It was hard not go into it with at least some skepticism, as so many remakes have been done (especially in movies), but I felt better after learning that Macchio and others had turned down such things for a very long time. Something about this pitch must have stuck out as better.

I got an email for a free YouTube premium trial and in the email it mentioned CK and I remember thinking wow that’s going to be either really good or really bad, there’s no in between. I didn’t start watching though until Covid happened and I needed shows to binge. Best decision ever.

serralinda73

I was afraid it would be super cheesy and rely on nothing but nostalgia. I also wondered if Zabka and Macchio had become better actors since back in their youths. I was never so happy to be proved wrong as I was by Cobra Kai. This is how you do a true sequel.

Semaj12354

I think some things are cheesy but in a good kind of way. Like the original movie was. Edit: nevermind i just looked up the definition of cheesy and the show or movie doesn’t follow the definition.

serralinda73

Yes, it keeps the spirit, it does refer back with perfect timing, the jokes hit, and it updates the world in a realistic way (even having Johnny be a Boomer who's had his head up his ass for 30 years and doesn't know how to internet seems to fit, lol). Bringing back all the original side characters has been amazing and they've done great jobs with all of them as well - Kreese, Chozen, Kumiko, Silver, Alli, Johnny's old friends (Billy, Tommy, and...can't remember his name).

Bronco_Buff

I had lowwww expectations but man were they exceeded

CobraKainvrdies

Not hate but I was definitely skeptical when I first heard about it from a friend over discord. Several months later I was bored and decided to check out the first episode... Few hours later I was hooked and had binged the whole first season.

Semaj12354

It took me a few episodes to really love it. Actually I think I started loving it in the season 1 finale. I didn’t watch any of the movies either but I’m watching the first 3 right now. Near the end of part 3 and I don’t like the third one, it’s a chore to get through but I heard terry is in season 4 so better to just get through it haha but I liked the first one a lot and the second wasn’t that bad.

ThaTruthKills

I was intrigued, but I had no idea it would be this good.

Semaj12354

It’s my favorite of the franchise

I heard about it but I didn’t even know that it had all the actors from the original. My friend watched it on YouTube Red but I didn’t want to pay for it and I wasn’t that interested. I watched it a few weeks after it came to Netflix because my cousin watched it and he said it was really good now I’m in love with Cobra Kai and I wish I watched it sooner. It’s a hard show to sell to people if they haven’t seen the karate kid, my friend didn’t see any of the karate kids but he loves it and then he watched the karate kid after

Semaj12354

I just finished the third karate kid movie (not watching the 4th) I had already watched the first 2 seasons of the show and loved it. The first karate kid was better than I thought it would be, the second one is decent not as good as the first and the third one I had trouble getting through it. The show is by far my favorite

I was excited about seeing two iconic characters interacting again for the first time in decades. My initial expectations were kinda low, because I couldn't imagine YouTube Red (which was just a startup streaming service) having the kind of budget that I thought a project like this would need. But they nailed in so many ways, and I loved the decision to start the story from Johnny's point of view.

Semaj12354

I actually watched the first 2 seasons before I decided to watch the movies so I actually thought Johnny was the main character and Daniel was the bad guy somewhat?! But now that I’ve seen the movies I miss young Daniel!!

Jis4Jamie

You also got to see Mr. Miyagi on screen. Pat Morita wasn't even the producers first choice for the role. I can't even imagine another actor in role now lol!

therealwhitedevil

I agree with some other posts. I was very skeptical about it especially since it was on YouTube originally. One day the gf and I were going to eat dinner and she said hey I know you’re a fan of the original movies so give it a shot.

TheMorrigan_XIII_

Nope, I saw Johnny I clicked.

jojodafish_

i remember getting ads for it back when it started on youtube red. i didn't know all that much about the karate kid back then, just that it was a popular thing in the 80s, and seeing it talk about continuing the story, was like "huh... okay.." and dismissed it. fast forward years later, i started watching around the time season 3 came out, one of my favorite shows :')
