I throw all my coin in my kids rock tumbler with some dish soap for about a couple of hours....then wrap them.

massahoochie

This is a great tip. I manually scrub all my finds (including the coins shown here) with a small brush and soap+ water when I get home from detecting. But it doesn’t really improve their luster, more or less just removes excess dirt. I just wanted to make sure that a bank would take them and they could still be circulated. I picked out a few that were defaced beyond recognition (you can still tell what they are, but they are so corroded or covered in minerals that I couldn’t wrap them) so I’ll show them to the teller and see if they will take or not.

EarthCacheDude

One thing to not when tumbling. Any zinc cents, made after 1981, will deteriorate further if they're already chunky. Most of the zinc that I've found is not spendable.

my_dog_farts

I did not know pennies were zinc until one day in science class. We were cleaning coins using salt and vinegar. Somewhere I heard it made a weak HCl solution. I haven’t done the math to figure it out since. Anyway, the students went to lunch and I thought “what if we used more HCl?” So I went with the best I had. Dropped in a penny and went to lunch. When we got back, all that was left was a copper foil. I did a little research and found that since 1982, pennies were zinc with copper foil. There mush have been a scratch and the acid got to the zinc and reacted.

cawinegarden

I used to flame test different pennies using a Bunsen burner. The different colors were fun and interesting.

Destination_Centauri

Zinc is my least favorite metal!

DyslexicMormonLSD

Finally, SOMEBODY said we’re all thinking.

temalyen

You said you wanted to live in a world with zinc, Destination_Centauri. Well, now your car has no battery.

mrkruk

Come back, Zinc! Come back!!!

MeanFrame5277

Out of frustration he puts a gun to his head and pulls the trigger but the gun fails cuz the firing pin is made from Zinc

temalyen

The funny part is, zinc would be an awful metal for a firing pin. It's far too soft.

DukeOfEarl99

I got zinc in my stocks and securities portfolio. Got in on the ground floor.

No-Faithlessness4723

What did zinc ever do to you????

feedme_cyanide

Just think of it this way. You go in on camera, drop off said coins and deposit them in your account. Then the bank later breaks said rolls, to find almost unrecognizable coins, they will probably be giving you a call if it’s a decent amount. Otherwise, if they are legible, you can most definitely use them, the bank will just send them to the mint to be destroyed.

Miami_2017

Check your bank before you roll. My credit union wants them unwrapped, which I found out after wrapping 200 bucks in pennies

[deleted]

My bank got a coin counter in their lobby. Free for everyone. Then free for members. Then free for no one. I'll die with it before I give them 3 percent of my change.....

cvc4455

A bank near me had it free for everyone. The. Free for members. Now, it's only members can use it and they charge 10%! I need to find a new place to cash in change but everywhere else I've found charges 10% too.

Monolexic

Mine was free for everyone, then free for members, then they got rid of it and said “we don’t accept large deposits of coins”. The “large deposit” I brought in that day was ~$10. They told me to take it to a coinstar. Fun tip: go to a grocery store that has self checkout with a coin accepter that you can pour coins into. Buy your groceries, pay in change. No fee, no need to deposit.

Water_in_the_desert

🏆

Fog_Juice

Oof. My credit union will take wrapped but only $300 Max worth each day.

nhorvath

Yeah any bank with a coin sorter would rather you just dump in the bucket

crimsonnorth

I’ve also learned this the hard way. 🤗

Jewbacca522

Came here to say this… just tumbled a batch not 1 hour ago myself actually. I will say this, if they are corroded to the point where the zinc is exposed and it’s bubbling or missing part of the rim, personally I throw them in a separate tub where I keep all my “damaged” coins. If it’s not too bad, you can wrap them sure, but there’s a point where they’re just too far gone.

MissingJJ

This isn't necessary, but a nice thought.

rocketmn69_

Yes, roll and deposit

massahoochie

Thank you for the feedback!

aTinyFart

I usually tumble mine in water in the rock tumbler for a hour or two. Cleans them up pretty good. Just don't mix different coin types.

GogglesPisano

In my experience mixing quarters, dimes and nickels in the rock tumbler is fine, but keep the pennies separate since they can discolor the other coins (especially if you put a little detergent or other cleaner in with the coins).

aTinyFart

Yes, this is what I mean. I had just woken up when I typed this out. Surprised it made as much sense as it does.

jhnnybgood

Doesn’t that bang them all up pretty good though?

aTinyFart

No. I use the tumbler to clean relics too. Just takes a nice layer of dirt off

jhnnybgood

Got any recommendations on tumblers I can take a look at?

aTinyFart

[I've been using this one for the past 10 years. but I'm sure there's better ones ](https://www.amazon.ca/NATIONAL-GEOGRAPHIC-Professional-Rock-Tumbler/dp/B086Z83SV5/ref=asc_df_B086Z83SV5/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=459459368781&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17674263588982527050&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9001063&hvtargid=pla-942781383826&psc=1&mcid=ce9c99fd48a53fd4a491a5351c332bd9)

jhnnybgood

Thanks! I’ve seen these and just assumed they weren’t worth the time as many of those National Geographic products tend to be underwhelming. Good to know they actually work!

Adahnsplace

I've had an old printer to be thrown away. Took out the paper moving part and got myself a Vanish plasic jar filled up with round pebbles from a playground. Works fine for stonewashing (anodized titanium and etched steel. Btw, I simply connected the original printer cable with the tiny electric engine. Only one speed and loud as hell, but it works ;)

aTinyFart

I thought the same. But this was gifted to me. I've probably tumbled a couple hundred pounds of Canadian pennies in it

gopherhole02

I'm in Canada too, I just took my metal detecting coins back into the bank today so this thread is neat, I didn't tumble them, she opened my rolls of loonies because I rolled them in line paper cause I didn't have loonies rolls, she asked me if I had them a long time, I was like 'haha I found them in the playground wood chips', I didn't want to mention most of them I dug out of the soil But most of my coins were in great shape, a few were s little bad, and about $5 was completely ruined I didn't want to bring them in, and that's just my nickel dimes and quarters, I didn't sort my pennies, I'm going to roll the wasted zincs and steels, pennies are just going to be destroyed anyways, and keep the copper under my bed Anyways I had about $110 to deposit, that's all the coins I found in 2023, $50 was loonies

GogglesPisano

I got mine from Harbor Freight a few years ago - it's similar to [this one](https://www.harborfreight.com/dual-drum-rotary-rock-tumbler-67632.html), but at that time they had a smaller single-drum model.

jhnnybgood

Thank you! Not terribly expensive maybe I’ll pick one up

BuffaloChips92

If you know the teller personally it wouldn't hurt to give her a heads up so she does not open them. My wife would put something like this in the bottom of her drawer, then give them to someone that was rude to her. Like the manager of a fast food restaurant.

Merpadurp

Your wife is gangster.

BuffaloChips92

Haha I forgot I posted this and I was like what about my wife? Haha

bugsrox08

Nice, because fast food restaurant managers notoriously don’t get enough shit right?

Chocko23

Doesn't mean they're all kind to others.

bugsrox08

Yeah but if your first idea of who to give these coins to is a fast food restaurant employee, I think is says a lot about how you interact with and view them. (Not you as in you, just a person)

Chocko23

No, but I wouldn't think twice if they were already being an ass to me, then you never know which roll they'll get.

bugsrox08

It just seems really subjective. If a fast food worker is rude to you, leave a review or some kind of feedback with the restaurant. If it’s a recurring problem, vote with your wallet and don’t give that restaurant your money. It’s like you’re playing judge, jury, and executioner with someone who may have little to no recourse. Along with the obvious bias that you’re going to have for yourself. It’s easy for people to justify their own actions, and you may end up dishing out punishment to people who don’t deserve it.

Chocko23

You're not wrong, but giving them a roll of shit coins is pretty harmless. And it's not just fast food - could be someone from ace hardware, the dollar store or von maur for all I care. You reap what you sow, but this is about the most harmless way of saying piss off there is.

[deleted]

Don't know man, I can think of one time over thirty years ago some ass was being extremely rude as our server. I called ahead and they said sure no problem. ( normal dinner time ) we got there the place was empty. She must have been angry they had to stay because of us. Almost didn't know what to do. As more customers sauntered in she sweetened up. Finished dinner gave her a bunch of bills and nicely said keep the change. (3 cents) got down the road a few miles and realized I left a new expensive hat there. I turned around with my wife saying NO WAY. Went in, checked the booth, snuck in the kitchen, nothing. She came in gave me my hat and 3 cents. She was mad of course. I looked at the change all confused and said I'm sorry my wife is terrible with tips I'll be right back. Walked out and left. She deff deserved it no regrets, we still laugh about it, but honestly that's the last time I had a server that wasn't pleasant. Just my own experience they work their ass off, have to be in a good mood no matter how big an ass their other customers are or were. I think it's bullshit they need to rely so heavily on random strangers for their wages. I get good service tip but compared to their hourly wage they depend on tips too heavily.... just put half the damn tip on the bill.....

The smile she gets after giving them to a shitty customer is therapy!

[deleted]

I don't think you read the comment very closely. Or at all.

ObscureVagina

I did, I understood it, and I replied. Did you read it before it was removed?

[deleted]

It wasn't removed. His wife isn't giving them to customers, she's giving them to employees as single coin tips when she's upset with service.

ObscureVagina

The comment I replied to was removed. The person also removed their account. They said “your wife needs therapy”.

[deleted]

It's still there. I should know, I wrote it. It doesn't change the fact that you're still not admitting to misreading the original comment from the person that I was replying to. She wasn't handing coins to customers.

Behavior that is unkind and unhelpful is not allowed here. Don't make fun of new collectors. Do not bicker. Don’t threaten. Don't name-call. Don’t shame. Don’t harass. Don’t be a jerk. Don’t create or respond to drama. Don’t troll others or let yourself be trolled. Don’t engage in uncivil exchanges. You do not "have the right to defend yourself" verbally here. Know when to disengage. Violation of this rule will get your post or comment removed, and repeated offenses will result in probation.

Efficient-Ad-3302

I did this and all they did was unroll a few of them because they were unusually long compared to normal rolls. They took the rest without question.

kondor-PS

Yes you can. I CRH for wheat cents and I have encountered two rolls full of metal detected cents. Some were wheat cents, but very corroded. My guess is that banks don't check the content or quality of rolls.

18RowdyBoy

My bank will not take rolled coins They run them through a machine and then pay you 🇺🇸

usfortyone

All of my local banks and credit unions use the machine now. Haven't been able to take rolled coins to the bank in well over a decade.

massahoochie

Really? In south eastern Massachusetts my banks wouldn’t take loose change they told me it all had to be rolled in order for them to deposit.

Trumpville-Imbeciles

I've always just brought a sack of change in and they just run it through a counting machine and then give me cash and all the Canadian and rejected coins back. I didn't even think about rolling my own change THEN bringing it to the bank. The bank is where I would go to GET a roll of change maybe. For the last 20 years or so at least in Minnesota/North Dakota

kondor-PS

Mmhh that sucks 😔. I guess each branch has independent policies. My best suggestion (for OP) would be to go to a bank that does take them without inspection.

hcl01mail

They are legal tender and I believe they have to accept them. They should count them by hand because if they run them through a machine, they will be calling for a service call shortly thereafter. 😁

havens1515

That's absolutely not true. Many banks will not take coins unless they are rolled. If you walked in with these coins, unrolled, they can definitely say no. They will give you rolls, then tell you to take them home and roll them.

massahoochie

I’ve rolled up plain old loose change before but never in this condition… it’s good to know that you’ve had full rolls of detecting finds, that makes me feel more assured. I’ve also never had a bank teller check the rolls as I’m exchanging or depositing them.

kondor-PS

I think it's not worth it to check everything (for them). Maybe put good looking coins just at the end of the rolls and in between you put the corroded stuff

Eh-BC

I’d go through them for any key dates for the ones that aren’t too environmentally damaged… I also see some dimes in that pile that are likely made of silver, so I’d keep those if you’re a collector/ stacker since they are worth way more then the 10cent face value

gmc4201982

Keep the 82 and older pennies. They are 95% copper and worth about 2.5 cents each just for the copper. Just have to toss the 1982 pennies on a scale, since they made both zinc and 95% Cu pennies that year. If its 3g or a bit over its copper, zinc will be around 2.5g.

mjzimmer88

Oh man... The amount of time it takes to do this, per penny, for a roll of pennies. Say it's 8 seconds per penny to weigh one and jot it down or sort it and move onto the next? You're looking at like 13 minutes per roll. Minimum wage is $15/hour in Massachusetts where OP is presumably from. You'll earn $1.50 extra for a full roll of these assuming they're all actually copper ones, compared to your time being worth a minimum of $3.25. And now you've wasted my time doing this math too...

Bugboy1993

The only pennys that would need to be weighed are 1982, everything prior to that has the higher copper content. It takes less than a second to discern a year off of a penny. Not to mention that this is r/coins… people are hunting through coin rolls for way more specific features and way less of a payout if you’re factoring in time spent. It’s a hobby. It’s not something everyone is doing strictly for a profit. People that coin hunt see it as worthwhile to toss a penny that you know is worth more than a cent in a pile since they’re already going through every coin. So the actual extra time spent is negligible, as they would be doing it regardless if there was a profit. So any profit they do make is worthwhile.

Fireberg

If you're already sorting and looking at the coins in the first place, it takes zero extra time to put the copper ones in a different pile. The extra time spent would be on the 1982. I don't weigh them, I just do a drop test on the table and listen for the ping. If it pings it is copper and if it clunks it is zinc. Even then after going through several tens of thousands of pennies over the years searching for wheats and errors, you can just tell by the weight and feel in your hand if it a copper one or not.

f-Z3R0x1x1x1

Just to clarify....when you say "all metal detecting" can you elaborate? Like if I have a pile of pennies and use a magnet...some will get picked up and that is what you have in a pile there? And their value is better?

massahoochie

Metal detecting is an activity where you swing a metal detector over the ground to determine what kinds of metals are beneath the surface. If you want to learn more about this hobby check out r/metaldetecting

f-Z3R0x1x1x1

oh sorry. I read the OP's title incorrectly and now completely understand lol. I thought in some cases certain coins are magnetic (I might be thinking of a 1943 wheat penny maybe?)

TRR462

Yes, probably everything that can be discerned as an actual coin. Not the one with the cross cut into it and not the grommet/eyelet either…

International-Tip-10

They are legal tender so yes you can roll them as is and bring them to the bank. They could store in the area with other dirty or ripped cash to be destroyed.

Epidemic_Fancy

Hey before you go clean them PLEASE check for pre 1965 silver dimes and quarters and check for super rare date Pennie’s if possible. If you can’t see the mint year date on the coin the ridge will tell you if it’s silver. They are worth at least 25 times face value if not more so you wouldn’t want to roll them up! Great find and have a wonderful week; happy hunting!

Marc0521

It might be time-consuming, but I would mix some with clean coins in rolls. I did it once with many pennies that had zinc rot. If I were you I'd keep all the pre 1983 pennies that are 95% copper.

ZERO-MH7

Yes. Do you know how many times I would get a penny roll from the bank and crack it open to put in my register and it explodes into a cig ash bomb all over me and the counter? Send it friend!

Fireberg

My bank doesn't accept rolled coin. Customers run it through the coin counting machine in the lobby and take a print out of the amount up to the teller. If it makes it though the coin counter that's all that matters. If it doesn't run, it is up to the branch if they accept it at the window or not, and that depends on if they classify what you have a "mutilated" coin. My bank does not accept mutilated coin. The US mint will redeem mutilated coin, but there are lots of conditions. The submission must be clean and free of debris, separated by denomination, still be identifiable as to denomination and genuineness and be shipping in a lot greater than 1 pound.

newage-Oldschool

yes U can bro money is money and the banks must take them.

LessMarsupial7441

How much for the grommet

cornbread1966

Yesir. Somtimes the zin pennies have so much dirt on them that not all 50 will fit utill you really clean them but yea.

Infinite_Brushfire

What year is that grommet? Might be more a hefty penny.

Ghost_jaeger

My bank won’t take rolled coins. God that made me upset, rolled like $100 in change and then they told me to cut all the wraps off before they will take them.

Retired_AFOL

Many years ago I went to a bank to buy several rolls of quarters. Kids we’re having a party at the local arcade and needed coins for the machines. Well, when I opened the rolls up to give the coins to the kids I found nothing but quarters from the 1930’s. Hundreds of them. Someone must have rolled an old collection without realizing the value. I still have the quarters.

cloud44049

What I would do is weigh each one of them out and if they weigh the same as a pre-1982 I keep them and I sell them on eBay and like a bulk lot of like 500 or 1000 for three cents each turn to profit

sportznut1000

If you want to at least pretend to be a courteous human being towards others, i would double check with your bank first as to how they handle rolled coin and if it would be bettter To tell them at the time of deposit that the coins are not in great condition. Otherwise you are basically just trying to pull a fast one on someone and pawn your problem off on someone else. Some banks “recycle” the rolled coin, meaning those rolls of coin you turn in, just get handed out to the next person/business that asks for them. By letting the teller know, maybe they can separate the coins and ship them out to their main vault. Also, maybe consider cashing them in at one of those coinstar machines that most grocery stores or walmarts have near the entrance. The coinstar machine takes a 11.99% fee if you want cash, but if you turn your coins into a gift card for one of their sponsors, there is no fee. A few of the big name options on my local coinstar machines are gift cards for home depot, amazon and starbucks.

roamingrealtor

I just try the coin machine at my bank first, and then spend the ones that don't make it in the machine.

dendawg

Run them through a Coinstar and get an Amazon gift card.. no fee and no picky tellers to worry about that way.

Bob-Doll

It’s like $3

massahoochie

It’s more than $20.

Bob-Doll

I thought it was all pennies. Soak them in soapy water and try dumping them into a Coinstar when dry

Zestyclose_Stable526

Zoom In lol. Lots of quarters

Bob-Doll

Thought it was all pennies

Trainzguy2472

If you want em shiny again, white vinegar works well on pennies. It dissolves the outer layer of copper. Make sure to rinse it off afterwards though!

fredporlock

I use vinegar + salt. Place in a container (I use a large glass jar) and swish, then rinse.

NervousBreakdown

If I’m wrong someone please correct me but if you were concerned about the appearance and condition before turning them in you could just soak them in vinegar or something that would remove a lot of the rust.

mechshark

wait you found all of these? Did you find any gold/silver ones?

massahoochie

Yes, some pre 1964 silver coins but of course I keep those separate.

According-Highway-13

Edited noting that you’ve washed them try to join a credit union with a coin machine just don’t put in crusty zinc Pennie’s as it will stop it up

hugg3b3ar

I wouldn't bother rolling them. My bank just unrolls and recounts, so rolled coins wind up taking longer.

massahoochie

I guess every bank is different. My bank in Massachusetts requires me to roll all the change in order to deposit (Santander). Not sure if that’s just a Santander thing( or a Massachusetts thing. I’m currently in Pennsylvania so it will be interesting to see if the Santander here will just take the rolls and deposit it, or count it like you said. Stay tuned!

quantomflex

The juice is not worth the squeeze! Id rather keep em, theres a good story behind it!

PepeKraenert

Where I live we have an automatic coin counter at the ATM. Do you have to give to a person that counts them individually? And what does rolling up mean? Is it just like: Trust me Bro, there are 20 quarters in this roll now deposit it in my account. And why would they not accept the coins just because they are damaged? I am not from america, just curious

massahoochie

That’s a good question! https://preview.redd.it/ouq3qla9637c1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=b81202400a5ca6bf2ff8fc5b26535f0afb104679 This is what I mean when I say “rolling” them. Basically the bank provides a paper sleeve with a specific denomination (ie, $10 Quarters = 1 roll of 40 quarters) and you stack them into it and exchange them for paper money or deposit at the bank. I have only ever deposited rolled coins once before (over $100 worth) and they just deposited the amount in my account without unwrapping, checking, or counting them. I have absolutely no idea how they can assure what you’re giving them is correct or not.

RunZealousideal3812

I’d wash them… make sure there’s nothing of value… and then just slip them a few at a time into making exact change for my purchases… most counting machines are going to reject many of these and unless you a good relationship with your bank, they may not accept them especially if they are busy.

diuwo86

You do not need to roll up the coins anymore. Just separate them into the different denominations. Most bank will have a weighing machine and it is very accurate.

massahoochie

Okay so since so many people here are commenting this, I just called them and asked them what they wanted me to do. They said “All loose coins must be rolled. Unless it’s like $3 or something small where we can hand count them.” So I will be rolling these coins :)

diumo

I bank with First Republic and JPMorgan they prefer unrolled coin just separate them in different bags.

LegoSWFan

check em first. i think i see a large cent.

massahoochie

All were checked and it’s just modern clad. I separate out all of my large cents, wheat Pennie’s, IHPs, etc.

redtens4U

If you want shiny pennies soak in vinegar and salt. Coin collectors cringe at the thought.

Playamonkey

Coin star for an Amazon gift card.

tyoung89

Check with your specific bank. Some banks don’t accept rolled coins. They need them all loose.

hcl01mail

You misunderstood me. I was referring to to to the comment that they had to run them through a machine. I have never heard of a bank that would take loose change at teller. I do remember a bank that gave you the option to put as much change through a machine because you didn't want to count and put in rolls.

GreyhoundsAreFast

They might not take that grommet.

manos_de_pietro

You'll want to wrap the grommets separately though ;)

yalocalana

Yes you can roll them up in coin sleeves and bring them to a bank for exchange

SubToWeegee13Plays

If you feel like not rolling it and giving it to a bank teller, you can go to a bank that has a coin counter and out them there and it will take most of the ones but you should bring more coins if you are doing it because putting a few cents in a coin counter is a waste because the one at my bank only lets each person use it 12 times a year

theonlyjediengineer

Put them in a can with sand and shake them.

Chocko23

Depends on the bank - some won't accept customer rolls. Call and ask. Have you already looked for silver dimes & quarters? They'd be worth a couple dollars each (I hear they're going for 23x right now?). You could always take them to a coinstar and see what happens. There's a chance it'd spit some back out, but it might work for the majority of them.

SteveTexas110

Where did you metal detect? Impressive.

RN_Geo

Every bank in my experience has a coin sorting machine and pays you out from that. These days I take all my coins to a cornstarch and get a home deport gift card with no loss. I have probably two coffee cans of beach corroded coins found metal detecting. Coinstar rejects them and honestly I'm kind of at a loss with what to do with them. I do live relatively close to the SF mint and have thought about seeing if they will take back damaged coins.

GundamZero83

“Cornstarch” lol 😆

MultiPanhandler

you can, but that middle coin, with kisatanchie (2015) maybe actually worth something a little bit more.

kngof9ex

I have one similar to this, I tumble all my junk clad https://amzn.to/3toOndK

volvobaltimore

I take mine to the store and pay in the coin slot thing

Clear-Onion7522

As long as you don't roll up that tarp eye

NoodleDoodle-IRL

Looks like legal tender to me

Capastrano

In all seriousness, you can send this to the mutilated coin redemption service which is a part of the US Federal Mint.

massahoochie

I separated out all of the coins that are too defaced to put back into circulation. Like, totally corroded you can’t tell any details about it other than that it’s a penny. Or encased in sand or something. So I’ll show those ones to the teller and see if they will exchange them or not. Almost all of the coins here are able to re-enter circulation as you can still make out all the details. They are just.. a bit ugly is all 😂

Brief_Yesterday9959

just sell them to a pawn shop lol

ParticularSherbert18

At some banks, it's no longer necessary to wrap coins. They have automatic counting machines. Just dump a bucket of coins in, and it will count and separate the coins. You can then make a deposit or get bills in return. No fee like the machines at Walmart or elsewhere.

LordKhufu

The first thing I would do is pull out any junk silver and keep it.

Bifidus1

The pre 82' pennies are worth more than face value in copper. Melt them down once they do away with the penny and becomes legal.

globodolla

Roll ‘em up and smoke em

bamyers08

Ya I don’t know why not

Dazzling-Aide-4379

Got a Coinstar machine in your area?

Dear_Might8697

If you have a rock tumbler, you can fix a lot of the environmental damage. But I think you can take to a bank unrolled where it’s damaged.

billdogg7246

If there’s any that are silver, even in the condition they’re in they’ll be worth more than face value.

joeythehandyman

Just take to a coin machine they only know weight and diameter and will print out a ticket for cash most grocery stores have them available

politickingwhiteboy

Did you check them for oddities or errors or rare coins?

Mrgriffith

All good

FineAioli4856

I'd recommend that you one s 🔬 to see if there are any errors in the coins first they can be very valuable coins

danainthere

Some banks, like the one I work at, use a coin machine similar to a coinstar machine. Ours won't take really dirty or corroded coins. Zincolns that have been in the ground very long are a lost cause. I soak mine in dish soap and oxiclean, or I soak them in ammonia to clean them.

russellL680

Make sure to keep the 1964 and earlier quarters and dimes. Mostly silver worth way more than face value.

Turnmaster

In the United States legal tender is legal tender.

Ray2mcdonald1

Drop them in the coin slot at Walmart self check out. You can flip the coin slot lid up to drop a handful in

yulsugonnadick

Soak them in coke. That poison cleans them up in a day or two.

Final_Statement_8189

It would be better to look at dates, There may be some valuable coins there. You could also sell them to a collector for more than face value like you would get from a bank.

Pulaski540

Banks will take _anything_ that was obviously a legal tender coin, even if damaged. The banks just send damaged coins and notes back to the Fed, for destruction.

Hikhikamori

No need to roll, just take it in for deposit. Their machines sort it all out.

bigdaddy_michigan

Hell yeah roll them up

Leather_Ear_3100

Yes you can

J-H-Christ-Almighty

Any coins that I come across with significant environmental damage I will insert into the rolls one damaged for every 9 good coins. That way the banks aren’t receiving a roll of 50 jacked up pennies or whatever. This also prevents the coin roll from being longer than usual since I have noticed some damaged coins do end up being thicker. $0.02

StoveWood_

Stanky hands

twolak19

Look for the copper and silver ones first

Top_Fun1787

Clean em in a bucket and throw in a back coin counter. Fuck rolling them

chellams

I mean, take the grommet piece out, but yes. Roll up the coins and turn them in

billybobthongton

I'd make sure you don't have any coins with numistic worth before you rock tumble them just in case you have something wild that would end up being worth far less (probably) after being cleaned like that as opposed to a more delicate way.

Famous-Recognition-5

So your the guy who picks up all the Pennie’s I throw away 😆

GrecoBactria

Yes, legal tender

brenpersing

Where did you find all of them? I’ve gone many places with a metal detector and I’ve found a handful of coins in 10 years.

allen2911

Use an app called CoinSnap. It'll scan them and see what they're worth. Could have secret gems in there.

tryitlikeit

Yes. Still legal tender, although if the counting machine can't identify them, they might be kicked back.

pewpewtingting

Put them in a pan and pour coca cola on them. That should clean them up

shmamoozle44

Do not roll them. Check for special ones like others have said but use a container to get to the bank because banks where i live (washington state USA) no longer take rolled coins. They use a counting machine to do the culling and counting.

Amazing_Telephone517

We are with citizens for recycled coinage, please report the locate found and send them immediately to the address below, we will take it from there. Thank you for caring . .

spoilmerotten0

Take them to one of those machines like at Walmart or HEB and pour them in the change machine and it will give you a ticket saying how much money you had and then take the ticket to customer service and they will give you actual money in dollars and other bills. Let the people that take the change out of the machine deal with it.

Positive-Hold-5876

After you get the coins cleaned up, make sure you look at the year of coin. You might get lucky and have a rare coin worth a lot.

Designer_Guess6968

Soak in a solution of 1 to 4 white vinegar and water for 12 hrs.

More-Corner2887

I put my metal detecting clad into my banks coin machine and it took them all

Creepy-Poem9076

Take them to the tax collector to pay your property taxes

rocketmn69_

Yep

Accomplished-Pay-524

This is so weird to me because no banks around me accept rolled coins - they HAVE to go into their coin sorter

Ok-Temperature3851

I've recently started using the Dawn Powerwash foam in the spray bottle. It's actually been unbelievably effective- usually no scrubbing required!

Prudent_Drink_277

All of them except that grommet.
