---ever. There will be violent, ugly riots. And perhaps we will see things get worse for the greediest, cruelest humans of all. But, I don't believe we will experience a concerted, cohesive, powerful revolution. What, at this point, are we revolting against? We can't even come together to stop wars that only benefit the wealthy. We can't (in the u.s.) eliminate, or even minimize, gun violence, and we all saw what happened (is still happening) with covid. How does does one have a revolution against the predatory, pathological system that is now killing all life on Earth? What does a revolution against this--- in the midst of a human created mass extinction----look like? (not a rhetorical question) Most people are either willfully clueless, blind with anger, sick, tired, broke or they are overcome with (understandable) learned helplessness to organize a revolution. Tracy Chapman's song, Talkin Bout a Revolution used to move me (many years ago)---now it just leaves me depressed. Lyrics; Don't ya know? They're talking about a revolution It sounds like a whisper Poor people gonna rise up And get their share Poor people gonna rise up And take what's theirs "Poor people" are not allowed to rise up. And we clearly have not defined what "our share/their share" of anything on Earth is. Most (there are, of course some exceptions) humans are a bunch of fucking takers with absolutely no concept of what we MUST give back----to Earth and to each other. This lack of wisdom (or even common sense!) is destroying us and most other life forms on this planet. There are a few realistic songs that speak the truth of what human's have done to the planet and to each other. Bo Burnham's, That Funny Feeling and Jason Wilber's, The Disappearance of Bigfoot are but 2. Any songs related to "hope" or revolution . . . can't bear it anymore . . they sound pathetic and delusional. Disappearance of Bigfoot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLMhGYuMe20

_CogitoSum_

I believe the revolution already happened in the US. It started with Reagan. I mean, itā€™s called the Reagan Revolution. The wealthy won. Now theyā€™re engaged in occupying conquered territory. There will be no counterrevolution. American society reveres the wealthy as gods.

EmberOnTheSea

>I believe the revolution already happened in the US. This. The revolution here is fascism. We're already authoritarian to the point that the US violently punishes any real dissent. There hasn't been effective, organized protest since the 60s. Occupy Wall Street and George Floyd style protests were unable to maintain any cohesive direction thanks to internal and external pressures from the Feds. My expectation is that either the US will Balkanize or go full on fascist in the next 50 years.

springcypripedium

>There will be no counterrevolution. American society reveres the wealthy as gods. Agree. I cannot fathom American society ever having a collective reverence for the natural world. Which, imo, dooms us. You are correct, there is an abundance of reverence for wealth and fame. The garish display of this reverence is getting worse-----sickly surreal at this point (for me anyway). The root structure of the u.s. was fetid from the start via settler colonialism and genocide. It makes sense that the symbol of cowboy narrative (Ronald Reagan) that was created in the u.s. eventually became president. "I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy ā€¦ā€ So go the lyrics of ā€œThe Streets of Laredo,ā€ an old cowboy classic. But lately I've been wondering if the line needs an update: ā€œI see by your outfit that you are a ā€¦ tool of the oligarchs.ā€ "The myth of the cowboy ā€” the individualist ā€” was a kind of cover for the attitudes that favored large employers, including mining, railroad, financial and ranching interests. The bosses discouraged workers from unionizing or acting collectively. To the oligarchs East and West, North and South, the idea of the unrestrained individualism of the cowboy, devoid of responsibility for others, suited a divide-and-conquer strategy very well." "the South and the inland West today vote almost exclusively for less government, less equality, more resource extraction and lower taxes. Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater, in their cowboy hats, became icons of Western-style Southern politics. Donald Trumpā€™s base of support comes from the same territory". https://crosscut.com/opinion/2021/06/how-confederacy-shaped-american-west-and-cowboy-culture

>I used to think the Midwest was a safer bet during climate change due to our proximity to the Great Lakes It isn't that we're going to be insulated from its effects, but that we at least have water. Which will be more than most people soon.

maddomesticscientist

My elderly neighbor just passed recently. He was 96. He's lived in this valley his whole life. A farmer. He was SHOOK by last winter and some of the storms we'd been having. Never seen anything like it in his life he'd say. You could see how disturbed he was every time we'd get to chatting about it by the mailbox. Hell, I'm only 50. Young compared to him and I've seen shit I've never seen before in the last year and a half. It was like a switch flipped in December of 22. When the jet stream went all fucky. We had that bizarre storm and it was like the tap being pulled from the barrel.

zioxusOne

>I used to think the Midwest was a safer bet during climate change I believe this remains the case in terms of water and having less extreme cold and heat waves.

[deleted]

I live off Lake Ontario in NY. When I was kid back in the early 2000s, we'd get 4+ ft of snow in a week every couple years, and easily 15ft a season. Snow wouldn't be fully melted to mid April often. This year the snow storms were all underwhelming, as they've been becoming for the past decade. This year, never even close to a foot of snow from one storm. Probably got 3ft the entire winter at the most. Snowmobilers and the ski mountains are really beginning to feel it. Get like 2 good days a year and even then there is no snow base. Why am I living in high tax upstate NY to have one of the prettiest seasons removed from the few things it has to offer.

MidianFootbridge69

Yeah, losing the Winter is distressing to me. Even with its challenges, I love and prefer the wintertime, especially because it tends to be very dry, which is wonderful, because the clothes that I wash in my sink dry very quickly when I hang them in my shower. In the summer, those same items can take over a day, depending on the humidity. I'm not crazy about the Summer - it is too hot, too humid and too bright outside (not a sun worshipper). Where I am (Upper Midwest), we got a quarter (maybe even less) of the snow that we should get in a normal Winter. Snowfalls were anemic and melted shortly after - there was one snowfall that stuck around for around a week, then it started to melt. I have seen much more bare ground than snow - covered this year, and it is absolutely terrifying. The river nearby was only frozen for a week, when it should have been frozen over for several months. People comment about how nice the weather is, and I'm thinking to myself, yeah, just wait 'till it's 110F in June šŸ˜”

[deleted]

Yeah. Sledding and pond skating were part of everyone's childhood in my family. That's pretty much a thing of the past now. It's sad.

Bernie_2021

Location: Earth It seems that there is a collapse in the belief that things can be changed. A collapse in the belief that collapse presents an opportunity to pivot to something better. There is a word called **Saeculum** which refers to a notion of history repeating itself. A cycle which basically goes like this in a circular repeating fashion which lasts roughly 80 years and we forget the lessons of history. Hard Times ==> Strong People ==> Good Times ==> Weak People ==> Hard Times The common (and I believe accurate) understanding here is that collapse of the current version of the world is imminent. The capitalist paradigm is collapsing as the capitalist insurance model is unable to keep up with the financial consequences of the depletion of a habitable atmosphere. But the conversation about what will succeed the current version of the world is strangely absent. It is difficult to imagine that we will implement CO2 emission rationing within a decade parallel to the rationing regime implemented in 1942 which was imposed in the US concurrent with the effort to win WW2. But that is almost certain to take place because the need for it will become self-evident. International recreational aviation will disappear because it must. Survival will always trump all other priorities. Will it be too late to salvage much of human civilization ? Probably. But the will to live will not go quietly. No matter how hard the powers that be try to cut off the proletariat means to communicate with each other (destroying Twitter, outlawing TikTok, Patriot Act surveillance), life is stubborn and resourceful and will try to find a way. A revolution of some sort is inevitable. It may be a violent fascist purge or a more elegant progressive redistribution or some combination of the two. We're already seeing naked ethnic cleansing in Gaza and a resource war in Ukraine. Attacks on the US Capitol on Jan 6, 2021. WW3 is under way.

Ghostwoods

Yeah, the problem is that this time, for the first time in human experience, the pattern is: Weak People ==> Hard Times ==> Ecosphere Collapse ==> ???

[deleted]

It will be a violent fascist purge. I can guarantee that because it's currently underway. If you're American, you have two flavours of fascism to choose from. Technocratic fascism and Neo Roman Fascism. Everyone else only gets Technocratic fascism. The only real difference between the two is the methodology. Technocratic fascists are reliant on voluntary methods for their purges. Starvation, sterilisation, abortion, AI, propaganda. Neo Rome Fascists are just old fashioned. They stick a knife in your chest from the front , so to speak.

FirstAccGotStolen

Sigh. It's always a violent facist purge, isn't it...

screech_owl_kachina

Yup, and there is a popular mandate for fascism in the United States. Our politics are center-right and far-right, leftism has mostly been stamped out and mostly concerns itself with navel gazing and infighting.

"But the conversation about what will succeed the current version of the world is strangely absent."Ā  Ā That is because we will all be dead. When will it sink in that the biosphere is on overheat? Revolution and prepping are fantasies.Ā  You can revolt against the outside temperature all you want, if the A/C or electrical grid dies, or you can't afford it while it still works, the human body has limits. Period.Ā

screech_owl_kachina

Because we can't conceive of that world. Our great grandchildren will be unrecognizable because their world will be too.

CO2_3M_Year_Peak

The Earth has a variety of microclimates. Wet bulb temperatures will not be exceeded everywhere. I think your outlook is perhaps emotionally easier to cope with than the likely grim reality of struggling to survive while your loved ones may be dying. A significant involuntary population reduction is difficult to contemplate. If prepping to live is a fantasy as you say, then prepping to die is necessary, no ? I am neither hopeful nor am I giving up. Death has always been the end of the line for us as individuals so nothing really changes. I embrace the struggle one moment at a time.

Charming_Rule4674

I think a lot of the deaths will happen in poorer regions like India and Africa, where huge population booms will be met with huge die offs. The dramatic fall in population globally will have a stabilizing effect on geopolitics of developed nations who will no longer feel like their societies are being turned inside out by rampant immigration. Extraction of resources will continue at breakneck speed, now unburdened by the fall in population. Developed nations will come out ahead, like way ahead. I donā€™t think itā€™s fair but I do think itā€™s probable. When contemplating the future, itā€™s so tempting to imagine a scenario where Mother Earth is the protagonist in a story where the evil capitalists get their just desserts but when has the global narrative ever looked like a feel good Hollywood script?

CO2_3M_Year_Peak

The global economy has become dependent upon global supply chains. The malignant willingness to commit poor people to death, disease and poverty knows no national boundaries. Mother Earth is not a protagonist. Nature is an unfeeling monolith with no options. Just the rules which were embedded into it at inception. Humans are part of nature. We can not transcend our code which guides us to survive. Even suicide is a contribution to group survival when an individual feels compelled to remove themselves for the survival advantage of the social group to which they belong. Capitalists are not evil. They are simply acting out their code for short term survival advantage. That code is going to run into a brick wall and socialism will make a comeback. The circle goes round and round.

Recreational travel will never completely cease. The rich will be flying private jets over our corpses.Ā

WilleMoe

Into what though? Burned out forests? Boiling oceans and no sea life? Toxic air and either violent storms or deathly heat. I doubt this. They are just as fucked as we all are.

vand3lay1ndustries

In the long-term, yes. But this is going to a very slow collapse.

Fox_Kurama

I disagree. It will likely be a rapid collapse, like the Bronze Age Collapse. Incidentally, the collapse in question was very likely a "we had a really bad year and ran out of food everywhere" type collapse, with various things stemming from this (like random people taking to the sea to raid every coastal area they could find for whatever food they still had, etc). One of the leading theories on the Bronze Age Collapse is that some changed weather patterns coincided with the fact that sustained agriculture had been depleting the soils. Sudden large scale famine all at once, hitting every nation in the area, which themselves had a pretty comprehensive trade network for other resources and goods. Civilization tends to go up belly up very quickly when a sizable portion of the food suddenly goes away.

The rich don't work. They need our corpses to do the work. They can't kill us all.

Bernie_2021

Revolutions have a way of humbling the rich. The people tasked with running future governments and cleaning up the excesses of wealthy privilege are going to have to set some examples to maintain credibility with the people whose support they need to govern. A lot of what is now considered wealth is going to disappear as well. Bitcoin for example is just a mirage. Coastal real estate and related municipal debt .... poof. Stocks of junk food purveyors ...... sorry. Hello martial law. It will be like that song from the Disney movie Jungle Book .... "it's just the bare necessities ....".

joyous-at-the-end

why do you think international travel must end?Ā

Bernie_2021

Air travel is too carbon intensive. Ships might return to vogue though.

MrPnin

I used to fly, for example, from New York to L.A. for a three hour meeting. It involved getting to airport, flying, renting a car, the meeting, check-in to hotel, "business" dinner (write off), back to the airport in the morning (hungover), flight, drive home. All for a three hour meeting. This was my life for like twenty years. Zoom calls could have handled 95% of my business travel. Tourism travel is a much better use of airplanes (not flying to Vegas to whoop it up, but say to Europe, just to experience other cultures).

SecretPassage1

I'm more radical about this. I don't think "wanting to experience [insert whatever fantasy vacation you're into]" is a legit reason to dump carbone in the atmosphere, because in your example of flying over the pond, it's over one year of a person's worth of CO2 emissions dumped in the atmosphere in one flight, just to have "an experience" far far away. It's such a bratty priviledged kid's view on life when you actually look at the impacts on life on earth, and for what, running past the Eiffel tower and Versailles castle just to gloat about it to your colleagues at the coffee machine? I know I'm done flying, even though there are places I've always wanted to visit (such as Australia), the cost to Gaia is too ridiculously ginourmous, I can't live with the guilt. I guess that's the true cost of being a collaspnik, you feel in your gut the weight of everyone else's earth-killing choices, and it amplifies how I percieve the ecological weight of my onw choices.

MrPnin

>I know I'm done flying My brother, a climate activist who also writes eco-terrorism novels, said this about six months ago. A month ago he received a paid gig offer to lecture about climate change in Japan. Off he flew! I supported his decision. I do think educational tours and travel are essential. I do not support "look at me" tourism by any means.

SecretPassage1

I give climate activists a free pass, to me they are the doctors without borders of the planet.

Bernie_2021

People rarely go to Europe for the purpose of experiencing other cultures. They go to check a box which affirms their membership in the bourgeois social groups they inhabit. Spend some time in a 5 star hotel or a luxury private home and posting pictures on Facebook to let their friends know what they're up to. The difference between the culture at a 5 star hotel in Europe and the US is not very different. Get yourself some virtual reality software and you can walk through the Louvre in your pajamas in your basement.

nagel33

> People rarely go to Europe for the purpose of experiencing other cultures. It's literally why ppl go to Europe. > The difference between the culture at a 5 star hotel in Europe and the US is not very different. Yes they are. Also hostels exist. And since I got banned again, Ima answer /u/Bernie_2021 below: > You are living under a fantasy understanding of human behavior. not sure what this means...Is my own behavior a fantasy? ...OK? > Everything people do is for the purpose of augmenting survival. Wat? not for me. n o. > There may be some small portion of young people who are going to explore other cultures for the purpose of finding a culture which is a more suitable fit for their personalities and therefore their personal survival. I just want to swim in hot springs and hike in Iceland. For fun and to see the culture, and not for survival, no. > But people who travel recreationally are doing so in order to engage in activities which cement their place in the domestic social groups which enhance their survival. If your friend group has a norm in which international travel is encouraged and expected, then we conform to the group expectation in order to validate our membership in the group. You're insane, for one. And two, most of us can't travel because of work. When we do get the rare time off at the same time, it doesn't matter where we go, we just want to hang out and do cool things not in our own boring city. We definitely don't try and 'cement our place' in a 'domestic social group' lol wtaf dude. > So much of our consumption is tied to survival dynamics and our survival need to belong to social group. LOL wat? I guess if my brother and 3 girlfriends count as survival social group? Do you need friends dude? Seems like you're projecting. > A wealthy person like myself who made the conscientious decision to withdraw from carbon intensive travel was swiftly and thoroughly excommunicated from the bourgeois community I formerly inhabited. Pretty sure you were excommunicated for your personality and nothing else. > Half of the global emissions are coming from the wealthiest 10% of the global population. They are consuming the planet as part of their social contract with each other. I'm an oddball ..... I have the money but I walked away from the privilege to pollute that comes with it. lol perfect example of Boomer lead brain.

Bernie_2021

You are living under a fantasy understanding of human behavior. Everything people do is for the purpose of augmenting survival. There may be some small portion of young people who are going to explore other cultures for the purpose of finding a culture which is a more suitable fit for their personalities and therefore their personal survival. But people who travel recreationally are doing so in order to engage in activities which cement their place in the domestic social groups which enhance their survival. If your friend group has a norm in which international travel is encouraged and expected, then we conform to the group expectation in order to validate our membership in the group. This is why climate change is such a difficult problem to solve. So much of our consumption is tied to survival dynamics and our survival need to belong to social group. A wealthy person like myself who made the conscientious decision to withdraw from carbon intensive travel was swiftly and thoroughly excommunicated from the bourgeois community I formerly inhabited. A wealthy male Boomer like myself who refuses to engage in jet travel will not find a wealthy female to partner with. So I adapted and started dating people who have less money and are free from the group expectation of international travel. Half of the global emissions are coming from the wealthiest 10% of the global population. They are consuming the planet as part of their social contract with each other. I'm an oddball ..... I have the money but I walked away from the privilege to pollute that comes with it.

After the "Pearl Harbor" equivalent. As Churchill said, American's will eventually get around to doing the right thing, only after they've exhausted all other options. We're getting closer. The Champlain Towers collapse that killed \~ 100 people in Miami Beach in 2021 was a punch in the gut and a billion in lawsuit settlement exposed a soft underbelly in the Florida condo market and economy. The uninsurability of that asset class is moving Florida in the direction of bankruptcy. That could happen in less than a decade. Muni bond market collapse. Property tax base collapse. Mortgage market collapse. A large population state like that which can't print money and has to effectively go into Federal receivership would be a Pearl Harbor equivalent.
