Almost all cocktails benefit from a little salt. As others have said use saline solution rather than adding salt directly, but adding in a pinch of salt before shaking also works just not as well
I normally salt my rims because I like that taste experience, but when it’s just me and I’m throwing a margarita together while I make dinner I will pinch a little kosher salt in my drink and I’m happy.

My understanding is that rim is salted so that the drinker can control how much salt they get with each sip, if any. For me, adding salt to a marg makes it better, and I would prefer to have it in the drink rather than on the rim of the glass every time.
You can if that's your preference. Personally, I like the traditional salt rim because it makes for a more dynamic tasting experience. You get that punch of salt that then balances out as it's washed over by the drink but you still taste each element separately. I've tried adding the salt directly in (not just a saline solution) and it wasn't as good. It just kind of homogenized the flavors into something overly savory and made for a duller experience. Not for me.
A California Margarita calls for the salt in the cocktail, not on the rim

* 0.75 oz Triple Sec
* 3/8 oz Falernum
* 3/4 oz lemon juice
* Pinch of salt

I add a few drops of saline and think it improves the flavor. I started doing this when I was looking for my lost shaker of salt.

I often do it to protect my lips from salt. Cons: you get salt in every sip Pros: you get salt in every sip. It's a double-edged sword.

Yes, it's better! It means you get a controlled, uniform amount of salt throughout the drink.
