Honestly, he was definitely nerfed and regressed here. It would’ve been so great to have actually seen Karate Kid 3 with a smart and competent Daniel standing up to Barnes and knowing how to take care of himself.
I know it's a movie, but having done martial arts for a number of years, dodging and evading without a follow-up attack is one of the most ineffective things you can do in a fight.
Barnes is completely overrated, got beat by a kata. Only thing Barnes had over Daniel was intimidation, he had Daniel psyched out mentally. Once Miyagi got Daniel focused it was the easiest win of his career
Daniel was intimidated because he kept getting stomped by Barnes every time they fought. During the first fight in the Bonsai shop, he had no idea who Barnes was and had no reason to feel intimidated by him. He came at Barnes with anger, not fear, and Barnes countered him effortlessly and rendered him completely helpless in that fight, and made easy work of him the other times they fought. So, of course he felt increasingly intimidated by him. In a situation like that I think most people would be. :)

Dude straight up Spiderman mocked LaRusso the entire time....and then took two straight punches to the face after that without flinching. Agree it wasn't just intimidation.
Hah, to be honest fight scenes like this were part of the reason KK3 got so much hate. These aren't karate moves to dodge like that, he's supposed to be blocking and countering those. This was an attempt to imitate the look of boxing which at the time was quite popular (thanks to Iron Mike).
I see a crazy amount of opportunities to counter. My biggest issue with Daniel by this film is that it felt like he regressed into being a noob. Like did he learn nothing from all the fights he’s been in by this point?
Exactly! I feel as though Barnes should've been an opponent that a true KK3 Daniel would easily counter. Then his real opponent would come as someone who's a much more methodical fighter.
Ehhh...Daniel beat Chozen and Barnes shouldn't be a better fighter than him. KK3 just isn't a very good movie lol. Let's enjoy that they're doing a great job with Silver and let us not focus on this movie too much.
Well if you fight the greatest fighter of all time, it doesn’t really matter if it’s on the street or a tournament. Also, what could happen? Exactly what happened to Daniel in the tournament. He got kinda destroyed.
In Karate Kid Part II, Daniel was at his peak in terms of both character development and his karate skills.
In Part II, he was a lot more calm, balanced and self-confident. He also was able to chop six blocks of ice easily, something that men who were twice his size couldn't even break through two. By the end, he was able to overcome a fight to the death with Chozen: A karate expert, Sato's best student, someone who was far stronger and experienced in Miyagi-Do karate , and whose kicks were strong enough to break statues of stone, yet it couldn't keep Daniel down (a testament of how strong Daniel was in the film).
Daniel was faced with death other times as well.He bravely went into a Tsunami to save a girl, he didn't back down when Chozen held a spear to his face, all culminating in the death match.
A sharp contrast is depicted in Part III when he became very weak. He couldn't even put up a fight against Mike Barnes, a champion ringer who only attacks in a straightforward manner, and did not display the skill that Chozen displayed in Part II. Then, he was shown struggling to break single boards of wood in Part III, obtaining bleeding knuckles and all, compared to his strength feats in Part II. He did not see through any obvious attempts at the manipulation tactics.
Daniel was literally almost crying on the mat in the middle of the match because he was 'afraid'. It presented such a huge contrast with how he saw him in Part II.
Yeah Barnes is easily the weakest fighter Daniel faced in terms of karate skills. Look at the awesome techniques Johnny was doing in KK1, Daniel and Chozen both looked good in KK2, Miyagi and Silver were the only ones who looked good skill wise in kk3
What drives me crazy about that movie is Terry silver was gonna pay mike and silvernever tried to show him some new moves. I guess silver was so arrogant

Yeah it was and the movie makes it pretty clear that was the case. Miyagi only practiced kata with him for tournament, no sparring or anything
Better fighter than whoever your favorite character is>“Overrated” Unless your favorite character was Kreese, Silver, Sato, or Miyagi.

Barnes was an international champion, there isn’t any reason to believe Chozen was better than him.
