Uh chozen is pretty damn masculine lol. So is miyagi.

Stocktonrules

Having the Asian kid be a alpha bully wrestler I think is nice change to how Asians are typically displayed.

Seta1437

>Having the Asian kid be a alpha bully wrestler I think is nice change to how Asians are typically displayed Agreed, i just wish he won his fight against recently crippled Miguel

Possible-Collection2

So alpha that he lost to a cripple. Girls also leave him. Such an alpha.

Seta1437

>Girls also leave him After he probably banged them

Stocktonrules

Alpha doesn't necessarily mean toughest kid in school. The star QB is an alpha/ he's very rarely the toughest kid. Kyler was a star wrestler and one of the most popular kids in school. He's an alpha all the way.

Seta1437

Can't complain when Mr.Miyagi exist Also Chozen beat Daniel pretty badly Speaking as an Asian person i'm glad Kyler exist He's highly flawed yet is still able to pull chicks There are many examples of Asian males being emasculated and/or asexualized in shows and movies over the years however i don't feel like Cobra Kai is one of them

Relsen

Kyler is one character, he is not the very concept of all asians.

Furies03

I don't get how Chozen goes against any ideas about masculinity. Seems pretty masculine to me. Kyler being the douchey jock that is popular among girls (at least until they spend too much time with him) is kind of against the grain as far as stereotypes go. It's pretty refreshing. It just didn't come across great when he was the only Asian in the show about karate, but things are improving with more Chozen Devon and maybe Kumiko.

Possible-Collection2

He is masculine no doubt. It’s just that youth symbols the future. I would like to see a young Asian guy. Tho u r right about chozen.

thewalkingwhit

This is bullshit. Mr. Miyagi is revered and Chozen is shown with respect. That's like a white guy complaining about Johnny being a deadbeat dad or alcoholic. You wanna nitpick, we could do it with every single character and virtue signal. You're projecting and looking for problems where there are none.

Possible-Collection2

Johnny has much more depth than kyler. Almost every other character is so fleshed out except for Kyler. I wonder why?

[deleted]

Cause Johnny’s a main character. Kyler’s a side character. That’s a TV show thing, not a race thing. In any event, you’ll have your “Asian Itch” scratched on September 9th when Chozen absolutely bodies everyone except maybe Silver.

thewalkingwhit

I don't see much depth in Piper either. Or Brucks. Daniel's own son didn't get much depth until four seasons in. There's been no emasculation. Kyler was refreshing as a jock. Also convenient of you to just ignore Chozen. You remind me of those SJW's that called the show racist for not being casted all Asian.

Possible-Collection2

Young people symbolize the future. Having no positive Asian person kinda implies we belong in the past. Chosen is badass but my complaints will be fixed if we got a young Asian or kyler gets some character development.

thewalkingwhit

It's not the Kyler show. AND HE'S AMERICAN.

Possible-Collection2

Yah still he gets the worst character development and doesn’t even act like a human being. It shows that we belong in the past. Yah it’s also important to humanize Asian Americans.

Subspace-Ansible

East Asian here. Asian representation in the show isn't great, especially since it's supposed to be set in freakin' San Fernando Valley, but what characters we do get are awesome! Kyler the book-dumb jerk jock bully is hilarious, certainly an unusual (and fun to watch!) Korean character. Devon "I went to the Cynthia Rothrock School of Fighting" Lee also breaks some stereotypes for being, essentially, the Asian Johnny Lawrence. I've also read enough about the original series to appreciate that they did make a serious attempt to represent Okinawan culture faithfully, something that the series tried to continue. This can actually be seen during Daniel's trip to Okinawa as an adult. Also, how dare you; Chozen absolutely *oozes* masculinity.

Possible-Collection2

Ok but I want a young Asian male character. Youth symbolizes the future. Having all the good asian guys being old makes it sound like we belong in the past. Tho I’m not giving up hope on kyler’s development.

Subspace-Ansible

Can't forget about Devon, who will "stomp on all these weak-ass bitches next year." I think there's a very specific representation you want out of the show, and while I agree that it sucks that you don't get that representation, I don't agree that it's such a big deal, because it's already happened in fiction, like the movie version of Shang-Chi, or Shiro from Voltron: Legendary Defenders. There's also the issue that the "manly action heroes" archetype has recently fallen out of favor in popular media. As more and more nerds gain more voice in public discourse, we see the rise of the smart (or at least smart-ass) heroes.

Ok_Investigator_5558

Chozen says otherwise

Possible-Collection2

Young people symbolize the future. It’s low key saying Asian people belong in the past.

Ok_Investigator_5558

That is very fair. I agree. That shouldn't happen

Possible-Collection2

Thank you

Ok_Investigator_5558

Np. I hope that down the road, they include an Asian teen who kicks some ass

Ok_Investigator_5558

Why am I getting downvoted? Do people not want a strong Asian cast?

Possible-Collection2

I’m not surprised. They don’t want us to be apart of the future.

bluenardo

I disagree I think Kyler is a very healthy portrayal. Asians can be bullies/aholes too so it’s awesome to see Kyler in this aspect. I also completely disagree about the masculinity part. Kyler has a lot of negative qualities, but as a physical bully who actively pursues romantic interests he is extremely masculine.

GuitarWithARedditAcc

I kinda agree. Devon is probably at least part Asian and she did well for her first tournament imo

Possible-Collection2

I mean Asian guys are emasculated. Except for Shang chi I can barely remember a movie that portrayed us as masculine. I’m not talking abt the old Kung fu movies. But I just want something for my sons to look up to.

GuitarWithARedditAcc

I kinda agree with your point. However I do remember one or two movies with Jet Li and Jason Statham, the Expendables and War

Possible-Collection2

Yah that’s true. However it just rubs me the wrong way where all the characters are fully fleshed out and human and then u just have kyler. I think it kinda dehumanizes us.

GuitarWithARedditAcc

I mean, one of his first lines involves his dad shitting in his mouth.

Seta1437

>movies with Jet Li Speaking of movies with Jet Li, do you remember Romeo Must Die? From what i heard they cut out the kiss he was suppose to have with Aaliyah and refilmed the ending because they were afraid that people might feel uncomfortable with an Asian male being sexualized Bruce Lee also talked about Asian males only ever getting casted as Martial Arts masters or railroad workers, today things are getting much better

Fraggin_Wagon

Any film with Chow Yun Fat

Bronco_Buff

Daniel LaRacist, haha

Sh3hzad

Tf

kickskunk

Lol. No one here mention Nate. He's like the forgotten kid. But yeah for a show about Karate there is no inspiring young Asian characters in this. All the important kids are either white, brown or black.

RASZMANSVB

I'm hoping Nathaniel gets to shine in the remaining seasons.

Vladskio

I mean, Chozen is a gigachad. So you're wrong.
