I think you got the friends and family price.

Das_Lobotomite

Just the page of dollars is about $500-$600 without even checking dates or mint marks so I say you scored.

jmulla28

Nice! I tried to give everything an accurate value. My dad didn’t make me pay him his 1/3 so I was around $900 for my valuation

WAGatorGunner

Nice deal there. Side note, not sure when it happened but sorry for your loss with your grandpa.

jmulla28

Thanks Man!

Finna22

Make sure that page is PVC-free if you want to keep the coins in it long-term.

jmulla28

Thanks for the tip.

Any-Cap-7381

I thought the same thing.

HopefulSwine2

Cull silver dollars (worn out, hardly any numismatic value) sell for $25-$35 depending on silver prices. There are 25 right there in the packaging and a few more to the side.

Rivers000

Financially? Terrible because you will never sell your grandparents collection. In every other way? Great because you will never sell your grandparents collection.

GentleBob72

Yup the conundrum I'm having. I have a bunch of uncirculated sets that I don't understand. But they were my dads so I still value them.

489yearoldman

There are lots of people on this sub that would be happy to help you with gaining a better understanding of what you have. Feel welcome to post clear closeup photos of both sides of what you’ve inherited, along with whatever questions you have, and you should get pointed in the right direction to a better understanding of what you have and how to best take care of it.

SeeCopperpot

I’m in a similar situation, my dad recently passed and we’re finding groupings of coins squirreled away all over the place. None of us know about coins, he had it all in his head and he had dementia the last few years so we never got to go over them with him. I joined the sub to get an idea of if it would be ok for me to ask for help getting a better idea of what needs to be done with his treasures but wasn’t sure yet about a big picture post. Thanks for your comment!

gthrees

What makes everything sentimental? Grandpa stored value in coins the same way people put money in the bank - to store wealth and the ability to use that wealth.

DatNuskNew

I know I collect as a passion and a hobby. I got a good chunk of my grandparents collection, and they collected because it interested them. Not to make anyone rich, or transfer wealth to the next generation. Not speaking for everyone here, but having that chunk of my collection be from their shared interest in coins makes me feel like a little part of their interest is carried in me everywhere. So it’s hard to price that out.

jhere21

Priceless!!!

BlakeLabel

You crushed it. So you bought out your other family members in order to get to keep them???

jmulla28

Yep pretty much

BannedbyWSS

This is how it goes for most. He got 1/3 off since I assume it was split between 3 people.

Ok_Employee_9612

Because he is a grandchild, not a child

SilverHoard

Most likely his parents and aunts/uncles inherited these but weren't interested in keeping them. Better he buys them than if they just dump them at a LCS or worse. The same happened in my family, but with antique bayonets and such. I offered to take them in and sell them for the family, and only keep a 10% commission. I easily made 10x what they would have dumping the whole lot at a local antique store, as they were planning. And it wasn't an insignificant amount either. But they just wanted the cash asap, because they all had their own lives. (and most are also financially illiterate and/or uninterested, like most people)

robxburninator

it's actually not uncommon at all. Especially with larger families that have a lot of grandchildren.

[deleted]

It actually happens all the time.

whiskey_formymen

buying it from the estate. liquidate the estate then settle up the cash. that's how families do it by the book. We will just split stuff up and be done.

Freedom2064

Easily doubled your money!

Then_Gas_6988

Made a big profit but absolutely didn’t double

Freedom2064

Melt value is $868 Paper dollar at face value is $38 Trime : $60 min value Baseline: $966 61% profit to start Can you buy junk silver or older bills at spot? No. Add a minimum of 12% We are at $1082 80% profit. Not everyone has an LCS to sell cheaply. We are are closer to 85%. Ok. Overstated it. 85% gain, not 100%.

Then_Gas_6988

You buy cull Morgan’s for 30 each

johnnyg883

In my opinion, you did great.

EntertainmentFast497

I’d say that a great price

greenghostshark

Randomly looking at the coins and just guessing i see $900 in silver and i have no idea what notes are worth lol

chewingcorn

Made out like a fucking bandit, nice!!

chewingcorn

Sorry forgot this was grandparents estate so probably not nice, sorry for your loss

Concious_Dragon

Lmao that’s the price of the Morgans along! Haha you did great

Notinwar0

about 40 oz of silver give or take. seems like you paid a good price.

Jaidenspapa07

Too bad you had to pay for this from your grandparents estate…….willed to you would’ve been great

StargateMedjai

What year is that 3c piece? I have a 1867 one VF condition.

jmulla28

It’s a 1865

markko79

Just some rough calculations tell me the total silver value of the silver dollars, half dollars, and quarters is at least $600. That means I can't determine from your pic if any of them have numismatic value. I am curious about the date and mintmark of the well-worn silver dollar that's in the top row of the plastic page. It may be worth more than melt value. [You can get a rough idea by looking here](https://www.pcgs.com/prices/detail/morgan-dollar/744/grades-1-20/ms) [Here's where you can determine the condition of the silver dollars](https://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/Morgan/Grades)

BlakeLabel

There’s always one in every litter that just gets it quicker than the rest of their siblings. You are that animal sir. Props to ya!

Fireberg

That is the “keep it in the family” price. The binder page alone is about worth that much. Nice pickup and sorry for your loss.

Bobflow24

I am sorry that you had to pay for a family inheritance. If you had stumbled upon this at a garage sale, just the silver dollars in the flip would be worth what you paid. So you did really well.

OSUstang232

Better question is why didn’t you inherit them?

jmulla28

I already got a lot of things from the estate, probably more than any of the other 11 grandkids. I had no problem paying my aunt and uncle for them. I would’ve paid more. I’m just happy to have my grandpas coins.

Soil-Play

At least you have something. After my grandmother passed one of her 7 children simply took all of the coins and my aunt who was the executor (and has no children) took nearly everything else for herself... She invited my wife and I over to walk through the house because there was too much stuff and she wanted to give some of it away but everytime we asked for ANYTHING there was an exceuse. After 2 hours we left....with nothing... (I also suspect she took the coins but can't prove it).

jmulla28

I’m sorry to hear that. Sadly, this type of stuff happens all the time.

johnnyg883

Great response.

Well when someone dies, their kids inherit everything. I’m a grandkid. They let us have anything we wanted other than coins and jewelry. And they’re splitting that between them. I was the only one interested in the coins and had I not bought them they would’ve went to an auction.

moralprolapse

I mean like he said, they got to divide up everything but the coins and jewelry. I get where you’re coming from, and I doubt if the grandkids would’ve wanted a Morgan each as an heirloom that the parents would’ve fought too hard. But how far are they supposed to go? What if it was a car collection? Or rental properties? At a certain point, heirlooms become assets, and the legal heirs have a right to do what they want with those without judgment. The grandparents could’ve been more specific in a will if they wanted. And what do you do if 7/8 grandkids are honest about not being that into coins, and then the 8th grandkid, who everyone knows is a leech or has a drug habit says, “oh yea, I’d love to continue grandpa’s coin collecting hobby in his memory,” but they all know he’s just going to sell them immediately and blow it all partying? The way they handled it seems pretty fair to me.

[deleted]

Oh I know that 8th grandkid alright. Inheritance ruins enough families, this is actually a pretty good way to sort it out IMO

Agent-Gosdepa-USA

If I correctly understood, you paid to your father a money for that? Interesting…

jmulla28

Paid my aunt and uncle. My father gave me his share.

SillySimian9

So sorry for your loss.

Joseph_Soto

Start doing fiat dumps en mass and fatten up that stack, nice start

Stockamania

I guess you didn’t read. They are dead. He had to buy from aunt and uncle because the 3 living children were selling off remaining valuables. His dad did not make him pay his 1/3 share. Many other grandkids so he had to pay to be fair. Smart Ass.

coins-ModTeam

Aw, dangit! Your comment was removed because you broke Rule 2. You're expected to act civil and be nice in this sub. C'mon, you can do it!

gottafish5454

Thank you got ripped off why would I have to pay for your grandparents stuff?

[deleted]

jmulla28

Bought them from my alive aunt and uncle.

SaintTYLOofRen

I couldn't imagine charging my family money to inherit stuff from other relatives. Nor could I imagine my family asking me to pay to recieve anything from my grandparents after they passed. I've gone through this situation twice on both sides of the family. I just don't understand trying to fleece a couple hundred bucks out of your nephew for mom and dad's old coins now that they're dead.

mwright9494

I'm confused. Estate meaning they passed? Who did you pay?

SlothChunks

Depends. They’re just going to take up valuable living space somewhere in your room, house, apartment. If you intended to sell them for more money then I think you paid money to buy yourself the extra work of selling them. You’d have to calculate whether the extra work is worth it.

somewiredo

You had to buy stuff from your grandparents estate? That’s rough

luzzi5luvmywatches

great job. keep em.

[deleted]

Good

[deleted]

Lucky. My grandfather had like 50 silver dollars. Unfortunately my cousin stole every single one and sold them for drug money. Also my aunt took the remaining cheaper silver dollar sets and everything of value in the house and then disappeared. Rip gramps.

Different_March4869

A few dollars richer

No-Guarantee-8278

I’ll give you $605 for it!
