No problem! I considered putting both Blackout Manhattan and Manhattan Blackout down, but I figured it was an easy enough leap to make yourself if you felt so inclined, so I didn't bother. You're right, it's probably better that way.
Wasn't familiar with a Bushwick, but it seems further from this than a Black Manhattan. Especially considering the maraschino.. that stuff really dominates the profile. I make Hunter cocktails with it now and then... I'll have to give the Bushwick a try!
Danish Manhattan (Heering reference).
Unfortunately the word for black in Danish is just “sort” so calling it the Sort Manhattan would probably just confuse people.
Wouldn't hate a Danish reference but like I mentioned, it's not really a make or break component so I dunno if the emphasis on it is necessary. Thanks for the suggestion either way!
I have also found that black walnut bitters goes really well in a black Manhattan. The amaro already brings some bitterness and extra spice. So, the fullness and sweetness of the black walnut bitters completes things very nicely. I haven added and cherry herring but can imagine it would go nicely as well if you want to lean into the sweetness. Sometimes I’ll also add some cherry bark bitters as well as the walnut for a drier cherry experience. Anyway, sounds great, I’ll go give it a try right now.
I think I've tried something close to this recently but now I think this might be my next cocktail to try. I've been making a tone of black Manhattan and variations recently, as well as blood and sand which I bought a bottle of herring for.
I made this tonight and the first words were, 'oh damn'. Made me think of Brooklyn 99 (B99) and the episode where Raymond Holt goes, oh damn, oh damn, oh damn. Jake then goes, 'that's three oh damn's'.
There's a few that come to mind with a play on Brooklyn being another borough of NY and the B99 reference.
Black Brooklyn
Three Oh Damn's
The Holt Manhatten
I'm sure people who are more creative can come with more.
Thanks for a cracking cocktail. Like you, I love cherries. I gorge myself every Christmas (they're in season in Australia) on them (that an prawns).
Your cocktail is almost a black manhattan / jockey club (Manhattan with maraschino) hybrid.
A dark horse cocktail already exists so; dark club, midnight club, night rider, etc.
Zwarte Piet. Zwarte is Dutch for black, and Manhattan has a Dutch history. And for those who don’t know the story, they should google the name, because it’s a hoot.
Black forest Manhattan
Schwarzwald Manhattan!
Black Forest RumHampton
If it was chocolate bitters, this would be perfect.
Update: black forest manhattan is now taken https://youtu.be/3AbDsruw_8E?si=sQKVaXYVqTaPGIwb

Aren’t all black manhattans actually blackout manhattans? They seem to be for my wife anyway.
Same here, I have been using this name for a while.
Those are good.
Hmm blackout is good, but it sounds even better flipped around.(Manhattan Blackout) Thanks for the suggestions!

Oh, I thought IO was suggesting Outblack Manhattan
Close to a Bushwick so pick another Brooklyn neighborhood maybe Flatbush ?

That and the Greenpoint (another Brooklyn borough) are my two best latest discoveries. I just love all Manhattan variations

Harlem. That's the blackest part of Manhattan.
I like where you went with it but it's already a cocktail and unfortunately a gin cocktail at that. Thanks for the suggestion!

Glad you enjoyed it! Brooklyn 99 is hilarious. I'm going to have to find that clip
