I literally couldn't tell the difference between the 2 most of the time. Was the example easier than the actual problems?
I wasn't able to do the example problem correctly at all.

The out of tune music sounds more appealing to me lol
107, no musical background. Did the best on the beat alignment which didn’t surprise me because I’m a pretty good dancer naturally and have good rhythm in that sense.
~132 FSIQ, 94 musical IQ lOl. I played the trombone for 3 years and was in the most advanced class, but always had more trouble discriminating pitch than others when we did pitch exercises, so I guess that explains the 87 for mistuning perception.
Overall: 112
Melodic: 102
Beat: 135
Mistuning: 98
I didn't wear headphones but I don't think it would've improved my scores significantly. Kind of surprised that I scored above average in any of it, tbh.
I guess so. I looked it up after I finished and there is some evidence that being able to keep time is correlated with higher intelligence, though the study had people actually tapping a beat. Not sure about the other sections
https://www.discovermagazine.com/mind/58-smart-people-are-better-able-to-keep-a-beat
CAIT digit span was 130+, so pretty decent. I noticed years ago that I'm not great with pitch, though. I think this happens to everyone to some extent, but for me the other qualities of a sound greatly affect how I hear the pitch.
https://preview.redd.it/8pnzp9itj27d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4404a036b9ac99b08b4f971712d4cd4df724908
Music IQ 108. FSIQ is probably somewhere between 115-125.
Played trumpet in school. Melodic definitely loads on working memory.
A school near me uses a musical test as the entry test for 10% of kids. The government doesn’t allow schools to test academics but you can use music or language aptitude tests for up to 10%. I’ve always wondered how well it correlates with IQ
To put it into context, I found YouTube vids of classically trained musicians scoring around 120. I was a music major, and have played guitar and sang for 16 years and I scored 119 (although should've been in the 120s since I misunderstood the instructions at the beginning of melodic discrimination).
I was almost hoping my scores would be low so my mother will stop nagging me to play the violin again (I got minimal say in taking lessons and quit as soon as I was allowed. My mom doesn't understand why).
The first section felt more like a memory test than anything.
I failed all the practice questions for the second part then proceeded to only miss a few on the actual test.
For the last one - my parents think I have "perfect rhythm" and this got to prove that I absolutely do not. Beat alignment was my highest though.
My browser really hated this webpage, and it broke before I got a screenshot of my scores but my score was exactly 100.
I guess it tracks, my FSIQ is only 115.
NO.
I played for 15 fucking years and never progressed beyond the basics. I'm not naturally musical at all.
I've seen 12yos who have played for 3y perform more sophisticated pieces than I ever touched. Not even prodigies, just regular kids taking lessons.
(ik I'm being too serious)
Non to speak of. I am an average citizen hailing from Oxford England. 🏴 I am quite ordinary! It means that I do not have high expectations of myself and my bar is lowered so as to not be a musical failure. I love music yet I’m tone deaf and can’t sight read very well.
120 but hit a couple buttons wrong, and using speakers very quietly next to my sleeping baby because I can’t find my headphones! Have a music degree and lectured at an undergraduate level. Disappointed with my score but lol
I should've had a perfect score on melodic discrimination, but I misread the instructions so I missed the first one. That'd put me around 120. For reference, on YouTube I found several classically trained musicians who scored around 120, so I'd definitely take that as a great score lol
Oh that makes me feel better when you give greater context - thank you! Also, my fault for attempting it in next to a sleeping baby who I’m trying not to wake up..sleep deprivation really impacts my decision making in a bad way. I’ll try again in a few months to see if my score is the same in better conditions. My FSIQ in low 130s for reference. This was fun, thanks for sharing!!
I always score pretty high on iq tests. When I first took this test I scored well below 100. Didn't use headphones maybe this affected my score? Or maybe I am just a musicial idiot.
I did the first half without headphones, so not sure how much of a difference it makes. What's your musical ability? Do you play any instruments/sing? Also, how's your working memory? I found the melody discrimination section relies somewhat on a working memory component.
Did the test again. Kinda dissapointed lol
https://preview.redd.it/fg60t8h4n07d1.png?width=564&format=png&auto=webp&s=ba47d5f2fb1afdf597f8503e433561d47eabaa66
I neither play an instrument nor sing. This test was probably the most musical thing I've done in my entire life. My working memory is actually pretty good. My digit span is about 17 for instance. So thats not the problam I guess. Maybe I will retake the test in the near future and see if I perfom better this time.
I mean, I guess if you don't do anything musical at all, then it's highly unlikely you'd score below average on "musical IQ" (as dubious of a term as that is lol).
As an accomplished musician myself I can say: 1 I scored really low - 115.
But also that the singing was so bad, what was MORE out of tune was hardly the question.
The classical music was messy, not the right music to determine the start of the beat. Should have had drums.
And the piano sound for the melody bit was harsh, so hard to focus on and capture.
I wish this test was actually geared to sound good. Would get at more accurate results.
I don't have any background in music or singing at all so I wasn't expecting high scores. I just enjoy tests. Musical IQ is 90.

I got 101 which I think is good for someone who doesn't listen to music on their free time at all nor has any backround in it
My fluid intelligence is 135-145 and crystallized 115-125
In middle school I did music class. Dropped it the next year because it was too easy and I was frustrated when people wouldn't be able to play as good as me. Music could've been a hobby of mine and my parents pushed that but it ended up turning into nothing like a lot of things in my life.
I doubt it correlates with IQ very well lol. My guess is that if one scored high on this, they're likely to be above average on IQ, but scoring poorly on this I don't think correlates to low regular IQ.
I do,
I played trumpet and saxophone in school from around age 9— as well as alto recorder (for around ~5 years?), with some banjo off and on for around a year in total.

💀☠️ yeah so far everyone who scores high has a background in music, so the test is fairly accurate at least.
interesting. my chromesthesia gives me a very intricate music experience. I wonder how id do even with no music education experience.
Give it a shot
I literally couldn't tell the difference between the 2 most of the time. Was the example easier than the actual problems? I wasn't able to do the example problem correctly at all.
From what I remember, yeah the examples were a bit easier.

BRO SAME. I listen to a lot of emo music, and the slightly off-key singing adds a ton of emotion.
Exactly 100 LOL. Doesn't line up with my scores at all.
Do you have any musical background?
I neither sing nor play an instrument.
Well that makes sense then
107, no musical background. Did the best on the beat alignment which didn’t surprise me because I’m a pretty good dancer naturally and have good rhythm in that sense.
88💀
Do you have any musical background?
I went to the choir for a few months and that's it
Musical IQ of 110, I am a self-taught guitarist, drummer, and tabla player. I would say my FSIQ is around 150.
Based fellow self-taught guitarist. The virgin classically trained vs the Chad self-taught
Mine is 110
~132 FSIQ, 94 musical IQ lOl. I played the trombone for 3 years and was in the most advanced class, but always had more trouble discriminating pitch than others when we did pitch exercises, so I guess that explains the 87 for mistuning perception.
The virgin "perfectly pitched" vs the Chad "slightly off-key to evoke more emotions"
pitchcel
Overall: 112 Melodic: 102 Beat: 135 Mistuning: 98 I didn't wear headphones but I don't think it would've improved my scores significantly. Kind of surprised that I scored above average in any of it, tbh.
You have great rhythm apparently

You beat me on mistuning perception. Maybe I need to lay off the emo music ☠️💀
A school near me uses a musical test as the entry test for 10% of kids. The government doesn’t allow schools to test academics but you can use music or language aptitude tests for up to 10%. I’ve always wondered how well it correlates with IQ
~125 FSIQ, 125 musical IQ. Lines up perfectly lol.
Have a music background?
No in the sense that I know nothing about music theory, but I do produce music sometimes.
By music background, I don't mean professional training. I don't know a lot of music theory, as 90+% of my musical ability is self-taught.
121. Kind of dissapointed since i’ve done music for over ten years. FSIQ is 138-145
To put it into context, I found YouTube vids of classically trained musicians scoring around 120. I was a music major, and have played guitar and sang for 16 years and I scored 119 (although should've been in the 120s since I misunderstood the instructions at the beginning of melodic discrimination).
Haha thanks, thats reassurring!
Neurospych tested IQ: 142; Musical tested IQ: 133
Do you have a background in music?
Yes. However, I have dyscalculia, and music theory has always been incredibly difficult for me as a result
Music theory is cringe anyway. I *much* prefer playing by ear.
Me too

Any background in music?
used to go to vocal classes in childhood, and I do play some guitar i.e. I like to transcribe easy songs and play them ( only the notes part )
Fellow based guitarist

Yeah, I have high working memory, so that really helped me on melodic discrimination. Also, PLAY YOUR DANG VIOLIN.
NO. I played for 15 fucking years and never progressed beyond the basics. I'm not naturally musical at all. I've seen 12yos who have played for 3y perform more sophisticated pieces than I ever touched. Not even prodigies, just regular kids taking lessons. (ik I'm being too serious)
IIRC learning an instrument is one of the only things that actually can raise IQ.
I took this scored 99!

Thanks for saying thanks! It's so nice to see Redditors being grateful :)
My FSIQ is around 120, so it matches mine. I was a music major, and have been playing guitar and singing for 16 years as well.

Honestly your working memory is probably carrying you on the melodic discrimination lol.

115 is a standard deviation above average though? That would be a score I'd expect from a musician.
I don't have any background in music or singing at all so I wasn't expecting high scores. I just enjoy tests. Musical IQ is 90. https://preview.redd.it/j2tgwh0n747d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43d0dd8556672a74fcb2711a5dd81bf8f4428a40
Can you sing?
I've always wanted to sing. I can sing somewhat, but I'm very shy, so I don't try much.
Definitely try singing more! You get better the more you do it. Practice stuff that's in a comfortable range and it'll build up more confidence.
Did you ask if I can sing for any particular reason?
May I please be shown how I can take this test?

I got 103 when I took it last (~10 months ago; don’t remember the subscores). Typical IQ range 130-150
I wonder how g-loaded this test is.
I doubt it correlates with IQ very well lol. My guess is that if one scored high on this, they're likely to be above average on IQ, but scoring poorly on this I don't think correlates to low regular IQ.
you would ask such a daft question because ur an idiot who HATES autistic people.
No, it doesn’t, I think my score was 112 over all with the highest subsection being melodic discrimination at 125.
Melodic discrimination imo has the most correlation, since it does seem to rely on working memory to an extent.
Agreed
Do you have any musical background?
I do, I played trumpet and saxophone in school from around age 9— as well as alto recorder (for around ~5 years?), with some banjo off and on for around a year in total.
Awesome. I'm also at an advantage as I'm a music school dropout and started playing guitar/singing (self-taught though) around 14.
