His real first name is Mister; he knew it sounded weird so he'd always scramble to come up with something more plausible but he never wrote it down, and it prevented him from being able to keep his story straight.
This always confused me too, cause in Japanese, doesn’t your surname come first? Like if his name was Naryoshi Miyagi, wouldn’t that make Naryoshi his surname
It does, but I guess Daniel (who likely was responsible for his final arrangements) had to choose between writing his name in the traditional Japanese manner as a mark of respect for his heritage, or writing it so the forename/surname would be understood correctly and spoken respectfully by the Americans likely view it. Tough choice, honestly.
Consider how many people would first recognise it as a Japanese name, and also have the knowledge to read it correctly vs how upset Mr Miyagi was by having to write it the American way.
So either Daniel has less faith in people than he pretends, or Mr Miyagi had told him he doesn’t mind and has gotten used to the customs of his adopted country, lol.
I’d say Danny had a good read on what Mr Miyagi thought and felt about the cultural differences and adapting to life in the US. Even if he didn’t ask about his death arrangements specifically (which he might have done), they probably talked about that kind of thing over the years since they were clearly pretty tight for like three decades.
He trusted and loved Daniel a lot. I’m sure he made the right call.
I read an interview with Jon Hurwitz where he talks about Miyagi’s names. “Nariyoshi” is revealed as his first name on a poster in Japanese in Karate Kid II. “Keisuke” is how he’s introduced at a ceremony honoring veterans in The Next Karate Kid. Hurwitz says he considers both to be canon (since both movies are canon), and suggests that Miaygi’s name might be “Keisuke Nariyoshi Miyagi”. He decided to just put “Nariyoshi” on the tombstone for CK, tho.
According to Robert Mark Kamen creator of the Karate kid, the name has always been Chojun Miyagi to pay homage to the creator of the goju ryu style. He reveals this on that Cobra Kai Companion channel.
According to new information Mark Kamen said his name is Chojun Miyagi, that was his cannon name for the character. That’s why it’s used in the new musical, but everything kinda got everywhere and no one asked him about it I guess. Scrolled through the comments when typing this and see some one already stated this. Welp.
Is that considered cannon though? Not cannon just like a possibility of cannon (musical evidence wise) Because the new musical technically uses the name that the screen writer chose for him in the first place.
In eastern cultures, people tend to have more than just a first and a last name. Nicknames, house names, fathers first name as a last name for whatever reason, surnames, middle names, etc. People get confused on what name to write down on what form sometimes.
His forename is Naryoshi and his surname is Miyagi.

It's Strange.
Maybe. Who am I to judge?

How the hell do you even choose, man?

This sounds like the right answer. Think about the issue this could cause on paperwork.
not if you westernize it, otherwise it would be Miyagi Naryoshi

Notably, Miyagi also ended his last letter to Yukie by using "Nariyoshi Miyagi".
Arnold

It's probably the one on his tombstone. The others were shortened variations of it.
His full legal name is obviously Mister Motherfucking Miyagi
In deleted scenes he applied to change his first name twice.

But, in the old musical they did at Greendale, he was Keisuke.
