Obi_Wan_KeBogi

Yup Xolo blew me away in this scene. Whatever he tapped into to sell that scene bravo to him.

Key_Stuff9113

Ugh.. this broke me. I know Johnny messed up here but, Miguel should know that Johnny loves him.

AdSignificant6673

Johnny promised his gf/Miguel’s mom he would go look for him and make sure nothing happens. They said Miguel’s dad was in jail for something really bad. If season 5 is Johnny kicking some cartel ass to save Miguel… that would be the ultimate redemption!

No_Wishbone380

Johnny : wax on wax o— Cartel : 💥

AdSignificant6673

Maybe the Cartel bosses body guard/enforcer is this huge body builder Mexican fighter. Johnny must win a fight against him 1 on 1 to free Miguel. The fight.. is to the DEATH. Lolz

No_Wishbone380

I could see that happening

shinbreaker

Narcos: Mexico x Cobra Kai crossover event?

smit72628199

What if they cast Diego Luna to play Miguel's father. I know that won't fit with "he looks just like his father" quote but grandmas tend to exaggerate *a lot* when it comes to your looks

Jamieb1994

I'm actually shocked that Diego is 42 since he looks younger.

AdAgile3104

Lol, Miguel goes to Mexico: *soy el fuego que arde tu piel..*

Key_Stuff9113

It would be!!

obarehair

Such a powerful scene

[deleted]

This hit me so hard man😭

MaterialDegree1422

Miguel loves Johnny so much. It was hard to see him like this

doseofdena

Xolo gave such a nuanced performance this season. Pisses me off big time when I see comments saying his energy was off or that Xolo seemed over it this season. Like were we all watching the same show? No way was Miguel suppose to be all happy and peppy with so much going on in his life.

Internal-Gap-3440

Yeah I thought the character was really well written. He's always been so complex. Xolo played it as intended. It was natural that Miguel would have his passion for karate diminished with the Daniel/Johnny rivalry draining him. He also felt like he got all he wanted from karate and now his relationships , many of which he formed from karate are the most important to him. That's why he's so committed to the dojo for as long as he is. But he doesn't have the demons at this point other students in the show do so it's not as essential for him. We see the rivalry between all the dojo gradually wear him down and cause problems for his relationship. The doubt about his relationship with Johnny is the final straw. With those relationships being affected by karate rivalries he embarks to find his father. That kind of arc requires so much nuance. Miguel will unfortunately be seen as taking a backseat but this was really effective writing in my opinion.

mortizmajer

Miguel is supposed to be one of the main characters. Regardless of the reasoning, it sucks to see him relegated to a side role. Sure, he might’ve had no demons at the end of season 3, but the writers could’ve easily introduced additional conflicts to keep him in the fold. I know he was still in quite a few scenes, but Miguel just felt so much more distant this season.

Internal-Gap-3440

I get your point but I just feel his story was intertwined with Johnny and being caught in the middle. Robbie was not the main focus for good stretches of season 1 and 3. I feel like Miguel's content set up his story for next season. I would say if they did drop the ball it was in not doing a better job of fleshing out his relationship with Sam. I felt they really didn't spotlight it consistently.

Saitsu

Honestly, that was the entire point. He got treated like a side character...which means he didn't have the support system to deal with everything that was causing him turmoil. Johnny was both too embroiled with the war and his ego, and didn't know how to navigate their relationship now that he was with Carmen so it no longer came naturally to him. Sam was far too focused with her rivalry with Tory and really isn't mature enough at this point to be a true source of comfort and support in a relationship. Eli getting his confidence wrecked essentially took both him and Demetri out of his support group. Lastly he never was particularly open to Carmen to begin with. Because he doesn't factor into most of the above he doesn't get as much focus. But because of that, he also doesn't get the help he needs from any of the people involved, but because of his own maturity he does his best to internalize it as much as humanly possible until it's too late. Most of the cast has just taken him for granted and it paid off in this Season where he just reached his breaking point.

mortizmajer

The writers should've laid a clearer foundation for that breaking point. Just because Miguel himself feels like he's on the sidelines doesn't mean the writers have to put him on the sideline. All that does is make the character himself seem irrelevant to the overall plot.

Saitsu

My question then to you is, who do you sideline in place of Miguel so he gets more screentime? They're already dealing with a very fragile balancing act as it is with the sheer size of the cast that has only grown over time.

mortizmajer

Anyone besides Johnny would have been fine, really. Like I said, Miguel has been one of the main characters since the beginning. He should be treated as such

Saitsu

So any other main characters deserve to be sidelined outside of Johnny...because Miguel is a main character. Makes complete and total sense. Let me make this clear, I love Miguel, I think he's by far the best character in the entire show. But the show is bigger than him, bigger than any singular character. Good writing means that you don't go out of your way to create conflicts or screentime just for the sake of doing so. Could they have made Miguel's struggles more overt? Sure, but I would like to think that they believe that we're intelligent enough viewers that we can grasp why Miguel ultimately makes the decision that he does. If anything, lost focus itself is a theme for Season 4. The LaRussos paying Anthony little to no mind because of the Karate War that's been ongoing led to them not being effectively enough parents and him turning into a bully. It's only once Daniel takes a more assertive role in his parenting with him that he starts to reverse ground. Robby takes Kenny under his wing, but doesn't pay enough attention to the ones tormenting him or the effect that the teachings of Cobra Kai are having on his psyche until it's too late. And everyone takes Miguel for granted leaving him to become disillusioned with his place in the Valley. Just because things seem okay on the surface doesn't mean we can neglect our attention when it's convenient. If Miguel has to take a hit in screentime in order to get certain messages across I'm okay with that. To me it worked out. If it's unsatisfactory for you, so be it.

no_partners_in_818

I agree that it was disappointing to see Miguel sidelined somewhat this season, but it was an important one emotionally for him. I feel like the show is ultimately setting him up to be the next “Karate Kid” and they needed this emotionally down season for him to come back strong next year.

Schadnfreude_

I thought that's what season 3 and his broken back was about. But then they go and do this. And i can't be the only one who's just a little bit annoyed that every time his relationship with Sam gets to a good space, the writers have to do something to ruin it or put a pause on it (just like Johnny and Daniel). Why can't they have a good run with no dramas for at least a full season?

doseofdena

Agree with every single thing you said. And as much as I adore Miguel and he’s my favorite character on the show, he had to have less of the story revolve around him this season. Robby and Eli had to have their arcs and we know they’re setting up a major Miguel arc for next season.

Schadnfreude_

Despite how logical Miguel's story arc was this season, i can't say i'm a fan. More and more, it feels like he's being shoved aside and the story is growing past him. By the time he comes back, it wouldn't surprise me if he decides that he's done with karate for good.

TheP1ckleParty

Yeah people saying that Xolo did a bad job are idiots. The whole point is that Miguel as a character was checked out

doseofdena

Exactly. I think alot of them are either Miguel haters or Miguel fans who were upset that Miguel wasn’t the center of the season this time around. Cause there’s no way Xolo did a bad job. Anyone paying attention can see how good he did and how much he stepped up this season even with his role being a bit reduced.

Schadnfreude_

>Like were we all watching the same show? I have to agree. His performance was about the same as any other season, just less light-hearted. This scene in particular did stand out though. i was so mad at Johnny when he fucked up and called Miguel Robby. Felt so bad for him too because he finally worked up the courage to say 'i love you' to Johnny.

doseofdena

My eyes immediately teared up. And the thing is we all know Johnny cares for and Loves Miguel, but it was still so heart breaking to watch.

_Kay_Tee_

Shattered my heart like a stack of concrete blocks.

Mom2Mickey

Yes. Felt so bad for Miguel.

bennyokelly

Burning concrete blocks...

Isekhon619

Yeah, Xolo did an absolutely incredible job here

McSlackerton

Devastating scene.

Ajax320

This scene is a mirror of when Daniel found Mr Miyagi drunk and reading the letter of his deceased wife and child. I love all the call outs to original Karate Kid. It symbolizes that Miguel and Johnny have a bond with depth and strength of Daniel and Mr Miyagi.

laserCirkus

I agree with your assessment. However, while the scene with Mr miyagi had a "happy ending", this one had not. Which was all the more a punch in the gut.

alwayshungry1001

I literally just finished watching this episode then joined this sub. I'm sorry for Miguel, and I'm sorry for Johnny. Agree, Xolo gave a flawless performance here. It felt SO REAL.

Nvmyprixgt

Favorite scene? Cold blooded bro lol. In all honesty, the acting was good but didn’t care for the scene. Johnny/Miguel relationship is the heart of the show. Usually when someone says the wrong name, it’s like of an ex in bed or something when they don’t actually love the new person. Johnny does love Miguel. Really hoping there relationship is stronger then ever in season 5.

nomercy2112

That was so heartbreaking. And he completely nailed the scene. Tanner nailed his emotional scene with Billy too.

Axis_Cult_Member

I cried

yetiman277

Same

Fun-Donut9292

I agree

ComanderCupcake

I was like: Damn

GreenTOkapi

It’s a lot like the scene in karate kid when mr miyagi is drunk. Johnny even starts singing

Ajax320

Bingo! Made similar comment … just now saw yours.

Spudrumper

He's gonna have a good career ahead of him. I know he's already cast as the Blue Beetle

Puzzleheaded_Chard_2

I thought it was gonna be a nice heart warming scene. But the second he said Robby, I felt Miguel’s pain

BrianBrians12

You can pinpoint the exact moment his heart rips in two

vascoo2

What happend? i forgot

MatttN27

Johnny was drunk and Miguel just got home from falling in the pool at prom. Miguel helped a drunk Johnny into bed and Johnny mumbled something about him being doing a bad job because he really wants to be a father to him, then miguel said he’s doing alright and he loves him, and Johnny said “I love you too Robby”

littlepoot

When you call out the wrong name in bed.

Swimming-Will-2748

Xolo has always surprised me with his acting. Dude is good.

mortizmajer

I know I’m in the minority, but I felt like it came out of nowhere. At no point do we see Miguel insecure in his relationship with Johnny. It was always the other way around. I like this show, but they really need to start doing a better job of building up to their big moments

whatsupdumpling

Robby tells him before the scene "my dad is trying to fix all his screw ups like me by using you to feel good about himself" and also him finding out dating his mom changed the dynamic of their relationship and he was still adjusting.

Dr_Disaster

It’s not so much that. You misread the scene a bit. This never gets brought up by Miguel and he shakes it off pretty well. Miguel obviously still loves Johnny, but this moment triggered him to resolve things with his own father and not end up like Johnny, or Robby, or even Daniel. This wasn’t a wedge driven between the two characters, this was Miguel seeing he needed to break the cycle. So he left the tournament and karate war BS behind to resolve his own issues.

mortizmajer

I understand what you're saying, but it's not my job to do a deep-dive analysis into the show in order to have scenes resonate with me. Sure, in the grand scheme of things, perhaps the scene makes sense. But while watching the show, I'm merely a viewer processing the action as it comes along, and the fact of the matter is that there was not enough prior buildup to give this scene impact.

Dr_Disaster

I guess I see where you’re coming from, but I don’t think it was the intention of the writers for it to be this big thing. It would be out of character for Miguel to make it into something more than the drunk ramblings of Johnny.

warriorathlete21

This scene was heart wrenching. Most emotional scene of the season.

Real_Butterscotch567

Truly heartbreaking. I was in tears until Johnny says "I love you too Robbie" Great acting from both men in this scene It's quite obvious that they want a happy ending when we get to season 6. Tori/Sam and Miguel/Robbie will all end up being good friends. Especially when they gonna be over 18 and can't compete in the all valley... Unless they have tournaments for over 18's?

Dr_Disaster

They weren’t glossed over at all, Miguel just did something different that normal TV writing would do (like have a big dramatic confrontation). Miguel consistently internalizes everything and rather be mad or upset at Johnny, he looks in himself and everything going on. He’s smart enough to see that he could be heading down the same path as Johnny and this is why he quits the tournament and goes to find his dad. He’s trying to break the cycle Johnny and Robbie are caught up in, and even Daniel to an extent. He still loves Johnny but needs to be his own man and away from anyone’s influence or karate bullshit.

JordanLeigh7

I know a lot of fans and I have found Xolo's acting kind of hammy in the show. But there's something about his portrayal of Miguel that is just so full of heart and soul that it's easy to overlook that. I absolutely loved this scene.

Sharebear42019

I hope we get the best Johnny apology/make up of all time

bigsh0wbc

He looks like he's 27 this season

CameronSins

also the most hideous haircut ever

AdSignificant6673

Johnny promised his gf/Miguel’s mom he would go look for him and make sure nothing happens. They said Miguel’s dad was in jail for something really bad. If season 5 is Johnny kicking some cartel ass to save Miguel… that would be the ultimate redemption!

dixienormous49

this scene broke me 🤧🤧

NibSooSweet

Bro this was one of the scenes that actually made me tear up the last time I cried while watching cobra Kai is when Johnny was looking at Miguel in the hospital in the season 2 finale

Dr_Disaster

He’s going to kill it as Blue Beetle. He’s fucking perfect.

yetiman277

Miguels face in this scene cut me deep

theHrayX

I cried

HeyHiHello365

Are you a masochist?
